Freedom is within her grasp, but like everything else in her life, she’ll be forced to steal that too.
When master thief Telyn Maddox is arrested by the king’s guard, she’s caught between two worlds: a band of criminals known as the Shadow Raiders, the only family she’s ever known; and a group of persecuted shifters. Now faced with a choice, she finds herself in a deadly game, pitting her loyalty to her family and her desperate desire for freedom against each other.
Forced into hiding, shifter Cam Stryder has spent the last five years hiding to keep his sister safe—until the rare gem that gives shifters the ability to shift at-will is stolen. Now, he’s returned to the city he called home to find the one artifact that will save his race. Thrown together by fate, Telyn and Cam form a tenuous partnership that will test not only their abilities but their loyalties as well. They’re both hiding something beyond just a growing affection.
Will the secrets they harbor tear them apart or will they be strong enough to weather a treacherous path leading them to a love they never thought they’d have?
Weak first book, artificially long, felt like reading a long prologue.
Telyn as MC felt weak and helpless. She just went with the flow, and could only talk like a badass with no action to back it up. She just started to discover her gifts and the book ended.
Cam, on the other hand, felt like such a genuine and real character. His story is quite interesting and we get to know it all. Definitely book-boyfriend material. Too bad we did not get to see big bad werewolf.
There are so many other interesting characters like Cam’s sister and evil Desmond. Hope that more characters will be introduced and the old one will be developed as well.
If I will read the second book, it’s because of Cam. I genuinely want to know for sure that he and his people would be ok.
I really enjoyed this first book in this new series from this author. Having read her Claire Beckett series (and I love that one), I thought I would try this one, not realising it would be a YA/NA book, which normally puts me off a bit. However, that was not a problem at all as the two main characters, Telyn and Cam are not inexperienced teens.
Telyn is a thief working for a band of thieves under their ruthless leader Desmond. She is desperate to break free from his regime and knows that if she just completes a few more missions for him, she will have raised enough coin to break free and head off on a boat to a beach somewhere. That's all she wants for herself! That and to find out who she really is and where she came from. I like Telyn - even though she was a young 18 year old, she was a determined young woman, who only wanted a better life for herself even if that meant doing unscrupulous things right now!
Cam, on the other hand, is a half shifter, desperate to locate a hidden gem which has been stolen from his pack. This theft is now causing many problems for them all. His hidden secrets, if found out, may cause him more problems that he could ever expect. Cam was an intriguing character - you knew there was more to him right from the beginning, but I certainly wasn't expecting his secret to be as big as it was!
To be able to get what they both need and want, they have to learn to trust one another and work together in a very precarious situation, hoping that neither of them will get caught out! Telyn begins to develop some very unusual and unknown powers and just as she is starting to use one, another seems to appear. Hopefully once she gets the hang of these powers, she will become much more powerful and useful. I did feel at times she was a bit impatient, but I understood her desperation and being unable to fully trust someone who is more or less a stranger!
I will definitely be reading more in this series as I want to see what Telyn does with her powers now and if she ever breaks free from Desmond's hold on her and I need to know that Cam's pack are ok and if he can solve the cliffhanger problem from the ending.
I received a copy of this book through BookSprout but this review is all my own!
What a great start to a new series! This is the first Molly chase book I have read and I was impressed with her writing and ability to weave a suspenseful story.
This book is generally not a genre I read often, but is something my teenagers and pre-teens would love. I did enjoy it much more then I anticipated. Magic, coming of age and adventure are a great combination. I look forward to sharing this with my kids when the print copies are available.
Telyn doesn’t remember her family or past, all she knows is that she wants out of the criminal ring that took her in and taught her. Just one last heist and she will be free. Things don’t work out that simply. Not only is she discovered as a thief, but at the same time she realizes she has some magical abilities. As she tries to find a way to freedom, she must determine who she can trust and come to grips with her discovery of new powers. Who and what is she?
Cam is trying to save his shifter pack by going on a quest for a rare gem. He teams up with Telyn and she slowly discovers who he was before he realized he was a shifter.
Telyn and Cam are both likable. They both are trying to find their way and understand the world they live in, as well as their place within that world. The romance is very low, more like at this point, but I imagine future novels in this series will allow their friendship to grow into more.
I was given an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.
Telyn is a thief with the Shadow Raiders and she is tasked with obtaining an object from one of the local Lords. With the purse from the heist, she sees the opportunity to buy her freedom. Cam is following Telyn in hopes of finding the notorious thieves of the Shadow Raiders in hopes of finding his pack's missing talisman. When Telyn is caught and put in the prison cells of the castle and then moved to the kitchens as a maid she continues to work for the Shadow Raiders. Cam uses her position in the castle to keep an eye on her and work with her to look for his packs gem. The two find plenty of trouble in the castle, Telyn is discovering her own abilities and they find that there is a spark between the two of them while working together. Looking forward to the next in series!

Secrets are what keep our hero and heroine safe, but they are also what keep them bound. Can they learn to trust each other enough to discover and share those secrets, or will they ultimately be consumed by them?
This is book one of the series, so all good there.
This is a fantasy story with a bit of a coming of age theme to it. The story is well written and easy to read with a well developed setting that is fun to explore. The characters are also well done, with solid personalities that fit the story. The plot moves at a good pace and includes enough twists and turns to keep you guessing while also including enough action to keep things interesting. Overall, this was a great start to a series and I look forward to seeing where it goes next.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from Hidden Gems for review purposes.
At the age of eight, Telyn Maddox was found alone and starving in an alley by Desmond Fang, the leader of the Shadow Raiders, the largest group of thieves in Selprince. Telyn is now almost 18 and the best thief Desmond has. When the Queen is killed by what seems to be a shifter, the King retaliates by having the Royal Guard execute as many shifters as they can. Prince Brys is disgusted with his father for the killings and disappears the next day. Now as Cam, he is living among the other surviving shifters deep in the forest. Then the princess disappears. This story is full of thievery and other sneakiness and ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

Telyn Maddox was an orphan brought into the Shadow Raiders and trained to be a master thief. They have been her only family. But now she wants to leave that life behind. Desmond finds out what she is up to and stops her plans.
Cam is a wolf shifter who is trying to recover a gem stolen from the pack that would let the wolves shift at-will. When Telyn and Cam meet each other, they join forces and work to help each other. She also has magical powers that started to manifest at her 18th birthday, and she will have to learn how to use them. Will they be successful at finding the wolves’ gem? And what was the secret about Bronwyn’s missing twin?
I liked this story that stars Telyn, a thief with a future plan to escape, and Cam, a shifter hiding with a mission, both with secrets in their past. These two end up being thrown together and trying to survive and work on their plans. But of course things do not go as they hoped or planned and thus it was an entertaining read. Kept me reading to see what they would face next and I had to see what secrets would be discovered along the way. Interesting characters and a plot with a few very shady characters with their own secrets. Enjoyed it.
A excellent paranormal storyline, with a thief who wants to escape from the life, a shifter searching for a magic jewel to save his people, secrets and intrigue abound throughout. writing is entertaining and the descriptions vivid. Wonderful characters' all with problems to overcome and secrets to hide. I loved the story and will be an avid reader of the series. I received a complimentary copy form the author and an leaving a honest voluntary review.

Interesting start to a new series. I haven’t read this author before and I’m very happy I did. This is an intriguing paranormal story that’s fresh, adventurous and suspenseful. Telyn is a young thief who begins to realizes there is more to her than what she knew, which isn’t much. This story caught my attention from the first. The writing is engaging and story is nicely crafted with vivid detail.

A really promising start to a new series with fairly mature young adults, each with different goals but united in achieving them. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5* This is a good, entertaining read with drama, danger, action, and adventure. The characters and story need more work, but for a first in series, it was entertaining. I liked it.
