This is Jack’s story. Jack grew up on a rough council estate in London and has hit a rough patch with his business going to the wall. His Uncle Stan is ready to retire and suggests that Jack take over his long-standing Starlight Cafe. With the help of his partner and friends, Jack transforms the rundown Cafe into a successful gourmet burger bar.
With the future looking bright, the Starlight Cafe begins to attract the attention of ruthless burger chain Mack ‘n’ Morti’s. As the battle of burgers escalates, Jack uncovers a dark secret that reveals things are not all as they seem at Mack ‘n’ Morti’s.
The Starlight Cafe is a story with the lot - gourmet burgers, friendship, love and the power and greed of big business.
Jack's Uncle Stan wants to retire and is thinking about selling his Starlight Cafe. Jack isn't able to believe it at first, his Uncle has a strong attachment with the place as he build it from scratch and was devoted to it since many decades, Jack had assumed that he would probably never retire. When he asks Jack if Jack would like to run the Cafe, he asks for some time to think about it.
With Jack's own handyman business not doing so well, the opportunity to run Starlight Cafe attracts him and he says yes. But there are many challenges to overcome the cafe doesn’t look good, the bright yellow paint has become a shade of brown, there are no new customers, the cafe has only a small number of customers, the regulars and not to forget the competition from big international food chains. Will Starlight Cafe be able to become a success story and shine?
If you are willing to read a light and fun story, this is it. The plot is good and the characters are interesting, from an Uncle whose foe is the neighbor's cat to a robber who ends up with helping in rebranding the cafe, it couldn't get more interesting than this. The book can get really hilarious at times and all credit for it goes to the author's writing style.
Starlight Cafe is a fun read with a nice and enjoyable plot, interesting and well planned characters who get introduced in the story at the right time, it is a perfect book that you would enjoy when you are in the mood to read a fun and light book.
Starlight cafe is an entertaining, satirical story of a longshot who locked horns with a ruthless burger joint.
The story follows Jack, who after hitting a Rocky road in his career, is asked by his uncle Stan to take over his cafe which is known as the Starlight cafe. Jack and his friends soon enough bring forth tons of new ideas and suggestions like trying out new burger recipes, shuffling furnitures to give the cafe a better look, social media posts, leaflets and more.
This publicity and advertisements gathers positive outcomes and as a newly furnished cafe Starlight commences to attract customers more quickly than ever. However when other competitor named Mack 'n' Morti's starts to see the sudden changes they decide to do anything and stoop to any level to degrading Starlight's popularity. They turn callous by having the health inspector on their payroll. But Jack wouldn't simply just give up after putting so much effort and time into the The wellbeing of the cafe. He is determined to prove this.
Although this is a satirical story but I really appreciate the inclusion of other themes such as friendship, love, hope and of course competition. This truly shows to what extent can a ruthless and no moral corporation can go to secure a safe spot. Playing dirty political games, the Mack 'n' Morti's not only manipulated but also cheated gravely. The beginning of the story gives every tiny background details which was absolutely necessary to understand the succeeding storyline. The humour was just spot on and I've really enjoyed the dialogues and the certain sarcasms that were exchanged during the whole story.
I think humour or any kind of comedy books can be enjoyed by everybody regardless if they are an ardent reader of this genre or not. When life gets overwhelming and we required something to lighten up on mood books like Starlight Cafe can not only be a distraction from these problems but also help you loosen up the tensions as well. So, this book is for everybody.
This is a well written, intelligent book with subtle humour threaded throughout almost every line. I loved getting to know the characters and following them on their journey in starting a new business together. It was great to be able to see the different perspectives of several characters, but I was disappointed to note that this was often done via head-hopping. A little bit of an edit/clean up would’ve fixed this problem.
I lost some interest in the second half when things went on a tangent and it became more about mafia-type goings-on than the slice of life struggles of ordinary people trying to make good burgers and good lives for themselves. The fledgling friendships (and one cute romance) were swept aside in favour of kidnappings, subterfuge, double-crossings and sabotage!
A fun, entertaining ride, but I guess I like my realistic, ordinary people stories (and burger descriptions) more than the drawn out action of baddies getting hung upside down in warehouses and stuff!
