Zaiyren. Maia. They’re from two different worlds, but only one of them knows that.
He’s different. Beautiful. Dangerous. But Maia sees past the beauty and connects with his pain.
Real terror stands between their chance at making it work, and it could mean only one of them makes it out alive. And although she’s willing to protect him, he’ll do anything to protect her—even if he has to tear the world apart.
The book is interesting and I kept waiting for more but this one got a bit boring after a while. It was repetitive and I couldn't understand the Fos and Falry situation. Was Falry dead or not? If yes, then who or what is impersonating him and why don't their people know about it? What does it mean and what are the implications of it's not Falry? What could happen and what is happening to Zairyen as the foe pulls the Vin from him? Zairyen gets sick but then recovers over and over but no one, even elders seem to know what's going on.
Besides that, the beginning of the book points to a large sacrifice to defeat the being destroying the world of the Estians, then goes into how the people intentionally chose to try to forget over the generations and erase his name from memory. Sounded like folly to me and doesn't seem to have worked but no reason why. There's a hint about a prophecy or something having to do with Zairyen but nothing really connects to make sense at least right now. As for Maria, she seems to be doing nothing really. No job, no responsibilities, no anything at least for now. She's living with her ailing grandmother after quitting her job but that's about it. Not sure what's up with the being wanting Maia and Zairyen together but guess the next book will tell. Although Maia and Zairyen are building something together, I found that I wasn't that invested in their relationship and we went from it's dangerous for them to have sex (murky reason as to why) to them having sex given Zairyen's failing health.
When down on her luck Maia meets Zaiyren she’s both weary and drawn to him at the same time. As she learns more about who he is their relationship blossoms. Little do they know something evil is lurking and plotting in the shadows.
I liked this story. I like the H and h a lot. They both had easy personalities and were very sweet people. Fos was disappointing, I understand his shock and grief of his brother but even he knew something wasn’t quite right. That Falry is evil I can feel it. This will blow up in Fos’s face.
This book does end on a cliffhanger. I felt that although the story was interesting not that much truly happened just a lot of things in the background and set up. Hopefully that means we will hit the ground running in the next book.
What excellent timing. I have always loved reading books by Emery C.F. Bryant! Her books are always so well thought out with amazing characters who tug at your heart. When I saw this book as an advanced reader copy, I jumped at the chance to read it. Defeated by life, Maia Jeffries has returned to her grandmother’s home to regroup. She spends much of her time job hunting or thinking. One day she spies a figure at the edge of the property and investigates. Maia is wary when she encounters Zaiyren, it is as if he appeared out of thin air. They gradually become close but there is more to Zaiyren than meets the eye and forces close to him are trying to destroy him. I am so happy that I will be able to immediately read the next book in the series. Timing is everything!!! Awesomeness.

Such an interesting story, the concept is fascinating. The storyline is very engaging right from the first chapter, learning more about Zaiyren was so much fun. He's quite a remarkable character, his background is full of mystery and leaves many questions. Things unravel gradually, which flows at a natural pace. Maia, our main female is a tragic but loveable character. She's had an unfortunately difficult life, but tries to make the most of things as best as she can. She is vulnerable at the start, but tries hard to hide it. Folfos is an interesting character, he's close to Zaiyren, like a brother. I can't wait for book two, this was such a fun and exciting book. There was a great many parts about this that fascinated me, the author did a great job of making a unique story that is well balanced.
So, I’m Not very familiar with the author’s other work but if this is an indication I have read her work twice. (My first and last time) The beginning of the story held promise. I kept waiting for the good part. Maybe she is doing it to build up intrigue but all it did was bore me. Nothing good happens in the story enough to make care about what happens in the second part. Towards the end I stopped reading and would just skim hoping to reach something good. Waiting for something to grab my attention, it never came. Both the characters were boring, them together was boring. At the end I was just bored. It wasn’t for me don’t care to find out what happens next. And I don’t mind cliffhangers. This one is a huge No for me.
Amethyst is strong on aliens and weak on romance. Zai and Maia relationship is the weakest part the book. The two share a few short scenesthat somehow leads to them falling in love. Maia learns Zai is an alien, but that's all she really learn about him, and he doesn't learn anything significant about her. Their relationship has zero depth because Bryant didn't show Any moments of them getting to know each other on a deeper level. When Fos asked Zai to tell him about Maia, Zai shows him an image her because he doesn't Know her. I thought Zai and Fos's relationship was more interesting then his and Maia.
I gave this three stars because of the sci-fi elements and the mystery surrounding Zai.
This book has a way of drawing you in and gripping you tight. I found myself saying I'll just read one more chapter desperate for answers until I got to the end and now anxiously awaiting book 2. I loved the slow burn of the relationship between Zaiyren and Maia. A must read! Book 2 can't come soon enough. Another great book by Emery C.F Bryant
I’m one who is for all the drama, but man, when you drag it out, it feel as if the main story line is starting to become buried under a bunch of word. I was hoping the author in this book would help some of these other characters catch on quicker that something is not right, but it never fails that they don’t. I guess without it, there would be no such thing as drama…I high suspect I will not be reading the second book.
I found this to be a dark book and could not finish it. I found the prologue to be disturbing and started not to read any further. I only made it half way through the book. It started reading as if it was a horror and I don’t do horror. I like how Amethyst and Maia romance progressed but I can see something awful coming and I want my HEA.
This story really drew me in and left me asking for more! I want to know so much more. Maia and Zaiyren are the best and I really can't wait to get to the next book so I can find out who Kraautar really want and how he ended up in his prison. I have developed very hard feelings for the gemnots Falfos and Falry. I just need more!
I'm curious to know a few things. Like what is he? Why does Falry seem to hate him? What happened between him and Falry? Why is Falry able to get into Fos head, and not the other way around? This book is weird but interesting enough. I hope that part 2 will clarify some stuff, because right now I'm lost.
This was my first book by this author, I usually don't read sci-fi but decided to give it a try. I did enjoy the storyline and the main two characters, I can't wait to find out what happens next.
This book had a lot of promise but for me it just didn't fulfill that. It's a bit slow and stops with no conclusion so you have to buy the next book in the series. That's annoying.
