To Stop a Scoundrel

Rate this book
She wants to protect the innocent. He wants to regain his reputation. Will working together bring redemption—or ruin?

Welcome to Book 1 in the fabulous new series from Abigail Bridges.

Spinster Lady Rose Timmons has one purpose in life: protecting the vulnerable young women in London's Society from the scores of scoundrels who would prey on their innocence. She has an extensive network of informants who keep her up to date on all their misdeeds and schemes, and she will take any action needed—even public humiliation.

Thomas Ashton, Lord Newbury and heir to the Duke of Kennet, is one of those Lady Rose has in her sights. Despite being a childhood friend—and a man she has long been fascinated with—Lady Rose is determined not to let his rakish behavior spoil the debut season of her beloved sister or any other woman.

Lord Newbury, however, has his own ulterior motives about rejoining Society after years as a rogue. He desperately needs an heir—and an heiress. Society, however, is not so eager to welcome home a prodigal son. When he crosses paths—and wits—with Lady Rose, he proposes an unexpected bargain: if she will help him regain his reputation, he will help her destroy the one scoundrel she has never been able to touch, a man who has hurt dozens of people, including Rose herself.

Lady Rose, intrigued and as fascinated by Newbury as ever, accepts the challenge. But even as they are drawn ever closer to each other, they remain unaware that their efforts to bring down a ruthless man could endanger more than their reputations—it could cost them their lives.

Abigail Bridges

Abigail Bridges wrote her first historical romance, titled The Belle of the Ball, when she was thirteen. It was, of course, horrid. But it firmly established her love of all things Regency, a mild obsession with Georgette Heyer, and a determination to become a writer.

After a master’s degree in English and years of being paid to write and edit other types of material, she has returned to her first love. She is busily binge-reading all her favorite authors, resuming her study of the history and culture of the Regency era, and plotting like a madwoman. She does all this in a small cottage near Birmingham, Alabama.

2.75/5/ Glad to be trying out a new-to-me author. Apart from a few slightly anachronistic expressions, the author had generally a good grasp of the period and setting. The spinsterish Lady Rose Timmons reluctantly agrees to a mutually beneficial working relationship with the rakish Lord Newbury, the object of her youthful infatuation. She will help relaunch his entrance back into respectable society in order to find a wife as decreed by his father, while he will assist her to covertly eradicate deceitful villains masquerading as gentlemen targeting innocent debutantes.

So the premise is a bit weak, but I was ready to be entertained. Even when they fell for one another after just a few encounters, I was going along for the ride. The writing was good enough and some of the secondary characters were interesting, especially the hero's brother, Robert, who actually made for a more compelling hero. However, the author decided to throw in a several unnecessary curveballs towards the end, probably because by then the romance was pretty much a done deal otherwise. The first might potentially be a huge traumatic trigger for some readers, and the second was a major WTH moment for me There was too much going on and not enough time spent building up the initial re-acquaintance of the protagonists, nor did the author mention what happened to Rose's pet cause which formed a major part of the story early on. I might however be persuaded to check out Robert's story.

This was an ARC from NetGalley.

💋💋

My first book from this author, and I’m so glad I read it.
The Ashton Park series really is one to go for.
Full of intrigue and very tense emotional moments, there is also an attempted rape, so a warning here for those with triggers.

I loved the book and the characters(who I hope to see more of in subsequent books ), and the storyline, all of them were great.

I’m looking forward to Abigail’s next instalment with a happy smile.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

The three Ashton brothers needed to straighten up and their father's edict was going to make it happen. They had all been living dissolute lives, but now with their younger sister making her debut they had to try to redeem themselves

Rose had grown up next door to the Ashton family and had been friends with all of them, especially Thomas. At least until they moved away when he was ten. Now, she considered herself a spinster and it was her mission to protect young ladies from being ruined by the scoundrels of the Ton. Especially this year with her sweet sisters debut.

These two meet again after years and can I say it is spectacular, how they come together! I was seriously grabbed by the first couple of chapters and could not wait to see what would happen!

A new author to me, whose writing is so seamless with the creation of the characters and surroundings, I felt I was there! Cannot wait to see what happens in the rest of this series and I urge you to read this story!

Love is a rollercoaster

Whew where to start Thomas and Rose! Rose is a spinster with a series of networks to assist other women from getting hurt or misused by a scoundrel! Thomas is not that man! He is honorable, handsome and intelligent and the playmate of Rose and his brother Robert in their youth!
This story is complex and engaging as the characters Thomas and Rose are! The amount of pain in this story physical, mental and emotional is almost breathtaking in its intensity!
Some of the misunderstanding could have been avoided if Thomas was more articulate and Rose having survived so very much pain from her previously relationship believed herself plain and unlovable!
There are truly evil people in the world and Roses ex who so viscous in his attacks not just once but twice was incomprehensible! In some villains you get their side as they talk to their victims no words were shared as this brutal man attacked both Rose and Thomas with the intent to kill! The villain didn't care that Thomas was a Duke’s son and heir! No picture in the mind of this vile man to why he was so hated filled! Financial and business background but no inner workings of his thoughts! This is just as well as they were too evil!
There are warm and tender moments from Thomas parents and even Roses parents but I much prefer the outspoken love shown by Thomas parents then the proper dictum of Rose parents!
There are several hints at Roberts unresolved feelings for Rose but I love there was no bitter brother rivalry and the younger brother Michael a!so has to overcome his fears and insecurities!
Thomas has issues with letting go even when it isn't love, he was still attached to his mistress in his head because of familiarity! Rose was an innocent in spite of her reputation which evil fought to tarnish multiple times! This author is new to me but it is love at first chapter! A few typos but nothing that could hinder the outcome which was a grand finale! Can't wait to read what's next!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

Thomas Ashton, Lord Newbury and heir to the Duke of Kennet, has spent most of his time in the ton as a rake, along with his younger brothers. But when his parents give the sons an ultimatum - marry by the end of the year or lose their inheritance, Thomas knows he needs to restore his reputation, and there's no one better than Lady Rose Timmons, former friend, and renowned protector of the vulnerable. It's not an easy arrangement, but Rose knows that this will be her last Season as a member of the ton, before retiring to Yorkshire, and she's planning on exiting with a bang. But soon their hearts are engaged, and as much as they want each other, Rose isn't willing to ruin Thomas' future, not for her own benefit.

I found myself hooked to this book straight away. It's not the longest - about 300 pages - but so much happens in that time. Lady Rose is the eldest of 6 siblings, and has been in society for nearly a decade now, she's seen four of her siblings married, and now that her youngest sister, Cecily, is set to debut, Rose is about to have her final season. An incident when she was younger has left her scarred, and she will do anything to protect other young ladies - of all classes - from those who want to hurt them. I adored this aspect of Rose's life, and the way in which she had formed her ring of accomplishes and informants to help her efforts. Thomas took a little longer to warm up to, but soon it was clear that though he meant well, he wasn't always the most smart in social situations. A lot of the events in the book tried to pull the couple away, and there's some really dark scenes (tw for attempted rape) which affect both characters immensely. I think some of the drama may have been a little contrived, but I adored the final pages, and can't wait to read Robert's book - he really deserves his happy ending after what we learnt of him here.

This is my first read from this author and I can’t wait for more in the series. Great well rounded characters with human flaws but a great connection. A dispicable villain, beautiful settings, intriguing backgrounds, deserving heroine, devoted hero, and more are all here in this impressive debut novel. I don’t give 5 stars to a new author lightly but this book earned them.

This story is a roller coaster of a tale that finally ends with a HEA. The MC are Lady Rose Timmons, the spinster, and Thomas Philip Elihu Ashton, Marquess of Newbury, heir to The Duke of Kennet. There is a lot of family dynamics throughout the story and the reader gets to know the characteristics of several of them including Thomas’ brothers Robert and Michael. Thomas, Robert, and Michael have been living the lives of rakish scoundrels for several years avoiding polite society completely and not worrying about their future. Their father has had enough and decides it’s time his sons start living up to their potential, their allowance is cut, mistresses broken off, and the three are forced to move home. It’s time to clean up their acts, attend society events, find wives, and start the next generation.

If that’s not enough of a plot the author adds in Lady Rose Timmons who is on her 9th season and plans to retire to the country after she helps her youngest sister make a successful match. Lady Rose is also known as the spinster who thwarts scoundrels that attempt to ruin young ladies. She has a large network of spies throughout London and knows the comings and going’s of all in society. She also has a history with the Ashton brothers as she grew up next door to one of their homes and used to play with Thomas and Robert. Rose has been hurt very badly in her past and carries the scars both inside and out, she believes that she cannot marry due to her past.

There is an attraction between Thomas & Rose — yet due to numerous conflicts it takes them almost 80% of the book to become a solid couple. Even then there are additional trials these two must face. It was almost exhausting reading about everything these two went through. I found my mind wandering while reading this story, there was just so much baggage included. Honestly I felt like a good third of the book could have been edited out as it really didn’t add to the romance and made the story drag in places. This story was almost depressing in parts and I felt like it was headed to a tragic ending throughout most of the book. Not an uplifting romantic read.

I will likely read the next books in the series because I am curious about Robert & Michael. Hopefully there will be some happier times for Thomas & Rose as well.

***This story should have a trigger warning for assault, attempted rape, and attempted murder. ***

This story captured my heart. I found myself particularly drawn to Rose , broken in the eyes of society, in her own body and mind, but not in spirit. Thomas, Robert, and Michael are all complex men, and I related well to firstborn, independent, and somewhat introverted Thomas who also proves to be lovingly tender and fiercely protective. I look forward to Robert's and Michael's stories. The author did a wonderful job presenting the hemorrhagic stroke signs, symptoms, and rehabilitation that affected the parents. Both sets of parents are great secondary characters. I recommend this book to history romance readers who enjoy complex characters and unusual circumstances.

New-to-me author Abigail Bridges writes a great story about a scarred woman, Rose, who refuses to let what happened to her happen to any other woman. When Thomas, a childhood friend, decides to join the marriage mart, Rose’s protective nature rises. She soon finds out that Thomas is not the rake society thinks he is. He and his family set out to help Rose get justice against an enemy. Working together, they see strengths in each other that others do not see. I LOVED this. Strong, scarred heroine who is vulnerable and the hero is protective. I could have done without the hero fantasizing about his former mistress, or at least for there to have been some angsty goodness surrounding it, but that gets smoothed over far too quickly. Lots of other great stuff, and interesting characters! On to the next. TW for sexual assault.

Ugh, the drama!
This book could've been way shorter, like literally half its size should've been cancelled, it was repetitive and the way the miscommunication between the couple was written made me feel mentally exhausted, it turned into a chore.
The plot was messy, it looked like the author had many ideas for the book, so instead of chosing one, she took all of them, you get the villain story, and the strong independent woman, the miscommunication trope, and the can't-get-over-my-ex trope.
I don't why the decision of making the book quite lengthy was taken, but I'm not happy about it 🤦‍♀️
The characters were irritating, i didn't like the cat and mouse routine, and the whole on again off again kept me breathless, not from the thrill mind you, but from the frustration.

This is a very good debut historical romance novel that I was close to giving 4 1/2 or even 5 stars to at one point, I was so emotionally involved in it. Unfortunately, I felt that there were a few too many unresolved issues, and there were scenes missing that would have shown H/h's relationship deepening once they married. Quiet, contemplative dialog isn't glamorous, but I require it as a reader to believe in the MC's. The premarital letters H/h wrote back and forth were cute, but didn't take the place of face-to-face conversation. And it's not enough for characters to call their relationship "complicated"--I want to see how they try to uncomplicate it.

Without further ado (because it's Sunday night, and it's late), here's my take on what else worked/ didn't work:

--I liked the author's direct, somewhat wry writing style. Another reviewer took issue with comments that are in italics, believing this to be a reflection of an omniscient point of view, when these are clearly thoughts belonging to specific characters. Granted, there are a few editing errors that the author let slide (the occasional errors are in grammar and spelling; and yes, there are Americanisms). But there's nothing wrong with brief italicized asides, as long as you don't keep switching back and forth between perspectives. I also appreciated the lack of purple prose. Many established romance authors overdo it.
--Rose is the kind of "older but wiser" heroine I tend to like. She's canny, she's tough, she's not perfect, and for this reason she's relatable.
--The banter between Rose and Thomas, the hero, is witty.
--Secondary characters are pretty well fleshed out.
--The plot started off as if it might be your typical Regency, but then became more suspenseful as Rose's past was revealed.
--I always hate the Big Misunderstanding scene, because it's usually over something that's easily resolved if both people would simply discuss the issue, but it's at least somewhat believable here, considering Rose's past and lack of self-esteem.
--The scene around the 60% mark at the ball, involving Rose being dragged off to another room, is one of the most harrowing scenes I've read in a historical romance in a while, and there was a realness to Rose and Thomas's interaction that got to me emotionally. I also appreciated that the author made an attempt to depict the effects of trauma, and although the H/h's sex scene occurred too quickly afterward for my taste (a typical flaw in most romance novels), at least Rose's fear doesn't seem to magically disappear overnight. NOTE: If you have ever been the victim of a violent assault, this scene might be a trigger for you.

On to what didn't work for me. POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD:
--Rose's mom. No getting around it, she was a terrible person. Not a knife-wielding rapist like the main villain, no, but read between the lines and you get the picture of a neurotic narcissist who rolled her traumatized daughter under the bus. Spent Rose's entire childhood making her feel like garbage, then after Rose was almost killed, put her down for being a spinster and foisted off on her the responsibilities for the household. The conversation she and Rose had toward the end of the book did nothing to make me like the mom more. She needed to at least apologize and try to acknowledge what Rose had been through. Rose's dad was sweet, but I started to dislike him for not being stronger and standing up to his wife.
--Toward the end of the book, when the villain is apprehended, Thomas's dad tells him that the courts went easy on H because everyone was aware of how Rose had been treated by the villain in the past. But were they? Her family had covered up what had really happened, and the bad guy spread around the rumor that he'd dumped her because she was barren. This part of the plot didn't ring true to me. I was expecting Rose to have to summon up her inner strength and reveal what had really happened to her in order to help exonerate Thomas.
--For a good chunk of the book, I thought Robert's relationship with Rose was more interesting than her relationship with Thomas, and that she and Robert had a better rapport. I almost wished Robert had been the love interest at times. I liked Thomas, but his only real distinguishing quality was his hot temper. He seemed constantly under his parents' thumb.
--Why does Robert go from likable to jerky as the plot progresses? There are hints tossed the reader's way, but nothing ever is explained. Then suddenly, in the epilogue, he's going to be a father?? And Michael as well?? I understand that what happened with both of Thomas's brothers will probably be addressed in subsequent books in the series, but I hate when authors pull the focus away from the H/h in the current book.
--As mentioned earlier, the conclusion is very abrupt. It was almost as if the writer couldn't wait to finish. The situation with the H's mother seemed thrown in at the last minute and unnecessary. I really felt like I needed to spend more time with H/h after everything they'd been through.
--Finally, there's a big "no-no" here that kind of ruined the HEA for me: Thomas's ongoing hang-up with his former mistress. Recurring dreams usually have to do with unresolved issues, but why would he keep dreaming about her if their relationship had just been "comfortable"? To me, there must have been something deeper to the relationship, and this undermined the bond between H/h.

Overall, though, I did like To Stop a Scoundrel, especially for a debut novel, and I look forward to this author's future books.

NOTE: This book is not "sweet and clean." It is what I would consider a "slow burn" romance, with the sex scene at the 80% mark. Language is mild.

This book was a little hard to get through. I had to skim a lot because it was a bit boring. I also think regency romance is really hard to do in general because the characters can barely ever interact. They’re always worried about society and have to be so proper about everything and have to plan their few interactions they can have and the interactions they do have consist of like walking around the park or a carriage ride. And Always with someone watching and babysitting them. It just doesn’t lend to a very intimate romance haha. In this case, the author is able to find the two characters a couple of times alone together, but it just doesn’t feel like enough.

It’s basically insta love. On his side at least. She has liked him since childhood. He wants her after only meeting her one time. She does at least have a personality and is contributing to the story in a meaningful way, so that made the insta love a little more believable. But I thought the two of them working together would be a much bigger part of the story. It was barely anything at all.

The pacing felt a bit off too. At like 65% I felt like it would be wrapping up. But then it would chug along a little more to another climax and then I thought okay now it will be ending at like 80%. But then it kinda plugged along again a little more. Then there was another little bump again at the very end that felt like the story still wanted to continue to plug along unnecessarily until the actual final conclusion. And that final conflict did feel kinda unnecessary and weird. Tiny spoiler alert, but I didn’t like how he kept thinking about and missing his mistress the whole book and after meeting rose. I didn’t feel like it contributed anything to the story and just took away from his likability and my rooting for his and rose’s relationship. I’d rather him be all in with rose. I guess the author wanted to create another conflict for them but it just wasn’t done very well in my opinion. I was mostly put off by it and it lowered my opinion of him.

Overall the two just didn’t have any chemistry. There wasn’t much passion. When he got hurt, instead of rose going to him and showing him any kind of love or emotion for him and his well being, she just sits at the end of his bed and…touches his ankle😅. There just wasn’t much passion ever except the 3 times they were being intimate. Even after their first time together they didn’t even stay in the same room for the next 3 months. I get that they were sort of fighting and that his mom was going through what she was going through but like I want to see rose comforting him. Or for their passion to be so strong that they can’t help but be with each other or at least resolve their fight way earlier. It’s just so bland.

To Stop a Scoundrel by Abigail Bridges is a new series and as far as I can see, Bridges' first novel. She hit it out of the park. It is romantic; it is sexy; it is complex; and it is just about as good as it gets. Plus, it makes me hungry for the next in the series. The two leads: Lady Rose and Sir Thomas Newbury are not nearly as buttoned up as they seem. Lady Rose had been brought to scandal a few years prior and has determined she will be a spinster, but not before she gets her sister, Cecily, married to the ideal husband. Since her fall from grace, she has perfected a network of spies and knows which are the worthwhile men and which are not. She has been tasked by her father to supervise Cecily's season and all her visitors, weeding out those "gentlemen" not worthy. In this stead, she runs into Thomas and Robert Ashton, childhood friends, who have returned to society at the behest of their parents for several reasons: guard their sister, Beth, who is also making her come out; marry and produce an heir for the dukedom. They have had their time to sow wild oats and now it is over. They decide to work together.

This is an extremely well-plotted story with multiple storylines and plenty of activity. The story between Thomas and Rose was wondrous but the teaser stories of Robert and Michael were excellent as well. The men's relationship with their parents was one to envy and Rose's family was well-rounded, as well. This was the best book of the genre I have read of late. The pacing was excellent. The letters between Thomas and Rose were entertaining. The sickroom scenes were realistic. All in all, I fully recommend this book. You will love it!

THIS BOOK NEEDS TRIGGER WARNINGS

I don't understand all the 5-star reviews. I really don't.

Lady Rose is a spinster and in love with Lord Thomas Ashton, Marquess and son and heir of a duke. They were childhood friends. He claims to love her but still pines for his mistress he was forced to give up. (More on that later )

Lots of bad things happen. Really. Bad. Things. Never ending bad things. I didn't look for trigger warnings but there should be a few, if there aren't any. It got so bad I had to skim several places. We're talking SA trauma -- both recounted and on page. The hero beats up someone more than once (one of whom dies) & gets shot & nearly dies himself Another character has a stroke.

But it seemed plain weird how the hero keeps dreaming of his former mistress -- A live in lover -- whom his father made him give up at the start of the book. I had a hard time with his declaration of love for Lady Rose while dealing with his nightly dreams of longing for this mistress, lamenting no longer sleeping in her embrace. (Lady Rose had trouble dealing with his nightly dreams of another woman, too, when he says his nightly "good night, Kitty." on their wedding night.)

The last 10% felt rushed, with a focus I would not have chosen. The abrupt ending left me unsatisfied with no resolution to the core issue at that moment -- was Lady Rose satisfied her husband no longer subconsciously pined for his former mistress? Will she let him back in her bed? Will he stop compulsively saying "Good night, Kitty" every night to a woman who is not there? We'll never know. The story just stops.

No complete intimacy until 90%, so a lot happens in that 10% of the story.

I can't recommend this.

I'm surprised this is the first story by this author because she writes like a someone who has been at her craft for years.

This story will take you through so many ups and downs. My heart ached for the h and all she endured. To think how much control and power men had in this time period, with women having none. This did not stop our h when something horrible happened to her. She retreats from being on the marriage mart and sets up a ring of helpful people to provide her information to help other naïve young ladies.

The H is a rake but not as bad as the Ton believed. He had a mistress for over 7 years and never slept with anyone else. The H/h knew each other growing up but lost touch. How their lives become intertwined is so emotional. I said in my subject, this should be a movie- reason - because it has so many layers to it and villains too. There is a lot of suspense, twists, intrigue thrown in with humor and great banter.

Not only did I enjoy the talks between the H/h but the h's father and the parents of the H kept the story from ever being dull.

There is heavy foreplay prior to marriage and lovemaking within marriage - heat level 5 out of 5 and described twice.

My heart ached so many times for the h. She is a strong, loving and caring women and has everyone's problems on her shoulders.

No cheating, no cliffhanger for our h/H but you are told something in the epilogue about the brother's that will be in the next stories. We get HEA, romance, steam and a satisfying epilogue. I've signed up to follow this author and encourage you to read this story and follow her too. (ljb)

To Stop a Scoundrel follows Lady Rose Timmons, a spinster whose mission in life is to protect other young women from men with nefarious intentions. Rose has a very personal reason to do so. She has a network of informants, from both the upper and lower echelons of society. Thomas Ashton, heir to a dukedom, needs to be reintroduced to polite society and set his name to rights so he can find a proper bride. He enlists childhood friend Rose to help him restore his reputation.

This book was a roller coaster of emotions. It was highly readable and entertaining. I greatly enjoyed it, even though there were several instances I wanted to throw the book across the room.

There were a lot of characters introduced. Rose had great chemistry with Thomas's brother Robert (I really want to read his book). I don't feel we ever really got to see the chemistry or the romance develop fully between Rose and Thomas, circumstances kept them apart for a large majority of the story.

This story is full of angst and should come with trigger warnings for attempted rape and attempted murder. This story was much more graphic than I expected in this genre, but I think it fit the story and the characters.

The epilogue was surprising, it spoiled the future books that will probably feature the brothers. The last quarter of the book added a lot of unnecessary drama and obstacles, and didn't necessarily endear me to the hero further.

This is my first book by Abigail Bridges and I'm excited to read more, especially in this Ashton Park series.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and freely given.

Spinster Lady Rose Timmons has one purpose in life after being hurt: protecting the vulnerable young women in London's Society from the scores of scoundrels who would prey on their innocence. Thomas Ashton, Marquis of Newbury and heir to the Duke of Kennet, is one of those Lady Rose has in her sights. Despite being a childhood friend, and a man she has long been fascinated with, Lady Rose is determined not to let his rakish behaviour spoil the debut season of her beloved sister or any other woman. Thomas, however, has his own ulterior motives, his father has given ultimatums to his three sons. Society, however, is not so eager to welcome home three prodigal sons. When he crosses paths and wits with Lady Rose, he proposes an unexpected bargain: if she will help him regain his reputation, he will help her destroy the one scoundrel she has never been able to touch, a man who has hurt dozens of people, including Rose herself.
This is the first book I've read by the author & the start of a new series. I loved it, well written with strong characters & a very well paced story. I loved Rose who was such a strong, capable woman, I loved how she had faced her demons. I also loved Thomas especially when he put his foot in it, which he did frequently. Their verbal banter was hugely entertaining & I loved how their relationship grew & developed. The road to their HEA wasn’t easy but it did make for an engrossing read, I look forward to Robert & Michael finding love
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Thomas Philip Elihu Ashton, Marquess of Newbury, had to search through a lot of pubs in London to find his two brothers. Their parents wanted them home for dinner and a talk. So Thomas was the oldest, Robert was second, and Michael was third. They had a sister Elizabeth who was starting her first season.
Lady Rose Timmons was in the attic looking for a gown to wear to a ball. Her cat had ripped it up and her mother did not want to get her one since she had been to ten seasons. She was definitely a spinster, well on the shelf. She did not want to outshine Cecily, her sister. It was her first season and she was nervous and maybe a little scared.
This was an amazing story. The three boys were to escort their sister and mother to all the balls and musicales through the season. They also had to give up their lodgings and mistresses. There are a few twists to this tale that make life difficult for both families. The characters were wonderful and so much was happening. I loved it and loved it more when they started looking for brides. It surprised me that so many interesting things could happen in a love story. I thought the excitement was great and so fun.

Lady Rose Timmons has been in love with Thomas Ashton, Lord Newbury, since he lives across from her as a young boy. Now she spends her time, protecting the vulnerable young women in London's Society from the scores of scoundrels who would prey on their innocence. Yet Thomas finds himself captivated by Rose, the more time he spends with him. Whilst he needs a wife, and an heir, he finds that Rose is all he can think of. Yet they are both unaware of the dangers they face, in trying to stop one man, from Rose’s past, who is intent on harming them both.
I am thrilled to have a new author to follow. Abigail Bridges brings to life two characters, who have strong feelings for each other, but can’t seem to communicate these feelings without causing grief. At times, the intensity of their feelings, threatens to destroy their relationship, making for such a great read! Thomas’ family, particularly his brother and mother, also bring added depth to this story. I found myself captivated from start to end and look forward to reading more about this family in the Ashton Park series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

The first book in a new series, and the first time I have read a book by this author, I do hope to read more by her in the future. The plot is intriguing and kept my interest throughout, with suspense, danger, and romance. The childhood friendship between Rose and Thomas grows into a beautiful romance, although Thomas does have the unerring ability to put his foot in it. Despite her strength of character and determination to protect other victims of ruthless rakes, Ruth is easily wounded and like many women who have experienced abusive situations, she has flashbacks and folds into herself when faced with her nemesis. The Ashton brothers have gone rogue, despite the loving relationship between their parents and the obvious love they have for their sons. However, when papa bear roars, they all come to heel, each with their own obstacles to overcome. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and was delighted that it came to such a joyful and hope-filled conclusion. I received a copy of this romance as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

3.5
This story had so much potential but lost its way towards the end.
The last 20% of this book turned it from a 4.5 even a possible 5 for myself into a 3.5 if not even closer to a 3

It should have focused on the two of them building up their relationship and getting over certain insecurities.
But instead we get the mother falling sick, which fine but then instead of the author showing us how the two of them work it out despite the difficulties, we have one rushed conversation where they discussed barely anything and boom it’s 6 months later, everyone is happy and the story is done.
How truly unfortunate.

I was missing a big conversation, as well as multiple scenes to show how the two of them work together now as a married couple that is reconciled, instead I’m left with an empty feeling.

I am interested in Roberts story though, so I might be back for that.
I enjoyed him at times more than his brother.

What a splendid series. Abigail Bridges' storytelling is a treasure for the reader and adding her to its sable of authors is a coup for Dragonblade Publishing.
Each book is filled with characters who are thoroughly and dearly developed with a continuing storyline that is wonderful to follow. There are scoundrels afoot, flawed but wonderful characters, scandal that readers will cheer, and perfectly presented period details.
The opening story of Thomas and Rose gives us nuggets of his parents', the Duke and Duchess of Kennet, past, with additions throughout the unfolding story of each of their children. The story begins in 1825, during the reign of George IV, the former Prince Regent, economically perilous times for both the peerage and England. The Ashtons are business savvy that keeps the suspense building as one misfortune after another threatens the family as they rise, again and again, from the ashes.
One reviewer said that this should be a movie but think bigger. It would be marvelous mini-series.

Scoundrels Redeemed

The scoundrels in this book just beg to be loved. The social mores of the times stifled their individual personalities and the stiff High Society dictates for choosing a spouse, basically an heir-maker, was distasteful. But in matters of family, they let nothing, or nobody, stand in their way.

Bridges created female characters who toed the societal line, but they were powerful in subversive ways. They secretly fought for the safety of young women as they attended balls in search of a spouse. I loved Lady Rose Timmons and how she stood up to the bullies in their community. She was a force to be reckoned with.

I’m anxious for the next book in the series to be published.

delightfully inspiring

This is a wonderful book of real people, with real problems and an author willing to be open minded enough not to make a fairy tale ending. I loved how the heroine worked hard to make her nightmare turn to bless others. Seeing her fight for right in a man’s world is an inspiration to us all. The hero had a lot of maturing to do and the ending is a sweet reminder of what the love of wife and family can do to help. I loved how the story showed the good and the bad and how they dealt with it. Would have loved to have told Rose’s mother to “ put a sock in it” and grow up. I loved how intuitive the hero’s mom was as well. A well written story with real characters . I felt like a part of the family and look forward to the next.

WOW! JUST WOW!!

I actually made notes as I read this story. My first read of this author was part of the Lyons Den series, followed by the prequel to this series - Philip and Emalyn’s (sorry for the spelling) story.
Ms. Bridges has produced a tale of tough reality, realistic view of the times, a plethora of human emotions: funny, sorrowful, love: Eros, familial, philos…
The heat really wasn’t overdone but emotionally draining in some parts. Erotic in others.
There was violence. And retribution. Nice quiet end to extra curricular activities with a mistress. The only real mystery was at the beginning, but the villains were dealt with.
Just a good story.
On to book 2….👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Lady Rose Timmons purpose in life is to protect other woman rich or poor from rakes and scoundrels.
Rose has a vast network of spies and informants that she often uses to gain information to bring a man down.

Lord Thomas Newbury is one man Rose is determined to keep away from her sister as this is her first season in polite society.
For the last 10 years Thomas has shunned the ton and lived peacefully with his mistress but now his father is demanding that he finds a wife and start taking his responsibilities seriously.

This was a fantastic read, Rose is a independent, strong woman who knows her own mind. Thomas also is a very strong character and I loved that when it came to Rose he did not always say the right things which led to a few misunderstandings. Great banter between the couple and their relationship was a slow burn which I prefer. This was well written and moved at a good pace. Lots of great characters which I will enjoy getting to know as the series progresses.

Thank you to Netgalley, Drangonblade publishing and the author for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
