A Mirror of Truth

Rate this book
A Mirror of Truth: A Treatise for the instruction and comfort of the just and for the conversion of the unsaved. By John Holdeman, Elder and Founder of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. A doctrinal exposition on Christian principles as taught in the Bible. These articles are richly permeated with Scripture quotations; truth is so clearly portrayed that it can be likened to looking into a mirror to differentiate between true and false teaching. An important book which will help the reader understand the true doctrines of the Bible. A Translation of the German work Ein Spiegel der Wahrheit 1878. 587 pages; hardcover; Gospel Publishers.

I've had root canals that were easier to read than this book. I am not saying that the contents of this book are all bad but that Holdeman needed an editor--badly. He reiterates points many times over often quoting the same verses over and over again in consecutive paragraphs. Speaking of paragraphs--a chapter needs more than 1! I my goodness some of this paragraphs are four pages long!
The good in this book is that it clearly shows the author was a very intelligent person who used his mind for raw thought. He displays his sources throughout which many were contemporary and I enjoyed the historical aspect of that. He quotes Bible verses every where and many times he will just word vomit entire paragraphs of nothing but Bible verses for one to judge his conclusions.
There were at least two whole chapters where I wanted to go back in time and sternly tell him he was not only wrong but wrong headed because I believe that in all of his discernment of the Bible there were pieces of it he got all wrong.
Anyway, I wanted to do a review of this book because I haven't seen anyone else do one. It's a tough read in my opinion but there are some nuggets I think you could walk away with.
