When Spurgeon speaks, you’d be wise to listen. The great London preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon had a lot to say during his four decades of ministry at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. And beyond his mighty voice, Spurgeon’s pen churned out countless words of biblical interpretation and Christian wisdom. These words can still encourage us today! Volume 4 of the Spurgeon Speaks series helps you find true rest—not mere relaxation, but the lasting peace that arises only out of confidence in God. Spurgeon points you to the biblical promises that God has made. Those words weren’t just valid for ancient Israelites or a Victorian-era preacher. God’s eternal promises can give you rest today. Presented in lovely editions that you’ll be proud to have on your shelf, the Spurgeon Speaks series offers focused readings on topics that were important to the Prince of Preachers. Expertly selected by Jason Allen and updated for twenty-first century readers, this series will be a valued addition to the library of pastors, scholars, and anyone who appreciates the legacy of Charles Haddon Spurgeon.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
Spurgeon on Resting in the Promises of God is a relatively short book but holds so many precious and powerful truths. The key word that speaks to me while reading this book is found in the title--resting. What wonderful gifts we’ve been given - rest in God’s Word, rest in His promises – and rest in the assurance and peace that only He can give. Only by relying on and trusting in Him (rather than ourselves) can we truly refresh, recover, and rest.
I love how each chapter opens with a Scripture verse or passage and closes with a summary and notable quotes. This is the first book I’ve read in the Spurgeon Speaks series, and I’ve been incredibly inspired and refreshed. I look forward to delving into the other three books.

“That this Book may become your Book from beginning to end, that you may read its precious promises as made to you.”
Spurgeon extracted as much honey as humanly possible from just a few of God’s personal promises to His covenant people… but God’s promises are as numerous as the stars (Ephesians 1:3). How embarrassingly rich Christians are in Jesus Christ! The only downside of this book is how short it is!
