A hot-blooded romantic cosplay comedy begins when an otaku meets a girl who dresses up as his favorite manga character. This sexy manga series comes recommended by Eiichiro Oda (creator of One Piece )--and don't miss the anime, coming soon!

“I have no interest in real girls!” So claims Okumura, the president of the school’s manga club. He’s your typical otaku, obsessed with a sexy (fictional) 2D manga character known as Liliel. Then the new school year starts, and a (real!) 3D girl named Lilysa whose passion is cosplay joins the club. Lilysa convinces Okumura to become her photographer–and guess who her favorite manga character is? Not only that, but Lilysa is into modeling the fetishy stuff! The boundaries between 2D and 3D start to blur as this hot-blooded romantic comedy unfolds.

Okumura’s life has given him a raw deal when it comes to women, so he’s totally happy to sequester himself in the manga club with Liliel, his 2D waifu. But new member Lilysa loves Liliel just as much and she’s hungry to cosplay her in the most fetish-y way possible. Lines are about to blur for Okumura and he might be a little more invested in real life than he thinks…

If you read My Dress-Up Darling and thought, “This could be horned up some”, well, bounce, don’t jiggle, to your local bookstore for a copy of this story, which is thirstier than a salt mine in the Sahara desert.

And it actually isn’t a bad little story. If you’re going to justify your book being as horny as manga from 20 years ago (give or take), you could do a lot worse than have the story your characters are obsessed with BE a horny manga from 20 years ago (give or take).

It’s basically a rom-com with lots of panty shots and some unbelievably daft costumes and, yep, that totally checks out. Most of this, including the costuming, is no worse than anything Marin does in her own title, but this one just goes a bit further and doesn’t quite have the pure heart of that story.

Okumura is mercifully not a misogynist, he’s just been left to his own devices or demeaned by many women over the years (the way his mom leaves him is a real laugh out loud moment). Instead of raging, he just puts his faith in a girl who doesn’t exist and therefore can’t be anything but perfect.

In fact, once the over-enthusiastic Lilysa shows up at the manga club, it turns out the two of them get along like peas in a pod. Thus begins a story of cosplay and photography that starts to get complicated super fast when one character is too naive to realize they’re falling in love and the other made a (possibly ill-advised) promise to be a gentleman. And is too naive to realize he’s falling in love.

And, hey, it isn’t bad. The most preposterous part is easily the costumes of Liliel and how dead set Lilysa is to wear them, not to mention her prodigious sewing chops. She’s clearly an idealized partner for this sort of story, the hot girl who wants to wear the smuttiest costumes, but they at least give her a justification, thin as it is (matches the outfits).

Naturally they decide to stretch this even further by introducing Okumura’s childhood friend, whom he saved from teasing before he became a 2D monk and has loved him ever since (this turns out to be a boon as it gets her out of a molesting by a gross producer that the story mercifully sidesteps).

She gets dragged into the whole thing, but also exists to cause friction and put him in a good light and, yes, of course she’s a model, but she has a lot of scrutiny for how inane this all is. Her indignation over the group cosplay coming up is quite valid, but she’s too caught up in the chance to impress Okumura to resist. It’s all basic rom-com nonsense with a hearty ecchi schmear.

Given modern sensibilities, it’s not hard to see why this is out under a mature audiences label, but I was expecting far worse than that delivers (thankfully, I might add). Yeah, some of it is uncomfortable, but it’s not the main part of the story, and I do think there’s a decent narrative here.

There are a couple of panels of bare teenager breasts, which, again, manga’s done a lot worse over the years, so judge for yourself. Some unintended character arousal or falling over stuff and into things/people, but I guarantee outside the naked part it’s no worse than many harem books.

I’ve read manga for a long time and, in addition to drawn teenager boobs not doing it for me, I’ve also survived reading both the Battle Royale manga and Gunsmith Cats, but you have to make your own judgement calls there. Seriously, I think the series-within-a-series in Genshiken was more questionable.

Still, for a book that could be nothing more than an excuse to draw sexy girls (and there’s a buttload of that, as it were), it does have a rather impure heart at its core and a little solid comedy besides (that bag check gag has the perfect set-up and delivery).

3 stars - I mean, adjust upwards if you’re super into this sort of thing. I was morbidly curious about this, as, yeah, books about cosplay are pretty interesting, and I wasn’t nearly as mortified as I thought I would be (the e-reader is a help that way). Plus, the kids are alright, y’know? I may very well snag a second volume, so there you go.

I've discovered a new guilty pleasure manga. This is the sort of title that needs to be read privately.

The story is basically a manga in the school life genre. It revolves around the activities of a high school manga research club and the relationship between a senpai (senior) and a kohai (junior) as they pursue their love for a manga character with cosplay.

Is it good? It's a niche series that might be an acquired taste for most.

Another manga series I found and read on MangaPlus, this is a sexy, fun read, and I enjoyed it and will be continuing, so let's go and Keep on Reading.

I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.

I hate VIZ so much that my complaints leak into manga distributed by other companies! 2.5 Dimensional Seduction runs on Shueisha's digital Shōnen Jump+ service, perhaps best know as the home of Spy x Family, which, incidentally, VIZ "allows" under their own SJ label. This manga stands alongside World's End Harem as something VIZ refused to publish simply because they don't want ecchi with their name on it anymore (unless it's BL...). Compare also Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, which ran in the print magazine for Weekly Shōnen Jump, but which got shafted while VIZ picked up other licenses, including BokuBen, which is pretty sexy, but apparently chaste enough for the Puritans at VIZ. So, Seven Seas, god bless them, started this Ghost Ship imprint some years ago, to publish Yuuna, World's End Harem, the somewhat-older To Love-Ru, and now this series (and the newer Ayakashi Triangle, which was infamously dropped when VIZ refused to keep publishing digital-only volumes despite the series having run in Weekly Jump at the time (it has since moved to Jump+ as well)).

Story-wise, this is kind of the same shit as Sono Bisque Doll, just generally sexier, and more overtly "shōnen." Our hero here is an actual manga otaku, obsessed with a character Liliel, to the point of shunning "3D" girls in general, which may or may not have to do with being rejected in the past (it's glossed over, but I wouldn't be surprised if it comes back up later). The main girl is "nerdier" than Kitagawa Marin, in terms of surface; not sure whether I'd say this is "more" or "less" pandering, as it's probably kind of more "realistic" to have teen boys fantasize about a cute kouhai who secretly has an insane body and a fetishistic temperament for 2D sexiness, rather than what I might say is more "unrealistic" with the gyaru of Bisque. But it hardly matters, since the back half of this volume introduces a junior model as another possible love interest, being a bit more in the realm of "fantasy"... or, it would be, if she wasn't a childhood friend, and thus destined not to get with the MC (T-T).

The comedy here is quite alright. The manga is probably "carried" harder by the ecchi scenes, as is to be expected, though of course many of them are a part of the humor anyway. Hashimoto isn't the greatest artist, and this is mostly seen in how the girls' legs sometimes look wonky as fuck. He's pretty good at drawing boobs, but kind of terrible at drawing nipples, which is especially funny to me because I'd always had problems doodling boobs as a kid, and spontaneously learned I could draw pretty nice asses earlier this year, but while my boobs have been improving my nipples pretty much always look weird (drawn boobs/nipples; I don't really have boobs myself, and my nipples just look like normal male nipples...). On that note as well, Hashimoto is pretty good at drawing booty, but also kind of specifically "butts of girls who are bent over." I think the actual thing is that he's good at drawing standing butts with the way Asian pelvises tilt, but I'm still personally too used to Caucasian pelvic tilts and how they form butts, so Japanese body-types might sometimes still deceive me as being "pancake-like" - but now that I think about it, it's been a good while since I've seen any JAV, in which case I usually seek out butt-centric gravure, kind of for the relative "novelty" of it (there's some fisheye camera stuff that looks pretty good...). Anyway, I do get the sense that Hashimoto likes booty more than the average tit-focused mangaka, so I'm looking forward to future volumes.

I was tempted to prematurely add this to my Shelf for "harem" manga, but I don't actually know if other girls will be introduced yet.

A more ecchi version of Dress Up Darling but not terrible.

Basically this dude is in love with 2D girls. For normal people out there who have no clue what I mean, 2d girls are basically ones in Manga/anime. He thinks they are sexy and 3D girls (Real girls) can't match up. That is until one day a girl joins his Manga group and shows her love for these "sexy" girls and wants to cosplay as these girls and get her photo taken. This leads to a weird relationship for the two.

It's pretty funny, I'll give it that. It has cute moments too, some even sexy moments. The main girl is cute too which helps, though I find her cuter without the cosplay funny enough. But this is heavy heavy fan service. Panty shots, boob shots, ass shots, ect... And it does feel a bit icky. But it's still entertaining mostly because of the two leads. When they introduce a third, not too sure how I feel about the "I'm gorgeous but in love with the loser because....PLOT" Type thing but we'll see.

A 3 out of 5. Maybe even 3.5. But can't push it to a 4 yet.

This was a lot of fun, though the censorship on Manga PLUS is just hilariously bad. I mean, sorry, but you have an ecchi manga and you just censor EVERYTHING. I could understand some boobs or other bits, but bras? Bikinis? Butts being shown just a bit too much? Nah.
But the story was fun and Lilysa was just adorable, I love how much she loves cosplay and really goes into character when she does so. She is enthusiastic and fun. And her cosplays are AMAZING. I wouldn't mind her making me one. Haha. She reminds me of Oono Kanako from Genshiken, which makes me happy as I really liked Oono.
Not sure how I feel about the new girl/the childhood friend who wants more but our MC is clearly into 2D. I hope she tempers her mood down and just has fun.

I love this. I know some people are saying it's just My Dress up darling but with to much fan service, to which I say, no, it's the perfect amount of fan service for this story. Second, I find the guys attitude totally understandable. I know volume 2 is out, and I will grab it soon, and hope for a lot more in this series.

J’avais peur qu’on tombe dans le too much quoi.

Et ça ça me plaît!

The story is interesting, but the characters all lack depth. At least in the first volume. It was a quick read, and had a good amount of fan service for the target audience. When I read that Eiichiro Oda recommended it, I figured I’d give the series a shot.

The title says a lot about the series. A high school otaku dude says he has no feelings for any real world women, and he’s only got the hots for his manga/anime waifu. A high school girl feels that dressing scantily like manga and anime characters is empowering and it’s her dream to be a cosplayer. She joins the manga club and asks dude to be her photographer and cosplays as — you guessed it — his waifu…
The story seemed like it was going in one clear direction until they introduced another girl from dudes past, and the volume sort of changes directions as this one-dude manga club becomes a three person cosplay club. Where the photographer is the 2D manga waifu loving dude, who certainly has no feelings for the two 3D women…

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Solid 3 stars for me

I enjoyed it. Will probably check the next few volumes out… The story left off at an odd cliff hanger and I found myself wanting to see where this story ends up

The whole point is that our MC doesn’t fall for real girls and he’s falling for the main girl within this first volume, then she low key starts to fall for him too. Literally my least favorite trope because they probably aren’t going to tell each other any time soon. Then we immediately get the second girl who is generic childhood friend. We hitting all the tropes lol. I will say I like the effort they did with attention to detail on the outfits and why people would care about it. I’m sure cosplay fans would eat that part up. I’ve heard this being compared to My Dress-up darling and I see it but it’s not much of a comparison. Also why does it feel like there are two artists here? Like when the girls undress or change it looks different. So weird.

I think many people miss the point of this manga due to the fan service and it looking like complete ecchi bait. This is a story about understanding your passions and also understanding other people's reason for enjoying the same passion in a different way. Okumura is much better than most harem MCs in my opinion, he's not given as a loser type, he's just as nerdy as the girls he hangs around with. As the story progresses and steers away from the harem aspect, it becomes clear that this is a story of following your passions.

Very ‘My Dress-up Darling’-esque… you’ve got the MC with trauma, cosplay, and way more smut than the aforementioned series haha. It’s definitely pretty goofy and over-the-top, but I had a decent enough time with the first volume - it helps that all the characters have some dimension to them (haha see what I did there) as well. I’m kinda interested to see how the MC’s trauma from various women in his life ends up affecting the story later.

A goofier, more comedic manga ala My Dress Up Darling with more ecchiness and less the ins and outs of making costumes. There is some panels where the making of a costume is shown but not on the scale of MDUD. My only gripe is the protagonist can be annoying, but the girls are great! A second tier MDUD, but very good all the same.

***not for younger readers***

I didn't hate it, but there wasn't a super strong plot line, basically fan service. It's like My Dress up Darling without the plot, just sexy cosplay in every chapter.

I don't know what the rest of the series holds but the arts decent, and there were some funny moments so I will continue on.

3.5★ - so ridiculous and trashy, but strangely addicting!! I am liking okumura and lilysa's relationship so far, though I'm not that into love triangles so the entrance of the childhood-friend-turned-model is a little meh for me. I think because this leans so hard into the ridiculousness and comedy, the fan service ends up working for it. XD

Imagine My Dress-Up Darling without the charm or humour or anything that makes that series great. Even the fan service is bland and that’s pretty much all this manga’s got going for it.

One of the few 2024 anime series I decided to collect. Is actually a fairly wholesome series as Ririsa (or Lilysa) waits until she is 15 to start cosplaying after being told so by veteran cosplayers, one of whom actually becomes a teacher and manga club advisor, and later on they agree to read adult doujin when 18 on advice of the student council. Ririsa and Okumura are motivated by their pure love for the character Liliel although some hints of romance develop. The series goes on to focus on cosplaying itself rather than the romantic comedy being the focus at far I’ve read but still delivers cultured fan service which makes sense given the subject matter (and title of course) but which was mostly censored in the anime.
