Are you ready to change your studying experience for the better?
I'm currently a 17 year old student looking for study tips. This one sounded good so I preordered it given that I've found similar books useful in the past. I'm afraid to say I did not like this one at all.
Firstly, it's not written well. There is a grammar error on page one, and from there the sentence structure and overall writing is not good.
Secondly, the tone is also terrible. This author writes like she's the authority on everything and it all feels rather pretentious. It feels as though she's looking down on everyone else, including one section where she is clearly looking down on those she went to school with.
Thirdly, this isn't Jades fault, but it's amazing how much the exam system has moved on in the little time she's left school. This is a shame of course, but the publishers should have had people on hand to be more up to date and change things around where necessary.
The author does say some things I agree with, but overall this information isn't well written or enjoyable to read. Check out her A-Level YouTube videos instead for something that feels more down to earth and interesting. I'm sad I can't recommend this, I tore through it when I got it but I was enjoying it less and less by the page.
I have the incredible honor to know Jade in person as a classmate in uni. The fact that one of us students wrote a book is really crazy, and I am proud and inspired beyond words.
She did not just write this book during a busy school year, in which I was struggling to finish the normal workload of assignments, but on top of that, she wrote an incredibly useful book. She said it herself: It is a book she wished she had when she was in high school. And although I did not go to a UK high school and I had a very different focus during that time of my life, I think younger-Pia would have liked this book a lot!
From reading it, I learned many valuable study techniques and advice on how to thrive in a school setting. If I had read it as a teenager, it might have prevented me from dropping out and might have inspired me to give school another chance. Jade does not downplay the problems of the school system, but turns them into fun challenges. She highlights both disadvantages and advantages and motivates you to tackle them with the tools of the book. After each chapter, I was inspired to start doing. Her advice sees a person as a full human being, Jade knows we are not machines, and she describes techniques that are realistic and actually work.
Jade combines science based insights into learning with her own experiences and advice from other people. While she always puts a focus on mental health and individual differences. The book ends up feeling holistic and a complete study guide complete, which does the title justice. I find it easy and fun to read and finished it in two evening sittings.
Thank you, Jade, for sharing all your knowledge with the world. Thank you for being vulnerable and pouring your heart in your book. Thank you for your hard work!
One thing that has been on my mind while reading this book, and that might be fair to mention: I am definitely biased. Sometimes I felt her write like a true Minervan (I saw some HC applications!) and at this point I can't say anymore if that is good or bad :)
Wasted a few hours reading this book. V poorly written. Confusing and distasteful. It’s not really about study, it felt like a v privileged, out of touch take with somebody who has a weak connection with the current education system. Felt pretentious and condescending. Disappointing as she marketed it so highly.
If I’m honest, I had bad expectations for this book. As a student going into sixth form, I thought I’d pick it up as the premise sounded good, but I’m naturally sceptical of YouTuber authors (just an observed trend of ghost writers and poor writing). I was surprised to find this one of the most impactful books of my year.
Far from boring, it is clear that the author took time to research the subjects discussed and to put them in an approachable light. The narrative around mental health was refreshing, especially in the “toxic productivity” space. I’ve read reviews stating that she is too privileged to do justice to mental health, but I found that her writing was attentive to students in all walks of life, such as citing familial circumstances as a reason why school may not be a priority. She shared her experience in a way that will definitely help those who are struggling with school/stress balance. The metaphor used in the mental health chapter was one which will stick with me and help for sure.
This book put into words thoughts I didn’t even know I had about school/grades/exams and not only made me feel motivated, but seen.
The SAAD pneumonic and “put it in practice” study tips were very helpful and, dare I say it, I’m excited to try them out during A Levels next year.
I recommend this book for all students in secondary school. Don’t expect a step-by-step guide (which tbh would be boring), but a deeper look at learning, stress and how to tackle school more productively. Well worth a read and without a doubt changed the way I will approach school.
I actually didn’t think I’d feel so seen by a study guide 😂
Sure, some of it’s a little (I don’t wanna say cringe bc cringe culture is dead but for lack of a better word let’s just go with it) but it’s hard to write a motivational book without being a bit ~cringe~
GCSEs were a weird time for me (covid & all that) so I felt like I lacked experience going into A levels (definitely hit with a lil’ imposter syndrome) this helped me sort my life out a bit & I’m currently trying to implement a couple better habits (a little at a time of course!) But the most helpful was the revision technique part & yes, I have picked up experimenting with flashcards even though I’ve loathed them all throughout my school career - digital ones are working best for me as it’s little commitment to make & I can pick them up on the go :)
I was worried I might disengage with this since I’m on a very busy schedule at the mo’ & a non fiction is not exactly the perfect picture of an inviting sanctuary read but nope I’ve stayed very committed AND I even did the interactive activities so won’t you look at that! No, but I actually really enjoyed using them as little journal prompts & it definitely helped me think about what was broken in my routine & how to implement change.
I think a very timely read for all the children who’ve fallen down the covid cracks & are being expected to carry on as normal despite having little to no knowledge & experience on how to sit ACTUAL EXAMS.
(My only complaint is that I do think this book is heavily targeted at ‘high achievers’ - it does try to be inclusive by mentioning that success is what you define as good grades but with the only reference points in the book people that got A/A* 8/9 it would probably be quite intimidating? Now a couple caveats: this is from Jade’s POV & is basically autobiographical in a sense & we really have to stop requiring memoirs etc to represent everyone (that’s not the point??) & of course target demographic (aka: the people that watch Jade’s channel & are ready to invest time into reading a study guide) are more likely to be high achievers but it’s an interesting point to think about.)
Wow, this book surpassed all expectations! 👏🤯 I bought this to help with my studies after seeing it advertised on Amazon and I thought I might come away with the odd study tip, or knowing how to make a timetable.
Instead, I got that and 10X more!! I got an in-depth overview of some of the best study techniques I wish I’d known years ago AND a framework called SAAD to help rate the effectiveness of all my future study activity. My entire mindset towards education and exams has shifted. The passages about the school system, perfectionism and why we’re scared to fail really made me reflect on my learning and see it in a more positive, less stressful way.
One of the best books I’ve read this year, if not in my whole school career. Just get it. It’ll change your life. 🥳
Speachless. You opened my eyes to so much knowledge I hadn't heard, and this feels strange to say considering I have been following Jade, Ruby, Holly and Vee for so long. A must read😍
I have been following Jade since she was a small YouTuber, it's incredible to see her development! As a huge book-worm, I was immensely excited to see her publishing a book, and it's a self-help study guide book! I swallowed this book in one day. I think it's the best time for me to read it. Furthermore, I am writing my A-Level exams next January and I have lots of uncertainty and fear. This book it not only a study-guide, but more like a book with study advices +life advices+ future advices+ motivation boosts. I thought it was perfect for me and this sequence of my life. I want to say : Thank you, Jade! You really made studying more fun and I love how passioned you are about learning and being yourself ^^ I think I am ready to smash the exams next year :) Keep it up! <3
I love learning and try to improve my techniques. There are many Youtube channels on this but; I was following Ali Abdaal for long time. I came to know about Jade after she was invited for one of his deep dive episodes.
After hearing that episode, I resonated a lot with her views on learning. I got excited when I knew she was releasing a book. This book has not just tips on learning but covers entire process of learning from planning for exams till the mind set for approaching them. I was quite familiar with the most techniques mentioned. However what impressed me the most in the book was how we need to look at exams and the process of learning.
I feel that this book can be encouraged to be read from the school level. This is because we start learning mostly from school. Most of this book is generally explained around the UK educational system. However the principles and tips mentioned are universal. The tone of this book is intimate and it feels like you are speaking to someone close. Thus never feeling like an advice.
Once you have structure to learning process it becomes more effective and this book is a great start for building it. This book changed my perspective towards the exams. You will fall in love with the learning after you read this book.
Incredible! Perfectly written, really engaging and not boring at all. A fun and interesting way to learn of new revision tips and techniques. Highly recommend to all students, especially those doing their GCSE’s, A Levels and BTEC’s.
I purchased this book a while ago but never got around to reading it until recently, and I'm not sure if the title does the concept any justice because "the only" is a strong term to use, especially when there are so many useful videos and alternatives available for free. My expectations were high given the hefty price tag, and to be frank, the content is adequate but I can't say that the material is outstanding. I'm not criticising Jade because this book is a good quality read for goal-oriented people in need of a motivational pep talk because it's written and executed in an optimistic philosophical manner that positively rubs off on the reader, however I can't help but be slightly disappointed because there is one missing element, and I believe that while some sections seem adequate and definitive, other details are impractical. Jade has also over-explained and less was simply enlightening. in other words, this book does not cultivate balance. I adore Jade, but I get the impression that she is just one of many influencers who exploit their status while pretending to be humble about their intentions, which is a shame because she has tried to persuade her audience that it isn't about the earnings but rather the sale number target, well, If that's the case, why is Jade frantically promoting her book on social media? In conclusion, Unfortunately, and realistically, Your grades or commitment to your studies will not instantly improve as a result of reading this book. This is entirely dependent on your own willpower and preparation. This book, in my opinion, is a waste of time because it will not teach you any new techniques. I'm afraid the content is less unpractical, minimal and would be better off seeking advice elsewhere.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It goes without saying that this book has a certain target audience. Students or people willing to learn and put their time in studying something. If you are any of the above or anywhere near, this is an exceptional read.
Jade Bowler does a tremendous job of breaking down methods and tricks on how one can go about improving their ability to dissect and study a subject. I was overjoyed to see that the mindset that I had developed over the years regarding studies was exactly what Jade highlights in some chapters.
The book has techniques you can use to memorize things better, optimize your time and study schedule, not to mention a lot of pointers on how you can improve your future goals and such.
This is a book I wish I'd read when I was a student, and a book I'd recommend to any and every student who is willing to put in the time and effort to maximize their learning potential.
I've learned a lot from Jade and I'll be putting a lot of her advice to use. Highly recommended
I enjoyed this book overall. It was informative and interesting. I've watched Jade on YouTube for a few years and I was excited about her publishing a book and I was pleasantly surprised by it. I think this book really shone through in chapters 3 and 4 about how we learn and revision methods. These were by fast the most information packed and helpful chapters. I will be using everything I learnt from them in my own revision. However, I think the rest of the book was a bit wish-washy and not as packed with information as I would have liked. There were also many grammatical errors within the book which were uncomfortable to read. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking for really great advice about the most productive way to revise but not sure all the chapters are necessary.
Okay Jade so I have to use this review to generally say if you think that I’ve been wanting to say for a forever so really hope you see this and if you don’t then maybe this could be an inspiration to read the book for somebody else because this book was amazing I followed Jade’s YouTube channel for a long long time and I personally have some routines to even Have something to do with her for example I have one video which I watch before every single exam I write and it has helped me a lot and generally her account was just amazing she taught me so much about living a life apart from just studying and this book made me so much closer to her because it talks a lot about her experience as a student as well especially some chapters as them the future you’re working towards chapter and also the one who deals with mental health and I think this book is just generally such an amazing book and such an amazing study guide because it really does talk about everything and I definitely will learn a lot of things while reading this it did take me long to eat as I know I only paid the same starting and finishing date but trust me it took me longer to read because I kind of challenged myself to only read one chapter every single day so that I can really remember everything I read and so that I can really focus on what I’m reading right now and now having finished this I just feel like I have to show my love for the spy kids there’s a reason why I gave this book 5 stars because the spoke was just amazing and I love it so much and it help me so much and eight think it will help me in my future even more every single time and I felt stressed while studying I picked up this boat and I was like okay million gonna give myself the time that’s gonna take to read this chapter and now having finished it I don’t know what to do and I really hope there’s gonna be a second book and I know they’re probably not be one but I really just genuinely appreciate jades work
Okay, where do I start? I bought this book because I follow Jade on youtube and was curious about the book. I also was looking for tips on how to not fail my tests. And yea you heard me right to not fail my tests, I just had a test week at school and it didn't go as planned.
When I bought the book I was very exited. I just started to plan my homework and assignments and stuff with notion. You see I was really trying to do better. And this book was going to help me further.
At first I didn't understand what she was talking about because I am not from England myself and I didn't know what the hell GCSE was but when I googled it I saw that it were exams. When I got to chapter 3 and 4 I got real excited because there they were: THE TIPS! I needed those tips and I think they will come in handy.
The end of the book was a little bit slow and a little harder to get through, but I still learned things from it.
I gave it 4 stars because I found it educational but some things didn't really feel relevant.
As always this was a self-help book which gave the excitement. Which self-help book didn't? A self-help book is written to make you feel good. And that's the reason, most of the self-help books have the same words, maybe just a different scenario and subject.
Still, most of the self-help books did indeed help me. And surely the writer of this book was being realistic. That's why I am gonna give it 5 stars if good things happen in the future!
The two quotes from this book I liked the most: 1. "Sometimes you only realize how irrational your values are when you put them on paper."- Even Mark Manson forgot to mention it in his best-selling book written centered mostly on Human Values. 2. "I realized that life is not just about what you work as or how heavy your paycheque is. I learned that you will never just be defined by your job. Work is a role you play to survive, contribute to the world and hopefully bring fulfillment to your life, but it is not everything."
Note that, these are the quotes that only I liked. Don't judge the entire book only from reading these.
This book is a MUST have 😆 It is so informative but written in a way that feels personal and relatable especially as Jade has dealt with this all first hand 👏💗 It gives brilliant advice about not only HOW to study (with ways in which schools never cover) in a simple and clear way but also how to COPE with exams and mental health during exam season, how to stay MOTIVATED (I was so motivated after reading), how to ORGANISE your time, how to REMEMBER study materials and general USEFUL advice from Jade and the other StudyTubers! 🔥🔥🔥
I followed Jade on YouTube loooong before I bought this book and her advice has always been super helpful and inspiring but this book really puts all the best of her advice in one place 💕
I also love how it's based upon the English education system (finally a school system I understand!!) 🤪but also the advice would be useful to any student anywhere. SO SO SO WORTH IT !!! XX
This book has been an invaluable resource throughout my exam preparation journey!
From its comprehensive study methods and techniques to the insightful advice and personal stories, “The Only Study Guide You'll Ever Need” is like a gold mine. Jade Bowler’s wisdom and clever tricks have been amazing and incredibly useful.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to not just students but anyone eager to discover the joy of learning and adore the process as much as the results.
I found the content so enriching that I couldn’t resist making detailed notes and summaries, ensuring I can effortlessly implement these new learning techniques whenever I’m in need. Jade’s insights are genuinely invaluable, and this book is a must-have for anyone seeking to enhance their learning journey!
This is the best self-help book i have ever read. I already followed Jade in YouTube, as the best studytuber i have ever found. However, when i discovered she had published a book i expected a cliche instruction book by a ghost author. Howeverml, you can tell it was specifically written by her and i felt almost scared at how close to my heart some parts felt. I took notes throughout all the process of reading it cause i highly encourage to take it as an active read and put into practice every single little tip this amazing book has. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys or wants to enjoy reading
nothing you wouldn't find from a few google searches, though.
also, it's very gcse/a-level centred, around the british curriculum in which the author studied, so that might be a bit off-putting for international readers.
