Is it too late for a second chance at romance with her brother’s best friend?

True crime podcaster Alexis has a stalker who has her fleeing back to her small mountain town in Northern Arizona for safety. Unfortunately, that means she has to see someone she never wanted to see again, her brother’s best friend. Chase kissed her back in high school and ran off and joined the Marines the next day. He’s now a cop, and is trying to squeeze his massive form into a sleeping position on her couch because he is refusing to leave until she’s safe.

Chase tried not to fall for the curvy and smart Alexis when he practically lived at his best friend’s house as a teen. He knew he was never good enough for her, a point his abusive parents proved when they forced him out of town after high school. Now he has a second chance to show her how much she has always meant to him, if he can catch whoever is trying to kill her first.

Will Alexis give Chase the chance to move from the couch to her bed? Or is their reunion 10 years too late?

I live in Arizona with my husband and kids, and a feisty cat. Besides writing, I enjoy cooking and hiking. And reading, of course. I have way too many books and not enough time in the day. I'm also learning to play the bass, just because I wanted to try something new.

True Crime and Second Chances...

I really liked this one. This is another one that I grabbed because I liked the cover. Some yummy lumberjack action with that beard and those tattoos. This was also a first time author for me, and she did a great job.

This story followed Alexis. When in college her roommate was kidnapped and never seen again. This lead Alexis to become a true crime podcast host because of how she was treated by the authorities and how poorly they handled her friend's case. She has an escalating stalker who she assumes is connected to one of the cases she's covered. So she decides to spend some time in her hometown with her brother, to get away and hopefully throw the stalker off her trail. But going home means she will be back around her first love and brother's best friend, Chase, who up and left her and joined the marines without any notice or explanation after their first kiss, a decade ago.

Chase is now the town's sheriff after almost a decade overseas in the marines. He's never let go of his feelings for Alexis, the one girl who's always had his heart. Chase had a terrible abusive family life he kept from Alexis growing up. He never told her how he was forced away to bootcamp by his mother to protect him from his father. When Alexis shows up out of the blue, back in town, Chase can tell something is wrong. When he finds out about the stalker there's nothing that will keep him from protecting Alexis, no matter what it takes. Including moving into her rental house and sleeping on the small cramped sofa.

Alexis was compassionate, smart and independent. Chase was a good and honorable man; sexy to boot with his beard, tatoos, and marine physique. They had crazy heat and chemistry as all their old feelings came roaring back to the surface.

I really liked this one. Both Alexis and Chase were great characters and complemented each other so well. Not to mention after years of pent up emotions things get pretty steamy. I loved the true crime thriller aspect part of the story. Even though I saw the big reveal coming, there was a small twist at the end that has me really excited for the next one. We have questions now, left unanswered until the next book. It seems likely to be Alexis's podcast partner and bestie, Nora, and one of the sheriff's deputies Daniel.

Even though this is an ARC review, I will always shoot you straight. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Refuge had such promise, but the book had too much manufactured angst. Alexis is an introvert and focuses too much on her weight. When she has a stalker, she leaves her life in California to return to her childhood home until the danger passes. Unfortunately, her teenage crush and brother's best friend is back and working as a sheriff's deputy. I liked Chase, as he was able to overcome his abusive childhood and make something of himself. He also never got over the girl he had to leave behind. Alexis was the drama queen. Throughout the book, she was hanging on to old hurts over one kiss or she was too fat and not the girl the guys went for or her relationship with Chase could only be temporary. Don't even get me started on the TSTL moment with her stalker. The story line was good, but Alexis made it only 3 stars.

Alexis became a campaigner for victim’s rights following the disappearance of her best friend in college. Now a successful true crime podcaster, she’s being stalked by someone who knows her show and where she lives. Fearing she’s in danger, she returns to her small hometown, where she reconnects with Chase, her brother’s best friend. Chase kissed her when they were teenagers before leaving the following day to join the military, and she hasn’t seen him since. When Chase realises the danger Alexis is in, he appoints himself as her protector.

I didn’t dislike this story. I found it very engaging and I wanted to know how it was all going to end right from the start. The novel opens very strong - I really liked the opening part and the explanation for how Alexis became involved in the world of true crime. The opening chapter also did a good job of setting up her relationship with Chase.

I thought both the main characters were okay; I preferred Chase, overall, as I felt his personality was more fleshed out. Alexis felt a bit more two-dimensional - we were told a lot about how weird and introverted she was but I didn’t really think that came through on the page. Their romance was quite nice, too. I think I liked the concept of it more than how it actually played out - it was a fun idea and there was a lot of potential in it, for me. The combination of the brother’s best friend and bodyguard tropes worked well for me.

They had a gentler chemistry, and I would have liked a little bit more conflict before they jumped into a relationship again. I felt like it moved a little too fast, but we did get a lot of time with them together as a couple on-page which was quite nice. The sex scenes were quite well-written.

Outside of the romance, I thought the suspense storyline started well. It had some very creepy and tense bits, and I quite liked that Chase and Alexis reacted differently to some of these events than I would have expected . However, I did think this plotline got a little weird towards the end in a way I didn’t enjoy with the It came out of nowhere for me - it definitely was a twist but not one that I thought worked very well. If it had been seeded through the rest of the novel I probably wouldn’t have minded, but it wasn’t set up very well. I also found

I found the ending a little bit protracted after the final showdown. I know it was to set up the next novel in the series, but it felt very drawn out. There were also a few parts I found very confusing that I think a good edit would have solved - I noticed a few switches between first and third person, and definitely one point where Chase’s name was used instead of Alexis’ in a scene that was from Alexis’ POV. It really threw off the scene for me and I had to reread it a couple of times.

Overall this novel showed a lot of promise, but I thought it needed some work. The author’s voice was quite nice and I was engaged enough to want to finish it, and I would still recommend it to someone if they were looking for a romantic suspense novel with the brother’s best friend, bodyguard, and second chance tropes.

4.05 star average? Are you shitting me?

Refuge is the kind of book that gives self publishing a bad name.

I'm trying to be more forgiving of poor grammar but Refuge takes the biscuit. It is unbelievable how bad it is. I don't believe anyone at all proofread it and ironically the main character has an English degree.

There is simply no excuse for publishing a work in which the author forgets whether they are narrating in the first or third person in the same sentence. "Even one of him last night, when I went out to check on the porch and she stood in the living room wrapped in a blanket."

Ditto tenses. "He slowed in his steps noting there is a bouquet of flowers on her front porch." Speaking of verbs, lighting, setting alight and alighting are not the same thing. It is unlikely that something might "(alight) every nerve ending" but it might set every nerve ending alight.

Phrasing is messy.
- "I was just letting you have my beauty rest."
- "Chase had no idea of knowing if that was the truth."
- "He lived most of his life at Alexis and Drew's house when he could."
- "Throwing on her shortest shorts and a cami, something she would never normally wear around if company was present."
- "He was ready yet for the moment to be over."
- "Did you do anything to burn any calories or something?"
- "But if you drop the gun and leave now, you may have the chance to finding another one someday."

The characters were idiotic.

The policeman:
- who has no idea how he could work out if he was his father's child. Hello? DNA? You don't necessarily need the purported parent's DNA to compare. A little genetic genealogy would do the trick.
- Also, since when is a small town police station so well staffed that they can have one of their employees out 24/7 to protect one person?
- Chapter 11: "Your cop boyfriend won’t keep you safe. Only one day here and you’re shacking up with him." Chapter 18: "maybe he doesn’t realize I’m a cop". Bro. Have you been paying attention at all?

The true crime podcaster and writer who makes the kind of idiotic choices a horror movie victim might:
- Like... yeah, going to "a cabin alone on the edge of town" seems like "a foolish plan".
- Yes, it's naive to think a stalker who managed to discover your home address wouldn't follow you. You didn't exactly take a whole lot of evasive measures.
- And then to set yourself up as bait without telling anyone? Girl. It's like you want to be murdered.
-"He added that these were the flowers that they could use at your funeral, girl."... "Alexis had yet to receive a death threat. “If he was a killer, wouldn’t he just off me in order to shut me up?” Nora screwed up her face at this. “Oh, I guess you’re right."" Fucking clueless insightful true crime podcasters, these two. Also, sending flowers to be used for your funeral counts as a death threat.

The villain: perhaps I missed something skimming but he seemed a very left field choice.

The food situation was bizarre. Who can afford to eat out for every meal? What adult can't manage to cook anything? It felt even odder juxtaposed with the heroine's weight insecurities. Dunno. Just couldn't tell what purpose this served in the story.

All told, a colossal mess with no redeeming features.

Alexis, an introverted true crime podcaster, grabs the attention of an unhappy "fan" and falls victim to hate mail and stalking. She decides to head back to the town she grew up in, hoping to lose the stalker and spend time with her brother, Drew. An old flame, Chase, also has decided to move back home after leaving the Marines. Alexis and Chase had feelings for each other as teenagers that unfortunately was lost after Chase left for the military. They rekindle their old flame while trying to solve the mystery of her stalker.
The book was well written, but a little dull for me. It truly could just be a personal preference, for I am not usually a reader of small-town romances. I felt like the story had true potential, but just didn't hit home. I was pretty bored about 20% in, only gaining interest as the true crime side of the story developed.
The relationship between Chase and Alexis felt forced, moving fast is some directions but painfully slow in others. I started skimming through their love story, which is usually my favorite part (I love romance.)
Overall, I give the book 3.5 stars. I would be willing to give the author another read.

Alexis runs a true crime podcast in order to make a difference after her best friend disappears leaving a party. Someone is stalking her due to her digging up cold cases, she goes back to Arizona to try to flee the threat. Her first love, is now a cop in her hometown, someone she wanted to avoid seeing. Is this a second chance to rekindle their spark or he just trying to keep ahead of the person trying to kill her?

This book is fast paced romantic suspense with dark undertones. Alexis and Chase have such chemistry between them which leads to some really hot scenes. The book is the first in a five part series that overall mystery throughout but each one focuses on a different couple and should be read in order.

This my first book by this author, I really enjoyed the story, it pulled me in and I cannot wait for the next book.

Protecting What's His . . .

Alexis Mason is a true crime podcaster and may have stirred up a stalker. To be safe, she is heading back home to Arizona. Unfortunately, she runs the risk of bumping into her high school love, Chase Barton, who kissed her then disappeared from her life the next day. She still didn’t know why he enlisted in the Marines and left her.

But as soon as Chase sees that she is back, he knows something is wrong. Alexis is getting death threats from her stalker, and he moves in with her to keep her safe. Is this a second chance to rediscover their love? Or is he simply doing his job in protecting her from whoever is trying to kill her? Can she finally prove to him that he is indeed worthy of her love?

This book had a bit of everything in it and I loved it! Alexis and Chase are the sweetest couple that you can’t help but love. They have been through so much and neither thinks they deserve to be happy and together. Chase doesn’t want Alexis to leave but he so doesn’t think he will ever be good enough for her after everything that he has been through. Alexis doesn’t feel like she deserves to find her happily ever after when she failed her friend all those years ago.

“I know, but it was still careless. I never walk anywhere at night. I made that promise to myself.”

Doing true crime podcasts helped her feel like she was truly making a difference and helping families even if it wasn’t helping Hannah.

Loved this book and cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Because that is what I expected from this book, but what I got was so much more! The threat to Alexis life is more than just a superficial excuse to get her and Chase back together, it is the hook of a plot that will continue to engage us in the next book if not books if my hunch is correct. Amazing characters, interesting storyline and insecurities on all sides, which makes for a very realistic and engaging read. Absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for Daniel's and hopefully then Drew's story, too! 10 outta 10!

Great start of this series, with plenty of mystery to keep you glued to the pages. Alexis and Chase are great enemies to lovers as they get reacquainted after being apart for 10 years, throw in the great side-characters who are getting their own story in later books and I was sucked into the book world of Pinegrove Mountain within the 1st chapter and have since binged on the available books in this series.

⭐3.75 🌶️2/5

This book has surprised me in a good way! I thought it was going to be a normal romance book, I knew from the synopsis that there was some action but I didn't expect such a deep suspense plot with several branches that lead to something bigger. Alexis and Chase's romance story ends in this book but the BIG plot is not finished and continues in the following books, so there's a cliffhanger, which I love and I plan to read all the other books in this series🤭

Alexis and Chase had a lot of things from their pasts that kept them from moving forward and this causes a lot of angst in the development of their relationship and I've been in pain throughout the book but they were meant to be together since they were teenagers and they had me screaming with all the tension.

This was a great book, very emotional read. Lex and Chase have known each other since elementary school. They both hid their feelings for each other. One kiss that neither one forgot, ten years later can they overcome the past.

Be prepared to plow through this shockingly unbelievable book!

As the kickstarter book to the Pinegrove Mountain series, Julianna Foxe set the stage right. Alexis, Chase, and all characters played their parts to ensure you have an insane read that leaves you wanting Pinegrove Mountain #2 to be released yesterday. If you love a good storyline and thriller action with a bit of steam, this is your book!

Thank you Julianna Foxe for sharing this with the world!

Refuge is the first book in the Pinegrove Mountain series, this was a new author for me. When Alexis returns home to get away from a stalker, she ends up in the arms of her first love. What follows is a bumpy road, working out the hurt from the past and striving to have a future to look forward too.

Pinegrove Mountain

This is a new author for me so wasn’t sure what to expect going in.

The plot kept me interested all the way through. The relationship and interactions between Alexia and Chase were off the charts.

Already wishing for books for minor characters Daniel, Nora and Drew.

Off to purchase book 2 now.

The story was entertaining and kept me in suspense. I did enjoy it, however there were some grammatical errors, as well as a few inconsistencies. Somehow Chase’s last name changes from Barton to Moore and then back to Barton.
