Worse, if he doesn’t return their feelings, they’ll all die in horrible—and hilarious—accidents!
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really x 5 Love You, Vol. 1 (My Kindle Review)
Rentaro Aijo is your typical awkward but likable high school guy who has been turned down by 100 girls he has asked out, putting him in a spurned funk. That all changes after an encounter with an unusual god who tells him that he will have 100 dates in his future, but will also come with a few bizarre strings. He then meets two girls who will both be his destined soulmate: the sweet, busty Hakari and the no-nonsense tsundere Karane. Despite the quick shenanigans the three get into, Rentaro is determined to make sure they’re both happy and that they get along. Just as things go smoothly, a third girl will join in and that is the small-but-shy book lover Shizuka who gets her happy ending after Rentaro helps her find her “voice” in the group.
Aside from its harem-esque feel and awfully long title, there’s a great story in this manga with plenty of romance surprises and shenanigans and less brainless-ness Rentaro is a great protagonist as he’s likable, caring and very determined unlike the other dense guys I’ve seen in “Girlfriend, Girlfriend”, “Tomo-Chan” and “Rent-a-Girlfriend”. The plot and its premise, with a surprising catch, definitely get going after the first couple of chapters and after that it’s a packed rom-com. The girls bring a lot of complexity with their differing personalities, while also learning of one’s sad past.
For now, “100 Girlfriends” really is a fantastic manga that has a lot of romance, humor and friendship. I wonder what’ll happen when more of Rentaro’s “100 dates” will enter his life. A- (91%/Excellent)
Serial confessor and all around nice guy Rentaro is leaving middle school with 100 rejections under his belt. He bemoans his luck to a shrine and the god there lets him know that he’ll meet his soulmate in high school. What god does not mention is that a clerical error (cough) may mean that Rentaro is in for a lot of quantity over quality.
That last part might also refer to the joke density of this volume, which packs in every single gag the author can think of on every single page. And this book doesn’t so much break the fourth wall, but systematically dismantles it brick by brick. I admire the effort, although the results are very uneven.
The premise proper is the harem manga taken to a hellish extreme, where god watching Castle in the Sky on cable (I’m not even joking) leads to a couple of zeros on that soulmate count so Rentaro is literally about to attract most every female at his high school.
Rentaro learns all this when he’s trying to choose between the first two girls to catch his eye, a sneaky, yet sweet, girl and possibly the most aggressive tsundere that’s ever been written (she shouts about everything). The latter one leaves the most impression just from sheer volume.
He also learns that rejecting a soulmate will cause their death somehow, so we’re looking at a serious not-so-serious case of poly-poly-poly-poly-poly-polyamory. The back of book promises hilarious accidents, but no evidence of this yet. It feels like the parody version of Harem Royale mixed with the arbitrary end goal of Komi Can’t Communicate
The real question is probably is it funny? Yes it is. Is it funny enough? Ehh, maybe? I definitely laughed a couple times - god and Rentaro having it out is never not funny and they have the best interactions in the book, which is a wee bit of an issue.
I also loved Rentaro’s middle school friend who is literally there to set up the premise and leaves forever before even getting named (the book calls itself out constantly on things like this). There’s definitely an awareness of tropes that makes this better than it would be otherwise, certainly.
The girls are… fine. They do make one smart move in the book by not having Rentaro be a lecherous male lead. He’s a very decent guy who goes above and beyond - the lengths he goes to for the very shy third girl are positively saintly - and has genuine affection for all his rapidly multiplying soulmates.
Genuinely, the problem I have is that the book’s not quite as funny as I want and the girls aren’t especially interesting. The shy girl is something else, but other than being extreme tropes I don’t quite care enough about them for the premise to land hand enough (the sheer amount of eye injury inflicted as a running gag is something else though).
3 stars - I think it’s okay and, while having some service here and there, it turns out to be a lot tamer than I thought and tries to get its jokes from some place other than sex, which is no bad thing and unique in its genre, frankly. It’s trying hard enough that I’ll give it another volume and see how I feel.
I grabbed the first volume of Kimi no Kotoga Daidaidaidaidaisukina 100nin no Kanojo for the same reason I buy any Jump-related manga published by Seven Seas: I fucking hate VIZ. Uh, wait, well, not quite. I mean, I do hate VIZ and I wish they'd die like TokyoPop did so all their licenses would go to better places and they could come back like TokyoPop eventually but in a lesser manner where no one would give a shit. But I bought this under the assumption that it would be good, lewd fun. And I think also because there was an anime coming out? I don't remember if that happened. Probably did, but I haven't seen it yet.
Anyway, this is like a parody of harem manga, going to an extreme where the protagonist is apparently intended to have one-hundred girlfriends. Or, unlike most harem manga, Rentaro will actually date girls instead of having them all compete for his attention until the very end when a main girl is chosen. Actually, quite a good twist, Rentaro meets the first two girls at the exact same time; many harem stories make it so the First Girl is the ultimate "winner," leading to sayings such as "First Girl Worst Girl" when readers inevitably become more attached to this or that latecomer, who will inevitably lose the "MCbowl." So even if this progresses in such a way that Rentaro must choose one, singular girl at the end, there's two options for "First Girl." But... that all said, I'm way more interested in Yoshimoto personally, who is the next girl introduced after the first two, so... Well, whatever.
There's also a Date A Live element here, where there are apparent consequences to not dating the girls. DAL is a light novel series acting in the (by now, somewhat dead) "battle harem" mode, where the basic idea is a parody of visual novel dating sims, and the premise is that the protagonist must "date" super-powered girls to keep them calm, lest they destroy the planet. In 100kano, the god who infodumps the lore onto Rentaro warns him that rejecting any girl who falls in love with him will lead to a horrible death for that girl. We see no such thing here, and with the tone of (most of) the volume, it's hard to expect such a shift into black-comedy or melodrama. (I say "most of" because there's some scenes of bullying and child abuse in flashbacks for Yoshimoto, which come pretty hard out of leftfield lmao)
The thing about this manga is it isn't as overtly "sexy" like other Jump manga released through Ghost Ship. Hanazono is thick as fuck, and we keep seeing moles on her thighs to tickle dudes with that particular fetish (I could do without it, personally). Chapter covers tend to play the lewdness up a lot more, but the fanservice in the story itself is far more tame than e.g. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction. Chapter 5's cover at least makes up for it all.
It's hard to tell through the meme-translation (the god calling Rentaro a "zoomer," for example) the degree to which this is a parody of harem comedies. Inda is so over-the-top as a tsundere, on top of having such a sticc body compared to the utter (more like "udder" heh) THICCness of Hanazono that it seems r*tarded to even consider her. Like, Rentaro comes up with the four-leaf clovers and attacks his sincerity. Mans should be like "Aight, fuck it, I choose Hanazono. Simple as."
Something kinda funny to me: this manga originally runs in the seinen magazine, Young Jump. The rating for Ghost Ship's release is "Older Teen (15+)." Several Shōnen Jump+ manga get "Mature" ratings despite being geared toward younger demographics in Japan. Hell, pretty sure several manga from the print Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine are rated "Mature" through Ghost Ship as well, but I can't check because my cat is sitting on me and I don't want to bother him just to check my Yuuna-san and To Love-Ru volumes.
I'll tread lightly with the future of this manga. It's not as lewd as I'd like, but it's still funny and "comfy." But, Jesus Christ, the official translation is awful. Like, I'd be interested in reading further, but the main thing holding me back is I don't want to spend money on this localization. This is some fucking NIS America shit. I checked the credits at the back of the volume, and I see "Translation: M. Fulcrum" as well as "Adaptation: MF Mackenzie." I've never paid attention to this before, but I haven't been so offended by localization in a while. It feels like these credits are suggesting someone first translated the text from Japanese, then another person took a fat steaming shit all over the literal translation in order to make sure this reads like a fucking 4kids dub.
Unlike other manga, where I might dip my toes in with the first volume, then buy several subsequent volumes at once, I think for 100kano I'll just get Volume 2 on its own next. If it's likewise hard to read, I'll just see if I can get fan-translations elsewhere. Ghost Ship / Seven Seas get enough of my money anyway.
We can all agree the premise is interesting: a boy destined to meet 100 soulmates and date them all. However, the authors took said scenario full of possibilities and did close to nothing with it. Polygamy is a complex and fascinating subject, but the manga decides to ignore all nuance and conflict, so that everyone falls in love and gets along automatically and perfectly. If you look beyond the fact that the protagonist is dating the different girls at the same time, you will realize that all the characters, situations and plots, are just a bunch of generic cliches threaded together. It's as if they took 100 romantic mangas of the most poorly written variety, and just forcefully shove the girls in here, with the added consequence that all of them end up being completely shallow because now they don't really have a story to back them up. The manga is just a series of gags, alternating unnecessary self-referential jokes, jarringly absurd situations (UFOs, ghosts, magic potions), and the most artificial romantic scenes imaginable.
If I had to summarize it in a few words, I'd say this manga looks like a meme, like an internet post talking about waifus, rather than an actual story about some waifus. It would have been much better if the manga only had, you know, an actual semblance of a plot, or if it took the romance a little more seriously instead of just making fun of itself all the time. Or if the girls -God help us- had some personality. Or the main character. Something.
Gracias Nozawa sensei y Nakamura sensei, sois mis heroínas. Mis madres. Os quiero mucho.
I wasn't sure if I would like this book. We've seen plenty of harem manga where the male lead does not appreciate all the wonderful women in his life, but this is not that! Aijo really does care about every girl he is dating, like one would hope a sweet and hopeless romantic kind of guy would. This is also a comedy, and GOODNESS did I laugh multiple times while reading this! Very cute and wholesome and funny start to a series, and I am sincerely interested to see how this will all go down.
The 100 girlfriends who really really really really really love you by Rikito Nakamura is a high school romcom harem manga aimed at male teens. Summarized the plot is about a young high schooler named Aijou Rentarou who has had zero luck when it comes to love. After getting rejected for the 100th time he goes to a shrine and learns from the god of said shrine that he has 100 soul mates and that if he doesn't date them they will die but that little tidbit doesn't matter at all because this story deus ex machinas everything into working. In any other story, I would hate that but it works because the story is very self-aware and does not at all take itself seriously which is to its strength as a comedy. Honestly, I love this series but compared to the other books this one is quite lackluster reason is this series' strength is the cast, and because of that having so few of them does allow for singular characters to have more time on the page however it leads to much less time for the interactions which is what I feel is the best part of the series. Each of the characters has a trope that they are based on the most obvious from this one being Inda Karane who is a tsundere through and through both in actions and in her design. Personally, my recommendation for this series is to read up to the second novel because by that point the interactions that I talked about earlier shine through much more, and props to Nakamura for being able to juggle all these characters even after nineteen new characters each one still has a good amount of time on the page and none of the characters are ever dropped or forgotten due to new characters being introduced. In conclusion, this book was good it made me laugh a few times and while reading I was probably grinning the whole time, the character of Aijou Rentarou was extremely fun because of the insane lengths he would go to for the ones he loved. All in all, I would give the series a 5-star and this particular manga a 4-star I liked it but I can see how it's not everyone's cup of tea.
what would you do if you had to date 100 people? Aijo Rentaro just finished middle school with his 100th rejection. After consulting his generic nameless friend, Rentaro goes to a love shrine. Suddenly the god of that very shrine tells Rentaro that he will have 100 soulmates in high school! Rentaro finds his first 2 soulmates when he starts high school, when he can't decide between them the love god tell Rentaro horrible news. Rentaro must date all of his soulmates or else they will die! Will Reantaro be able to date all of his 100 soulmates, or will he leave 99 of them to die?
I love this goofy little book, it's funny and breaks the fourth wall a lot. It's very self aware which adds to it's humor. One thing i didn't expect is that it is both funny yet still very wholesome.
i'd recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh yet also get diabetes from its sweetness. it's a perfect balance of goofy and sweet.
I didn't know what to expect from picking up this series, but it's really cute! Unlike many other romcoms where the MCs are either dull or total jerks but the girls still unreasonably love them, Rentaro is a legit stand-up guy who is a hopeless romantic with horrible dating luck... until now!
The series is a very self-aware parody of the harem genre as a god accidentally fated Rentaro not with 1 soulmate, but an accounting error of 100 soulmates! I'm currently reading volume 2 and he's met five girls so far each with their own unique personalities and he loves them individually. And it's also nice to see how the girls interact with each other too!
I see that there are a lot of volumes released already, so I'm curious to see how the series will handle all of these new characters, make them unique, and hopefully not sideline the current cast too much.
So far it's a really cute and funny series, and I'm looking forward to reading more!
I normally hate harem manga, but this one is actually really good. For starters, it actually goes all the way with the harem and second it's doesn't take itself too seriously. I actually laughed out loud on many occasions, and that's rare for me to do in most manga. I really like the art and characters, most of the times harem characters are often one note. Yeah you still get the archetypes like tsundure, but they're not annoying in my opinion and are really enjoyable to read. Even the ecchi doesn't get on my nerves which I really can't stand so I highly recommend this series to others you don't like pervy harem manga. I think I'm going to keep reading this series for the foreseeable future. I just hope that it doesn't get bad as I go along further.
I'm re-reading The 100 GFs again because it's so good. It's hilarious, Rentarou is literally the greatest guy (you can't tell me I'm wrong). All of the girlfriends in this series are fun and interesting and I love the different theories about new girls. I also just love how much of a family they are? Like they genuinely come to love one another just as much as they love Rentarou and he just cares about them all so much.
Also it's a funny romance gag manga. Yes, there is fan service (like a lot) but honestly past that it's a really fun series.
This was such a random buy, to be honest the cover made me grab it, they are both so adorable how could I not? The only thing I really knew to expect was ecchi and harem based series which it undoubtedly is but it was rather funny and rather cute in places, absolutely something I'd enjoy reading! Plus a few fourth wall breaks, not sure about them but a few of them were quite well placed. I shall reserve judgment of the series depending on the next few volumes!
This is just adorable. But we're up to 3 girls? How many girls will be added to the harem, now, while this volume was pretty tame for the Ghost Ship imprint, however, being that this IS under the Ghost Ship imprint,I think we are in for some "smexy times" as a wise man once said.
This was uh....very different from what I'm used to reading. I enjoyed it. The story is about a guy who essentially has a bunch of girlfriends. I have no idea where this story will lead in the end but I'm here for it haha. I love the girls so far. They seem super understanding and okay with the polyamory. I like that this manga dives into the idea. Very interesting to see.
This manga was a pretty good read. It was a funny wholesome harem with ofc a few dirty jokes here and there but it has a pretty good storyline so far. It’s simple and easy to follow and they even have stories behind some of the characters to make you be able to feel the characters emotions. Definitely can’t wait to read the next book to know what happens next
I remember buying this on a whim, simply for the concept sounding outlandish and funny. I was not wrong in that assumption, but I was not disappointed either. One boy, and up to 100 girlfriends... I expected it to be completely dumb to read and trade in the volume.
Now? I need the next and the following. I'm looking forward to this story...
It was really enjoyable in a lot of ways if you like cheesy, high school romance. It can feel a bit overly sexual at times, so that’s not my favorite. It also feels like it tries a little too hard to be relevant by trying to be meta and using some more Gen Z terms.
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really etc etc etc... unfortunately, this is a parody series and it's semi-hilarious at points because I love a good fourth wall break so I'll probably keep this one around for a bit.
…I love this already. It’s such a batshit insane and stupid premise and it knows that not taking itself seriously at all. Super funny and I like all the girls already.
Holy tropes, Batman! A wacky harem with a barely-there fourth wall and more cute girls than you can shake a stick at! Plus, they're all poly instead of competing.
