Communicate for Change: Creating Justice in a World of Bias

Rate this book
How do we advocate for justice effectively in a world deeply divided by racial, gender and class inequalities? If we want to make a positive difference, we have to know how to recognise our own biases and blind spots - only then can we understand how to be part of the solution and start having meaningful conversations.

In Communicate for Change, journalist and communication consultant Genelle Aldred offers practical advice and guidance to help us be better listeners, readers, watchers and talkers. With insight drawn from years of experience, she breaks down the barriers to effective conversation so we can communicate in a more nuanced, thoughtful way and understand our part in bringing about a more just society.

You'll soon be noticing how singular narratives drive behaviour and conversation and how language helps to shape our views, understanding how fake news magnifies your own biases and blind spots, and reflecting on how to be a better ally; in a way that is not just performative but that creates meaningful, effective and lasting change.

Communicate for Change is a book for anyone interested in the conversations about race that have been happening in the UK and around the world, and anyone wanting to play their part in bringing about class, gender and racial equity. Thought-provoking and stimulating, it lays out how we can take that next step from learning and talking about anti-racism and unconscious bias to putting it into practice and actively shaping an environment in which justice can thrive.

Communicate for Change is an absolutely amazing book that I read in a day, I could not put it down. It will challenge your thinking and how you instinctively approach situations. As someone who seeks harmony this I knew would challenge my willingness to stand by and let things slide. This should be compulsory reading for everyone, as I'm certain it will have a positive impact. You do not come away feeling judged for your current approach or style but challenged to be better, to look at things differently and to stand up and use your voice. From the first chapter I was on the hook and knew this book would stay circling in my head for weeks after reading it. I also know it is a book I will return to time and time again.

I particularly love the final paragraph of the book:
"We can be our best with and most accepting of others when we accept ourselves. By learning how to communicate with ourselves with care, we can communicate with others with care. It is only then that we can begin to communicate successfully with other beautiful, complex, messy individuals to build a better, fairer, more equal and equitable world".

What I most love about this book is how it doesn’t take sides. Instead it encourages you to really think about how you approach conversations and how your own biases will come in to play. It asks you to recognise the assumptions you make regularly about other people and yourself and then challenge them.

If you’re looking for bullet points or step by step ‘this is how to have a conversation that solves everything’ then you’ll be disappointed, but this book has really well written points that should definitely make you stop and think and maybe feel a bit uncomfortable (which is a good thing).

If you’re more interested in making progress than being right, then this book is a very important one. You may not agree with everything in it, but taking on board even some of the ideas in here will make for better conversations and connections.

If you're seeking to make changes through communication, this book is useful. It provides an understanding of how and why communication can impact communities, and people generally. It discusses the importance of allies and communication from allies. It's written in a casual, chatty style that packs a punch. A motivational/ inspirational book for communicating for change. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
