They say bad luck comes in threes.
For Lyewax Vix, that involved two apocalypses and a time travelling psychopath with an unhealthy obsession. Unhealthy for Lyewax, at least.

It’s not every day that violent earthquakes cause a rare and potent energy to leak from the planet's core. One that immediately kills over half the world's population while gifting the survivors with incredible powers.

That energy is Cesmial. One of the most highly sought-after resources in the universe. Its sudden appearance has attracted attention.
Enter the monsters. Huge, fearsome creatures with one purpose. Remove the Earth’s current occupants, so the Cesmial can be harvested.

Humanity is on the back foot. They need heroes. They need leaders. They need Lyewax Vix. But he has more problems than you can poke a stick at. Embroiled in a game of cat and mouse with an unknowable enemy. Trapped in a loop of someone else’s making. If he can survive, then perhaps humanity has a chance too.

This one was weird. It was like two different stories put together. The first part is sort of like groundhog day except the MC is the one that doesn't know that he is reliving a period of his life. The bad guy is the one is doing this. The bad guy hates him so much. He kills him the first time, then he kills someone else that he cares about in another version. Then the world ends sort of like system apocalypse and each person that survives ends up with a power. The next version the bad guy weasels his way onto the MCs team, undermines him and pretty much takes it over, including trying to steal his GF. At this point we still don't know what is going on with time and the new world system has just started. Overall I liked the first half of the book more than the second half. Together this book was just okay.

This book slipped through the cracks for me, when it first came out.

I literally had it, but distractions came up and I ended up not reading it. This was a blessing in disguise.

If I had read it before, I would've had to wait 12 months to read the second installment. I won't have to, it's releasing in the middle of next month.

The story takes a little bit to get into, just because of the initial mechanics that are available to one particular character, the nemesis to the main character's hero. Nonetheless, once the situation is unveiled for the reader, it's an awesome post-post-apocalyptic story with everything that is awesome about this subgenre of the Gamelit world.

Who doesn't like a post-apocalyptic LitRPG novel?

Not me.

So I picked this one up, the first book I've read from this author. I prefer to start with what's good about the book, but this time I'm going to do it a bit differently.

The book kicks off with Lyewax Vix (what parent would do that to their child?) pulling together his security team before heading off to a remote compound his father built to get to know each other and practice strategy and tactics.

It goes well until one of his guys (Dinnenan) starts twisting his words around, then pulls apart the team's coherency.

Vix dies. Then he dies again. Each time getting reset without remembering anything. So we have the first 20% of the book with the group of them talking, shouting, huffing off in anger, and everything in between. Each time of course Dinnenan is the antagonist.

During this time Vix is portrayed as a drunken, entitled rich kid who might have some skills but doesn't know how to best use them. He's also very selfish, getting drunk before a big event and the like.

That's the first 20%, and I freely admit skipping through a lot of it. It felt to me like this was written earlier, maybe part of the first or second draft, because things turn around immediately after that. It also comes across as a sort of Agatha Christie whodunit, which was kind of weird.

Vix heads out of the compound (against Dinnenan's wishes) and helps people survive the apocalypse. Which I'm not going to explain because it's overly complicated, but basically it boils down to the aliens want something I'm going to equate with mana, and they're giving Earth a fighting chance by sending seven waves of challenges against them. If they survive, Earth stays put.

If they don't, the aliens get Earth. Pretty straightforward.

From there we learn that Dinnenan has time travel abilities, which wasn't hard to figure out after the first few pages, so I don't think I'm spoiling anything here.

The rest of the book is good if not great. The battles are fun, and Vix's team now respects him, which is different than the earlier timeline.

Except it's not. When Vix went out to help people, he gathered a number of them around them, and they killed some of the beasts (which seemed unkillable before).

I came close to giving this three stars. The first 20% is a mess, and could easily have been deleted, which might have preserved Dinnanan's secret ability. And I have to say, Dinnenan is pretty wasteful with what turns out to be a limited resource.

On top of that, we have two different Vix's in the book, the first in the opening 20%, and then a different and much better Vix after that.

The notifications here are fine, but at the end they for some reason are highlighted in yellow. Not sure why that happened.

Having said all that, I did enjoy the last 80% as they tackle the challenges that foiled them the first time around. A bit of tidying up and consistency will help book 2 immensely.

4/5*

A gem

A fantastic opening for a great new series.
I liked many things about this book but the thing that stood out most to me was the plot, a little crazy in the best way possible bug it has the potential to go far, it was fresh, unique and unpredictable.

So all in all when you pair that with great character development, suspenseful action, incredibly well thought out abilities, a dash of drama and a little romance, you have disperse.

Don’t miss it!

Great read. Action packed with great character development and story building. Cool abilities, but eager to see new types of opponents.

Absolutely great

Warning spoilers
I don't want to do a long review, so I'll only mention my favorite part of the book. Dillenan. The idea of someone who hates you and can travel back in time so that they do everything perfectly to make your life worse was an absolutely genius idea. I'd also like to mention that the characters were really well written.

So it starts as a cross between a twisted Groundhog Day and a System Apocalypse. Which is a bit confusing to read, but it ends up making sense. The power/class types are interesting.

Then the Groundhog Day stuff ends and things start to…devolve. The writing gets weaker, with a lot of declarative sentences and poorly conceived humor. The prose also becomes dirtier, with proofing errors.

There was also the issue with the MC being OP: rich boy, heavily trained in security, ‘owns’ a security company, that has a lodge in a nearby forest, that is pretty much set up for the apocalypse. Now, all of this could have been explained as his father somehow knowing about the apocalypse before it happened. But that explanation never took place. Which brings up the next issue.

It’s not real clear where this is happening. A war is mentioned, and something about a single supercontinent, but there wasn’t really a moment to say ‘MC is here’. Or otherwise build out the world. Meanwhile, other reference keep popping up, such as somehow a Japanese sword set, because…it’s cool?

There’s some good writing here, but there’s also some bad.

Book one

Mistakes: While I didn't find very many mistakes, I felt that there were plenty of places that could have been written differently to improve the flow.

Plot: With different timelines taking up most of the book it was harder for me to get invested in the story.
Parts felt rushed when it comes to clearing the town. Also I feel like there should be little pockets of survivors instead of just the three buildings. It's a big city after all.

Characters: The MC is an alcoholic. He is hard to like. The female lead wasn't as interesting as she could have been since she seemed to call for the MC way to fast and without any real reason. The main bad guy, we have no reason for why he acted the way he did. So the bad guy comes off as a nut with no reason to even be in the story.

Nothing here to enjoy.

None of the characters are enjoyable. It is not that you do not like them, although they are all either boring or bad, but that there is nothing about any of them that is interesting. Nothing catches you in this book. The time skips are jarring, the story is boring, the characters are bland. You just force yourself to read page after page hoping for something to stand out. Nothing does. This is a story about a bunch of a-holes tied together with a cheap gimmick told poorly.

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

4.15 stars. I really enjoyed the first half of this book. The time loop premise, especially the fact that the MC is initially unaware of it, felt genuinely unique. It created a lot of quiet tension and intrigue. That opening section was thoughtful, engaging, and far more layered than I expected.

Around the midpoint, the story shifts direction. While the second half is still fine, it loses much of the complexity and charm that made the beginning stand out. The focus broadens, the cast expands, and the pacing speeds up. This makes the story feel more average by comparison and ultimately left me without a strong desire to continue the series.

Meh

I would give the 1st half of the book 3 stars and the last half 4 stars.

I was expecting a time loop story and all of the cool skill building and progression that usually comes with that. Not that the person looping would be the villain. Still not sure how I feel about that, but I definitely didn’t love that aspect.

Also the GameLit aspect of the story didn’t start until just after the halfway mark. I really had to force myself to keep going.

Overall the book was ok. I won’t read book 2 days unless I am really bored and no other options, which never happens lol.

Mmmmm pancakes.

This was a great start to a new series. Who needs a double rainbow when you can have a double apocalypse! Nothing says congrats on recovering from a planet alerting cataclysim like a sercond planet altering cataclysim, this time with alien sprinkles.

And remember. Sprinkles are for winners. Like this book.

Ended on a whimper

The initial time loop section was interesting trying to figure out the world and why it was happening. But after that it was very boring. All the characters then loved and trusted the MC for no reason and were willing to commit murder for him. I skimmed the last 20% because there were no real surprises. The worst part is that all the characters sound the same

Could not finish. 20% into book and found the characters unrelatable and generally unlikable. Also, no real plot had developed yet to hook me. Maybe I did not give it a fair shake, but by 20% deep I expect more than what was written. Cool cover though and nothing wrong with the writing from a technical level. 👌

Excellent new Series

A very enjoyable start to this new series by Sinclair, as a fan of the Post-Apocalypetic genre adding in the LitRPG works very well mostly I think due to the realistic potrayal of the world. A fan of his work already I think this is actually better and hopefully this just continues to get better and better as much as I think this will.

Great beginning to a new series

I am really enjoying what the author is creating here. The world building and character building have been great. There is also a bit of mystery that still has to be uncovered for the MC. I am looking forward to the next one

Is this my favorite new series?
The book has a great mix of action packed scenes and breathers. It's pretty creamy on the stats but it doesn't take away from the experience at all.
I enjoyed it enormously and want to have book 2 like, right now please!

Just finished this and devoured it in one sitting. Time travel storylines can be hard to pull off but Kevin Sinclair did it. I found the time travel angle refreshing and a new twist on post-apocalyptic LitRPG. 5/5 stars

Amazing read

Not really big on the rpg part, but just enough to be satisfying nonetheless.

The first third of the book was brilliant and really gripping. The last third lagged a bit, but still an entertaining read that I'll look forward to a sequel of!

I liked this one. Fairly well done. There wasn't as much time looping as I'd expected, but what there was worked relatively well. It was also a good setup to the next book in the series, so good for that, I'd like reading more in this series.

Did not like this book.

The weird way this book throws out hints from characters that are from the future or have future knowledge literally kills the book to me. Hard pass on reading anything else in this series.

Okay story, poor litrpg system, but not terrible. Characters and world are a little flat, but the read is at least not skim-worthy. If food, it’d be fast food.
