Growing up in North West England and in Germany, Anna wrote plays about talking animals, and stories about naughty children, and drew on every available surface. After school, she did an Art Foundation course, then a degree in German Literature & Philosophy at Oxford University. As an adult, I sometimes wonder...why are we telling these stories to children? And why do kids love these stories? Probably, it's my knowledge of the horrors contained in the original stories that gives me this reaction as an adult, because I did enjoy tales like the Arabian Nights when I was growing up. Unfortunately, this isn't my favorite edition of the stories. They lost some of their cultural flavor in adaptation, and the illustrations didn't quite evoke the fantastical setting for me. Take note, each story is bracketed with Scheherazade's plea and the sultan's mercy, which might disturb younger readers. This collection does seem to be geared toward younger readers/read-aloud settings, which puts the child in the place of the sultan and the reader in the place of Scheherazade--a facet of reading the Arabian Nights aloud that I hadn't before considered. It's not a bad collection, just not particularly impressive. I'd hunt for another volume of these stories before looking up this one again.

It was almost like reading the Legend of King Arthur, but within another culture... and other people... it's basically a pg book with many chivalrous characters! Just read it and don't take my word for it.

What a beautiful collection of short stories, we all have heard of at some point in our lives.
The illustrations are GORGEOUS.
Well written and to be enjoyed by young and adult readers likewise.

What I probably enjoyed most about this copy is the brief it gives us in the end about how the collection of "Arabian Nights" or "1001 Nights" came together historically.

Read this edition to my son daily at night. These were my favorite stories as a kid. Alibaba and Aladdin are the best ones, followed by Sindbad the sailor. The illustrations are nice and it has bigger size font so this edition was great.

A wonderful addition to any children's library. The many stories involving love, death, adventure, and mystery are accompanied by wonderful illustrations. For little ones, it may be best to do the look but don't touch approach as paper cuts are possible or damage to the book. The book also includes a chapter about the origins of the stories and some history to go along with it.

A wonderful read for any child, just perhaps from a safe distance.

This was a enjoyable introduction to the stories of Scheherazade that I read with my kids. The little one was delighted by the repeated bit at the end of each story where she tells the sultan she can tell another story tomorrow if he will let her live. The big one was rightly dubious of the ending where Scheherazade falls in love with the sultan that had murdered hundreds of women in his petty rage and forgives him for holding her life over her head for 1,001 nights. Clever girl.

Wspanialosci dodaje fakt, ze dokonczylam je w Marrakeshu🇲🇦 Ciesze sie, ze po nie siegnelam, bo dzieki nim poznalam prawdziwa historie Szeherezady oraz lepiej zrozumialam arabska kulture (souk, islam itp.) Z podkladem w postaci opowiesci marokanskich lokalsow basnie wygladaja zupelnie inaczej! Zastanawia mnie jednak obecna tradycja zaslaniania kobiet, gdyz w oryginale tak to nie wygladalo (patrz np. Taniec brzucha)-do inwestygacji😎

This was possibly the most enjoyable of these Usborne collections that I have read so far. Other than Aladdin these were all new stories to me. My favourite was The Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor. It was a nice introduction to the Arabian Nights stories and a fun collection to read.

Accessible retelling of the Arabian Nights, ideal for a 5+ year old, with charming illustrations. Bit of a shame about the Stockholm Syndrome ending, but that's the story, and there's some good role models for girls along the way.

Read it with my 6 year old daughter and she loved it. She was going through a phase of interest in stories with a dark side, so it worked. Once that interested ended, her interest in this book ended as well.

Literature classic stories retold for a modern audience, told in a winsome manner, the bridge between stories is basically a repetition but that is how the story went, you wonder about the tension of is this story good enough to live for another day?
This one is for younger readers, and has some nice illustrations, but the stories are told well, and it is really for all ages.
A good read.

Bennett and I read this together and it felt like a bit of a chore to get through it. So many stories about gold and jewels, magic and beautiful princesses that were very far-fetched. Bennett did seem to enjoy it, though.

Beautiful pictures and easy to read type. At the end there is an explanation about how the 1001 Arabian Nights came into being. Very interesting. It explains why some of the Sinbad the Sailor adventures sounded somewhat like Oddeseus' adventures.

My kids, aged 6 and 4 loved this book. It had beautiful illustrations, the stories were fun, and the vocabulary was just enough to stretch them while still keeping their interest.
