It’s a unique cover that made me pick it up. Obviously cover is so apt that it tells a lot about the book. I will briefly summarise the blurb trying to avoid spoilers. Prof. Sushant Gupta, is on a quest. He went to Golgotha hills of Kashmir to St. Mary’s Basilica to find mortal remains of Jesus. He is forty and married. His relationship with God and the nature of existence had been a troubled one. The first chapter has proper narration of an archeological description. The plot becomes interesting from the second chapter when the Putli is reborn. The book is filled with apt pictures. The author has created a nice horror and thrill. The story moves at faster pace that makes the plot interesting. The language of the book is lucid so that everyone can enjoy reading it. I liked certain theories that author developed that runs between religious beliefs. Author has created a nice supernatural touch with realistic scenarios. Overall good one. I enjoyed reading it.
Puttli is a horror novella by Anuj Tikku. This book is way different from the normal horror stories as it is also about the life of Jesus Christ (JC). As we read the book, we came across Sushant Gupta, an archaeologist in his mid 40s. He lives alone in a jungle where he is busy in his current project of excavation. With him lives his servant Bhola.
The story is mostly set against India and in between there is coverage of Vatican City and Pope. Apart from a fictional tale, the book marks the religious controversy as it is against the belief of Christianity that JC did not die in Jerusalem but in Kashmir, in India.
While excavating, Sushant and his team discover a church and human bones and a doll with one eye. On the back of the doll is written Puttli. After some research Sushant confirms that bones indicate that JC spent his life in Kashmir after Crucifixion. And the doll was made by him as he was a carpenter.
Sushant does not believe in religion and faith. He kept the doll with him. But his servant Bhola knows that the doll is a bad omen and may bring bad luck in and around. Sushant shuns off his ideology. The other façade of the novel deals with Pope’s influence on the Christian world. According to the Pope, 3 tombs of JC are in Jerusalem, and the fourth should be there as well. But Sushant’s report says otherwise. This did not go well with Pope. So, he sends one of his trusted men Jim Jones to India.
If you follow the story and read it completely, you will come to know as what happened to Jim and what was the real face and force of the doll Puttli. Say anything but the doll altered the perception of Sushant about religion and faith. He was forced to believe in the power of God.
Compared to other books of Anuj Tikku, this one is bit serious and off the track. It can potentially stir the controversy as it involves Christianity religion. The language is simple and easy to understand. However, there were many editing and typing errors that could have been taken care of.
Putli: wanna play by Anuj Tikku is a horror/historical adventure thriller that'll pique your interest with its intricate imaginary plot and intriguing historical truths.
This is a tense, fast-paced storey about an archaeologist named Professor Sushant Gupta who is on a mission to recover Jesus' remains in Kashmir's Golgotha hills. However, otherworldly forces infiltrate his work as a result of the discovery of a wooden doll named Putli. A sequence of jump scares and strange occurrences ensue, culminating in a tremendous bloodbath.
Prof. Gupta's character journey is depicted in detail, from his first loss of trust in God following his mother's death to the gradual restoration of his lost convictions as his project advances. Gupta's internal struggle is brilliantly depicted, as he seeks relief by rationalising every strange occurrence with science. The descriptive account of Kashmir's valleys and hills, which would convey a feeling of imagery to avid readers, was one of my favourites. The name St. Mary's Basilica, as well as the possibility of discovering Jesus' mortal bones, gives it an exciting historical adventure thriller flavour which brings to mind Dan Brown and his works. The Rozabal Line by Ashwin Sanghi gave us some info earlier. This historical fiction element adds a degree of intrigue that will keep the reader in illusion.
The scary pictures in the book will give you some spine chilling visuals while you go through the book. Editing needs a bit of improvement. Overall a great read from the great author.
If you are a fan of horror this is for you and this will provide you with some curious info about the old beliefs and history altogether.
So, yes, I read First ever Horror book and it was creepy! I don't know what I expected from a horror novel but after reading this short horror story not sure if I'm gonna read one again 😂 This book was good, though the time I chose for reading was not! The writing style was simple, over the 50 pages we see the doll and what she does and how she is tamed which was very creepy but... Interesting? So if you're looking for a short horror story go for this one!
