Perched atop its majestic pine of old, this strange gemstone tree-topper has sat for untold millennia, shining its joyful and life-giving light over the small hamlet of Christmas Town that surrounds it. Its radiant light, a symbol of peace and hope to all, now wane and dimming.
While far to the north, hidden in the gloom of a mountain-top cave, the vile creature known as the Grinch has awakened. Foul, mean, and a real rotter, this king of sinful sots possesses a small heart and a hatred for the holidays above all things.
Now, with only days left before Christmas Eve, a sour-sweet wind blows across the land, spreading a vile taint that threatens the yearly tradition that sees Lord Claus travel the realm delivering cheer and good faith to the masses.
With the fate of Christmas and peace in the realm resting upon a knife’s edge, a group of brave adventurers gathers to embark on a heroic quest to fight back the darkness and save the holidays from The Doom That Came to Christmas Town…
The Doom that Came to Christmas Town is surprisingly delightful and full of set pieces that should make for a few thrilling sessions.
The Yule Light is dying and it's up to a rag-tag group of adventurers to save the spirit of Christmas from the Grinch. The module is a loveletter to classic Christmas media and it checks almost all of the boxes. The characters from the Rankin & Bass stop-motion movies make appearances. The Grinch is the villain. There's a set-piece encounter based around A Christmas Story with the shooting out of eyes as a central mechanic.
One can almost picture the glee with which the brain storming sessions must have been conducted!
In addition to being just plain fun, it's also a decent DCC module. It definitely leans more into the gonzo side of DCC and you'll want your tongue firmly in cheek as you play it, but it's still DCC gameplay. There are 3 dungeon crawls in this module (Though experiencing every encounter is by no means required) and a pair of hand-out puzzles that should give the players plenty to play with and change the combat-heavy pace of most DCC modules. Be warned: One of the puzzles is essentially MineSweeper and I can see the havoc caused by accidentally giving an incorrect number. So, make sure you're giving them the correct clue as they move or everything might implode.
There's a full cast of pregenerated characters to use which are also, of course, pulled from Christmas movies. You can play Cindy Lou Who as a dual-wielding halfling warrior! The module was exactly the uplifting silliness needed at the end of 2020.
Goofy fun for the holidays. The CBS Specialness can't be overlooked if you are a child of the 70. Going to guess the lower stars are from those looking for a more serious adventure?
