"Here's the quick takeaway—read it!"—Herb Scribner, Deseret News

"Themes of forgiveness, faith, and grace make Even the Dog Knows a good addition to a robust inspiration-fiction collection."—Booklist

A family’s old, beloved dog takes a final road trip to help his humans find forgiveness and healing.

Meg Gorton finds herself alone and lonely in Florida. Three years earlier, she had packed what she could fit into her sister’s car and asked her estranged husband, Gary, to take care of Moses, their beloved black Labrador. Things between Meg and Gary hadn't been the same after the loss of their only daughter many years ago. Even after raising their grandson, Troy, it was clear that if Meg wanted a new beginning, she would have to do it alone.

Haunted by the tragedy of his daughter’s death, Gary is stuck in his life in Woodstock, Virginia. He still owns and drives the bus for their hometown minor league baseball team, and he still thinks about the day his wife drove away.

Everything changes when Meg contacts Gary with a request to bring Moses to visit her one last time before the old dog passes on. Gary is reluctant, but Troy thinks it’s an excellent idea. They could even travel together in Gary’s bus. Along the way, Gary takes a detour to visit Troy’s ex-girlfriend, Grace. Gary might not know how to fix things with his wife, but he knows he doesn’t want Troy to make the same mistakes he did.

Although Moses is just a dog, he’s very observant. It doesn’t take long for him to figure out they are going on to see Meg. He knows he’s an old dog and that his time is near, but he also knows his family needs his help.

Even the Dog Knows is a novel that will take readers on a thousand-mile journey to find forgiveness, understanding, healing, and the meaning of true and lasting love.

Even The Dog Knows is a novel by best-selling American author, Jason F. Wright. Three years after she left him to live with her twin sister in Gulf Breeze, Florida, Meg Gorton sends her husband Gary a sincere plea: bring their ageing Labrador, Moses to visit so she can see him one last time before he dies.

While Gary is still thinking about it, the grandson he brought up as a son, Troy forces the issue. Troy Gorton’s minor league baseball career is on hold while he rehabs a shoulder injury, and if Gary won’t act, Troy will. Which is how the trio end up on Gary’s team baseball bus (the Shenandoah Senators are out of the current play-offs anyway) driving from Woodstock, Vermont to Gulf Breeze, Florida.

If Gary isn’t too sure about what his reception from Meg will be, Moses is deliriously happy at the prospect of seeing her again: he never did understand why she left. Nor did Gary, apparently, or maybe he just didn’t want to think too hard about it. As they travel and sometimes reminisce, hints of the tragedy that hung over their marriage slowly emerge.

When casual discussion of Troy’s baseball career segues into the break-up with his high-school sweetheart, Grace Dellinger, Gary decides on a slight detour in their route, and a throw-away remark, at first rejected, eventually sees their party increase in number.

Their trip is not without excitement: a potentially fatal car crash sees Moses labelled as a hero dog; detention by the South Carolina State Police causes concern; a hitchhiker and his dog bring emotion and drama to the mix; and a vulture causes several days’ delay in their arrival.

Meanwhile, Meg and her home health aide, Macy await the arrival of the bus and its passengers, and Meg shares important parts of the family’s history with the young woman who is really much more a friend than a paid assistant. Macy knows that Meg is anxious about the visit, and how things will work out, but even she is shocked at the medical emergency that results. Luckily, friends and neighbours surprise Meg with their support.

Wright populates his tale with characters who are endearing for all their very human flaws and frailties, and including the dog’s perspective in the narrative mix adds a sweet touch. Part of the story are a missing father, someone plagued by survivor guilt, someone living another’s dream, and some who haven’t shared their deeply felt grief. Difficult truths are finally told, revelations are made.

While astute readers will see most of the surprises coming a mile off, this doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of watching them happen. Date and age anomalies may indicate either the author’s poor arithmetic or slapdash editing, but these can be forgiven in this funny, moving and uplifting read.

This is such a touching story that encompasses multiple family members and the issues that they are dealing with, and even Moses the dog has some thoughts about everything that is going on with his family.

A tragedy happened 20 years ago which caused Gary and Meg to raise their grandson, Troy. Gary is obsessed with baseball and when Troy shows promise, he thinks that Troy will be the one that makes it in the world of baseball. That is a lot of pressure to put on someone, but Gary didn't do it intentionally or knowingly. But in the midst of his obsession, he manages to shut out Meg. Everyone grieves differently, and sometimes it is the awareness to realize that losing the love of your life may not be the best way to deal with tragedy.

The journey that Gary, Meg, and Troy are on in this story brings in others that have their own intertwining story. Grace is Troy's high school sweetheart and they seem to have lost their path with each other but that doesn't mean it isn't still there. There are just some discussions they need to have to find out if they can recover what was lost. Macy is Meg's home health aide, but there is so much more to her story that we discover at the end. You may be able to figure it out, but maybe not. Then there is Mark and Beverage, a hitchhiker and his dog that Gary and Troy pick up. Mark is no ordinary hitchhiker and he definitely isn't homeless, but his story is touching just the same and it gives Gary and Troy something to think about when it comes to relationships in their own lives.

This journey is about self-discovery, finding love again, and realizing that what was lost can be found. There are so many touching and moving parts to this story and it is just a feel-good story that all can enjoy. I think they should have included a picture of the bus that is a story of its own.

We give this book 5 paws up.

I'm dithering between 1 and 2 stars. I generally save 1 star for books I dislike, but I just didn't like this one. It was dull. It was melodramatic. The mysteries weren't mysterious and the drama felt manufactured. It tried to make me feel stuff, but failed completely. It had too much emphasis on baseball - I wanted to divorce the main character myself. I read most of it in a single day so at least it wasn't a huge waste of time and that's the best praise I can come up with.

Just read the book! Just do it, you will be so glad that you did! This story is moving. It follows this family on a literal journey, not just a physical journey but an emotional one as well. Told from several perspectives, I felt like I was there observing and watching everything unfold right in front of me. From Gary, Troy, Moses, and Meg, you get to see things from every perspective. The supporting characters were every bit as important as the main characters and I loved them just as much. This story is a journey of healing, heartache, laughter, love, and forgiveness. Even the Dog Knows will have you reflecting on your own life and what is most important. A life changing book that shares important lessons and values, I would recommend this book to every reader. I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a story about Gary, his injured baseball player grandson, Troy, and the elderly family dog, Moses, taking a road trip from Virginia to Florida to see Gary's estranged wife. Along the way in Gary's old bus, they meet interesting people and Gary convinces Troy to reroute their way to talk to Grace his lost love, who joins them. Meg had left Gary after many years of marriage to join her twin sister in a retirement community in Florida and has not been well and wants to bring her family back together. This story is also about people at crossroads in their lives and about grief and how the loss of one person can affect so many people in so many ways. Sweet Moses is the lodestar who keeps several of the human characters together. There are a couple of incidents that stretch reality, but if you believe in second chances, go along for the ride. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for a honest review.

I loved this. It was poignant and fun, full of heart and love and grief. Every character was likeable, even when they weren't. I truly enjoyed reading this, a lot more than I initially expected!

I think the reunion was just so... impactful. The confessions and the callbacks and everything pulled it all together.

The only negative I really have is that I don't think the last chapter was particularly necessary - I would have been fine without the small time jump. But obviously that's not enough of a detail to completely ruin how genuinely enjoyable this book was to read and experience.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an ARC for this book!

I just didn’t care for the writing and thought that the characters and their dialogue were too unrealistic. The synopsis makes it sound like the dog plays a huge roll and affects the outcome of the story, and while it was occasionally told from his point of view, that just wasn’t the case. I found myself rolling my eyes way too often and wanting it to be over.

Yes, he's done it again. Author Jason Wright has written a book that hits you straight in the heart and makes you feel all of the feels. With dynamic, flawed characters that come alive, stay with you, and feel like old friends at the end of the book. I seriously had a hard time putting this novel down.

So many themes run through this book that at least one of them will be relatable to all readers. I know many truly touched me, such as forgiving, finally allowing yourself to grieve, letting the past go, and learning to love without any demands. Each character in this book, even the dog Moses, had things to learn, ponder on, and accept. Gary and Meg had been through a lot, especially after the death of their only child, Mallorie. Having raised their grandson Troy as their own, their lives became lost in the everyday shuffle. There was so much regret in their hearts for various reasons.

I loved the road trip on the old baseball bus. The interactions and dialogue in every chapter were humorous at times and brought me to tears in the next chapter. Gary seemed to have a way that drew people around him, even with his gruff exterior. Troy was happy to be back with his family but was unsettled as he tried running away from his past. Moses the dog, just wanted all of his people back together as one big happy family. Meg is searching for healing in her life as her golden years pass by. Every character is searching and finds their own path to healing and peace. Even The Dog Knows is an excellent read that should be read by one and all.

This book touched me. I loved the way the author wrote it from multiple points of view. Including the dog, Moses. It’s a unique story that I didn’t want to put down.

There is a lot going on in this book. You’ve got Gary. He’s an older man who has let baseball become his entire life. That lead his wife, Meg to leave him. Gary cares for Moses in the home he shared with Meg. As a reader, I could tell he had a lot of regrets about life.

Meg is living in Florida. She has regrets as well. And she is lonely. She wants to see Moses before either of them die.

I loved the journey Gary, Moses, Troy (Gary’s grandson) and Grace (a family friend) go on to get their lives back to where they want them to be. There are secrets. There are adventures. And mishaps. This is a journey with a lot of heart. And I loved how everything gets tied together at the end.

Don’t miss this one! I loved it.

I was sent a copy of Even the Dog Knows as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book is poignant and heartfelt. It challenges the reader to think about what really matters and what you’re willing to sacrifice for it. It teaches us to forgive the mistakes of others—and ourselves; to grieve what we lose but pull those we live in close; and to share the feelings we have. That family can heal you. And that maybe, just maybe, the four-legged members of our family understand more than we know.
This book really makes you experience a lot of emotions. It sucks you in and refuses to let go until the last moment. And even then, it’s debatable. You’ll want to know how things will work out. And you’ll think they won’t. There are so many twists and turns you won’t see coming and will leave you shocked and even more hooked than you already were. And you’ll love this little journey on a made-over school bus with a ragtag group, including a dog.
Speaking of the dog, Moses is sort of the best. I’ll be honest, I’m not really a dog person. But I absolutely loved Moses.
Every single character that gets page time goes through a lot or growth. It’s really incredible to see how the author could take five main characters and give them stories that needed healing. I loved watching each person grow a little and learn a lot.
I love the road trip idea and how everything played out. It was fun to read something “historical” but not actually that long ago (I forgot the original cellular phones had antennas!) and now I really want to go to Gulf Breeze. There are five human main characters and one dog, and each one gets page time dedicated to their own POV. At times I was a little confused about whose brain we were in, but it worked out.
This is a really delightful story that makes you think and takes you along on a journey. You’ll hold your breath wondering if they’ll get where they need to go and whether there will be a happily ever after. Just hold on. Good packages always deliver.

*Note/CW/TW: death by plane crash; lying; marriage separation; grief; old age; heart attack; car accident; stabbing and hospitalization; mention of animal control putting down pet.

**Many thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy of the book. I voluntarily wrote this honest review, which opinion belongs only to myself.

Quotes I loved:
“You don’t endure love, Grace. You breathe it.” -Mark

“We don’t love each other because of what we do—we love each other because of who we are.” -Grace

And a dog 🐕

Thank you to Shadow Mountain for sending me an ARC in exchange of on honest review.

Book Synopsis: " Meg Gorton finds herself alone and lonely in Florida. Three years earlier, she packed what she could fit into her sister's car, told her husband, Gary, where he could find her, and asked him to take care of Moses, their beloved black Labrador. For years, she'd tried to talk Gary into moving away from their home in Woodstock, Virginia. They both needed a fresh start after a painful loss and when their grandson Troy graduates from high school, Meg knows it's time. But Meg also knows that if she wants a new beginning, she'll have to do it alone. Now, with some looming health issues, Meg has a plan to finally bring Gary to Gulf Breeze.

Gary wasn't able to move on the same way Meg did. Haunted by the family's tragedy, and painfully aware of his guilt because he feels so responsible, he's stuck with nothing but a gig as owner and driver of the bus for his local minor league baseball team. And, of course, he still thinks about the day his wife drove away. At least he still has Moses, who is always willing to listen when Gary talks about his regrets and all the things he should have done differently.

Everything changes when Meg writes Gary a letter with a surprise request. She wants him to bring Moses to Florida so she can see Moses one last time. Gary is reluctant to go, but Troy loves the idea and suggests they could even travel together on Gary's bus. Along the way, Gary takes a detour to visit Troy's ex-girlfriend, Grace—the one who got away. Gary might not know how to fix things with his wife, but he knows he doesn't want Troy to make the same mistakes he did.

Although Moses is just a dog, he's very observant. He knows things—like that Gary hasn't been the same since Meg left, Troy is hiding something, and Grace's fingers smell like bacon. It doesn't take long for Moses to learn they are going on a road trip to see Meg. He misses her and senses Gary's loneliness. He also knows he's an old dog and that his time is near, but there are still important things only he can do."

A grand road trip on a baseball bus!

This story was heartwarming and really got into the essence of family bonds (dogs included). A simple trip to take a dog to visit an estranged wife, turned into so much more including meeting some new friends on the way.

I really liked the part of the story that was from Moses's (the old dog) perspective. It gave that 3rd party type view of the others characters and their personalities and issues.

It was a bit slow getting to the road trip part, but I really liked it from that point on. A road trip on a retrofitted bus would be a lot of fun just like this book!

Plot:

It has been three years since Meg left him standing in his yard, unable to cry, as Gary watched his wife drive away with her sister to Florida. Gary was never able to move on as Meg did. After witnessing the tragic death of their daughter, Meg and Gary raise their grandson Troy as their own son, inspiring him to follow the Gorton dream of playing in the MLB. As all Gorton men were good baseball players, none of them were great enough to play in the MLB, before Troy. Wanting his son to follow his passion, Gary spent more time coaching and watching baseball than spending time with Meg, talking to her as a husband should. Which is why she left. When Troy comes home with an injury, he demands Gary take the baseball bus down to Florida and visit Meg. As Meg is dying, slowly but dying all the same, and writes to Gary one request, to bring down Moses so she can see him one last time. Moses, the family dog, is a big black Labrador who has been keeping Gary company in Virginia after Meg left him. Unwillingly, Gary loads the bus up, and begins the journey to Florida, towards Meg, towards a stranger or his wife, and Gary still does not know what he is going to say.

Thoughts:

Jason Wright writes this story about the old timely love that ran out of time due to the tragedy of life, and how a dog can fix it. This story has heart, as Wright writes from the third person point of view and follows Gary, Meg, Troy, Grace, and Moses (yes the dog gets their own story), as Gary answers Meg’s letter asking him to bring her Moses before her, or the dog, dies. The emotions, leading up to the bus arriving in Florida, to the time there, Wright really dives into readers' heartstrings in this one. Gary is a hard character to love. As a grumpy old man, Gary is set in his ways, and you can see it as he begrudgingly drives down to Florida to see the wife he misses, but does not want to confront. Meg is a bit more loveable, as someone who has seen her fair share of life’s worst, you can begin to see that she did not leave Gary, her husband, but Gary the stranger who took her husband's place after the death of their daughter and after Troy grew up. This novel has its ups and downs, as all good road trip novels do, like Gary, Troy, and Moses stumble into their own mini adventure on the road to Meg. With fast pace writing, Wright perfectly times the novel out to give you just the right amount of pre-road trip, the road trip itself, and the post-road trip that makes you feel satisfied with how the story works out. With the love that is there, grief is thick within this novel, from Greg and Meg losing their daughter, Troy never knowing his birth father, Troy relationship with baseball, him and Grace, a high school sweetheart he thought he’d be with forever, and Grace, trying to find her place in the Gorton family. Wrights spares no details in this grief allowing for wise conversations between Gary and Grace, insightful tidbits from Meg to Macy, there is a lot of time wright focus on loss, devastation, and regret, before giving up a beautiful ending. Speaking of Macy, a perfect character, who loves her in every way, Wright did not need to make her a part of the Gorton story like that, being Meg’s friend was fine, and fine alone. Overall, this is an emotional story, full of older people trying to do right by each other, with its beautiful crafter story, it is definitely a book you do not want to put down.

My heart was drawn into this touching story of love and loss right from the beginning. I felt drawn into Gary and Meg's relationship from the moment they meant. And then my heart broke when I read about the grief they experienced at the loss of their daughter and how it ultimately drove them apart. The story is told from three points of view, Gary, Meg, and their dog, Moses. This gives the reader more information and insight than any of the characters have by themselves. The addition of Troy, Gary and Meg's grandson who they raised as their own son, and his ex-girlfriend makes for an interesting additional plot line. The dog's point-of-view provides a different perspective on everything that is happening. Moses just wants to be with his family and for everything to work out.

When Meg, living in Florida, asks to see Moses one more time, Gary (very reluctantly), Troy, and Moses head out in the old bus that Gary uses to transport the local baseball team to games. The trip proves to be much more eventful than any of them would have expected. While the 'boys' are witnessing accidents, taking detours, and helping a homeless wanderer, Meg and her health care aide, Macy, prepare for their arrival.

The lessons learned and the hearts touched stayed with me as I completed the journey with the characters. Not only did I find this an interesting story, but the themes of family, grief, guilt, and forgiveness resonated with me as well. Wright knows how to tell a story, with enough detail to help the reader feel like they are right there with the characters. Ultimately, this is a story of hope, of love, and of overcoming obstacles and heartbreaking circumstances, not by accident or luck, but by choice.

A must read for anyone who has ever loved a dog, but it’s not just about the dog. It’s really about the couple, their daughter and grandson. The author creates characters that are very likeable and easy to relate to, especially the dog.

This book starts in 1951 when Gary Gorton meets Meg Washington. Both are from Virginia, he’s a baseball player and mechanic during the winter, she’s a secretary. Then it jumps to 1992 when Gary is 70. Meg left him three years earlier and moved to Florida with her sister after 39 years of marriage. Now Meg thinks she is dying and asks Gary to bring their 11-year-old Black Lab named Moses to her so she can say goodbye. A chapter is told from his perspective, a chapter from hers, then one from the dog’s.

Other memorable characters are introduced. Their daughter Mallorie died but they won’t talk about it, creating a huge rift in their relationship. Grandson Troy lived with Gary and Meg until he graduated and moved to Texas to play baseball. Grace is his high school sweetheart and Robbie Basham is his birth father. Mark Richards is a homeless man with a dog named Beverage. Meg has a home healthcare aid named Macy who comes in a few times a week to help and provide companionship. Meg’s letter writing club friends are hilarious.

I think I’ve read most of Jason F. Wright’s books and this is one of my favorites. I was expecting a surprise following the pattern in his other books, but still didn’t see this one coming. Five stars! Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC to use for my review.

Even the Dog Knows is another sweet read from Jason F. Wright. Mr. Wright has a way of telling stories that make you feel like you’re reading about real people. He brings his characters to life from the pages. In this case, he even brings us the dog.

The prologue sets the stage for what we know must be a lifelong love story. And then it isn’t.
The main story opens by reintroducing us to Gary, and to his beloved dog Moses. Moses is a big old black Labrador, with loads of canine wisdom. Gary, an avid baseball fan, especially where his beloved minor league team is concerned, and Moses, are both mourning the breakup of Gary’s marriage to Meg, and her move to Florida.

When Meg begins suffering health issues, she asks Gary to come to Florida and bring Moses to see her one last time. And that’s where this story really begins.

Gary and Moses plan their adventure to drive Gary’s team bus to Florida. Encouraged by their grandson Troy, who decides to go with Gary, the three of them begin their adventure.
And quite the adventure it is. It involves a detour to see Troy’s ex-girlfriend, a car chase, mechanical troubles on the bus, interesting people, a bit of tension, a little romance for Moses, and all the other things that go along with a cross-country road trip.

I enjoyed this story thoroughly. Though the book is about 300 pages, it was a quick and fun read for me. I found lots of surprises throughout the story that kept me turning the pages to see what was coming next. If you love dogs, love people, love baseball, or even love Jason Wright stories, you’ll want to read Even the Dog Knows.

I received an ARC of Even the Dog Knows through Shadow Mountain Publishing asking that I read it and feature it on my page. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

I found this to be a very cute read. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into with this one. However, as soon as I started I knew we were going to have such an adventure. This gave me strong vibes of the movie, A Dog’s Purpose, including the occasional chapters set in the point of view of our aging dog, Moses. Though if I’m honest, I would have loved to see more chapters set in Moses' point of view. I think this book would have been even more entertaining to read if that was the case.

And before you ask, no the dog doesn’t die. However, that is the concern for this premise.

I didn’t find much of this book to be all that surprising, in regards to the overall plot. Though some of the events that occurred during the road trip were a bit surprising. Moses is one keen old dog! But as I said, I found this to be such a cute read that focuses on healing and forgiveness. The ending definitely made my heart swell.

I think anyone who enjoys contemporary novels set around family will definitely enjoy this one! Especially if you enjoyed A Dog’s Purpose.

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? In Even The Dog Knows, an ensemble of dynamic characters embark on a journey down the East Coast. In what appears to be a quick trip to deliver beloved dog Moses to Florida turns into much, much more than anyone bargained for. New York Times best-selling author Jason F. Wright pens this delightful tale, cramming each page full of adventure, drama and fantastic nineties references. The plot is fast-paced and filled with surprises. Chapters are short, often end in cliff-hangers, and frequently switch narrators. Wright brings his characters to life with vivid physical descriptions, heartfelt musings and laugh-out-loud quips. With the story set in 1992, readers will enjoy the running joke about the ‘uselessness’ and ‘annoyance’ of newfangled cell phones. Even the Dog Knows champions relationships, love, and second chances. This profound tale should be added to everyone’s summer reading lists.

I absolutely loved this story. A story filled with family, love and a whole lot of forgiveness. So many characters to love and connect with.

The view from your family dog. Strangers becoming friends. Death. Grief. Grandparents being parents. High school love.

So many favorite quotes.

“Seriously, sisters. If we were all kids again, solving problems on the playground, loving everyone. No judgment, no baggage. If we went back in time and could live again, I’d have so much more fun. I’d never have another argument or criticize someone for doing things differently than I would. I’d go to the beach every day.”

“The hours rolled by, and his memories came and went with the tide.”

“Apologies. They’re beginnings, not really endings. And everyone does it their own way, don’t they?”

This is a wonderful book and not just because one of the main characters is a dog.

Anyone lucky enough to have had a black lab as a companion will recognize Moses as a kindred spirit to their own silly and loveable pet. The author also realistically portrays the bond between Moses and his humans as well as the importance of bacon.

The love Gary, Meg, Troy and Grace have for Moses is crucial to reestablishing the connections they once had with each other. It's a beautiful story with great pacing and colorful characters.

I really enjoyed reading about the bus and the journey all the people went on with a very good boy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Any story with our precious fur babies as a main character will always be my favorite.

This lighthearted story will warm your insides because it’s so good. So many trials and tribulations to get to the happy ended but it was worth the whole story.

A quick read but told in just the right amount of time. The characters will have your heart from the beginning.

If you love dogs, this one is for you!

Thanks to NetGalley, shadow mountain books and Jason f wright for the arc.

This is the first book I've read by this author. This book was SO SO GOOD! I had tears brimming at times (not good, since I often listen while I'm working). This book was well written, well paced, and creative. It kept my attention and was hard to put down, and I just kept going until I plowed through the whole thing. More than worth the time to read. I'll have to check out the other works offered by this author.

This is the most wonderful, poignant story about tragedy, loss, grieving, separation, misunderstanding, relationships, plus, love, dedication, breaking away, forgiveness and compassion.
After a devastating tragedy, a family chooses very different paths in dealing with the sudden loss. Caught in the middle of this separation are a boy and a dog.
This writer includes the dogs' thoughts as well as each individual involved. Their journey in life is experienced in different ways.
After years, the individuals involved are forced to face their secrets. A couple of mysteries unfold in a shocking conclusion.
This is a fantastic book for Book Clubs and family reading. There are many wonderful points for discussion presented within these pages. It even adds a small amount of humor. It is very well written. It steadily moves along, constantly bringing up new scenarios and ebbing the reader's curiosity along.
The characters are all very endearing, the scenes are easily visualized, the Title and Cover Image are very well-chosen.
If you are a fan of Pail Evans, you will love this writer as well.

*This book was gifted me with no pressure to post a positive review. This is my honest review.

Wonderful story that you will enjoy.
A touching story of working through loss, dealing with past memories, and moving forward after being stalled in the grief. Gary and Meg’s daughter died when her child, Troy, was an infant. Troy is now twenty-two and on his own but his grandfather has not been able to move forward. Instead, he has immersed himself in baseball. With Gary’s total focus being on baseball and especially on the minor league team in his area, Meg soon feels that there is nothing left for her and moves to Florida with her sister leaving Gary and their dog Moses behind. Now three years later Meg is requesting that Gary bring Moses to Florida for one last visit. And so, the trip begins with Gary, Troy and Moses with side trips to see Troy’s old girlfriend, breakdowns and hitchhikers adding to the warmth and appeal of the story. Through it all, Moses adds his observations, not in some strange way that has the reader really having to suspend reality, but simply observations of when and what makes the people around him happy, moody, or sad that he manifests through tail wagging, happy barks and howls when faced with sadness and tensions he can’t understand. Everyone has secrets. Everyone is trying to figure out how to live their lives and what they want their life to look like going forward but only Moses seems to be able to reduce things to their simplest form, this brings joy, that brings sadness. A very engrossing read as you watch the growth, understanding, and acceptance in each character.

Jason F Wright tugs at the heart strings once again! Even The Dog Knows is a heartfelt and inspirational story of family, loss, regret and finding forgiveness in the twists and turns of marriage and life. This one takes us on a thousand mile road trip with an unforgettable lab named Moses along for some lighter moments and even a dogs perspective. A must read!
