[Gamgeummul-eui Hanyeoro Sal-gagi]

Rate this book

Trigger warnings: non-consensual touching, abusive father

Technically, I've only read 74 chapters, but I'd like to finish if I can find a translation.

I think this one is pretty interesting. It starts with the MC being transported into the body of a maid, Rose, mid-kiss with Prince Albert. In the original story, Rose was recruited by the emperor, Albert's father, who wished him tormented and kept prisoner in a magic tower so that he could not take over the throne. He eventually uses Rose's lust of him to gain freedom, by tricking her into giving him access to a magic wand. It was used to torture him when used by Rose, but he was able to use it to contact his allies and eventually gain freedom. He killed Rose and his father.

Wanting to escape her death flag, MC creates a contract with him swearing no non-consensual skinship and that she'll serve him faithfully until they escape the tower; then she'll take compensation (e.g. land or money) and never to be seen again. Albert doesn't trust her, obviously, so he tests her. But as Rose sticks to what she says, they slowly start a good cohabitation situation.

This understandably sounds like a questionable start to a fantasy romance; but apart from the initial story's premise, it's a sweet, funny, and sometimes sad story. Most of the chapters after the first few gave a slice-of-life feeling to them. MC cooks, gushes about delicious food, compliments Albert to stay in his good graces and reassure him she is not interested, she adopts a dragon baby, and plans for her life after they're free from the tower; Albert leveling up his magic and communicating with his allies to break the spells in the tower. It seems as normal an arrangement as they can get. Albert really appreciates this and starts to feel something more. Now Albert is the one who wants to be closer to MC.

How this part was handled was really interesting. MC simultaneously acknowledges that Albert is handsome and she likes him. Yet she keeps her walls up because she's not sure she can trust either of their feelings, especially given their living situation and because their status differences makes it incredibly difficult for them to be together.... Albert simultaneously pulls out all the stops to express his feelings and fluster her, but is also respectful of her boundaries.

The MC and Albert have open pretty communication. With their new living arrangement, they've get to know each other well. They can tell how each other is feeling and generally what they may be thinking. They each have a few secrets, but they're almost like open secrets. The other person guesses what the other is thinking about or planning because they've gotten to know each other's values.
