This book has such potential! The side characters are fantastic and the storyline is very interesting. However, the main character is very annoying. She realizes that she is not as skilled as she thought and that when she gets involved, her lack of skills put her allies and those she cares about in jeopardy or worse. Yet, she constantly refuses to heed her own advice, and if another character gives advice or directions, she gets angry, refuses to listen, gets involved, others get hurt, and then is upset with herself because she knows she should have listened to herself and others. This cycle repeats throughout the entire story.
I'm interested in the storyline and the side characters enough to give book 2 a try, but if the main character continues acting as she did in book 1, I will be done.

When I discovered who influenced this author and her writing, I was eager to see what she brought to the table because I love those authors and haven’t read any of her works. What I discovered was a fantasy tale that was entertaining full of action and magic.
With strong characters, and surprising developments the plot thickens, and the web tightens as we wade our way through curses, secrets, death, revenge, trauma, Elves, mythology and much more.
Princess Rowena was a spoiled little girl but now she must come to grips with who she is after everything she has been through.
Rune of Secrets has great world building, and I did uncover a couple of twists but overall, it is an engaging read.
I don’t want to spoil your adventure through the pages so happy reading.

Loved this story
The world that Kelly N. Jane has created in this book is wonderfully described and you keep learning more about the land and the peoples who live there as you get more into the story. The characters are brilliant and I loved the tension and friendship that forms and builds between Rowena (the main character) and Bram (a traveller who joins and helps her). There are some lovely twists and I found it hard to put down, though I did have to keep re-reading bits as there is so much action and many details to spot.
Rowena, having been brought up protected buy a loving family, finds herself suddenly in a very different life, as it is thought that she is destined to fulfil a prophesy due to when she was born. Along the way she finds her cousin, with whom she had many similarities, travels far and makes good friends along the way; .
Would strongly recommend this action filled story and can’t wait for the next, Rune of Thorns, to read what happens next to Rowena, Bram, Safi and their friends

I'm torn on this one. It kept me engaged enough to keep reading, but I had a few unanswered questions at the end about various characters. It seemed like it flitted about in a few places, but I would still like to see the story progress and unfold further. So I will probably go on to read the next one. Plus of course I'm hoping the next one will explain the unanswered questions I have.
Felt like a long book without too much really happening. I agree with another review the main character constantly repeats her actions which is annoying. When the character knows she is doing it too. Regardless I still liked it the story.

I tried really hard to pay attention when reading this..the beginning was great. Great world building and tragic events that shaped the main character however after that…it just felt dragged out and I struggled to push myself through.
There was only so many times I could read Rowena coming up with a plan to then be caught, over and over again. It got predictable. Not a lot of romance which is what I originally expected either
The story has a lot of potential and maybe it picks up in the second book! I unfortunately don’t plan on reading anymore.

disappointed
I was hopeful for this book. The plot is good but a little predictable. The writing is sloppy and the world building isn’t thorough enough to really understand it. There’s one part in the book that she reveals a secret identity before she meant to by using the wrong name for the person. Later in the chapter it’s revealed and the main character is shocked. Overall not great. I’m unsure if I even want to mess with the second book

It is an action-packed fantasy with epic adventure, fate, prophecy, curses, danger, dramatic developments, tension, mystery, family, friendship, secrets, betrayal, jealousy, sinister intent, high stakes, a quest, revenge, and so much more.
The story blends Viking vibes, warriors and shieldmaidens, with Fae, magic, and gods – along with a mythological-esque feel - which gave this book a unique identity all its own. The world building and action scenes were superb – pulling me into all the engrossing developments right from the get-go.
Rowena’s has suffered betrayal of the highest order – losing her beloved family in the process. She may have been trained in the ways of the warrior, but she’s been outnumbered and outmaneuvered – and struggling to control the new ‘powers’ that have awoken. Meaning she’s in a very vulnerable situation. Forced to flee and then taken hostage, she becomes a pawn in a plot for power. But there is far more going on here than first meets the eye, and now it’s not just Rowena’s fate on the line. Will help come in the form of new friendships and alliances – because Rowena will need all the help she can get. And so her epic adventure begins…
Although this is advertised as a romantic fantasy/romance- there is not much in the way of romance (in this instalment anyway). If the ‘romance’ develops in future instalments, then this is what I would class as an epic slooowwww burn. There is chemistry, tension, and a little longing – but if you are expecting sizzle and spice, then you may be disappointed….

Rowena has lived a life well loved by her parents and her community. Tragedy strikes unexpectedly and she is left questioning all that she knew. When she is taken away from everything that she has known and uncovers secrets and new powers within herself, she has to decide what she wants to do more. Does she want to exact vengeance or help fulfill a prophecy and save mankind?
Bram is doing the best that he can do. He finds Rowena and tries to help guide her on the path that best fulfills the prophecy. However, she proves to be more than he anticipated. Can he lead her correctly? Or will she doom them all with her thirst for justice?
This is a really fast paced read. I felt like I was constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next and if it would go the way I thought it would. For the most part, I really liked the characters. What happens needs to happen for the characters to grow into the role that they need to play. There was definitely growing tension between Rowena and Bram by the end of the book. I did feel like it took a while for Bram to be introduced into the storyline, but once he was, he was there mysteriously holding it all together. This was just the beginning, I am looking forward to finding out more of the world and how it all weaves together!

The initial chapters unfold at a somewhat measured pace. The protagonist, Rowena, is introduced as she navigates her daily life, but the narrative gains momentum as tragedy strikes. I find Rowena to be a particularly compelling character, and she feels very authentic. Following an act of unexpected betrayal, she seeks to avenge her family, though the path ahead is fraught with challenges. Nearing the age of eighteen, Rowena has been sheltered by her family and lacks the practical skills necessary for her quest. Despite her determination, she faces a series of betrayals, and trust becomes a scarce commodity. The aspect I appreciate most is the necessity for her to strive and mature rapidly in order to survive. There are no easy solutions to her problems, nor does a savior appear to rescue her.
This book would certainly appeal to readers seeking a fresh narrative and a departure from conventional plots. This book has so much potential. I really liked the side characters, honestly more than Rowena. At first, I really liked the fire and spirit, and how much of a fighter she was. Then, she falls short during the fight scenes. During the competition, I was inclined to brush it off because you can't win EVERY fight. When she had to defend herself from SA, I was rather let down that she wasn't able to fight back at all and had to rely on her unknown magical abilities suddenly making themselves known. Eventually, we find out that her father's soldiers were just humoring her and going light on her training the whole time. At that point, I got really frustrated with Rowena that she still kept believing she could fight and having all the swagger and couldn't back it up, not sticking with the plan, and the feisty spunk was more royal annoyance. I feel like the MC can't get a handle on which personality she wants to be any given moment. The side characters personalities were awesome and I stuck with it more for them. The vengeance storyline falls flat, but other than that, I did enjoy it overall.

I had the pleasure of meeting this author at a book festival recently, and was hooked on this story. She mentioned Vikings and I read the first few lines, and I was in. And the writing never downgraded - it’s written quite well. And there were constant action/battle scenes that were also done well. I think ultimately it was the seemingly lack of direction the story was taking that made me feel a little bored. We got some reveals - and quite a lot of murders - that set up the premise decently, but now it’s been pretty stagnant and I just don’t have the patience to see where it goes, frankly.
Not to mention - and I was told - the romance is slow-burn, low spice. Which is perfectly fine. However, we haven’t even met an inkling of the love interest a third of the way in, and I need a little something with that, especially to establish a yearning slow-burn relationship. Not saying it still couldn’t have been that, but it would’ve been nice to see by now. So, it really does pain me to DNF, especially after the money I spent on this, but I got to be real.

Actually a 4.5 because I am very impressed with how the author is handling the growth of the main character. Very realistic handling of realizing just how poorly prepared and spoiled she is and slowly coming to grips with that in baby's steps. The main character's realistic reaction and aftermath of the trauma so many girls and women deal with at the hands of men. This is not a hate men power to women story however but the story of a girls growth to womanhood and retaining her power and respect equally with men.
Now wrapped around that story is a fantastic book one of an epic fantasy! The main population are elves but rather then typical Celtics mythology we have Roman. " Counties" are ruled wildly differently and yet are seemingly connected by family ties. The end of the book just starts to give us glimpses of the wider world and who inhabits it. This book grabbed me from the get go and I would have finished in a day but you know , grandkids, lol. Nice job . I will be reading book two .

This is the first book in this series which I enjoyed reading. I enjoyed this author's creative characters and plot. This is a well written fantasy story that is engaging and hard to put down. A story of magic, loyalty and even some romance added to it. Princess Rowena has been through so much and has lost everything but now she is ready to make those who hurt her pay. In the process she must decide who she truly is. When a fae warrior comes into her life things are about to change and he brings secrets with him. What happens next in this story is something you do not want to miss. I enjoyed all the characters in this story. Rowena is a great strong character who is connectable and I found myself pulling for her to come out okay. I also enjoyed how supportive the other characters were which was great to see. I enjoyed watching their growth throughout which made the story easy to read. This is a fast paced story with a great entertainment value. I look forward to seeing what is next in this series. I highly recommend this book.

This is the first book in the Enchanted Shadows Series. It is a fantasy adventure filled with danger, loss, the need for vengeance, traitors and so much more. I love a story that captivates me and keeps me turning pages and this book definitely does that as it is full of twists and turns and keeps me guessing about what will happen next.
Rowena is a princess and unfortunately not a powerful one unlike her mother. As it stands she has no magical powers so she has trained to fight. When a betrayal leaves her mother and father dead Rowena escapes. Now all she wants is revenge against the people who killed her parents and betrayed her family and their people.
That is until she meets someone who demands she give up on revenge and follow her destiny. Does she listen to this handsome stranger? The power is in her hands. Will she choose to destroy her enemies and risk her people or follow her destiny?
This was a great first book and I look forward to reading more.

When a betrayal leaves her mother and father dead Rowena escapes. Now all she wants is revenge against the people who killed her parents and betrayed her family and their people.
That is until she meets someone who demands she give up on revenge and follow her destiny. Does she listen to this handsome stranger? The power is in her hands. Will she choose to destroy her enemies and risk her people or follow her destiny?
This was a great first book and I look forward to reading more.

Rune of Secrets (An epic fantasy adventure): Enchanted Shadows Book 1 by Kelly N. Jane. This is the first book in the Enchanted Shadows series and it was so good. I can't wait for the 2nd book. Its the story of Rowena who has lived a great life but it has all been turned upside down. When tragedy strikes she is left wondering what to do. Does she try to get revenge or move on and save her people. She has just found out that she has powers she wasn't aware of and is learning how to use them. Bram is sent to find Rowena and help her find the path to fulfill her prophecy. She is not so easy to lead though and he's finding her very hard to deal with. Rowena has to fight battle after battle and she soon realizes that her father's men went easy on her because she's not as good as she thought. Rowena is spunky, smart, hard headed and full of herself at times but she ends up learning things about herself. This is a fast paced read that will keep you flipping pages late in the night.

This book took me by surprise in the best way! I didn’t know what to expect, but once I met Princess Rowena who is grieving, cursed, and still standing strong, I was hooked. This story isn’t just about magic and kingdoms falling either. It’s about resilience and reclaiming power in a world that keeps trying to silence you. The world-building is lush and layered without being overwhelming, and I loved how the magic actually came with real consequences. Rowena’s journey is emotional and fierce, and her anger and grief felt so grounded and real. The mysterious warrior adds just the right amount of tension and intrigue, without overshadowing her growth. There’s political drama, slow-burning intensity, and a sense of legacy that gives the whole story extra weight. If you're into stories where the heroine earns every inch of her strength, this one’s for you. I can’t wait for the next book, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this author going forward!

Rune of Secrets pulled me in from the first chapter and didn’t let go. With a strong, complex heroine and a world laced with danger, secrets, and forbidden magic, this story hit all my fantasy notes. The emotional tension? Real. The slow burn? Definitely there! And the stakes? Sky-high.
What I loved most was how layered the plot was—nothing felt predictable, and every reveal had weight. Kelly N. Jane has a way of making you question everyone’s motives (Are we falling little in love with some morally gray characters along the way?). There’s magic, betrayal, and a haunting sense that something bigger is always lurking just beneath the surface.
Can’t wait to dive into the next one—I need answers, and maybe a few more scenes with that certain someone 👀.

What an eye catching story! I was pulled in from the beginning and not let go! This has a lot of action, suspense and definitely drama. The story is well built and the characters are complex with secrets hidden throughout. The author did a great job with the descriptions as I could easily picture them in my head. From the forest to the town and even the clothes and food it was well done. Not over the top in your face descriptions but just enough to be subtle. The characters are plentiful! We are introduced to many different types and the author did a good job building each person. Some are fleeting and other are around for the long haul but I had feelings about each one.
Although this quest has ended the story does continue in the next book. I am looking forward to grabbing it.

This was a fantasy filled with magic, fae, great world building, suspense, mystery, and fun characters. Rowena is a strong and independent princess who has been training as a warrior to travel with her father. When her kingdom is attacked and her loved ones killed she is taken by her uncle and betrothed to a prince. She learns that she was not trained as well as she thought because all of her plans seem to end in her getting caught. Rowena has a hard time trusting other people but needs help to try and get her kingdom back and clear her name. I liked how Bram, a traveler, seems to keep showing up and trying to help her. We learn about magic, about her being moon born and a prophecy, and we are walked through a great story! Can’t wait for the next book!

I love a badass, no nonsense, fights her own battle FMC. That is exactly what I got with this book. This was my first book with Kelly, and color me impressed. Rowena is the only survivor out of her family. The rest have been murdered and Rowena is cursed to not be able to access her powers. Stripped to basically human, Rowen shows time and time again that you don't need powers to be a strong leader. Driven by her vengeance to bring her families murder to justice, she faces a difficult decision. To lead her people, or leave them behind to go after her enemies? I cant wait to read book 2 and see where Rowena's journey takes her!

I loved the sound of this book when I read the description and was excited to see what it had to hold when I started reading. What I found was an interesting book that focus on grit and determination rather than the quick fixes the main characters normally come across. The FMC had a lot to overcome if she wanted to take her revenge.
Overall, I thought this was a good start to a new series. For me the plot was better than the characters. At times I did find the FMC to be a little bit irritating, although that did add to her being realistic. It feels like this book was building up to what else is to come in the next book and I am looking forward to reading it.

This book had me hooked from the get-go and I couldn’t get enough of it. This fantasy story has it all from adventure, mystery, secrets, betrayal, revenge, curses, danger, and so much more that it was hard to put this book down. I found the FMC, Rowena was relatable in ways that she too has gone thou things like trauma, loss of family, and becoming strong willed as the book progresses. This book was also a strong vibe of Vikings, warriors, shield-maiden, magic, fae and gods which gave it a great vibe, and a world that made you feel like you were being pulled along with them. I cant wait to read book 2!

This was incredible! A well written epic fantasy that just grabs you from the get go! The world building is amazing, the storyline is exciting, entertaining and full of action and magic. The characters are strong, intriguing and well developed and their adventure is one hell of a rollercoaster. Fast paced and filled with suspense, mystery, curses, magic and death, I found that I could not put this down. Twists and turns and surprises as the plot thickened, This is off to an amazing start and I am anxious to read more.

Pretty sweet fantasy here. My heart goes out to the princess Rowena . To see the upheaval her life has become from selfish people. The amount of lose she had to deal with even made into a slave of sorts. While figuring out her revenge she meets up with pirates looking for an object that belongs to her. She gets help from bram and still at the end of everything she again gets things taken away. I loved the world building in this book and all the description. I would love and can’t wait what adventures come about for Rowena in the next book.

I enjoyed this book and will continue reading the series and other books by the author. I did get annoyed with the main character but then I reluctantly thought about it and decided that some people would probably react in the same manner. No matter how helpful someone may be someone telling you what to do constantly will pissed you off especially after what she went through. The side characters are amazing and I am really curious about where their path will lead. Some I hope get a happily ever after and some I hope get tossed off a cliff.
