Dando continuidad al orden cronológico, en este segundo volumen se encuentran los últi-mos diez cuentos del autor, escritos de 1849 a 1877. Destacan por su valor narrativo las historias "El pequeño héroe", un relato en primera persona que expone las experiencias y las sensaciones primigenias de un adolescente confundido; "El cocodrilo", una breve ficción donde el autor vuelve a exponer el mal burocrático ruso y por la cual recibió virulentos ataques desde distintos flancos políticos, y "El sueño de un hombre ridículo", historia que revela con gran transparencia las concepciones filosóficas más profundas del autor.

Maravillosa serie de relatos, algunos muy breves, otros más extensos, en los que el genio de Dostoyevski se revela de manera deslumbrante, abordando temas universales como son la vida, la muerte, el amor y la trascendencia del ser humano más allá de la vida terrenal.
