Rate this book
What if Elizabeth Bennet was not really a Bennet? Suspend a bit of reality and read along. In this story Elizabeth is not born Elizabeth Bennet of Longbourn but rather Lysette Fitzwilliam of Glenwood. A crime committed fourteen years before resulted in her disappearance from the Fitzwilliam family and reappearance in the Bennet fami!y.

“There was no way possible that I was going to have a life and not live it.” –John Passaro, 6 Minutes Wrestling With Life

I really enjoy the Not-A-Bennet trope. Several authors have been pretty creative with the family situation where Elizabeth was not actually a Bennet. It has been interesting how wide a scope they have taken Elizabeth’s pedigree. I don’t want to give a lot away but let’s just say when Lady Catherine saw Elizabeth for the first time, she fainted. Yep, that made an impression. Collins was horrified that his cousin had upset his patroness. Little did he know. There were so many secrets at Rosings Park that I was stunned numerous times. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse… they did. Man, this was really creative.

“Memories hit me as if lightning had struck my chest.” –Charlena E. Jackson, Pinwheels and Dandelions

***SPOILER *** Lysette Fitzwilliam was six when her parents Marcus and Lily Fitzwilliam were murdered and she disappeared. Lady Catherine and Marcus were twins and Lily was her best friend. It was natural that Lady Catherine was chosen as their daughter’s Godmother. Lissy’s favorite cousins were Darcy [Wills] 13, Richard [Richie] 14, and Richard’s elder brother Wallace [Walls] 15. Her not-so-favorite cousin, Anne [Evil Annie] was also 15. The boys were always teasing each other about marrying cousins. One day young Darcy overheard de Bourgh trying to garner a betrothal contract between the younger Darcy and his Anne. Young Darcy was incensed and interrupted their conversation declaring he would not marry Anne. He then begged his father to sign a contract with Uncle Marcus betrothing him to Lissy.

“You meet a new person, you go with him and suddenly you get a whole new city… you go down new streets, you see houses you never saw before, pass places you didn’t even know were there. Everything changes.” –Samuel R. Delany, Dhalgren

On that fateful day: Traveling the road between London and Meryton, a young Edward Gardiner, 14-years-ago, found a battered and bruised little girl. He took the terrified child to his brother Bennet’s house, Longbourn. Fanny wanted to keep her. When they asked her name… she said Lissy. They misunderstood and thought she said Lizzy which was a diminutive for Elizabeth. Due to her fears and night terrors, she hardly spoke for the first year she was with them.

We then fast forward to Kent where Elizabeth was visiting her particular friend Charlotte Collins née Lucas. That is where things begin to unfold and the great reveal happened. Expresses were quickly sent to London and Longbourn. In short order, Lord and Lady Matlock arrived and were quickly followed by Uncle Gardiner and Jane. It would be the next day before the arrival of Mr. Bennet from Longbourn. There was a lot of ‘splaining to do. The restoration of a lost relative was amazing to follow. Her intro into society [haute ton], before unknown to her, was fun to watch. However, there were still villains out there that wanted to do harm to our girl.

What I didn’t like: Errors. Lots of errors. The author even admitted to the problem and they weren’t kidding. I also felt like there were too many threads left dangling. Perhaps it was my desire for closure as I like to know what happened with this and that person. Several threads were dropped completely and I have no idea how things turned out. The story had a lot of repetition, was dialogue-heavy, and contained a lot of telling rather than showing. Still, it was a good read and I enjoyed it.

A wonderful, inventive story. Yes, there are many textual errors. However, they don't take away from the enjoyment.
With polishing this could be as well received in the JAFFverse and any other published ones I have read.

I really enjoyed the idea behind this story as I'm a fan of this type of JAFF trope, and obviously I finished reading it. However, by the end, I was done with the never-ending errors. Especially the typos. I usually don't hold that against unpublished JAFF, and even the author owned up to them. But there was a ridiculous number of them when a simple pre-reader or Beta would have helped catch a lot of them. Also, while I loved the plot idea, the way some things were resolved (or not in some cases) had me scratching my head.
