The Saloon Lawyer

Rate this book
Morgan was meeting with an important client in his well-appointed law office in San Antonio when his clerk tapped on the door and entered without waiting for a reply.Morgan didn’t mind as he expected Jim Cooper had a good reason for the interruption. Jim simply handed him a telegram then left the bigger office. After he closed the door, Morgan ignored his client and opened the envelope. The message was from the Kerr County sheriff.Sheriff J.R. Brown reported that Morgan’s older brother had been killed by one of the working girls in his saloon. Despite many witnesses to the shooting, the sheriff had yet to apprehend her.Morgan excused himself, then left the client to tell his clerk that he’d be going to Kerrville in the morning. When he arrived, he’d give them a lesson on the true meaning of justice.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

A decent little western, some romance, some action. A lawyer comes to take over his brother's tavern and is a better man then proceeds to do every good deed in 40 miles, saving a widow's ranch, breaking up a crime gang, straightening up a crooked sheriff, etc etc. A bit too light weight and fanciful for my western tastes, but not bad.

An entertaining light read. A few quibbles;

1. The author refers several times to legal "precedence", when he means "precedents".

2. No priest would ever allow two people to listen to each others' confessions.

3. The nuptial Mass would have been after the exchange if wedding vows, not before.

Not his best work

Aside from all the typos, the story line wasn't believable either. Boring descriptions, and too much religion injected into it. Have read dozens of Mr petits books, and this is certainly not his usual production.

My country good and the bad I'll stand by it!!!

After I finish reading this I found that there was A tremendous Amount of Myself in this story. I spent 23 years in the navy broke my back and was medically just charged When I was in and came back from Vietnam I got spit on jail and then Was released I find that The younger generation Does not have the same Understanding Of a work ethic That I grew up with on a farm. Today most of the children have no idea about working hard. Now I find that they all want a position Not a job. The authors last comment About our state of the nation Brought me to tears I have read all of his works. I find that They all have the same theme Equality Justice, and Compassion. I love these books I have read them all!!! And my personal thank you to the author. Bruce weaver McKinney USN retired

A newer Kindle western, "The Saloon Lawyer" (2021) begins when a mean pimp is killed by one of his abused hookers and then the pimp's brother comes to settle the estate, renovate and take over operating the brothel/saloon. This brother is basically just the best, nicest guy and all the hookers with hearts of gold are just the sweetest ladies around. The superhero brother is not only an accomplished lawyer and now saloon owner but a Captain in the Texas Rangers; a lonely widow tells us "he was the most masculine example of manhood she'd ever met" (eyeroll).

Petit repeats a lot of ideas and narratives in this long book as characters explain backstories to other characters multiple times, we witness scenes that are then explained to characters who weren't there, and feelings are expressed to various characters in long-form monologues over and over.

The protagonist, a competent gunman and swoon-inducing widower, already has piles and piles of money so he works as a lawyer for free, he gives away houses to people who need them, and sets up his five Ranger buddies with the five former hookers in his saloon. They all get married and they are totally in love, like, for real, we're told many times, it's for real, these five on five, perfect matches for each other, totes in love, for real.

Verdict: A forgettable easy long read. More of a western daydream with lots of obfuscating comments (inside joke), logistical narrative for travel and communication, monologuing about lust and the abuse of hookers, kidspeak conversations with little kids about cringeworthy adult topics, and romantic emotive expressions. The long-winded pete-and-repeat style made me realize "The Saloon Lawyer" didn't have an editor.

Very seldom does C. J Petit author less than a very good book. Only one of his previous books, I can't remember the name, was absolutely bad.
The Saloon Lawyer was not quite that bad, I did manage to read about seventy five percent before pitching it.

One
This book, my impression, it took two day and consultation of every character to figure out the time of day, then the hero would later change that.

Two
I realize that an author must use "detail" as filler, "The Saloon Lawyer" is almost nothing but filler.

Three
Almost every author has their "standby" in all their books. I. E The great Louie L, in almost every bool, the hero got shot and made an unbelievable recovery. Mr Petit has a very knowable background in guns of the area and makes sure it is in almost all his books but very seldom get used.

Just Okay!

The Saloon Lawyer is a western that has a decent plot with mostly likable characters but, on the other hand, its length at 646 pages, is much longer than it needed to be and much of the story line is pretty predictable. Overall, good enough to finish but not a book I’d recommend highly.

interesting premise

The title Saloon Lawyer roped me in. Morgan is a Texas Ranger and a lawyer who inherits his no-good brother’s saloon and brothel. He sets out to right the past wrongs of his brother, while fighting crime and helping widows. It is a very interesting premise.
Unfortunately this is not the book for me. A strong editor could have tightened the writing and quickened the pace. The female characters were flat. The author does know a lot about guns of the era.

I really wanted to like this book. It appealed to me as a simple western story that I could read between more serious works.
Our hero, a lawyer and a Texas Ranger, gets a message that his brother has been shot to death in his own saloon in another town, so the hero goes there to administer justice to the evil doers. Simple story. Entertaining...mostly. The hero is a good man, morally upright, honest even for a Texas lawyer, but too good. I think the author forgot that 1800s Texas is not 2000s socially just, as far as it goes anyway. This man has the wisdom, experience of a 50 year old. He sounds like a 50 yr. old, but we find out he is in his mid thirties. I don't believe it.
C J Petit apparently self publishes these stories, which I suppose means he doesn't have an editor to cut the fat. And fat there is in abundance in this book. The author is battling cancer so I don't want to be picking on him, but he has done some things in this book that bother me.
There are a lot of repeated conversations wherein character A has a conversation with character B, then either A or B goes to character C and repeats almost verbatim that conversation. The author could have just said Character A related the details of his conversation with character B to character C, then continued the scene with C, or moved on to some other part of the story. In fairness, the author did do some of that with some conversations, but not enough. I don't think a commercial book company would want to pay him per word.
The author's Catholic sensibilities are very present in this story, and I find a couple of curious incidents here. Our hero has to (justifiably) shoot four men. Then he goes to Mass, takes communion, but does not go to confession. Later in the story when he and his fiancée go to the Priest for their pre-wedding confession, the Priest tells him he doesn't want to hear about the men he has killed. Big WTF moment for me there.
And then then we also get a little Catholic retribution as well, when in the latter part of the story, we are told that a woman who had been performing abortions on the saloon prostitutes is herself murdered and apparently everyone thinks that is fine, she deserved it. God will ignore that one. Mr. Petit do you really think killing abortionists is OK? Does one murder really justify another?
The murder of the abortionist is apparently done by two brothers of one of the saloon prostitutes, but that particular girl had not had an abortion.
The most fat in this story begins just after the hero proposes marriage to the widow whose ranch he saved from the evil ranch thieves. The story should have ended with the proposal and acceptance of marriage, and that would have been a fine ending. But the author decided that we had to have all the details of the marriage and moving house etc. to the point where I just stopped reading. It all became a bit too much. I had put the book aside once before, but gave it another look, hoping it might still turn out to be the book I wanted. I think Mr. Petit can tell a good story. He has written a lot of them. I intend to read at least two his others: The Photographer, and Rusty and Bug. I just hope he hasn't treated all of his writing as so precious that nothing need be cut.

I have had the opportunity to follow Mr. Petit throughout most of his journeys of old American western folklore extravaganzas, but he certainly goes above and beyond with this compassionate storytelling masterpiece! "The Saloon Keeper" is unsurpassed in his many successful portrayals of unending exciting, and always heartwarming, episodes of realistic western adventures of gunfighting and descriptive renditions of how I often perceived our old American West was finally settled!

Most definitely another five star masterpiece by the master of unending western folklore adventures, and I certainly hate to see this compelling western masterpiece to be Mr. Petit's final ralease, after so many outstandingly portrayals of unending pleasurable experiences! Of outstanding 80 realistic one has to be his most compelling release of all! No slowdowns throughout the entire book as "The Saloon Lawyer," and his crew of supporters pull no punches in their ongoing quest to bring justice to those responsible for their own misdeeds!
Mr. Petit's successful descriptive storylines certainly will appease anyone's desired expectations, as no stone is left unturned, when this group of men and women, go above and beyond in their quest for full fledged justice! Too, the character selections are unsurpassed in their commanding assignments from beginning to end, when they are called upon to assist in bringing peace and tranquility to their beloved area of responsibility!
Most definitely recommend this compassionately motivated story to all readers, as I assure all of you, regardless of you, regardless of your reading pleasure, to be completely engrossed from beginning to end!
There aren't any dull moments throughout this compelling western masterpiece from cover to cover, and yes even you non-western enthusiasts will find yourselves completely mesmerized throughout this compassionately motivated success story of unending adventures! Try it! I assure you to be completely involved within the very first few pages of this compelling western masterpiece!!!😃

Thank you C.J.!!!!!

I AM a 71yr. Old woman who shares your Feb.8th birthday. Your wonderful stories have been immensely helpful to me over the.last 5yrs.. I suffered lung cancer, surgery to remove part of my left lung and then chemotherapy. I also have fibromyalgia, COPD for which I have been hospitalized several times. I fell and broke my right hip on Feb. 9th 2020. WITH the aid of an excellent surgeon my hip healed and I have just the slightest limp. I am still cancer free, THANK THE LORD!!! Unfortunately I was never able to regain my strength, energy, and vitality which led to my greatest pain of all---my dearly loved husband left me for another woman because I wasn't as much fun and he didn't like having to help me with cooking, the house work, etc.. we loved to travel but it was too much trouble for him to drag my oxygen with us. He is seven years younger than I and thankfully healthy. I was a hair dresser for 50 yrs.. I never made a lot of money but I helped a lot of people. My only income is $972 per month in Soc. Sec..my husband has an income of $5000 per month. I have been living in limbo since he left, hoping for a fair and equitable divorce settlement so I don't have to go on welfare and will be able to keep my home (mine before Iwe married)..

I only share this with you because you have suffered so very much. i hope the writing of your books (I have read ALL of them) provided you with enough distraction and comfort to ease your suffering as they have mine. I will be forever greatful for the many, many hours of reading pleasure and the distraction that has helped to keep my mind occupied during this most trying period of my life. I will be praying for your health and that you will have time to write many more books

I would recommend C.J.'s books to anyone who enjoys a good, clean exciting story with a touch of romance and a lot of action!

May the Lord Bless and Keep you in his care.

I was thrilled to see an announcement about this book. I had ceased looking for new books at a time when you were considering stopping writing...I think over a Christmas holiday. Now I see that I am behind and have missed several of your outstanding books. You are a prolific writer and can tell a story with depth and quality that it is rare in any mode. The Saloon Lawyer was both a story of a lawyer coping with his own personal issues but remains sensitive to the need and concerns of others. He finds romance while pursuing justice.
I set aside everything I am doing when I receive one of your books. I look forward to reviewing the list of books that I have missed.
I am an educator and have taught for many years. I am retiring this month at the age of 82. I am coping with health problems and multiple changes in my profession associated with problems revealed during the pandemic.
While I will no longer be teaching, I will continue reading.
I have a tee shirt that reads, "I am Retired. Reading books is my job."

Like every one of Chris Petit's books, that I have read in the past, which is all of them, I found that once again Chris has a unique story plot that draws you in from the very beginning. His God given gift to have each book stand alone and yet bring in the elements of good triumphing over evil, love and respect for God while he keeps the reader both completely interested and entertained, never wanting the book to end. How he came up with the lawyer running a saloon while practicing law out of the back room and making it work is just great. I can absolutely recommend this book to everyone, but there again I can recommend EVERY book he has written to everyone.

I was saddened to see in the Epilogue that this may well be his last book. He is my favorite author on Amazon whose new works I eagerly look forward to. I can only hope that his health improves after a break and he resumes his writing. I know I am not alone in hoping for more C.J. Petit books. May God bless this gifted author.

THE SALOON LAWYER by author C.J. Petit that is about a man named Morgan who arrives in town of Kerryville after leaving his law practice in San Antonio after receiving a letter from the Kerry County Sheriff regarding the death of his brother.

Morgan begins his own investigation as he’s not satisfied with the progress in locating his brother’s alleged killer, and decides to take up residency in town in the local saloon, which seems to be a reasonable decision, but what is surprising is that he decides to combine his residency and his profession as a lawyer in the same building, which is the saloon.

Can Morgan find out the truth regarding the death of his brother, and will he continue his life and practice in the saloon since he’s formed friendship with the ladies he’s grown attached to that were employees at the establishment before his arrival?

Enjoyable story by the author that has the unusual twist of the living situation of the lead character that makes this more interesting than it might’ve been otherwise.

My only disappointment in C.J's books was the authors notes at the end of this one

I stumbled on the books by C. J. Petit about a year ago. I have read every one in order and loved them all. I am constantly checking to see if the next one has published yet. It's a big disappointment that there won t be a number 81 but I get it. I've dreaded this day for awhile. The authors notes in this book explain a lot and are actually what I enjoyed about the books. It has been a bit of an escape from the headlines of the day and a pleasure to read about decent people living a good life in a great country. I found the typos to be like an inside joke between the author and his readers - more endearing than annoying. Thank you for the hours of entertainment Mr. Petit.

I enjoyed this book so much! I didn't expect to either, since I don't usually read westerns, but this one was exciting, and romantic.
There was plenty of diversity in the characters, so they were interesting too.
If I were to criticize anything it would be the lack of description given the lead character, Morg. I could never get a picture of him in my mind, just that he was tall, very tall.
I would definitely read another book by this author, especially a western. A lot of detail went into the description of the guns used or purchased by Morg, which I kind of skimmed over though.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
I appreciate that fact that there was no foul language either.

Thank you so much

Sometime in 2018, while looking for something new to read, I ran across one of your books. I do not normally read western but enjoyed the story, the writing style, the characters, and the humanity of the story. I immediately went looking for more and was thrilled to find many to choose from, let me just say, I quickly read all there were and have since read each one as it was released. I have looked forward to each one and not been disappointed. I am sad that this is the last but wanted to say thank you for writing them. They are a bright spot in the realms of informative, non-threatening novels available.

Lawyer, ranger and saloon ewner

I check monthly to see if Mr. Petit has a new book. I Can says I wasn't. I canmuch of a western fan until I stared reading his books. I find the plots interesting and with just of bit of twist and turns. I can't wait to see how each incident will turn out. The hero is smart and so are women. The women are shown to have intelligences and bravery. I can say I don't write good reviews.. If you are a Petit fan, you won't be disappointed. I wasn't. Keep writing Mr. Petit and I will keep watching and reading.

I’ve read all 80…

I’ve read all 80 books as soon as they come out. They are all great reads and there are no exceptions. This one is about a lawyer, Texas ranger and saloon owner. It captures you fast and it’s hard to put down as the story twists and turns and then eloquently falls into place. It’s just the way he writes. He pulls you into his story.

I was sad to read his notes at the end that this may well be his last book, and if you read his bio, it will make sense why. God bless you Chris….

Possibly the best book that he has written

I have had the privilege of reading all of CJ PETIT'S books, many of them 2-3 times. This book which he says is his last just reads so well from beginning to end. That he has written a new book every three weeks is almost unheard of, but compared to many other authors he is as good or better than the late Louie L'Amour. I can understand why he wants to slow down but at 77 I am NOT ready for him to stop writing!! Thank you for providing me so many great and well written stories- Jim MacNaughton, Canada

Excellent and exciting book

I have read every book of Mr. Petit and enjoyed all of them. He tells a good story with characters that always do the right thing and seek justice. I hope this wasn't his last book. I have been amazed that he could write a book as fast as he did. I would find myself checking kindle for a new book every few weeks. If this was your last book, thank you for so many enjoyable hours of reading and going back to times when right was expected and wrong was corrected. Also, thank you for the years you served in the Air Force .

Another Classic C.J. Petit story of the Old West

I enjoyed this story of strong honorable men and women especially as it involved Texas Rangers as they should be and a lawyer who respects all people and lives to make things better. It was unusual 'cause no bad guys died until half over then we got the usual vivid anatomic description of what happens after a large caliber bullet completes its stated purpose. I have enjoyed
C.Js books all through the Covid Lockdown and will forever thank this fine honorable American Patriot.

This book met all the author's goals; good wins over evil, an exciting story and escape fiction.

I stopped reading another book and immediately downloaded this book upon being notified of the new Petit novel. I was saddened to read the author's note that this will be his last novel. I have loved reading them all and these stories helped keep my mind occupied during my husband's short illness and subsequent death. Thank you Chris and best of luck to you. You should be very proud of your work through all of your adversity...

I've read them all.

At first I was aware of all the errors, then as you progressed and the errors were fewer. I then became aware that you had great plots and good characters. I really liked all of your books. The word "popped" became sort of a byword but I'm glad you stopped using it as much in your later books. I certainly am not being critical of your books because as a writer myself criticism is hard to take when we work so hard to write a good book. God bless you Chris.

All of them

I read them all, every one. At first I was confused when you'd mess up names.. Then I looked for it and smiled, I used to think you were messing with your readers.. But then I saw how fast you were writing them. I loved all of these books, your stories are unique and heart felt. I got angry at the outlaws, I loved the shooting. And when your hero would win I was happy. I am so very sorry you are sick, and hope you find joy. You are an amazing human and I love your writing style.

Good solid read

Will be sorry to come to the end of this authors career. I enjoyed most of his books especially his later ones where he toned down the sexual encounters. He has good character development as well as intriguing story lines. C J is in my top three western writers behind Robert Thomas and R o Lane. Whenever I get stuck for a book I re read one of his. Thanks Mr Petit.

Another incredible read

Having read every book Mr. Petit has written, it is always amazing to be able to enjoy each new book as much as the last. Of course it would be disappointing if the hero didn't get the girl, it is always just good fun to find out how it will happen.
No disappointments here, there is great action and a little romance along with some warm family moments to lend a topping of warmth for the heart.
Great read C.J. looking forward to the next one!
