Going For 55 : Rangers' Journey Back To The Top Of Scottish Football

Rate this book
In February 2012, Rangers faced an uncertain future and fans feared for their club as a Scottish institution was plunged into crisis. Just months later, Rangers would start out on what those supporters christened 'The Journey' as they attempted to make their way back to the top of the game from the Third Division. The years that followed were amongst the most tumultuous and controversial in the club's illustrious history as financial results became as important and noteworthy as football ones. Through it all, Rangers supporters followed near and far. In May 2021, Rangers completed their journey as Steven Gerrard's side were crowned Premiership champions.

Going for 55 tells the story of the campaign, giving insight and offering analysis into how Gerrard revolutionised the club and restored Rangers to their place at the top of Scottish football. With interviews from the money men who funded the rebuilding job, the staff and players that made the dream a reality and those in the press that saw history being made, this is a sporting tale like no other.

A read only for diehard Rangers fans. The narrative is very scattergun and repetitive. For such an exciting and important season as this one was For the mighty Glasgow Rangers, this book made it appear a bit dull.

‘Going For 55’ charts the story of the Rangers’ historic 55th title win, starting around March 2015 and finishing 6 years later in May 2021 with trophy day.

For the most part, it was an enjoyable read and I eventually got into the format with each chapter assessing a separate month of the 2020/2021 season.

The only real negatives I have were that there seemed to be a fair bit of repetition and the narrative was a bit messy, with key characters seemingly shoehorned in at certain points.

That being said, it is the authors debut book and it has been written fairly quickly given the subject matter so the above downsides are fully understandable.

I sit here having just finished reading the book and it is now only 30 minutes until kick-off in the first league match of the season so good timing on my part I think! It’s time to say goodbye and close the book on 55… here’s to 56! 😊

Interesting enough book looking at Rangers historic 55th title winning season, both on the field and in the board room.
Wish there was more of a focus on each chapter as it does seem a bit random at points, for example I think it would have been interesting to read about Jame Tavernier progression as captain.
