Abducted by an ancient creature of darkness and thrust into an inhuman court obsessed with perfection, Sage must hide her flaws to survive. Determined to beat them at their own game, she becomes the warlord’s consort and bides her time until she can escape. But the longer she plays queen in the enemy’s throne, the more difficult it is to resist her captor’s seductive charms.
Caught between his duties to his kingdom and his duties to his heart, every choice Tehl makes seems to be the wrong one. When deadly secrets are revealed, he finds himself negotiating peace with the very monsters that threaten his kingdom and captured his bride, but Sage isn’t the woman he knew before.
As war looms on the horizon, Sage must decide who to trust and what sacrifices she's willing to make for her land. One mistake may mean destruction not only for herself, but for those she loves..

This book has driven me crazy for a few days now. I've read 50% , stopped and just restarted. I cant begin to understand Sage. While with Zane she claimed she was in love with Thel. Understanding the situation, she never rebelled against the warlord. She gets saved and is back home and instantly fights against Thel. Where is the love she claimed she had? Her revelations about her feelings? She comes back and is not trusting of the people who love her. Anyway, the book is just ok and I'm edge whether to get the next book when it's released.

The beginning of this book was kind of depressing bc there’s a lot of violence against women and that made it hard to read but halfway through it got a little better and I couldn’t put it down.
I was a little confused by this book. THEN at the END I realized that my library had the ebook listed wrong as number 1. It’s actually 3&4. So it really says something that I was so drawn in and able to follow for the most part when I read it like an animal totally out of order. I imagine anything confusing was due to reading out of order. Good story.
I jumped in the series, which i didnt realize but still hoping for a good plot and character desription. Sage is supposed to be so strong but seems so weak through the book. It disgusts me how she seems to be the victim though proclaiming the whole time she isnt. I wouldnt waste my time though i got caught up enough to finish this series( I hate myself) good characters but woman are fragile and will break on emotuonal impact. Not flattering for us strong women out here.
One of the best villains I've read in a while. It was hard to read the mind games at points, and the suffering as well. But the sweet moments in this book had me screaming, because FINALLY you know.
This book is 300 pages of literal torture and 300 pages of idk because I never read it.
We pick up nearly right where we left off with Sage being captured by her previous tormentor and taken out of Aermian territory.
Kay does a great job of depicting Stockholm syndrome and Sage's journey in the first 300 pages is adequately harrowing for her circumstances, but at some point I start to miss the plot.
The introduction of Jasmine's character feels so haphazardly done as she is clearly just a mechanism to facilitate Sage's character arc. Every chapter told from Jasmine's POV then feels entirely inconsequential and a digression from the main story.
Tehl's perspective is given fairly infrequently and I can't tell if I wanted more or less of it. I wanted more of Tehl in order to get away from how one note (albeit well done) Sage's perspective is in the first half of the book, and less because Tehl isn't doing anything interesting in the time that his wife is away.
In fact, I kind of felt like he wasn't doing enough to get his wife back. Sam and Tehl were joking and training per usual. We didn't get enough of their POV's to really assess if they were doing everything they could and if their emotional responses to Sage's kidnapping were appropriate and believable.
If a book is well written enough, it takes a lot for me to not finish it. But I couldn't find the story here so eventually I gave up.
It didn't take me long to realize this was bad. Not just the characters, but the writing too. I will say that it is very fast-paced and addictive, and I was surprised I kept reading it despite shaking my head through every sentence. But by-the-by, possessive, lustful men are not cute. They're creepy.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Clearly not the target audience for this one😂
As the saga continues, the intrigue and action continue to keep you on the edge of your seat. Every twist, every turn jeep syour head spinning on a roller-coaster ride. One minute you love the warlord, the next you are as eager for his death as Tehl is. At the same t8me, Sage's struggles are tear-jerking reminders of how cruel life can truly be.
I couldn’t put this down, the story telling was amazing. All the emotions had me crying many times, laughing, and smiling. This book really got into the dark and unspoken truth of trauma.
Totally the best book in the series. The intensity is addictive, the villain is written perfectly. And the relationship between the characters makes you feel like you are part of the family. Will read this again.
So very depressing and violent including rape, torture, kidnapping, psychopaths, etc. I don’t recommend. It’s easy to get sucked in but wow I had to step back and see how sad it made me. The world is Bad enough. Don’t need to read more about the filth possible.
I'm not crying your crying... oh my gosh full blown sobbing I'm too invested she just wants freedom 😭 ugh such a good book I finished it in one day I swear!
