Raquel Blackcastle: teenage sociopath, part time magical girl, full-time self-proclaimed "fashionista extraordinaire", frequent lesbian, amateur sitarist.
Once, Raquel had it all, or at least everything she wanted. Talent in everything from silverwork to the sitar, a wardrobe stocked better than most designer stores, and a gorgeous girl who's bank balance is only matched by her affection - she had it all.
But then, one day, her girlfriend’s millionaire parents confront Raquel over her poor treatment of their daughter. The argument escalates, murderously. Is it the end for the primadonna girl? Not yet, but now a police car is stolen, burning, and there's a body stuffed in the trunk.
Only a step away from getting caught at any time, now Raquel must use her wits, charm, and all the occult power she can muster to not only salvage her reputation, but hide her ever-increasing number of crimes. If she fails, it's more than just her carefully constructed mask of civility on the line. Living as she does, its very life she's risking, and her immortal soul. Can Raquel escape the consequences of her evil, or will the devilry of past and future finally overcome the SOCIOPATH?
Seeing this title around for a while I was hesitant to give it a read at first. But after reading it I can say this is some good writing. There's a distinct persona to each character, some outrageous scenes, idiosyncratic quips and a colorful yet tasteful vocabulary. The "magical girl" aspect of this novel builds in the background and then mostly unveils in the last few chapters. It is in such a way that you are not ready to predict how magic will be used but I was ready to believe when it happened. The story focuses much more on Blackcastle's interpersonal relationships, her mental illness and her crimes in the waking world. I was satisfied with the story not getting bogged down with fantasy. Looking forward to the manga adaptation and eventual seasonal anime.
