Spurgeon on Persevering Through Trials

Rate this book
When Spurgeon speaks, you’d be wise to listen. The great London preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon had a lot to say during his four decades of ministry at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. And beyond his mighty voice, Spurgeon’s pen churned out countless words of biblical interpretation and Christian wisdom. These words can still encourage us today! Volume 3 of the Spurgeon Speaks series shows you how to stay strong when life is coming at you hard. Spurgeon himself faced trials—physical challenges, harsh criticism, and much more—yet he stayed focused on God’s call for his life. This book will help you do the same. Presented in lovely editions that you’ll be proud to have on your shelf, the Spurgeon Speaks series offers focused readings on topics that were important to the Prince of Preachers. Expertly selected by Jason Allen and updated for twenty-first century readers, this series will be a valued addition to the library of pastors, scholars, and anyone who appreciates the legacy of Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

A very helpful little compilation of some of Spurgeon’s thoughts on trials and sufferings of varying kinds. He addresses various types of trials and their purposes for the Christian. Both sweet and convicting.

“True honor lies in being permitted to bear and suffer side by side with Him of the bloody sweat and of the five open wounds. This is the guerdon of the saints, that they should on earth be decorated with “many a sorrow, many a tear.” They shall walk with their Lord in white, for they are worthy.”

“It is all for good. The trial of your faith is entirely in the hands of God…While he tries us with one hand, He will sustain us with the other. If He gives us bitters, He will give us sweets in full proportion.”

“Our chief end is to glorify God, and if our trials enable us more fully to answer the end of our being, it is well that they should happen unto us.”

Spurgeon on Persevering Through Trials is the second book I’ve read in the Spurgeon Speaks series, and is just as stimulating as the first. (I previously read Resting in the Promises of God.) This book shows you how to hold to your strength when you’re going through hard times.

Prior to reading this series, I didn’t know Spurgeon suffered from physical ailments and depression. I knew very little about him other than he was an admired preacher from the 1800s. But his writings show not only who he was as a man of God, but his desire to show others the source of his strength.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.” (Psalm 28:7)

“May we preach sermons by our faith which shall be better than sermons in words.” pg 27

“Prayer is the soul’s breath, and if it breathes it lives, and, living, it will gather strength again.” pg 75

“Our thorns in the flesh are as nothing when laid side by side with the nails and spear.” pg 78

“He does not put us beyond the reach of the flood but builds us an ark, which we float until the water be ultimately assuaged, and we rest in the Ararat of heaven forever. He gives grace to endure our trials and to sing His praises while we suffer.” pg 143

“Trials teach us what we are. They dig up the soil and let us see what we are made of; they are good for this reason.” pg 144

“Oh Christian! Cleave to your Master in the smoke, hold on to your Lord in the trials, and you shall be refined by your afflictions.” pg 148

Charles Spurgeon has lots of wisdom for us today. Jason Allen has curated some of Spurgeon's sermons and works that specifically deal with persevering through trials. While the language is a bit old fashioned than what we are used to reading, don't give up or you will miss the pearls of wisdom that he shares. For any of you who are "battle weary," I highly recommend the final section, "A Bottle in the Smoke." It will bring alive Psalm 119:83 to you, and might just bring tears to your eyes.

Spurgeon is simply one of the greatest voices in church history. He continues to pastor countless Christians even after all these years

I have no idea where I’d be in my faith without Spuregon’s wisdom. Time and time again he brings me into the truth of Scripture and points me to Jesus and the joy He offers

The book of sermons on trials will encourage and equip believers to walk faithfully with the God who is faithful to us
