This spooky tale starts just outside a cemetery on a regular Tuesday in middle school.

Beyond the iron gates, Grey, the kid at the center of this graphic novel, encounters a rather strange creature, who wants to give him unusual gifts...

....in exchange for learning what it's like to be human.

This unusual friendship builds over the first half of the book. But the second half, in my opinion, is where this story shines, thanks to the beautiful artwork of the underworld.

In the underworld, the characters face some ...interesting... obstacles

which they overcome with the mighty prowess that the protagonist of a middle grade book should always bring with them.

What I loved the most about this book is the art. Each panel is done in watercolor, which at first looks like a rather tame, could-be-digital, could-be-marker, color-inside-the-lines style when Grey and his friend are still in the safety of their human world.

But the closer they get to danger,

the more chaotic and out-of-control the watercolor gets.

Although the story doesn't quite reach its full potential, the visuals here are properly spooky, even for the occasional adult reader. I definitely had fun reading it. You don't see chaotic watercolor done well every day.

A spooky and cute, middle-grade graphic novel that I fell in love with.

This story follows Grey, who takes a short-cut through the cemetary one day and has a run-in with a ghoul named Lavinia. Lavinia takes a liking to him, which throws his life into a series of adventures! Really sweet and a lovely read.

Re-read 2024: I was organising my Graphic Novels when I saw this one and my mood was just right for it. In this one we meet Grey who meets a ghoul named Lavinia! They become friends, but ghoulkind is not having it so a lot of exciting and scary moments happen. I love the friendship between Grey and Lavinia and I love how far Grey goes to save his friends when things go south. The art was fab!

A perfect read for Halloween. Ghouls, friendship, spookiness!

I am SO glad I bought this book! And even happier that Amazon had it in stock. They are so finnicky with releases lately so I am glad I got it in time for the spookiest time of the year, Spooktober. The month leading up to Halloween!

In this book we meet a boy named Grey who lives in New-England, the place that, if I have to believe all the books and movies I have seen floating around, is very haunted! Though I am sure that Grey just thought that meant ghosts. Not angry witches and ghouls that want to be friends with him. Yep. You read that one right. Grey has attracted the liking of a ghoul. What happens next is equal measures spooky and cute. Because Lavinia (that is her name and I loved it) likes giving gifts and helping out Grey. I had a laugh at Grey though, because back in the beginning of the book he was just utterly frightened (and understandably so) because of the gifts and the mysterious being that kept entering his house at night. I mean, I don’t blame him, I would also be frightened if I got dead stuff as gifts. Dolls with teeth. A bone comb.

But then they meet and they become fast friends. I just loved seeing Lavinia and Grey together and I adored seeing her tell the gruesome stories about the town he lives in. From a second library with the bad books that no one should touch to a potential huge ass snake living in the sewers.

But then things go south, because ghouls and humans aren’t supposed to be friends. And from that moment the book gets even more exciting and a tad more spooky and haunting when Grey and Lavinia have to go deep inside Necropolis to get back someone. I just LOVED this part and I loved finding out more about ghouls, about the bad witch, see the town and see where all the ghouls lived when not sucking on someone’s dead body.
How it all ended was just such a trip and I was on the edge of my very comfy seat because how would this one end? I am a bit sad by the last pages, I guess I could have seen it coming..

The art was just perfect fitting for this book. I loved the designs for the characters, Lavinia and the other ghouls especially. Necropolis was just gorgeous (though no, I wouldn’t want to visit XD).

All in all, a very awesome book that I would recommend to all in the need for something spooky but also love good friendships.

This graphic novel was perfecto! The story begins one morning as Grey and Marshall are walking to school. Grey's history presentation, a near-scale model of the Artimage Cemetery, is awkward to hold, so he decides to cut through the cemetery and encounters more than he could have ever expected--a ghoul named Lavinia.

Ghouls and humans are not supposed to be friends.

When the other ghouls and a mean witch hear of their friendship, they do everything they can to stop Grey and Lavinia--including kidnapping Marshall.

Filled with friendship, facing fears, having the confidence to do what is right, The Ghoul Next Door is a fast-paced page-turner that will leave the reader wanting more.

I do hope we get to see more adventures between these characters.

Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for the opportunity to read an advance reading copy.

This is a very spooky middle grade graphic novel about a boy who becomes friends with a ghoul. When their friendship causes something horrible to happen they try to fix it. This was a miss for me. It started out rather strong but then I become very disinterested. I do recommend it, especially for kids that like spooky and dark things.

Pleasant enough middle-grade horror fiction. Grey is fascinated with the town graveyard, but loses some of that excitement when the graveyard (or more specifically, a ghoul in it) becomes fascinated with him. The Gollum-esque ghoul honestly might be a tad too scary for the middle-grade audience. Cullen Bunn scales up the creepiness and Cat Farris's (excellent) art doubles down.

I enjoyed The Ghoul Next Door initially, when it was simply a tale of a boy and a ghoul exploring an unlikely friendship. The last third of the book, though, introduces an entire sub-graveyard world of ghosts and ghouls that unnecessarily widens the story lens. What started as a tight plot gets a little floppy (and less creepy). Still, a solid spooky option for a younger audience.

Also: Bunn writes Grey as if the kid cannot tell a lie. There are a lot of excuses in between "a ghoul ate my homework" and "I dunno what happened," but Grey can't seem to find one.

This solidified the phrase "never judge a book by it's cover" because this book was absolutely something I picked up based on the title & artwork while at my local library.

While the first third of this story was mildly intriguing it didn't outright capture my attention; I really had to push my way through this 200 page graphic novel. The plot is about an unlikely friendship yet I was never really convinced by either the ghoul OR human connections throughout. The ending was also rushed and overall a bit over the top.

My only reasoning for 2 stars versus 1 star is my appreciation for the artwork, even if it wasn't necessarily my preferred style.

I was kind of mixed on this one, and I wonder what age it would be best for. I found the ghouls legitimately creepy and felt like it might have been the type of thing that would have given me nightmares as a kid. And they're not even the villains! I also thought this book was a little slow-moving, but there's a lot to like, including all sorts of depictions of friendships.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was pure fun and it made me laugh-out-loud which isn't easy to do. (Grey staring at the doll all night --it makes me giggle every time I think about it.)

Grey makes a miniaturized version of the graveyard but accidentally drops it in a hole on the way to school. Now he keeps getting strange gifts left on his porch, on his desk, and he always feels eyes watching him...Marhsall, his BFF, tells him he needs to stay away from the graveyard, but Grey doesn't think he's in danger.

Lavinia is a ghoul. She wanted to know, just for a little bit, what it means to be human. Unfortunately making contact with humans is strictly forbidden.

Highly recommend. Just the right amount of spooky for young readers.

'The Ghoul Next Door' by Cullen Bunn with art by Cat Farris is a creepy graphic novel for young readers about making new strange friends.

Grey likes the graveyard in his town. It makes a nice shortcut to school and he even made a model of it for a school project. Now, someone is creeping around his house and leaving him strange gifts. It's Livonia, a ghoul who lives in the graveyard and wants to be his friend. But, there are those who don't think they should be friends and they will have to take a strange journey to save their friendship and Grey's life.

I liked this spooky story of ghouls, a scary witch, and a whole bunch of rats. The art is great and I love the moral of not being afraid of someone because of how they look or the weird food they might eat.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from HarperCollins Children's Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

For a juvenile graphic novel, this book was much scarier than I was anticipating but I also really relished in it. I really loved the illustrations. The beginning panels, introducing us to a boy in a town with a storied witchy past, really reminded me of Hocus Pocus. Super fun and a little scary, this graphic novel was way different than a lot of it's compatriots in the juvenile category!

Pretty fun and legitimately creepy - it says it is recommended for ages 8-12 but I can see kids on the younger end of that range getting really spooked. Adults are almost entirely absent, allowing the kids to traipse around graveyards and into the realm of the dead freely - which makes for a more exciting read.

Cute story!! I’m a nerd so the lore and history of Ghouls and such was interesting— and the artwork was awesome!

I read this book to prove to my students that the books at the school library are interesting; and I did just that :p

I only rate the graphic novels I love, and I loved this one. The art was perfect and so creepy for a creepy/scary story! It is rated MG but our 9yo would've been too scared to read it. Parents, know your kids.

This is a great, creepy, ghost story for children. There are also plenty of thrills, chills, and ghouls to even scare adults as you read this fun story.

I loved reading this terrific ghoulish graphic novel. A young boy named, Grey meets a ghoul who lives near his home. When they first meet they scare each other but over time they develop a very endearing friendship. They show that even ghouls have a heart and can be heroes.

There are so many great lessons that kids can learn by reading this terrific tome. They can learn about friendships, you never leave a friend behind, never judge a book by it's cover, and many more lessons.

I also enjoyed being able to see a glimpse inside the world of Ghouls and Ghosts. You get to see what the afterlife is like for ghouls and ghosts.

The artwork in this graphic novel really compliments the story very well. The version of the book I read the artwork was entirely in black and white. The various tones of black and white really adds to the creepy nature of the story. I hope the final book is entirely in black and white.

I think children who enjoy ghost stories will love this book. That being said, kids who get scared or worried reading scary books might not enjoy this graphic novel.

Adults who enjoy fun ghost stories should give this book a try. I read this graphic novel at night with all the lights off except for the light from my ipad and I became immersed in the story and the world of ghouls.

So enjoy this ghoulish tale and be sure to keep the lights off.

Stay awesome and keep reading!

I was only familiar with Cullen Bunn from his graphic novels for adults, so I was curious about this one. This is a dark fantasy/horror setting with a juvenile adventure woven into it, and also some really peculiar humor.
Grey is the kind of kid who built a model of the local cemetery for a History Day project at school. What could go wrong with carrying the model through the cemetery as a shortcut? Yes, he really did that, leading to a bizarre story and an unusual new acquaintance with a somewhat unusual view of the world.
The adventure involves the cemetery, things living in and under the cemetery, and things that are quite dead, but still actively involved in the town. The story is totally outrageous, and generally very good. I liked the artwork's portrayal of the creatures better than I liked her portrayals of people. This is only a minor flaw, though.

An adorable and every-so-slightly spooky graphic novel for kids about a boy and the ghoul who befriends him. Grey lives in a town with a past haunted by the Salem Witch Trials, but he's not afraid of the graveyard he sometimes takes as a shortcut to school. But then something terrifying happens: a creature steals his history diorama and starts leaving gifts in his room at night. After saving his life one night, Grey realizes the creature isn't so terrifying after all. She's actually a ghoul named Lavinia and all she wants is a friend. Too bad the other ghouls living in the graveyard don't trust humans. And if Grey and Lavinia don't stop hanging out in the world of the living, Grey just might wind up joining the dead.

I love, love, loved this middle grade graphic novel. It took a little bit to really get going, but as soon as Grey properly met Lavinia, I was hooked. Such a cute story about friendship.

[netgalley disclaimer]

Coming off reading Bunn's incredible Empty Man and Harrow County series, this new younger addition seems a bit less exciting. There are some riffs on the relationship between the skinless boy and Emmy mirrored in Lavinia and Grey's relationship.

Bunn does a good job of writing the creepy and unsettling really well --the elements are interesting. I think the issue here is that the toning down for the younger audience didn't mesh in a way his contemporaries work does. There are some popular bait hooks for kids like the Salem Witch Trials and "weird kids" who hang out in or are overly comfortable with cemeteries, but these ultimately are not detailed enough in the story. In particular, Grey's immediate trust of a flesh eating ghoul AND the tenuous connection to the witch trials feel weakly explored. There was potential, especially with the unusual gifts, for this to be a new exploration of ghouls in children's books. Unfortunately, it missed the mark a bit.

Great read for middle grades and up. The book is an illustrated novel about a boy Grey, who starts to have strange nightmares after walking through a cemetery as a shortcut to school. Grey takes the dare from his best friend Marshall and soon finds he is really opening a dangerous zone. The boys have a history assignment to make a presentation about the history of their town. A legendary witch hanging for Marshall's choice and Grey has made a model of the ancient cemetery with its fabled residents. This was a free book to read and review. I have no connection to anything involved. Truly enjoyed the illustrations and the verbal content. It would be a perfect present for someone going to camp, an overnight slumber party, of family camp-out! Good clean scares and some historical knowledge too!

"Eleven-year-old Grey lives in the legend-haunted New England town of Ander’s Landing, and he can’t help but feel like a pair of eyes is watching his every move. He discovers odd, gruesome bits and pieces from the graveyard that are left for him as gifts, like art carved from bones or jewelry made from (hopefully not human) remains. Soon, Grey is caught up in something bigger than he could ever have imagined."

"The Ghoul Next Door" is an intriguing graphic novel by Cullen Bunn. It is a delightfully creepy read, filled with interesting tidbits on ghouls vs ghosts and will be perfect for the Halloween season in 2021. My only hesitation is that my stomach recoiled at some of the "gifts" Grey receives, however, I'm sure will not be a problem for younger readers.
