Torniamo ad Emerson Pass grazie al terzo volume della serie Historical come sempre egregiamente tradotta dalla bravissima Isabella Nanni. La città cresce e nuovi abitanti giungono in quell' angolo remoto del Colorado ormai divenuto florido e sviluppato. Ritroviamo i ragazzi Barnes più maturi la cui presenza ricopre un ruolo rilevante in quella società che si è ormai evoluta divenendo una comunità fiorente ed unita. Il capitolo è incentrato maggiormente sui gemelli soprattutto Theo che dopo anni di studio torna in seno alla famiglia per intraprendere la carriera di medico in quello spaccato di vita per certi versi ancora molto duro. A differenza di Flynn allegro, avventuroso e spensierato, Theo è sempre stato fragile, inquieto e riflessivo. Alcuni eventi traumatici del passato hanno destabilizzato il suo equilibrio emotivo accrescendo la sua particolare sensibilità che nel tempo lo ha reso un uomo umile, buono e tranquillo. Il suo amore per Louisa è sempre stato una costante che lo ha accompagnato fin dalla sua adolescenza e anche se il suo cuore sa che difficilmente sarà ricambiato dallo stesso sentimento forte e persistente non si fa scrupoli a chiedere la sua mano spronato anche da un istinto di protezione e altruismo. Louisa ha vissuto un infanzia atroce, i traumi subiti hanno frastagliato la sua anima rendendola ruvida e fredda. La vita non è stata generosa nei suoi riguardi soprattutto ora che si vede costretta a sposare un uomo senza la certezza dell' amore ma per il bene della sua famiglia adottiva caduta in disgrazia. Nessuno è a conoscenza dei suoi segreti più inquietanti ma sa che Theo è l' unico in grado di guardarla dentro fino ad arrivare a toccare il suo cuore nel modo più intimo e profondo. Un sentimento di conforto e fiducia prende possesso delle loro anime così simili perché entrambe vittime di forti traumi che li hanno segnati dentro. Un romanzo profondo in cui l'autrice argomenta temi crudi, spinosi e difficili narrandoli con stile e sensibilità. Ho amato Theo fin dal primo volume il suo tratto dolce, gentile, generoso ma al contempo psicologicamente complesso ha attirato subito la mia attenzione focalizzandola sull' evoluzione di questo personaggio che si distingue per l' amore e la premura verso i suoi fratelli e che dietro le sue ombre e i suoi modi tranquilli nasconde una grande forza umana che ad ogni capitolo mi ha emozionata e commossa. Anche Louisa l' ho trovata un' ottima protagonista forte e coraggiosa, nasconde segreti disumani, dietro la sua freddezza c' è una voragine di vulnerabilità, insicurezza e fragilità, un' anima profondamente ferita che chiede solo di essere guarita. Sempre molto interessante il contesto storico che vede protagonisti gli anni bui del proibizionismo, il diffondersi del charleston, e la nascita del jazz club. Periodo in cui comincia a trasformarsi e ad emergere la figura femminile che vuole essere moderna ed emancipata. Una serie familiare affascinante che attraversa periodi storici importanti e ne fa suoi usi e costumi rendendo la lettura ad ogni capitolo più accattivante con una narrazione che resta sempre limpida, fluida e molto coinvolgente.

Louisa was adopted by loving parents after her own parent was abusive and made her endure things no child nor person should have to, therefore she believes she can’t be a proper wife.
Theo has had his eyes and heart set on her for years, he believes he “could love away all the demons”.
He needs a wife and she needs stability for herself and her mother .. can this ever turn to love?
This is the third book in this series and I loved catching up with the town and the Barnes family !
My heart was with Theo every page. I read this book in one sitting, I could not put it down!
Tess Thompson… thank you for writing books with such wonderful characters and stories, I can’t wait for the next book in this series !

Finalmente la storia di Theo, fin dal primo romanzo, il mio preferito, ritorna a casa medico, più forte, ma sempre con quella sensibilità che ho amato in lui, cercherà di conquistare il cuore di Louisa, lui sa con certezza che potrà, con il suo amore, guarire le ferite e i traumi della sua infanzia...

Louisa ha vissuto un'infanzia terribile, vittima di un padre che la sfruttava, in tutti i modi, per procurarsi cibo, soldi e alcool. Per fortuna Lord Barnes l'aveva salvata e dopo la morte del padre l'aveva affidata al parroco e a sua moglie che l'hanno cresciuta amorevolmente.
Louisa pensava di essere innamorata di Flynn Barnes e aveva snobbato platealmente il suo gemello Theo, innamorato da sempre di lei.
Ora dopo anni Flynn è sposato con Shannon e Theo sta per tornare a casa dopo aver studiato all'università ed essere diventato medico. Pensa che i suoi sentimenti siano passati ma rivedere Louisa dopo tutti quegli anni riaccende in lui la vecchia fiamma.
Anche Louisa analizza la faccenda e capisce che si trattava solo di una cotta adolescenziale ed inizia a guardare Theo con occhi diversi.
Purtroppo la comunità ha deciso di licenziare il padre di Louisa e così la famiglia si ritrova ancora una volta ad aver bisogno dei Barnes.
I due ragazzi inizieranno a frequentarsi assiduamente ma i parenti di Theo sono preoccupati perchè pensano che Louisa si stia approfittando di Theo.
Ma Theo è molto determinato ad avere finalmente la ragazza dei suoi sogni.
Ho apprezzato molto che l'autrice non abbia raccontato la storia di Flynn (anche se sarà protagonista di una novella) e si sia concentrata sul gemello silenzioso. Theo aveva trovato la madre morta nella neve e da allora si era chiuso in se stesso. Tutti lo ritengono fragile e anche gli orrori vissuti in guerra per seguire il fratello lo hanno segnato molto.
E' finalmente arrivato il momento per Theo di staccarsi dal fratello e di vivere pienamente la propria vita e d'inseguire i suoi sogni. Mi è piaciuta molta la sua evoluzione.
Su Louisa sono perplessa invece. Capisco la sua fragilità dovuti agli orrori vissuti da piccola ma alcuni suoi comportamenti non mi sono proprio piaciuti. Capiscono in pieno la perplessità dei parenti di Theo che non credono fino in fondo ai suoi nuovi sentimenti.
Devo dire che la trama è fuorviante, non accade proprio quello narrato.
Mi è piaciuto ritrovare tutta la banda dei Barnes e sono molto curiosa di leggere il libro su Cymbeline, una ragazza ribelle rinchiusa in un'epoca che le molto stretta. Riuscirà il povero Viktor a conquistarla finalmente?

Non erano i luoghi a fare la differenza. C’erano persone buone e persone cattive. Anche qui a Emerson Pass.
4,5 - Giunta al terzo volume della serie, riesco ormai a destreggiarmi tra le dinamiche della generazione che sta crescendo a Emerson Pass.
In realtà, l'autrice è abile a riprendere le fila e a offrire un breve ripasso dei vari personaggi, per cui questo volume potrebbe anche essere letto da solo; tuttavia consiglio di partire dall'inizio, perché sarebbe un peccato non assistere alla crescita graduale dei figli di Lord Barnes.
Ci siamo lasciati alle spalle la prima guerra mondiale, il ritorno a casa di chi era andato in Europa a combattere, i primi matrimoni.
Se nel precedente volume era stato uno dei gemelli a sposarsi, ora è la volta di Theo, l'altro fratello, quello schivo, riflessivo e forse un po' più segnato dai vari traumi dell'infanzia.
Dopo essersi allontanato dalla cittadina sperduta tra le montagne del Colorado, Theo decide inaspettatamente di farvi ritorno e proprio per divenire uno dei dottori del luogo. Per quanto a volte la vita di paese, così isolata e monotona possa costituire quasi una gabbia invisibile, ci sono troppi legami lasciati a casa. O, forse, è proprio questo luogo a richiamare tutti indietro.
Al paese è rimasta anche Louisa, la bambina che scappava nei boschi e che è stata adottata dal reverendo. Theo se ne era invaghito, ma lei lo aveva respinto, spaventata dall'indole introversa di lui.
Perchè i due continuano a restare troppo simili: entrambi "toccati" da un peso del passato, entrambi con una grande zona grigia dentro, entrambi non sicuri di poter affrontare una relazione, figuriamoci una vita insieme e duratura fondata sull'amore e non sulla mera convenienza.
Grazie a questa coppia, la Thompson approfondisce il tema della modernità che avanza, di queste giovani donne che desiderano studiare e avere una professione propria, in un mondo dove hanno un destino prestabilito, o moglie/madre, senza una vera educazione, oppure lavoratrice ma rinunciando al resto.
Un altro volume molto bello, ricco di sentimenti positivi e di scelte non facili. La trama è come sempre corale, emozionante, con tanti spunti (e coppie) che si profilano per il proseguo.
Siamo in piena epoca del proibizionismo, i giovani sono affamati di libertà, le novità stanno bussando alle porte di questa comunità ristretta e sono curiosa di scoprire come verrà affrontata la sfida.

This book is faith based. Which if fine but not stated clearly. "Uplifting" does not mean faith based, there are many uplifting books that are not faith based.
The description of delivering breech babies is inaccurate for the time. This was a common occurrence up to the 80s and not fraught with the concerns we seen now.
Despite being only the 3rd book in the series you need to have read the other 2 to have any idea of who everyone is and how they connect. Otherwise it becomes too overwhelming and you lose interest in the main story because you're trying to figure out why we were talking to someone 2 pages ago and what they have to do with this.
The main characters relationship was not well developed. I feel like more could have been done to develop their closeness if we didn't have to catch up with every single person in the book and read very vivid descriptions of everyone and everything.
Lots of fluff not a lot of substance in terms of plot and development.

Tess Thompson has brought us back to Emerson Pass in another phenomenal story from the Barnes' family past. I love returning to this series whether it's the historical fiction or contemporary novels...they are just wonderful reads. Ms. Thompson's talent to bring the reader into the settings, emotions and events of the characters is what makes her novels must reads for me.
The Scholar is Theo and Louisa's story. They are two tortured souls from events that happened in their pasts. What will it take to overcome their pain and haunted pasts to heal and find their destiny? Ms. Thompson writes their story filled with emotions that connected me to these characters. She pulled my heart apart from their tormented pasts. Then she gently healed it again as she compassionately reveals Theo's and Louisa's journey to finding their destiny in each other.
This series has me hooked and I can't wait for the next novel to come out! I love to escape into the Emerson Pass world and spend time with the people who live there. The Scholar is Theo and Louisa's story. They are two tortured souls from events that happened in their pasts. What will it take to overcome their pain and haunted pasts to heal and find their destiny? Ms. Thompson writes their story filled with emotions that connected me to these characters. She pulled my heart apart from their tormented pasts. Then she gently healed it again as she compassionately reveals Theo's and Louisa's journey to finding their destiny in each other.
This series has me hooked and I can't wait for the next novel to come out! I love to escape into the Emerson Pass world and spend time with the people who live there. It's a wonderful escape and a wonderful way to spend time in a book! I want to thank Ms. Thompson for the privilege and honor of reading another great book. I loved it! The third book in the Emerson Pass Historical Series grabbed my attention from the first page and has me excitedly awaiting the next book in this amazing series! The sensitive twin, Theo, returns home to Emerson Pass, after graduating medical school. Working with Dr. Neal, Theo believes his life is finally on track until he runs into Louisa Kind. Never quite getting over the pain of finding out that Louisa had a crush on his twin brother Flynn, Theo realizes that was a childhood crush and nothing more, but when Louisa's family gets one shock after another, Theo begins to see things in a different light. Will Louisa see Theo through different eyes or will she break his heart once more? I love reading about the amazing Barnes family! Author Tess Thompson writes with such strength and passion! I cannot wait to see what this magnificent author has in store for her readers next!

I absolutely loved this amazing story.
Meeting and visiting with all those beloved friends again though it's focused on Theo Barnes and Louisa Lind story. Love Theo, he is such a wonderful man grown to learn to understand deeply himself and others, no wonders he became a doctor. I knew Louisa was his soulmate from the beginning and they're meant to be together. Author Tess Thompson never ceases to amaze me by how emotionally gentle touching my heart strings she tells a story with such depths. Even so horribly dark side of the events in characters' past that makes you cringe just reading it but also gives you understanding more than it. Womens' role in society and family then and now.

I would give this book ten stars if I could. The Emerson Pass historical series by Tess Thompson just keeps me turning pages. The Scholar is set in 1924. The children are growing up in a whirlwind of changes in the world and in their beloved Emerson Pass. Theo has just returned from medical school where study took all of his time. He worries about the changes he sees in the town as they affect his sisters. His parents continue to help anyone in need as they always have but even they are becoming more modern in their ideas.
I absolutely recommend this book. It is a wonderful read.

Il terzo libro della serie è ambientato a circa dieci anni dal primo romanzo e ha come protagonisti Theo Barnes e Louisa Kellam, personaggi che abbiamo conosciuto da bambini e che ora ritroviamo alle prese con i problemi dei giovani-adulti.
Il più sensibile dei gemelli Barnes, dopo aver ultimato gli studi universitari, è tornato nella piccola città per svolgere nell’ambulatorio locale la professione di medico.
I sentimenti mai realmente sopiti per la sfortunata Louisa torneranno a farsi sentire prepotenti quando la giovane perderà entrambi i genitori adottivi finendo per restare nuovamente sola. Due anime così sensibili e ferite potrebbero aiutarsi e sollevarsi a vicenda?
Faccio una piccola premessa, aver letto i romanzi precedenti è necessario per poter comprendere al meglio il libro, perché il riferimento ad avvenimenti pregressi è ricorrente.
La scelta di portare avanti serie che riguardano diversi membri di una famiglia è, secondo me, sempre un po’ rischiosa poiché la possibilità di ripetersi e di non riuscire a rendere realmente “indipendenti” i protagonisti di turno è alta.
Tess Thompson ha superato la prova alla grande, riuscendo a mantenere nella narrazione tutte le figure dei romanzi precedenti riservando loro un giusto spazio, ma contemporaneamente facendo di Theo e Louisa protagonisti assoluti e credibili.
Il genere del romanzo fa sicuramente pensare a una lettura d’evasione e spensierata, ma la narrazione non è frivola. Ci troviamo di fronte a personaggi che si portano dietro un passato ingombrante e pesante e ciò, ovviamente, si riflette anche sul loro presente.
Tess Thompson esplora le fragilità dei due tracciando loro un buon approfondimento psicologico, ma senza però spingersi in specificazioni che striderebbero con i canoni del romanzo rosa.
Con la stessa delicatezza la scrittrice tocca argomenti che, ahimè, fanno parte della vita quotidiana come la morte delle persone care e il lutto, ma che spesso nei romanzi rosa vengono accantonati per dar spazio a romanticismo e felicità.
La scelta di inserire temi più grevi dona alla storia un maggiore spessore e invita il lettore a ragionare e riflettere su alcuni argomenti.
I miei più sinceri complimenti vanno fatti anche alla traduttrice, Isabella Nanni, che con un’esposizione di impatto riesce a ricreare ancora una volta quella sensazione di intimità e di calore umano che trasuda dai personaggi di Emerson Pass.
A mio parere le cinque stelline sono ben meritate per questa lettura che, come le precedenti, esalta il concetto di famiglia e accettazione. I personaggi premurosi e gentili sono sempre pronti a scaldare il cuore del lettore che si sente coccolato dall’amabilità e dalla dolcezza del romanzo.

Dearly love the Barnes Family !! This is the story of Theo. He returns from medical school and welcomed back into the Barnes Family and excited to start his career. He finds his friends still in town and all his feelings come back for the broken but lovely Louisa. He wants to be sure of his feeling for her and her for him if they are true . A lot of heartache comes for Louisa and her family but the Barnes are there to help. They such good hearts. Theo and Louisa are still friends but will they become more? Tess Thompson dies this story so we’ll. I’m so excited the Barnes are a big family. All the characters have their own unique personality so I know Tess will tell us each other from their true person. Another winner for Tess Thompson !!!

The Scholar is heartfelt historical fiction, bringing readers to the Colorado mountains in 1924. This is the story of Theo and Louisa—the town’s new doctor and the haunted young woman who once broke his heart—can they somehow overcome past hurts to heal and love each other. I was instantly drawn to both characters, each of whom had suffered so much when they were young, and I wanted so badly foe them to heal and trust and love. This book takes place during a time of great change and opportunity for women, adding a wonderful layer of intrigue. Although part of a series, this novel can be read as a standalone—but I recommend that you read them all, the historical as well as the contemporary.

Theo mi ha incuriosita fin dall'inizio e leggere la sua storia mi è molto piaciuto. Non posso dire lo stesso del personaggio femminile. Louise non mi ha convinta, eppure aveva tutte le carte in regola per diventare una perfetta protagonista femminile, ma ne è uscita non benissimo a mio avviso. La storia però è molto bella e conferma la validità della serie. Ben strutturata, belle le descrizioni e assolutamente ben collegata.

I love going home to Emerson Pass. The Scholar is Theo's story, and it gave me goosebumps. Thompson is a wonderful writer, and her historical fiction is my absolute favorite. Her attention to detail, delightful characters and the gorgeous settings make this series unforgettable.

A bit too clean for me. I felt like there was barely any chemistry between Theo and Louisa only history. I think since I have read the previous books in the series it made it somewhat interesting. Wished more time for the relationship together and not just them alone with their thoughts. Also getting very tired of the ‘yeah let’s just get married because we went on three dates’ deal. It made me want to skip this book and read Cymbeline’s story. Stayed for Theo since he is such a key member of the series. He deserved a better chain of events instead of the dull ones that happened. With Cymbeline and Viktor you are always wanting more moments because of how well they mesh. Also hopefully Viktor and Cymb will bring some heat into the next book. It’s very doubtful with the history of the series… but a girl can dream.

Finalmente, dopo la storia di Quinn e Lord Alexander e quella di Josephine, la figlia maggiore, possiamo conoscere il destino di uno dei gemelli, quello più taciturno e misterioso, Theo. Theo conosce Louisa Keller fin da piccolo. Ne è innamorato da sempre anche se il suo è un sentimento impossibile: la ragazza infatti ama il suo gemello, più solare, brioso, affascinante. Lui, dei due, è quello taciturno, tranquillo, posato. Non mostra emozioni, forse perché le ha dovute controllare fin da piccolo, fin da quando ha visto sua madre scivolare verso la follia più totale. E di quella follia, teme di divenire preda; di quella malattia teme di essere una vittima, di quel mostro nascosto che potrebbe apparire all’improvviso e portarlo via, in un mondo dove non sarebbe più lui, dove non potrebbe più riconoscersi e dove nessuno potrebbe più raggiungerlo.
Quando viene a sapere che Louisa ama suo fratello, non ci resta neanche male, come se si aspettasse di essere sempre il secondo, il rincalzo, quello più debole. Theo è tutto amore e abnegazione, è dedito agli altri e quasi pensa di non meritare un lieto fine; vederlo lottare per raggiungerlo, mano nella mano con quell’anima spezzata che completa la sua, mi ha commosso.
Lo stile dell’autrice è sempre quello semplice ma scorrevole, che abbiamo amato nei volumi precedenti. Insieme ai protagonisti, ritroviamo la famiglia Barnes e gli abitanti della piccola comunità, che sta crescendo. Si intravedono le storie future, quella di Fiona e Cymbeline. Soprattutto quest’ultima mi incuriosisce molto e spero che trovi la sua felicità. Amo queste storie anche corali, in cui ci si affeziona ai personaggi e si desidera conoscere il destino di ognuno. Ovviamente consiglio questo romanzo a tutti quelli che hanno amato i precedenti, a chi adora le storie romantiche, drammatiche ma anche commoventi, le saghe familiari e soprattutto le ambientazioni rurali, pionieristiche, dell’America di inizio Novecento. Attendo trepidante i prossimi volumi!

How her adoptive parents saved her and gave her the love of a good family. How one man made her his. How she managed to learn to love and be loved despite all the trauma she endured at a very young age. This book does need a trigger warning though. It contains child abuse and rape. But it's a sweet story and one that will keep you turning the pages.
This is Theo's story. This is Louisa's story. How they came to be together after a lifetime of being broken. Can they fix each other? Can Theo make Louisa feel whole again. Can they both learn to love and accept love? This book has so much good in it. So much love. It's a historical and a historical romance. A tender story of love and acceptance. Sometimes it takes a lifetime to realize it isn't your fault. That there are mean cruel people in the world who will hurt you. But there are also the ones that will love you up. This book is a very tender story of a love that was always meant to be. A young man and young woman who found each other and just fit. The tender kisses and feelings of that beginning love. It's told in a beautiful way that will keep you rooting for them to hurry up. For them to be together no matter what anyone else says.
The setting in this book is great. The descriptions are done so realistically. The lake the Barnes children swim in. The dance hall below the restaurant. The music, the laughter and the tears. You feel it all. I sure shed a lot of tears reading this one. It hit me right square in the heart. I felt Louisa's pain so deeply. So realistically. I felt for her. I was so happy when she found life. Real happiness. She and Theo both deserve it.

It's told in a beautiful way that will keep you rooting for them to hurry up. For them to be together no matter what anyone else says.
The setting in this book is great. The descriptions are done so realistically. The lake the Barnes children swim in. The dance hall below the restaurant. The music, the laughter and the tears. You feel it all. I sure shed a lot of tears reading this one. It hit me right square in the heart. I felt Louisa's pain so deeply. So realistically. I felt for her. I was so happy when she found life. Real happiness. She and Theo both deserve it.
Thank you Tess Thompson for this wonderful ARC. This is my own true feelings about this book.

No terceiro livro da Série Emerson Pass, temos a história de Theo Barnes, um dos gêmeos.
Ao contrário do seu irmão Theo é mais estudioso, preocupado e sensível. Infelizmente ele também é traumatizado, pois além de ter sido ele quem encontrou o corpo da mãe morta congelada na neve, a guerra também foi uma tortura.
Agora anos depois ele volta a sua cidade natal formado como um médico e acaba descobrindo que sua antiga paixão por Louisa Keller não acabou como ele achava, mas na verdade esta mais firme do que nunca.
Louisa Keller quando criança sofrer abusos terríveis nas mãos de seu pai bêbedo e criminoso, inclusive ser vendida a um abusador de menores.
Graças a família Barnes, ao pastor e sua esposa ela foi resgatada e adotada quando ela tinha nove anos.
Agora como uma jovem mulher sua vida novamente sai dos trilhos e ela mais uma vez precisa contar com a ajuda da família Barnes e ver se supera seus traumas e da uma chance a Theo.
Outra história comovente da Tess Thompson que mexeu com meu coração.
Não foi fácil ler sobre os abusos sofridos por Louisa, mesmos já sabendo um pouco pelo primeiro livro da série.
E Mesmo com todo o cuidado e amor que o pastor Samuel e sua esposa Pamela dedicaram a Louisa, certos traumas não são esquecidos e superados com facilidade.
A principio achei que o casal em si não daria muito certo, pois os dois precisavam de cura, mas acabou funcionando até mesmo pelo fato de ambos entenderem de alguma forma a dimensão da dor do outro.
E de quebra temos um bom vislumbre da vida dos demais membros do Clã Barnes, e dos demais membros da cidade, mencionados nós livros anteriores, foi gratificante!
Agora vou aguardar o próximo livro, já que é a história do personagem da família Barnes que menos me agrada, a rebelde Cymbeline e o fofo do Viktor.

There's just something about Tess Thompson's Emerson Pass Historicals that makes them truly lovable and special. I always look forward to a new one coming out - and I'm not typically a fan of historicals. But when you read each one, you fall in love with the Barnes family all over again, for their kindness, their generosity, and their wisdom.
This installment features Theo, who has held a special place in my heart from the very beginning. He is the more reticent twin who has had a lot of trauma in his young life. He is delicate and sensitive, but at the same time has an amazing inner strength that keeps him going. His understanding of pain and trauma makes him the perfect match for Louisa, who has truly been to hell and back.
I enjoyed seeing Louisa all grown up and thriving in spite of her difficult past when we first met her. She is struggling, though, to find herself and her self worth after her father passes away. You just know that Theo is the one who will help her do it.
Their courtship does feel a little rushed, though they have known each other most of their lives. You just know they can work through their pasts together and thrive.
I enjoyed the Prohibition aspect of this book and seeing how each character feels about it. Cymbaline continues to steal the show. I absolutely adore her and can't wait to see where she goes. We're also starting to get to know Fiona better. And the youngest siblings are absolutely adorable.
This story absolutely leapt off of the pages, making me feel as immersed in their world as if I were also a resident of Emerson Pass. I just loved it.
You can read this as a standalone, but I promise you'll want to read the others.

Louisa è ancora quella bambina in cerca di accettazione che non guarda mai oltre al giorno che sta vivendo.
Questo è il terzo volume della serie storica di Emerson Pass, se in quelle precedenti abbiamo incontrato di più la voglia di famiglia in questo scopriamo la necessità di accettare e di essere accettati.
Da subito ho trovato che il personaggio di Theo ha subito un notevole sviluppo, lo avevamo lascito ancora ragazzino, anche se già la guerra lo aveva cambiato e fatto rinchiudere ancora di più in sé stesso. In questo romanzo vediamo un Theo adulto con la voglia di affermarsi nel suo lavoro ma ancora di più la voglia di avere una sua famiglia.
Inizialmente a chiunque gli chiedesse se i sentimenti che nutriva nei confronti di Louisa fossero spariti lui ha sempre confermato, anche se in realtà, aveva ancora il desiderio di proteggere quella ragazzina ormai divenuta donna.
Louisa, al contrario di Theo, non è riuscita a trovare la sua strada e fino al momento che cambierà, nuovamente, per sempre la sua vita non si accorge di vivere sotto una campana di vetro e anche se grazie ai suoi genitori adottivi ha assaggiato un briciolo di libertà, nella realtà dei fatti non è assolutamente vero.
L’autrice, in questo romanzo è riuscita a farci comprendere nuovamente quanto la famiglia Barnes sia unita e quanto siano inclusivi verso chiunque abbia bisogno di aiuto.
Mi è piaciuto molto anche il rapporto che i fratelli hanno tra di loro, da una parte perché mi ha ricordato quello che ho con i miei fratelli e dall’altra perché è sempre più raro il legame sincero e schietto tra familiari.

When he returns to Emerson Pass after studying at medical school, Flynn is married and Theo’s love for Louisa burns brighter than ever. Louisa feels she’s not worthy of love and marriage. A past that still haunts her, she feels she is too broken. However, after tragedy strikes her family. Louisa finds herself at the Barnes charity and tender, gentle attention of Theo and her heart begins to wonder if love and marriage is possible. Their road to marriage is rocky with obstacles, doubts, and wounds of the past. Can they find a way to heal together and build a life, love and marriage worthy of them both?
I love the Emerson Pass series so far and I think Theo is my favorite Barnes family member. Even from the first book, I eagerly awaited his story and The Scholar does not disappoint. Deeply haunted by his memories of his childhood and the Great War, he comes home from medical school hoping to find his purpose and maybe even love. His ongoing love for Louisa is sweet and endearing. I cheered as she started to see him for the strong and loving man he had become. It is a clean romance with only references to sex and fade to black scenes. Overall, I loved this story. There were sweet, tender moments, heartbreaking moments and moments that tears fell freely. I am looking forward to the rest of the Barnes children’s stories. I highly recommend The Scholar and the Emerson Pass Historical series.

Deeply haunted by his memories of his childhood and the Great War, he comes home from medical school hoping to find his purpose and maybe even love. His ongoing love for Louisa is sweet and endearing. I cheered as she started to see him for the strong and loving man he had become. It is a clean romance with only references to sex and fade to black scenes. Overall, I loved this story. There were sweet, tender moments, heartbreaking moments and moments that tears fell freely. I am looking forward to the rest of the Barnes children’s stories. I highly recommend The Scholar and the Emerson Pass Historical series.

Delightful storytelling, heartwarming characters
I'll admit, Emerson Pass is one of my all-time favorite virtual vacation spots. I have enjoyed all the stories set in this quaint small town, both the historical and the contemporary romances. The Scholar is our third trip back in history, this time set in 1924 as Theo returns from medical school ready to help his community by going into business with the town's overworked doctor.
Theo believes he's over Louisa, the girl he had a crush on but who directed his attention to his twin brother, Flynn. Ah, but the heart knows what it wants, and Louisa is finally ready to face some hard truths about her life and her earlier misdirected affections.
These books always incorporate so much more of the community than just the focused romance. The secondary characters are fully fleshed out, with storylines of their own, resulting in an epic story that gives you a full look at the entire community in that particular moment in time. The author skillfully brings us up to date with all the Barnes siblings, reminding us that this family may be growing by leaps and bounds but they still operate as one cohesive unit.
Despite the tragedies faced along the way, Theo and Louisa have a very sweet, very satisfying HEA. I love each of these new visits to Emerson Pass and look forward to reading the next book asap. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

The Scholar Of Emerson Pass By Tess Thompson
5 stars because 10 is not an option!!!
Sometimes you read a book that you want to praise so much that you find it hard to find the right words. This is that book for me. I will start by saying simply, I loved it. Emerson Pass has worked its way into my heart and I absolutely loved this story.
Theo Barnes has always been a bit more gentle than the other siblings. Traumas from childhood and the war left him a bit troubled. After time away at university, he is home to be the new doctor of Emerson Pass. Louisa Lind, adopted daughter to the pastor has been a part of the Emerson Pass story from book 1. Her story has already been somewhat revealed, but this book brings her life to more light. The trauma she faced as a child comes full circle and the truth is heartwrenching.
Louisa and Theo had a little love interaction earlier as kids that ended in poor Theo being heartbroken when Louisa chose his brother. But times have changed, Theo finds that Louisa is still the girl he wants, and she finds that despite her turning him away earlier, he is just what she needs to progress in life.
This story was a great story of pure love. It was filled with past heartbreaks as well as current ones. It left me sad at times and happy at others. I dont know why this book was the one that did me in, but it did. I loved it from start to finish. Grab the tissues and dig in, chances are you will too.

Unlike his twin brother Flynn, Theo has always been sensitive especially after finding his mother dead. As the two brothers went off to WWII, Theo was deeply touched by the horrors he saw and experienced. After returning home he decided to attend medical school. After four long years he is now a doctor and has returned to Emerson Pass. He meets up with Louisa Lind, a young woman with whom years earlier he was smitten. Only he realized then that she preferred his twin. But now his brother is married to someone else and he finds that his feelings haven’t changed toward Louisa. When her circumstances change drastically, Theo declares his love for her and offers her a marriage of convenience. Louisa has so any questions. Has Theo offered to marry her because he feels sorry for her? Will his family think she is marrying him for his money? What can she offer him? Could he really love her? She must learn to trust her feelings toward Theo and allow herself to love him. But will it be enough for her? Tess Thompson writes an excellent, loving historical romance with the story of Louisa Lind and Theo Barnes and I am glad that the Barnes clan is large with more siblings so we can enjoy so more stories of the Barnes family.
