With the theme of historical rebirth/second chance at life plus tons of lover pampering, I think fans of the danmei novel The Wife is First would also enjoy reading this one.
There are definitely some palace intrigue, but it's nothing complex and deep politically. This is not exactly light in any aspect but it is lower stakes if you really look into it despite the characters being tossed in the middle of the deadly fight for the throne. It felt like the MC has eyes and ears on anything because he knows any movement from the side of the villains. I know that he has an advantage because of his knowledge from his rebirth and I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but it also developed a lesser tension in the midst of the supposedly dangerous situation. It's not a problem for me though, because whether it's low stakes or high stakes, it's not my personal criteria for personal enjoyment. I still enjoyed this regardless of being predictable.
As I said, this is not overly complex plot-wise and there are times when a situation wasn't given enough time to properly build and ended up being glossed over instead. It's a shame because some of these situations have potential to create more depth in the overall story but ended up being superficial than it should be because of the lack of details. The whole novel has a potential but I think the author failed to grasp it.
As for the romance, I've always loved the lover pampering and doting lover trope so I did enjoy this one. The romance might be a little too fast though especially for the MC but I appreciate that the MC was aware that his initial decision of treating the ML well after rebirth was not because he fell head over heels in love with the ML right away but because of the gratitude from his last life. He knew that his good treatment was to repay the ML a favor but him being so self-aware about it makes the development of the romance more natural in that regard rather than making the MC say that he's in love right from the start. The MC is a little controlling though but the ML knows all of it and he permits being controlled and willing to submit so I guess it's all good for them. It's not my favorite part of their relationship though.
