About the author

Novels of Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun (born Knud Pedersen), include Hunger (1890) and The Growth of the Soil (1917). He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1920.

He insisted on the intricacies of the human mind as the main object of modern literature to describe the "whisper of the blood, and the pleading of the bone marrow." Hamsun pursued his literary program, debuting in 1890 with the psychological novel Hunger.

Lise yıllarımda (tam otuz yıl önceki yaz tatilimde) Hamsun'un Açlık adlı eserini okumuş ve hikayesinden çok etkilenmiştim. Rosa'da da yüksek bir beklentim vardı.

Aslında karakterlerin tasviri yine çok iyi ama hikaye bana yetmedi. Mütevazi, gururlu, becerikli bir gencin evli bir kadına olan aşkından daha hırpalayıcı bir öykü bekliyordum ama beklemediğim kadar ferah bir öykü ile karşılaştım.

Bir de benim okuduğum çeviri (dökülmekte olan bir baskısını okudum, cevirenini göremedim kitapta) tatmin etmedi beni. Anadilinde okuyabilmiş olmayı isterdim.

Roman birden bire bitti gibi geliyor insana önce (zaten kısa bir roman) ama yazar kahramanına mevzuu aşktan başkasını yazacak kıymette görmediğini ima ettiriyor zaten sonda.

Bir Knut Hamsun daha okumaya niyetliyim bu sene. Bekli Açlık'ı tekrar okurum.

Açlık kitabından sonra büyük beklenti ile elime aldığım rosa kısmen hayal kırıklığı ile bitti.Hamsun durum anlatısı yazmayı hedeflemiş ama sürekli karakterlere olaylara boğulmuş durmuş.Halbuki daha sade davranabilirmiş. Açlıktaki müthiş güçten uzak ama son kısmı itibariyle okumaya değer bir eser. Tek cümlelik bir özet: "Çetindir aşk!"

Dette er den andre boka i Benoni og Rosa duologien. Må si jeg likte denne litt mindre enn den forrige, rett og slett fordi historien ikke tok den retningen jeg hadde håpet. For det første var ikke Rosa bokens hovedperson, som man skulle trodd siden boken heter Rosa. For det andre hadde jeg håpet at vi skulle få litt mer innblikk i og utvikling av forholdet mellom Benoni og Rosa. Menmen, skrivestil og refleksjoner trekker som vanlig veldig opp.

After another reading, there's a great melancholy about "Rosa" I missed earlier for some reason. Rosa remains enigmatic to me; she's less fully drawn, I think, than Edvarda, "the Baroness." Also, it is clear now that readers should go "Pan," "Benoni," and "Rosa" in that order.

It's no use pretending Hamsun is anything other than one of the very, very best. A nonpareil novelist, if you will. The characters in "Rosa" will be familiar to those who've read "Pan" as we have Mack, the trader, and Edvarda, Glahn's love. In fact, the characters refer to Glahn and the events of "Pan," which have happened a long time ago when we return to Sirilund and "Rosa" opens. Mack comes off as more of a player - almost a lecher - this time around, whereas Edvarda, now "the Baroness," is older and while still charming not quite the Siren she used to be. There is also Benoni Hartvigsen, who can only be the "Benoni" of the same novel (which I have not read but which, deliciously, means there is more Hamsun to discover). I found most of the characters more likable than usual; there seems to be less misanthropic urges lurking under everyone here. There is a lighter touch here, more humor, than you find in most Hamsun novels. Of all the characters, I found Rosa the least interesting. It isn't clear (to me, anyway) how she is so beguiling and has all the guys in love with her, including our narrator. The young Edvarda - I could see that. There are obviously traits in Rosa, not least the fact she has her head on screwed tighter than Edvarda, that are appealing, but she doesn't seem to be one of Hamsun's great, bewitching women. All in all, Rosa is clearly not *the* Hamsun, or perhaps even the second, third or fourth book one might recommend. For Hamsun and literature lovers, however, it delivers.

Masterpiece. Be sure to read this after you read PAN. Also best to plow through HUNGER, DREAMERS and UNDER THE AUTUMN STAR before hitting ROSA, if at all possible. Simply an exquisite piece of literature.
She was no doubt used to his utter cynicism, but a shudder went through her all the same, and he saw it.
"Of course, of course!" he sneered. "You're terribly dismayed and so forth! But once I get paid I don't mean to live any longer, then I'll die again. You have only the swindlers to thank for my standing here. I warned them twice, so why couldn't they have spared you this meeting? I sent two signs of life to my mother, but the swindlers didn't kill me."
Calmer now, Rosa folded her hands and said, "Oh, how terrible it all is!"
"Yes, I'm terrible, I haven't changed. But who would have thought these gentlemen capable of this? However, don't get me wrong: I don't suspect your husband as much as his agent."
"Who is that? I don't understand—"
"It's Mack."
There was something appealing and straightforward about the man, only his brutal candor should have been in the service of a better cause.

Knut Hamsun loomingut olen alati mõnuga lugenud. Pärast "Maa õnnistuse" lugemist võrdub ta minu jaoks Norra Tammsaarega. 👉Selaaam. Anna Karenina, Gurur ve Önyargı tadında bir kitapla geldim. Bu benim 2022 yılımın ilk kitabı. Hazırsak biraz kitabın dünyasına bakalım o zaman. 🤩
👉Kitap çerez bir klasik tadı veriyor ama klasiklerin çoğuna göre oldukça kısa. Ben son sayfaları okurken nasıl biter, daha bir 500 sayfası var demiştim aslında. 😁 Son sayfadaki şu alıntı beni en çok etkileyen kısım oldu:
📍"Bu sayfalar pek çok kişiden söz ediyor, ama benim için yalnızca tek bir kişidir sözü edilen."
👉Fakir ama görgülü bir öğrenci olan Parelius'un yolunun düştüğü Siruland'da ki anılarından oluşuyor. Orada dul olarak tanıdığı Rosa'ya aşık oluyor.
👉Aşık oluyor dediysem Anna Karenina'da ki gibi tutkulu veya Gurur ve Önyargı'da ki gibi çekişmeli bir aşk düşünmeyin sakın. Oldukça sakin ve içten içe yaşanan bir aşk bu.
👉Oldukça sürükleyici ve eğlenceli bir hikaye. Ama yazarın dili çoğu okuduğum yazara göre çok daha farklı. Cümleleri diziş şekli benim en çok fark ettiğim nokta oldu. Ama bir süre sonra alışıyorsunuz. Tam alıştım derken de kitap bitiyor, o kadar kısa yani. 🥲

En helt grei fortsettelse av historien om Benoni og Rosa.

Historien likner på den i Benoni, dette er en naturlig fortsettelse. Formen er noe annerledes, siden vi denne gangen ser Sirilund gjennom øynene til jeg-personen Parelius, som attpåtil er en fremmed. Språket mangler kanskje det lyriske og vakre som de beste Hamsun-romanen har, men dialogene er gode. Spesielt det klønete blomstrende språket til oppkomlingen Benoni a.k.a. Hartvigsen a.k.a. Hartwich er fornøyelig.

Innleser er Nils Johnson. Han leser som vanlig godt, med god innlevelse og stemmebruk.

Ovo je najromantičniji roman sa kojim sam se susreo. U ovom romanu, koji je nastavak romana 'Pan' , Hamsun ponovo bajkovito opisuje sever Norveške. Imam utisak da Hamsun svoje unutrašnje borbe, požude i strasti usađuje u svakog lika i to sjajno prenosi na svoje čitaoce. U ovom romanu imamo veliki broj izuzetno živopisnih likova, ponovo sjajno opisanu atmosferu, autor ima izuzetnu sposobnost da vas uvuče u priču i zarobi među koricama. Priroda je jedan od likova - što je bio i adut u romanu prethodniku -Pan. Dela Knuta Hamsuna imaju izuzetnu sposobnost da vam pruže neverovatno čitalačko iskustvo.

I wanted to read some Norwegian fiction because I am a total geek about this trip. Rosa is a story set in the town of Sirilund. It features a cast of characters, but is told from the perspective of a student on his way to meet his friend for a long nature hike (this dude was kind of emo). He ends up staying in the town and falls in love with Rosa, the wife of his boss. This story was kind of dreary and depressing. Half the time I didn't know what was going on because of the loss in translation.

Knut Hamsun collaborated with the Nazis in WWII, but after his death new interest was found in his works.

A great deal estimable, sincere love story.

Rosa, the main female character was a little hard to see through. There was nothing much special about her, she was ordinary by nature. She was simple and that's what made her beautiful.

هامسون دوست داشت که شخصیت هاشو‌ تو کتاب های دیگه اش استفاده کنه
برای خوندن این کتاب اول باید بنونی رو خونده باشین و اگه پان رو هم خونده باشین بهتره. پان، شخصیتی ک بسیار تاثیر گذار بود و قدرتش ادمو مبهوت میکرد، تو این کتاب فقط تاثیرشو روی زنی میبینیم ک اونم مثل پان قوی بود و همین کارو خراب کرد
