The Double Lie

Rate this book
Dr. Ellie Cantwell is adrift and bitter after being fired from her job as a criminal analyst with the Vegas PD due to her refusal to sleep with a corrupt supervisor.

But things take a turn when James “Spider” Johnson, charming professional gambler and confidence man, walks into her life.

James sees a vulnerable woman with a lot of money who he can exploit .

His con : use her empathy against her by pretending to be in debt to a dangerous mobster who has kidnapped his girlfriend.

His angle : get her to loan him the money to pay off his “creditor,” then disappear with it.

He hooks her with pretend vulnerability, claiming to be suicidal and desperate —it’s not like Ellie to stand by in a situation like this, and she shocks him by offering to intervene with the mobsters instead.

What follows is a series of cons and lies that eventually lead Ellie to the painful truth.

Only it’s seductive James who gets the surprise of his life.

There’s going to be hell to pay--and James and his associates may not survive it.

A thrilling psychological thriller that you won't be able to put down!

While at first, I’m irritated at how stupid the protagonist is…. It becomes creep fun! It’s centrally about revenge with a twist! And then, more revenge with a major twist! I especially loved how it ended! I breezed through this book in an afternoon! And it was the same theme over and over again, but a different plot. That, in itself was refreshing!

Let down

I read such great reviews of this book and the "big" plot twist and I was so excited to start it. Boring. Hard to get into and I never found a huge twist. Not the worse book I've ever read but pretty close!

I loved this book - refreshingly different. I wanted to scream at Ellie, I wanted to dislike her - but in the end, I found her feisty and funny. I still liked her at the end when she..... well, you'll have to read it to see what she does...

Good Book

I’m glad I continued reading this because *spoiler* she finally came to her senses. I just couldn’t fathom how stupid she was, but based on the synopsis I was hopeful she’d see the light.
