This book features two folk stories- a Chinese Cinderella type story and a story explaining why owls come out at night and crows are black. The stories are well written and would make good bedtime read aloud. 4 star review because the clip art and numerous fonts is a little distracting. Custom illustrations would improve this book. But a solid story to borrow and read.
“Queens & Owls” Folk Stories From Around the World,” is a picture book with two engaging stories to captivate young children. The first is “Ye Xian,” first written in the year 853, China. The title character is a beautiful young lady who lives with a cruel stepmother: it is a variation of the Cinderella we are familiar with today. (Trigger warning: a pet fish is killed) The second story, “Crows & Owls,” is a fanciful tale of how crows may have come to be as they are now.
This book contains two fairytales. The first is a spin on the Classic Cinderella. The second was about why crows are black and why owls come out at night. Both are really enjoyable read. I loved the illustrations. This style of writing from a different time. I love the idea of the old presented in a new way.
These stories have a classic fairy tale feel but are not the same stories you’ve heard 100 times. I appreciate the cultural elements that are involved and the writing flows nicely. These stories could be enjoyed by most ages.
At first the book seems like it's based on Cinderella with a wicked stepmother and a beautiful girl. But you soon lose yourself in the story and in the incredible font, colour and page design which is so compelling and adds great atmosphere. An unusual and delightful little tale.
These stories make for a good bedtime read. The first story was very reminiscent of a Chinese Cinderella story. It was engaging and captivating throughout. Great film stories!
Love the folk stories and learning different things around the world. A different twist to bedtime stories. Not your ordinary Cinderella story. I especially enjoyed the Chinese folk stories as I am an ESL teacher and teach little ones in China.
If you like fairytales you’ll love these stories. 2 stories contained in the book. I enjoyed the layout and the illustrations. Kids will enjoy both reading and being read to.
Interesting Two short folk tales in one book. I liked the book for two reasons, one for the traditional tales, and two, for the creative presentation of writing style. Playing around with font styles and size gets children's attention, who are the intended audience for this book.
Great stories and the first one DOES ring a bell! Lovely to read stories that are ancient, yet new and universal. The second story is also great and comes with a great reasoning!
A beautiful twist on a familiar tale. While this story is based off Cinderella the twist on the new storyline kept my attention and I was honestly intrigued throughout.
I don't want to give it away, but my favorite of these stories is the one of the owl and the crow. I have not heard that story before and actually enjoyed it.
Classic fairy tales with a unique spin! Kids will enjoy the cultural diversity and colours in the 2 stories. Interesting beginning and as the plots progress, young readers will for sure draw the parallel with classic tales. Fun read!
Wonderful story Very colorful. My daughter enjoyed The bright colors and pictures. This book features two folk stories- a Chinese Cinderella type story and a story explaining why owls come out at night and crows are black.
An interesting Chinese version of Cinderella. I find it fascinating to read the different versions of classic tales. I do wish the illustrations were a bit more uniform but I think kids will really enjoy this book!
This was a fun way of slightly changing a classic Cinderella story. We enjoyed the owl and crow story, and goes to show to be nice and not mean to each other or there could be consequences.
Really liked reading the story of Ye Xian and it reminds me of Cinderella. The owl and crow story is interesting and kind of funny too. Children will like this fairy tale and story about the owl and crow.
