Panpanya (Japanese: パンパンヤ) is a Japanese manga author. Their real name, age and gender are unknown to the general public.
Panpanya's books are collections of short stories, usually first published in the 'josei' (woman) magazine Rakuen. The stories mix slice-of-life and surrealism and are independent from one another, albeit sharing a roster of recurrent characters. The nameless protagonist, generally seen as a cartoon alter-ego of the author, is a girl of undefined age, sometimes portrayed as a schooler, sometimes as an adult.
Panpanya emerged from the indie doujinshi (amateur) manga scene around 2010. Their professional career started in 2013 with the book Ashizuri Suizokukan (Ashizuri Aquarium). The following book An Invitation from a Crab (2014) received international praises and was translated into English and Italian. All of their subsequent works have appeared in Italian, and some of them in English and French.

Il migliore dei volumi di Panpanya usciti finora. Mi è piaciuto moltissimo: tavole super, e ho apprezzato che le storie avessero una continuità.

Panpanya is a very reserved manga author, of whom no personal information is known, not even the gender. They have been publishing short stories for at least a decade now in a josei manga magazine (comics for adult women). Seven book collections of these stories have been published in Italy. (A couple of these books have also been released in English and French, but this one book I am reviewing is probably available only in Italian and Japanese.)
As I am concerned, the most attractive aspect of this book is the art. Trademark of Panpanya's style are their relatively detailed city environments, rendered with gentle touches of ink. Also, a certain thrift in the use of screen tones, as Panpanya mostly creates shadows by delicate cross-hatching, giving their comics a certain Western indy comics/graphic novel vibe. These backgrounds are populated by very simple cartoony characters. Most notably the author's avatar: a bobbed hair girl. The girl always looks the same, but is shown having a range of ages depending on the story: sometimes she is portrayed as a schooler, sometimes as a post-university young worker. This girl wonders around the city, experiencing the adventure of everyday life, usually showing a zen attitude about her random encounters and daily mundane events. In some cases the stories take a surrealistic turn, when the girl interacts with mami's, weird mythical badgers.
I would not call Panpanya's strips humorist. It's more about cutesy atmospheres and appreciation of small things.
The only downside of the book is that the coloured stories are only a couple and quite short. I think that Panpanya art's looks even better with delicate watercolours.
