Building the Circle #2

The Power: A Psychic Paranormal Romance

Rate this book
What does the physical embodiment of rage look like?

He's six-two with light brown hair, blue eyes, and an absolutely ripped body.

He's also a really nice guy; you can't help but like him.

A pediatrician and philanthropist, Adrian Trellis runs his wealthy family's charitable foundation while also treating terminally sick kids. The undisputed most eligible bachelor at his hospital, he is painfully shy and oblivious to flirting.

While trying to evade donation seekers, Adrian meets a little boy sitting on a bench outside a billing office. Thinking the kiddo must be lost, he offers help and makes a new friend. Before he can explain to Aunt Lucy that he runs a charitable organization, Adrian involves himself if a billing dispute.  He manages to get slapped, yelled at, laughed at, and ejected by security in short order.

Lucy Wallace is just trying to make ends meet while caring for her nephew.

But, creeps and weirdos keep trying to use her sick kiddo, Henry, as a means to hit on her.  Why can't they just leave her alone? She has enough on her plate. Lucy lives in a terrible part of Chicago on rent assistance, working in a dead-end job, while trying to find someone to help pay for Henry's cancer treatment.

When Adrian pops up in the billing office, offering help, you'd expect this to be a match made by fate.  But… Lucy thinks Adrian is working a scam. She's not interested in a medical romance with her nephew wrapped up in it.

Plus, Adrian babbles and stutters every time he looks at her.  His brother, Sam, is beyond strange - he answers questions before people ask them, and knows her name before they're introduced.  She's highly skeptical of the whole thing.

William Trellis does not share his brother's shining reputation.

Scary, big, and freakishly strong, Will doesn't mind intimidating people into leaving him alone. He's not shy; he doesn't have anything to say to people that aren't family. He has no interest in looking for love after his departure from the Navy SEALs.

"The Power" - Book 2 of Building the Circle picks up the story of the Trellis family immediately after "The Call" - Book 1 of Building the Circle.

Adrian and Lucy travel an unusual road to love ever-after, fraught with psychic rage incidents, sick kids, more family antics, a strong desire for a puppy, and a severe lack of dinner leftovers. Before it's all said and done, William will share long-held secrets from his time in the Navy SEALs.

Sam and Adrian are not the only Trellis siblings empowered with psychic empath abilities.

Boy, do I have a crush on nice guy/hot doctor Adrian. This man is dealing with a lot of issues, but in his own way is trying to fix the world, whilst desperately trying to do no harm - which is kind of hard given his magic. The man is swamped by rage, and if he makes eye contact with someone and tells them to do something - they just do it.
He loathes himself, loathes the idea of abusing his powers. So he keeps to himself. And because he rarely makes eyes contact everyone thinks he is shy. Sigh - the man needs saving.
Into his life stumbles Lucy and her sick nephew Ree. Lucy has a really bad upbringing and finds it hard to trust so she and Adrian have issues out of the gate.
I did have a problem with Lucy - other than her childhood/back-ground and her love for her nephew - she really doesn't have much personality or an identity. Actually, she is kind of bland after about the tenth chapter.
Also - she has these stalkers - which is mentioned several times - and yet we never see them - what was the point of mentioning them and then not using them????

The magic quotient jumps by a factor of eleven in this book. Suddenly it seems every member of the delightful Trellis family has magic and problems because of it. Yet, the author expects me to believe that none of them suspect each other has magic? Even though they are incredibly close? This aspect jarred me.

This book certainly upped my interest in Sam - his inability to sleep and eat, the violet eyed girl. Am hooked in a major way to discover what happens to him - why the world burns/suffocates - the bar is being set incredibly high here.

We also get another romance with this one - one of the other brothers (I won't spoil it) hooks up with his lady love - their romance rang more true and layered than Adrian and Lucy's - just saying.

I thought Adrian and Lucy's tale was good (but not great) Unfortunately we don't get a resolve in regards to Ree's illness in this book, and it ends rather abruptly on a major cliffhanger. Luckily book 3 is available and it's Sam's turn - I so need to read his story.

Oh - and one more thing - the cover on this book is way too dark and the model appears to be fascinated with his own crotch. If I had come across this book without reading book one, doubt I would have purchased it, there's just something off-putting about this cover.

I liked this book way better than the first book and was ready to 5 star it until the end. Which was not an ending at all. Right smack in the middle of the big finish so nothing is done at all. It’s very lucky that I have KU and was able to immediately get the next book. Years ago indie authors pulled this stuff to get you to buy the next book and I used to get so angry especially if I had to wait up to a year for the next one. I quit reading some authors because of it. But now 2 books in I just want to at least find out how the other book should have ended. I’m not even sure I’ll finish it because I’m not happy about the cliffhanger. So yes, this is my review. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Oops, way past bedtime on this one. I liked it. It felt more William and Adrian than Lucy and Pip, but it was interesting and sweet. I liked that everyone gets an update. Will kinda missed the whole get together story, but given the age, probably right. After Lucy accepted it wasn't a scam, things were pretty smooth sailing on her end. Adrian's part was sad, he felt a bit like the hulk.

The fight was cool, didn't seem deadly. I felt sorry for Luke, Spooky Sam can be a dick sometimes. I liked Ree, he was a sweet kid. A lot more going on psychic wise than the first book. That was some quick escalation. It was sad they were keeping secrets from everyone. Looking forward to the next one.

Mind F@&!

This book messed with my head and still debating on how I feel about it.

Not as good the first but more questions answered. I abhor cliff hangers and this was a doozy but at the same time the cliff was brilliant. The romance was lukewarm but the mystery and suspense was great. The humor continued in the series.

I will be reading all the books in this series but given the mind f@&! this was I’m waiting until they are all released so I only have to get off this roller coaster one more time (read back to back).

Even saying all I’ve said, I would highly recommend this series as it’s a wild adventure.

This was an exciting second part to the series. I would definitely recommend reading book 1 before this one as you won't be able to enjoy it as much without all of the back story. This book brings us the amazing Trellis siblings from book 1. This one focuses on Aiden and Lucy and Lucy's nephew Ree (Henry).

The Trellis siblings are all about to recognize their "powers" and the fact that they all have one and have been hiding it from each other. The family matriarch has also been diagnosed with cancer and together they are all determined to beat it! The reader won't be able to stop reading this once they start! It's an amazing read from start to finish and it will leave the reader with a reading hangover that will take awhile to beat!

If you haven't read this one yet, you need to add it to your TBR list and add it now! It is a must read series!

As expected after reading the first book, I also loved it! It is amazing how direct and caring the characters are. Good plot and engaging characters, you can understand and feel their struggles. Too short, though. I could easily be reading all Trellis family's books even if they were more than 500 pages long. Maybe in the future??? Thanks Maggie.

Wonderful new author

I loved this book. Each book builds on to the next, it is unbelievably addictive. I just gobbled up each book and I am in awe of the author. I read all of the books I could in one fell swoop. I could not put them down. Awesome, she is an author that will be on my must have list. September can not come too soon. Love love love.

Not going to lie I wanted Lucy to get everything good in the world and destroy everyone around her that even looked at her wrong. She deserves all the good things life can bring and Adrian was a good match for her. I know it seems weird considering his rage but I honestly think they compliment one another so well. He was so protective of her. And her nephew so cute! I wanted to hug him the entire time! We got way more powers this book. And I look forward to more.

Book 1 was ok, this book shows a little more PNR elements, but I am put off by the do-gooder vibe gotta do good to save the world BS…MFC and MMC are introduced but really are side events in their own book. The MMC date dim witted females as they cannot be influenced as well as smart women…really WTF….FMC was raised in foster home raped repeatedly, but just lets the MMC into her life and he is annoyed it’s her when she questions why he wants to give her a car and a house just because and wants nothing in return…yeah I would question that as well most women who are actually strong and not needy and users question when things are just given without a payment. I will be adding this series to my DNF never read again list…

Good

WARNING! There’s a pretty huge cliffhanger in this one- like stop short in the middle of the story, so you’ll want book three lined up!

We first met Lucy at the end of book one, when Adrian (the second eldest Trellis son after William and before Jake) runs into her at the hospital. This book picks up right there (after a fascinating prologue), and sweeps everyone right along.
This time, the paranormal element is right up front and centre, only Adrian knows a heck of a lot more than Mattie and Jake did. In fact, Adrian doesn’t know as much as he should, but he at least knows it’s there.
Lucy, on the other hand, is clueless about the paranormal elements. She’s had a pretty tough life though, and is desperately trying to help her adopted nephew, five year old Henry (Ree) who has leukemia.
This being a book about a member of the Trellis family, the Trellises are heavily represented. Sam and his alter-ego Spooky Sam are actually a huge part of this story, but it is Will who steals the show in this book. The eldest brother was fairly quiet in book one, but makes his presence well known in this book, along with his best friend Henessey. Will might be quiet, but he appears to know a heck of a lot more about the Trellis family abilities than almost anyone else, and it takes his strength and cunning to fix so many family issues.
Although this is mainly the love story between Adrian and Lucy, there is a lot of background stuff regarding the family and their abilities… this builds on the previous book and is what leaves us hanging at the end.
It’s safe to say that this is not a standalone book at all, and that despite the focus on a different couple from book one, it absolutely needs to be read in sequence (because honestly, you wouldn’t get half the Mattie/Jake jokes without it!).

If you enjoy your romance heavily tinged with paranormal drama and big family dynamics, then this is a great series to read. There’s plenty of angst and action, lots of rom-com drama, laugh out loud moments, in addition to all the sappy stuff.
A thoroughly entertaining read, and well worth the time to do so.

ADDICTING STORY!

Once again ..... Just like the first book in the series there is much I do not understand in this book but the characters are so compelling and interesting that I keep on reading. I am now reading Sam's book which is the third book in the series and there is more explanations of what is going on in that book so that helps.

This is a most unusual family that will grab your attention and hold you captive. One thing that comes through loud and clear amidst all of the paranormal information is the deep love, support and affection this family has for each other. I adored Adrian.... My heart was so moved for him and his dilemmas..... Lucy and Rees were so wounded and he was so caring and kind to them it was very heartwarming to read about. Will is a fascinating character also and his determination to keep his family and their extended family safe makes him very endearing. Although he is a tough... Take no prisoners type of man... He also has a big heart!

All in all this is a intriguing, riveting, mysterious and addictive book and series that I highly recommend it you want something different and thought provoking to read with lots of love, steam and family closeness! 😇

Basic plot: Pediatrician Adrian seeks to help a woman save her nephew from cancer, while Sam seeks Ada, Will reveals a secret, and the whole family learns a whole lot more about their power.

This book had a whole lot more of the powers in it than the first, and while I'm still a little fuzzy on exactly what the powers mean, the characters don't know what's up either, so I feel a bit better about that. They are certainly interesting, and it's fair to say the series has me hooked. I plan to finish it unless something goes really wrong in one of the next books.

Adrian as a font of Rage was interesting and unexpected. Ree was adorable. Lucy was the character that I had the most trouble with believing, though. A woman living in the worst possible neighborhoods, who had been a runaway and dropout, dealing with the shit she did and growing up the way she had- she seemed way less damaged and way too well-adjusted to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story and seeing her be treated well. I also know people can and do rise above their trauma all the time. It just felt off.

This plot felt a bit more together than the first book. Threads feel like they are coming together. The ending was one heck of a cliffhanger.

This series is amazing

When I was done with the first book in this series, my mind was a little blown and I wasn’t quite sure what I had read lol. I just knew that I loved it. It was identified as a psychic paranormal romance, but that part was very subtle in the first book. It is absolutely not subtle in the second book. The first book was amazing and got me hooked on this family, with just a glimpse into the psychic paranormal part as the groundwork for developing this world was laid. All those little pieces are brought to light in this book, and we learn more and more along the way as the family starts to figure out and share their own pieces. Some big things are going on, and we are brought along for the journey.

The Trellis family is a gifted amazing hilarious family. You will definitely laugh. The POV switches fluidly between various characters along the way giving you better understanding to what is going on. Sometimes that can be annoying in stories, but it works perfectly in this one. I’m totally invested in the story line, and cannot wait to see what happens next.

Oh wow

Book 1 was good and this, this was amazing. I love how the author slowly pulled more of the paranormal aspects out in this book. The characters are still just as interesting and unique and getting more of the brother's povs is nice.
I love Lucy and Adrian arguably way more than Jake and Matty (who I affectionately referred to as idiots in my review of book one).
Now Adrian did have me wanting to knock some sense in him too but thankfully Will sort of did that for me and it was very satisfying to read.
I loved Lucy's personality, the only thing that irritated me was that she didn't seem to like Sam (see below how much I love Sam) but hopefully she'll come to her senses in the next book.
Sam is still my favorite character and I'm so excited to read the next book (I went ahead and read the blurb and saw its his book). Also Hennessy is now a close second and I really hope he gets a book, and Will (ok who am I kidding, I'd read a book on all these characteristics, even the parents).
And that cliffhanger ending superb.

I was lured into the 'Building the Circle' series by Maggie M Lily when I read the first book, 'The Call'. I knew it was a series, I did not know that I would get sucked down the rabbit hole that is the Trellis family. This is not a series where each book is its own story like the cover suggests. You have to start at book 1 and read through book 6 to get the whole story of this amazing and loving family.

'The Call' introduces the majority of the characters and hints at a larger plot-line, but mainly focuses on Matty and Jake. It was a slow burn, coworkers-to-friends-to-lovers romance, not particularly spicy and a slow build for sure. Still, I found it to be deeply entertaining and charming. I laughed at the antics of her best friends, found my heart breaking at their struggles, and loving the characters. And the best part. The series just got better from there.

While each sibling finds their HEA throughout the series, I found myself enraptured with the characters, the plot-line, and how the story unfolded. Each successive book pulled me deeper and deeper, until I was so entrenched in their family's story and struggles, in seeing them flourish and triumph, that the romance aspect of it was just another layer to the plot rather than the purpose of the book.

I would highly recommend giving 'Building the Circle' series a shot. I think you will fall in love with the Trellis family as much as I did. Happy reading! ~Kay

Adored Adrian, but found Lucy, once we understood her background, to be kind of a blank space. She's just there as a foil for Adrian and has little personality of her own. I thought - given the security assigned to her, and all the talk of stalkers - that this story was going to go down a different path.

I liked the rage/getting people to do what he commands thing - really intriguing - though didn't really get how they connected.
We get a lot more information on Will and Hennessy in this tale. And I found myself liking the idea of Will's story more than I enjoyed Adrian & Lucy's road to romance. Perhaps because Pip seemed to have so much personality.

Sam's powers continue to intrigue me. And compared to book 1, where not that much happens magic wise, this books revs up another gear or two.

There was information imparted in this book that really could have been cut or was kind of repetitive. And there was even more information that the author either hints/teases at, but doesn't explain, or does explain but in such a convoluted way that it lost me. Still, am loving the brothers/family and really want to discover what is up with Sam.

drives me crazy in a good way and bad way

Action begins heating up and the paranormal world is starting to be explained in the second book of the series.

Dr. Adrian is fighting in an intense internal struggle. But that doesn’t keep him from helping anyone he can. So when he meets a little boy, who’s in trouble and his very attractive aunt, he knows he has to be involved in being their solution. But as fate would have it they are an integral part of the solution to his and his family’s problems too.

The series drives me crazy because I am so interested in the characters and the storyline and what is happening, but I am so frustrated with this authors writing style. The things she leaves unsaid the scenes that she skips, it somehow manages to leave me feeling crazy, scattered, and missing something but but still pulled into the story on pins and needles to about what will happen next.

It's review time 🎧
Warning ⚠️: 2nd book in a series, crazy big family, a lovely beach kid, cancer, a comedy mixed with pain, spectator scam.

Narrator score🎧 ; the narrator was great, she did an amazing job with this book. I love her voice.

Level of steam🔥: well they take time to get there, I think when they got there it was hot. I liked it.

Level of anxiety and sadness0😱😢: you have this beautiful little boy that is sick, it did broken my heart to little pieces,

The book itself📖: its the second book of the crazy big family and Sunday dinners , well the book was as good as the first one it was a great story. I loved it. I loved the confusions the pining, the boy, he was so sweet. Everything was just well written. I enjoyed the book extremely. Can't wait for the other books to be on audio.

This one was definitely an improvement. There’s still a frustrating amount of miscommunication and flat out lack of communication that really makes my skin crawl with anger.

But I’m pleased we finally know more about their gifts and that things are finally coming together with whatever major mojo thing is going on. I really loved Henry and Lucy wasn’t as infuriating as Mattie was, Adrien was instead lol. But his was more understandable, and honestly a lot of that fault lies with his family and all their damned secrets. I really hope they continue with this honesty stuff because it makes the story much better.

Will’s surprise really caught me off guard but I loved it, and I love that things are progressing for Sam. I def will keep reading to find out how things work out for that poor guy.

Word of wisdom...read these books in order...there is a progression.
Book 2 is mainly Adrian and Lucy" (and Ree) story. It is very emotional and touching - just what you would expect from Dr. Adrian the pediatrician. But that isn't all.
We learn more about the close, wonderful, fun, loving, yet imperfect Trellis clan. More of the paranormal, magical influence comes to play. Each person struggles with their own "side effects" of their "gift". Somewhat strange that the family doesn't realize they each have these gifts and always refer to poor Sam as weird or strange. But maybe this is each person's way of protecting their family?
I like that each story brings out more of each individual yet continues to evolve and involve the whole family. So much power...combustion must occur soon...a cliffhanger... AHHHH...need to read next installment!

Let me preface by saying that I am on the last book of the Circle series but I will refrain from giving any spoilers beyond this book. OMG, just when I thought I was starting to understand how Ms. Lily wrote she goes and throws me a curve, and instead of watching and reading about one couple there are like three here plus more on Jake and Matilda from book one plus a little more about the other Trellis siblings, nice play Ms. Lily nice play. The main couple is Adrian Trellis and Lucy omg they were so cute and confused it was so sweet and weird all at the same time. Then we meet William and his wife yup totally did not see that coming. Lastly, we learn more about Sam omg my heart breaks for him like Ms. Lily can he find her already this is just mean. Omg loved this book.

This picks up where the first book left off. The Trellis family, mostly, has no idea of the power they wield. Adrian Trellis knows there is something different about him and what he can do to people. Because of that he keeps anyone that is not family at arms length, until he meets Henry. He feels compelled to help the small boy, especially when he lays eyes on his Aunt Lucy. As the story about the family continues, Adrian and Lucy must deal with the power within Adrian and the danger that is nearing Lucy. This will make you laugh out loud, swoon at the passion and keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for what comes next. I'm loving this series!!!

Amazing!

I am still in awe of these books and I'm just on the second one. The world the author creates is enchanting and compelling. I wasn't sure about the first book a third into the first one, but by the end I couldn't wait to read the next. The author did a good job of explaining just enough to intrigue a reader to keep reading yet still left enough vague to keep the mystery. This is even more difficult when introducing a new world or concept. The characters personalities are different enough and the H and h are obviously made for each other. I would definitely recommend these books, particularly if someone is drawn to the paranormal.

Wacky but romantic

Ok, with the first book I was lost but still enjoyed the crazy lol. After reading this, I finally understand better the gifts. Its like we the readers are growing along with them. As if a person in real life is trying to get a grip on their abilities, we too are learning. Its a perspective I find kinda cool. This story Line for this series is truly unique. I really like this series. I just wish the intimate scenes were less quick. I mean come on, everything else is so detailed why not the hot and heavy. Lol. I'm looking forward to Sams story next. Damn its gonna be good

Still loving the familial vibes. A lot more paranormal activity in this book than in the first volume. I was a bit fearful that this series would be the kind where each book would feature a different brother and the stories would essentially be the same. I’m happy to report this is not the case. Not only that, but I think four different romances (Sam, Adrian, William and Bethany) are revealed so it’s not limited to one sibling.

Who says the rich don’t get preferential treatment?

How in the heck did Lucy get custody of Henry? It’s obvious that Linda didn’t sign over parental consent. He would have been thrown into the foster care system faster than you can say white on rice.

Busy, busy bees

A hive of information is given in this tale. Like a colossal unloading of data. At times it is overwhelming. I have read paranormal tales before but this is more mystical arts almost so it's been a bit harder to keep up but it it utterly fascinating.
The first book of this series kinda hints at powers and dances around it. The title obviously beliefs that something will happen eventually. It does here. The tea is spilled- all over.
I love it! It's quirky, endearing, frustrating as heck, and enthralling. The booms are all interconnected and need to be read in order to make any sense.
