Kait Silver #2

Blood Magic

Rate this book
My new alpha did the impossible. He freed my hobbled wolf.

And though I've craved a pack and an alpha since I was a rejected kid, I rebel against being anything less than his equal--even as my wolf worships the very ground he walks on. It makes for an interesting dynamic.

Flung headfirst into the supernaturals' world, I am no longer a lonely, agonized outcast running from the moon. My power is growing, I have amazing people around me, and the grateful mayor has set me up with an office and a legitimate job.

For a minute, everything is quiet. Too quiet. Even the demon seems to have disappeared. And all that peace is just a little unsettling.

But then a human hires me to go after the vampires--specifically the county master--and my world explodes into chaos.

Good thing I like chaos.

But when the demon returns with a vengeance, the council makes me an offer I don't want to refuse, and an infamous and scary as hell hunter blows into my life, the peace and quiet starts looking pretty damn good...

This is second in an Urban Fantasy series and story and character arcs build from book to book. I definitely recommend reading them in order.

So you mostly know what to expect for this story. Only this one has us finding a more screwed up society than shifters as Kait gets pulled into a problem with vampires. Her friend group has expanded from events in the first book and she has an actual job with shadow-funding that works because I want it to. And I loved all the characters and their growing dynamic as a team. Yes, they're a small moral force in the midst of a lot of messed up jerks high on their own power. And blood. But they're determined and resourceful and I love that they keep doing their best to fix things.

This book reveals a shadowy "council" that's never fully fleshed out and I'm not sure what to think of that. They seem to have some moral foundation, and even kindness. Which is good because Kait ends up deputized on their behalf in this story and that has me worried given how corrupt all the power structures have been so far. At any rate, it forms a backdrop to the true evil that comes out in this story.

And I think I'll leave it at that. I'm totally in this for the friends. I'm still not decided about Jared. He seems like a nice-enough guy and I like how careful he's being and that his pack is starting to take his lead on not being complete jackwagons. So I won't mind if something continues to develop between him and Kait. I particularly like how his insights always build her up, even when he's delivering a check or roadblock Kaitlyn had been ignoring.

I'm going to give this the full five stars. I will note that there's some real horror in this story and bad things happen to characters I care about. So this story isn't going to be to general taste.

A note about Chaste: Kait and Jared do seem like they're headed for a romantic relationship. I like how careful Jared is being about it because he is in a power position with her, though she's quickly growing past his control for reasons that are still hidden. And I mean that in a good way and he seems to be aware and encouraging that growth (possibly, at least in part, because it brings her closer to being a true partner and that looks like a thing he craves). At any rate, there's no steam, though shifter-related nudity is present.

Book two in the five book series. Kait Silver has recovered from the events in the last book and is now a respectable paranormal.detective with her own office and staff. Max her assistant and Joe her bodyguard/muscle/helped (whatever she needs him to be. Lucy is now a permanent member of her household and is getting to be more like a younger sister. Katie first client at her new office wants her to find his wife, it's no ordinary missing person case, he knows exactly who took his wife. It was a vampire, now in Kaits world vampires aren't like they are in the books........ Well yes, they are quite attractive and sexy but if you look closely you can see the deafness and evil in their eyes, they cannot hide what they are for long. Kait asks Jared ............ Her woods alpha ............ For help to find the vampire in charge of her region but he refuses ordering her to stay away from them. Obviously Kait does not take that well and manages to find the information she needs from a very unlikely source. She goes to visit this master vampire not expecting to get over his doorstep surprisingly he lets her in and agrees to meeting with her. But that when things take a turn for the worse, Kait loses her temper and does something very unwise, now Kait is allowed to leave the masters Kait but knows she has made a powerful enemy who isn't going to wait long before he comes for her. In Pairs world the rule is kill or be killed but how does a literal baby werewolf supposed to kill a master vampire ................. There's no way she can win this right ... But Kait will.go.down fighting..................

I liked this one a lot better than the last one, and it makes the last one feel better in retrospect. It's almost as if Kait's eagerness to be accepted by the shitty pack members in the last book was more leftover baggage from her hobbled wolf - that desperation to have back what had been taken from her.

In this book, she's free and finding her footing in that. Deciding who she wants to be. And while she likes Jared very much (and while he's pretty secondary in this book, what we do see of him is really good - supportive, solid, respectful), she doesn't like his pack and doesn't really care to be part of it.

And that's good. They don't deserve her. Maybe going forward there will be a clean slate... maybe. But at least she doesn't seem like she is going to put up with their abuse. And Jared doesn't seem like he will tolerate it any further either. He cares about her, but in the best way - the way that means standing back and letting her be free as she figures out who she is and what she wants. So I like that. Not super thrilled at the inevitable pack drama if/when she and he get together, but he's worth it, I think.

There was a lot that happened in this book, and I'm not sure I understand all the implications. But it was all good story development.

I'm seriously just gobbling this series down, but I definitely am enjoying it. Boo that the next one is all that is released so far... I'm sure I'll be bummed. But at least so far none of the books have ended on a cliffhanger.

So we get a lot more drama and death in this one with the inclusion of the Vampires- and more 'strays' into Kait's circle.

I will however agree with Kait's statement that she needs more gal pals in her life because we got bombarded with more guys in this one with Joe, Max (her PI workers) Bastian the Vamp, Remy the Killer, and Zach the Vampire Hunter/Slave. The latter three having some kind of tension ? maybe I would say with our FL.

However, I think I liked the Pack more in this one-mostly because the Pack really isn't in it (and b.c Jared understands and doesn't push the fact that he has a certain sway with Kait because of his Alpha status) and mostly because Kait comes more into her own power in this one and grows as a person.

Might read on.

Still REALLY enjoying this series, to the point that I’m having a terrible time getting anything else in my life done! SHAEESH! I keep telling myself life must go on but my butt is still in the chair with the book in my hands. It is that addictive.

In this installment we are introduced to a shadowy “council” that has called on Kait to be their enforcer. I’m not sold on that, partly because they (or the author) didn’t give anyone enough explanations as to what exactly her duties are, yet pushed her out into the world of vampires to police them. AND, when the big bad Vamp they need put down comes for her, she doesn’t even use that card they gave her to use when she needs them! Huh? Why not? Why would she race headlong into a situation that might kill her without getting some back-up from the very “people” that ordered her to do it?!? Makes no sense.

Still, I love her and the characters that surround her, from Detective Moreno, to Lucy to Jared. They are all very relatable and lovable side-kicks that keep a reader reading, and loving these books!

I binged this series this weekend.
First of all thank you Laken Cane for putting this up on audible to borrow for free.

I can't exactly tell what kept me going on with this series. I think it was this weird Romance in this book and also the mystery what kind of supernatural is Kait Silver? What are the secrets she is keeping and which are kept from her.

I enjoyed all the books and my rating is 3.5 to four stars for all the books. I like the main leads and thee side characters. My favorite were two side characters: Ash the rescued dog and Lucy the rescued human girl.

I liked the slow burn of the romance but when they finally give in it gets spicy.
I had a good time listening to the audiobooks.

While I still enjoyed Kait's personality as a whole, the world and the plot became rather chaotic in this book, with so many different simultaneous issues going on.

1. Kait and Jared's relationship
2. Kait's relationship with Jared's pack
3. The loose demon that Kait took her demon blade from that is still roaming at large
4. The whole deal with the local county vampire abusing humans and
5. The serial killer that Lucy kept seeing dreams from
6. Their pet dog Ash... is he supposed to be significant in any way or just a random at home pet?
7.
8.
9.
10. Kait's ex-alpha persistent in trying to dominate her and keep her under his control but not let her shift???
11. Kait accepted a new role

So many different plot lines with only a select few that were fully resolved by the end of the book. I'm still interested enough in her development to continue the series, but it's been super confusing who is supposed to be Kait's true romantic interest when pretty much every male she comes across is described as attractive.

Getting to see Kait be a wolf and that side of herself finally be free is a lovely surprise. But what isn't a surprise is that her human side can't and doesn't want an alpha. She has had to be her own alpha for so long that it's not natural to her and why would we think it would be?

The council was a surprise, and I liked that whole dynamic. By Kait rejecting Jared's pack it's not like she is rejecting him really. I think everyone is better off with how things happened, if I am being honest. I think we can all see Kait is different and just because she can shift doesn't mean she will change. Parts of her do, for sure, but her nature is to help and to heal those who need healing, and that's not just going to go away because her wolf can come out.

If anything, it makes her want to help more, knowing the relief she can maybe give to someone else.

I am loving this series, and I liked how book two ended with an, Oh, what's going to happen but not a big cliffy.

But I am still going to jump into book three because why not!?

Again, I love this narrator. I am not 100% on board with some of the voices she gives some of the characters, but at least I don't get confused as to who is talking!

“Blood Magic” is a great follow up installment in the Kait Silver series. This time Kait discovers what the Mayor wanted to gift her. It is an office equipped with two pail employees, Max and Joe.

Kait’s first client is a walk in off the street. He believes his wife has been kidnapped by a vampire and he wants her back. Kaitlyn knows what he is saying is true and the pictures from his cell phone cinches it for her.

When Kait asks her alpha to help her find the vampire master he refuses. So, her trusty office manager, Max provided her with the information she needs. Upon meeting Axton the vamp she understands why her alpha didn’t want her to approach the vamp. It also doesn’t help that Kait punches the vamp in the face.

Kait is asked to dig up another vamp, Bastien, join with the vampire council as their enforcer, deal with the pesky demon and work with a supernatural creature hunter. What? It’s all in a days work, right?

There is so much going on in this read as well as so much to recommend this series. I love Kait’s character. She is fierce, self sacrificing and loyalty to those she befriends. The action is off the charts and the simmering romantic tension between Kait and her alpha promises an entertaining future. I’m so glad I stumbled on this series.

Hmmm, this second read i didn't love the main female character as much. Her bigotry was really off putting (reminded me of Jeanine frost's "kat" character). I also stand by my first assessment about little to no progression in either character development or relationship development, if anything it felt like these two areas might have regressed.
** I felt like the MFC came off as selfish and self absorbed in this installment. I did like the new side characters though.

3.75
I enjoyed this, but at times it felt unnecessarily repetitive. There is also very little movement on any of the romance fronts. I might take a break before reading book 3.

Highly disappointing compared to the first. Kait couldn't make anything consist in her thoughts during this book. One minute she hates vampires, the next second she's power hungry for the council. One moment all she wants in a pack, the next she's basically giving that up. It's a constant back and forth with no real explanation. I don't think I will be continuing the series, the rest of the reviews showcase that Kait continues to be like this.

I thought this book was even better than the first. I love the community the heroine builds around herself and how the secondary characters are treated. I love how the world broadens as we and the heroine learn more about it.

You will need to read the first book in this series, Broken Moon, to understand the characters and relationships plus one of the bad guys that Kait fights is also in this book.

Laken Cane is back with her next book in her Kait Silver series, Kait finds out just how much darkness is in the supernatural world:
Kait has been flung into the supernatural world with the release of her wolf and though she has craved to be part of a pack, she's not sure if she or the pack is ready for that yet. Kait's power is growing and she is itching for a job, so when a human walks in and want to hire her to go after a Master Vampire, she is all in. But this world is new to Kait and her actions have some serious consequesces as not only is she going to have to deal with the vampires but a certian Demon comes calling and he will stop at nothing to get his knife back.

This was a good follow up book to the first one but it just didn’t hit like the first one did, and I think it was a the pacing. It would go super fast then super slow and the fight scenes were on point for me but I’m not sure just the flow was just off to me. I think that Cane tried to do too much in this book, this book could have been about 3 books in one. I don’t mind multiple cases or bad guys but none of the stories seemed completely fleshed out and just rushed through our. I also didn’t like that what drew me to the first book, Kait being a loan wolf whose power was hobbled was already taken care of.

I like that Cane like to introduce different creatures in her book (not as many as the first book), especially in the final vampire battle that was pretty cool. And I loved that the Vampires were not weak beautiful kind but deadly, torture those around you kind. Makes the big bad that much worse in this book

It was a little tiring hear her talk about how she’s the baddest one in the room, I mean I like a kickass heroine and all but they don’t need to brag about it. Kait also seems to have endless power that has not yet been fully explained and nothing seems to really hurt her or keep her down for long.

I did like this book, but not as much as the first. I will continue on in the series to see where Laken takes this series and characters plus this book is a lot darker than I thought it would be, which I am here for.

Enjoy!!!!

This is exactly what I feared the sequel would be.
The many weaknesses and flaws are particularly frustrating because this series doesn't feel like just another slight variation on a decades-old formula. It is fresh and interesting and intriguing and surprising things are happening. The world feels real and full of detail and the book isn't afraid of unexpected twists and turns.
But the author fails miserably at keeping it all together and consistent. It's chaos, full of utterly absurd, illogical, and contradictory details and scenes, many of which don't even serve any purpose at all. It's just a confused mess. Nothing actually holds together if you look at anything for more than a second. To be fair the first book already was quite messy, but it was still tolerable for me.

With these kinds of chaotic sequels, I always ask myself how nobody noticed any of this in the editing and alpha reader reviewing or even just when reading through the final script for the last time.
There are only 3 potential explanations that make sense to me.
1. The author noticed but knew that a timely release is more important than proper proofreading and authors with different priorities just rarely manage to release anything.
2. There are a lot more people that simply don't notice these discrepancies than I can even imagine.
3. A lot of authors are so careless in editing and proofreading their books that nobody notices any of this stuff until it is already released.

Regardless of which one it is, giving this 2 stars is generous.

New fave series this year

That was a good ending. And dang but I like the writing more for it. Very story-teller-esque at times and I’m here for the vibe.

I like Kait a lot. I think there’s some details that make me want to backtrack but otherwise I love the story. The constant clients and cases she has to take on. It kept me engaged. I’m always thinking about it.

Kait has to deal with vampires this time, while getting a little more info on what she is. I didn’t say this last time, but I think there’s something with her dad. I don’t like that it flip flops when it has no problem detailing everything else, but aside from that, I enjoy the mystery. I think a broader look at the supernatural world was awesome. Liked where this is going because of what she is and what she could be to everyone else. It’s funny how theres soooorta a love thing but not really? There’s always someone new to look over. I like that.

Don’t care how, I want it now

The mystery of the book is excellent. This is the 2nd series that I have read lately where the characters are good, the central story of each book is solid, and the carryover conflicts that connect each book are handled well. (The other is the Demon series by Stacia Stark, if anyone is on the lookout for a recommendation).

I typically enjoy a good PI novel and the paranormal twist here makes the books even more fun to read. I am very glad that the author is taking a slow approach to the romantic relationship aspect because the conflicts between the erstwhile fmc and mmc are significant. It would detract from both characters were they to jump into bed together and ignore their responsibilities.

My only complaint is that I didn’t enjoy Laken Crane’s other series and it’s going to be months before the next book is released. Much like Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka, I want it now.

I most definitely need more Kait

5 star rating

Ms. Cane has a way of writing a story that captures your attention and makes you want more. I most definitely need more of Kait Silver. This was book two to this new series. The first one left me wanting more but this second one left me needing more.

Kait is one badass main female lead. The storyline was very captivating. The plot continues to thicken, the action right on point, and the romance! Dang, it is slow and torturous but I bet it's going to be so sweet when it happens. The author has a way of building the chemistry and relationship between the main characters. I'm more than excited with the new characters that came into play and can't wait to see what their role will be with Kait.

August cannot come soon enough.

Great second installment

Read within hours of starting. We get to see more layers to Kait and her continuing survivability in this installment. I suspect there is more to her than simply wolf-demon and a touch of madness and I love it. Cane is building up a potentially super powerful character without it seeming forced. Every time Kait discovers something new about herself, it is earned and she takes some serious hits in this one.
The ending is wonderfully joyous with a great feeling of melancholy foreshadowing.
Remy was a good character to introduce as Kait's foil and I doubt we are seeing the last of him. I'm also enjoying the sparks flying between Kait and Jared towards the end of the book, plus the fact that she can get herself in and out of trouble without always needing rescue- though sometimes it helps. I give a double thumbs up to this sightly whack-o heroine.

This is Urban Fantasy, NOT Paranormal Romance.

Excellent old-school hardcore urban fantasy. Urban Fantasy doesn't use romance as a story element. Sometimes its there, but never as the center of the story. The romance brewing here is a very slow burn and is only one small part of a fast moving, well detailed adventure. This is urban fantasy at its finest. Gritty and true to its fast moving path. Our mc, Kait, still hasn't had time to follow up on the clues about who she is. She gets quickly embroiled in a problem involving vampires in this series entry. And true to urban fantasy ethic, the vampires are not alluring creatures. They're scary and revolting. Anyway, this series is well worth a read.

Good read

Really good book. This new series of Laken Cane such an intense read, it pulls you in and doesn't let you leave until the very end. I like that Kait is a strong individual who can take care of herself, but who also have compassion and strenght to help others. I also really like that she behaves and talks like a grown up woman (so many authors lately don't know the difference between teens and grown ups). I recommend this book to those who like intence paranormal reads with mystery and thriller components to it. I finished first two books in two days, and really looking forward to the 3rd in the series.

Another wonderful tale!!

Just like I knew she would she answered a lot of cliff hanger questions with this book but true to her form even with a blissful ending there was a note of unfinished business. I love the way Laken writes it pulls you under with its fast pace and mystery but doesn’t let you not love the characters. I can’t wait for the next one!! Please keep writing in this world!!
