All your favorite characters are back with hilariously fun new Sumo-grams, (almost) no-hitters, and even a sidewalk concert featuring Enslave The Mollusk. Say goodbye to boredom and hello to hilarity with Big Aloha!
Lincoln Peirce is a cartoon artist from Portland, Maine. He lives with his wife and two children, and occasionally gives lectures to students about cartoon creating. Peirce writes the comic strip "Big Nate". Peirce's comic strip, Big Nate, is featured as an island on the famous children's website, Poptropica. Big Nate appears as the first cartoon on The Maine Sunday Telegram in the comics section.
He studied art at Colby College in Maine were he began cartooning. He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before teaching art and coaching basketball at a New York highschool for 3 years. He currently plays hockey with "an old men's league" and describes it as his best sport as a child. In an interview with the Washington Post, Peirce stated that his last name is pronounced "purse" and is not a misspelling of "pierce."
Lincoln Peirce was a member of the "Surviving as a Print Cartoonist" Panel at the Maine Comics Art Festival with fellow cartoonists Corey Pandolph (Barkeater Lake, Toby: Robot Satan, The Elderberries), Norm Feuri (Retail, Gill) and with Mike Lynch moderating. On the panel Lincoln revealed he is currently working with some animation and licensing projects including the addition of a Big Nate island to the online game Poptropica.
Low-stakes, harmless jokes, and countless pop culture references ensure that Big Nate continues to be an easy read that's perfect for some quick, pick up and go entertainment.
These books are perfect as palate cleansers. It was funny and light, and I believe some of the jokes here were intended for an older audience to appreciate. Just some funny everyday and school hijinks.
I find, that when I am in the midst of a tough week or a bunch of tough reads, that something light and funny is both needed and essential - Big Nate! fills that bill every single time [I have all the ones I can find on wait lists on OverDrive and Hoopla for moments just like this] and this one came at a perfect time and was just what I needed.
It is summer in Nate's world and that means working at the comics store, playing baseball and searching for the perfect summer girlfriend. We also see Nate try to date someone he really likes [dating in 6th grade seems crazy to me], get an ill-advised haircut and continue to struggle in school. Most of the regular characters are there, but there wasn't an overabundance of characters like Mrs. Godfrey and Gina and I found that to be refreshing this time out. Very funny, very fresh and like I said, a perfect distraction on a tough day. Middle Grade kids and their parents will love sharing these comics together!! Well done.

Big Nate is back and he says Aloha!. I was so hyped to see a new Big Nate appear on Netgalley, I just love the series. Both this one (filled with comics) and the other one (with more story and comics/illustrations everywhere). Oh, and I guess I also like the picture books that are appearing. Haha, I just love Lincoln Peirce’s writing style. You just want to keep on reading.
In this one a ton of things happen and at times I just wish there was a bit more of a clear line in the stories, not blocks of comics forming one story and then we go on to the next. But despite this I still had fun seeing what happened in Nate’s life and boy oh boy a lot of things happen. We read about his baseball adventures (along with an assistant coach who isn’t the best, but hey it beats having your dad coach you), he has a crush on a girl (Daisy) and they go out on a date which…. well you have to read that one, we read about grandparents, dogs, IQ, mall cops who are also photographers for school pictures, don’t let your best buddy cut your hair, Randy and something bad he did, and oh man, there is just so much more. There is definitely never a dull moment in Nate’s life. While he may think there is, I think he has a pretty exciting life. Filled with friends, weird teachers, even weirder dogs, and crushes.
I think my favourite story out of these was the Daisy story, I am quite proud that he talked to her and that they went on a date. I mean, this is Nate. Mostly he just pines from the shadows, or talks about it with his friends. So I was happy to see him grown up a bit! The least would be the baseball stories! Sorry, I am just not a sportsfan that much, and baseball is just a bit too bland for me. While there were moments I did like during the baseball comics (some silly jokes or how Nate acts), it just was a bit too much for me at times.
Oh, and I am so glad a certain character has very little spotlight in this one cough Gina cough, and even Randy doesn’t appear to be too much like he normally is.
All in all, I cannot wait for the next one and I will keep on saying everyone should be reading Big Nate (and also Max and the Midknights). Do it!
I think the whole Big Nate series is good because you can relate to him. If you are down, you read Big Nate, you feel happy. I would recommend this a lot because it will make your day when you just wanna chill and need a laugh. I would rate the series a 10.
This book was received as an ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I could not help but laugh throughout this entire book at the dialogue the characters say and it just makes the story so much better. I was laughing so hysterically that many people came over and asked what was so funny and I told them about the book. Big Nate is a very popular series in our library and all of our young readers were beyond excited to hear that it will be a series premiering on Nickelodeon. All of our Big Nate books are heavily circulated and I expect nothing less of Aloha! Many of our young patrons will find Aloha very relatable.
We will consider adding this title to our JGraphic Novel collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
it's that time of year where college reading causes all personal reading to turn into Diary of a Wimpy Kid-adjacent literature. I'm having a great time.
Critique-proof, as usual. There's never any let-up in the quality in these books, so once you're in you're in, and no online review is going to sway you otherwise. There is some variation here, mind – the book opens with the narrative of Nate trying to have dates with a girl he likes that goes on so long and with such intensity we don't even get the double-sized, non-arc weekend strips interrupting it. They're present and correct in the middle of adventures with hair removing friends, and a theft at the comic store, but some things clearly take priority. So is Nate going to grow up and get all hormonal with it? Don't be daft. Some things never change.
We get the span from the end of the school year and prank days, through the summer, and some back-to-school shopping. As usual, a fantastic look at the life of Nate with a bit more Dee Dee and not as much Gina (I wish we saw more between those two; the crossover is always fun; it would have bumped up my reading score for sure). One of the more interesting stories is that, while working as an intern at the comic book store, Nate sees Randy shoplifting. Randy, of course, being one of Nate's bullies. Nate calls for help, but when none is forthcoming, he tackles (literally) Randy. This also spins off a few strips where we discover yet another job of School Photo guy as mall cop. Of course, Nate is still interested in romance. He goes on a date with one girl, tires the pencil trick with two others, and then works his charm on the beach. Spoiler, none of them work. We get glimpses of other summer activities such as busking with Enslave the Mollusk and once again playing on the Cupcakes baseball team.
The Big Nate book series has been a favorite in our household for some time now. It doesn't matter how many of them we have read, when we see a new Big Nate book is on the horizon, the excitement is palpable.
I would equate the Big Nate series to the kind of books I want to curl up with when I want to do some easy comfort reading. They are predictable in a good way, take on new relatable topics and themes for middle-grade readers and always provide a laugh.
Our middle-school-aged son read this one with me and gave this a big thumbs up. The short stories made it perfect for bedtime reading, and like always, his favorite characters were up to new adventures that were very fun and enjoyable to read along with.
Thank you to Andrews McMeel publishing for my gifted copy.
'Big Nate: Aloha!' by Lincoln Peirce is another volume in the Big Nate series for middle grade readers.
This time around, Nate wants a new girlfriend, but she wants to take things slowly and that isn't like the Big Nate we know. Nate gets called in to pitch and unexpected things happen. Nate and Teddy come up with a plan to spend Nate's haircut money with hilarious results.
This is a consistently funny series. Lincoln Peirce knows how to time jokes and wait for payoffs. It's no wonder this series is so popular with younger readers.

This 2021 collection of Big Nate cartoons from 2017 adds Nate's nascent flirtations to the mix, much to the chagrin of his 3 musketeers: Francis, Teddy and Chad. Like so many of Nate's egotistical fantasies, this one also falls flat on its face, with female peers asking if he kisses like a "damp dishrag."
He also learns not to trust Teddy with barber clippers anywhere near his skull, with a mummy-like bandage a result he wears to school. His undiscovered knuckleball can keep his team in the game, that is, until Nate-like arrogance leads him to throw a game-ending fastball that, regardless of his fantasy, does not curve foul.
This is a fun collection of comics featuring Big Nate and all of his friends, as they navigate the minefield of sixth grade. A little bit Peanuts, a little bit Calvin and Hobbes and a whole lot of unique Big Nate style, this one kept my kiddo entertained for ages during Lockdown.

Another fun collection of Big Nate comics. Nate is chasing after Daisy, but things do not go well romance wise. Nate does get his dream job, working at the Comix shop, and manages to nab a shoplifter. Then Teddy manages to give Nate a haircut! That was a sight to see! And Prank Day was fun! In all, a fun collection!
Thanks Netgalley for the chance to read this title!
Love Big Nate! The mini stories make it great for night time reading for the grandson and I. Highly entertaining as always. Kudos on another hit Lincoln Peirce! Thanks #netgalley and #AndrewsMcMeetPublishing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Always fun. I am not tired of these and buy them for my son as soon as they are out. I try to save them as a surprise gift but I can't resist because I want to read them too.
There's never that much to talk about with these books. The plots are very simple, but in their simplicity, they're funny and adorable. Nate is always the putz, and that's what makes seeing his embarrassment and inevitable fall from his own pedestal all the more hysterical.
This was such a laughter filled graphic novel. I recommend you to read this book if you like humor books and are a fan of comics and graphic novels! Many mini reads inside for fun! Great read for kids aged 9-12.
The book is very funny but too short for my 10 year old. Nice for a very quick read. My daughter said that the pranks in the books were creative - and that is why she likes it. She would like to read more of the Big Hate books as they are funny.
Nate Wright returns along with the crazy cast of characters. Nate's budding romance with Daisy is suspect. A bad haircut, his apprenticeship at the Comic Book store at the mall, and his summer spent playing baseball all add up to laughs.
