When Kanbara Kanata is whisked away from his mundane life to a world of adventure, he inadvertently offends the all-powerful being who brought him there. As punishment, he is sent to the bottom of the most dangerous dungeon without a single special power or ability! He is sure that he's a goner until he meets a lich girl named Lunaère--an undead powerhouse who hates humans, but grudgingly decides to assist him all the same. With Lunaère's help, Kanata may just grow into someone truly incredible!
Kanata is a 20-year young man with little going on in his life. He finds himself summoned by a minor god, offering him an opportunity for an isekai life for the entertainment of the gods. Katana just wants to go home to his cat, angering the god in the process. Instead of going home, Kanata is dumped in one of the deadliest dungeons. Instead of the expected quick death, a lich (a cute girl) finds him and makes him her disciple.
While a few tropes are twisted, at its core it is a simple power fantasy isekai. Entertaining to be sure, but not particularly original. The MC at times acts a bit foolish, mostly forgetting his own skills or being oblivious to the power of others despite the obviousness of it. At least the tropes within the world make sense. It was created based on Japanese isekai light novels for the entertainment of the gods after all. The plot is simple and predictable. The characters fit the tropes.
In the end, the read was entertaining, but the story somewhat simple, and not particularly original. If you like isekai, you probably enjoy the book, but personally I was expecting something darker.
This was a super surprising read for me. That’s because as much as Disciple of the Lich is your generic ‘underpowered MC becomes OP isekai’ that I normally dislike, I have to say, I loved every moment of it. Kanata and the rest of the supporting crew are written to be enjoyable, charming, and likeable. Although some might see Kanata as your usual oblivious MC, his circumstances actually support why he views things the way he does, making him feel like a very realistic character. In terms of plot, there does seem to be a bunch of stories weaving together behind the scenes and I’m definitely excited to see them unfold. But in all honesty the characters are really what drives this one for me. Super excited to take another peak into Locklore next volume !
I really enjoyed the relationship between Lunaére (Lich) and Kanata. Although they are both extremely shy and introverted, I think they have the ingredients for a love that can last forever. Lunaére was said to "hate" humans and yet, she did everything in her power to protect and prepare Kanata, so that he would be able to defend himself. She is noble, kind, generous and weird...I think this series is way above average and I hope that it succeeds and keeps publishing new books soon! It is incredibly positive, uses the golden rule to pass-on the knowledge, improve the good people around you and do good deeds... The only thing I didn't like is the similarities I discovered between this new Fantasy novel series and another "successfull" light novel series called Goblin Slayer. Pomera, is a character taken out directly from Goblin Slayer... :'( Book 1 felt well developed, long in page size and story-wise and I am happy that I ran into this new series and I highly recommend it!
Kanbara Kanata has been summoned to another world to be reality show entertainment for the higher gods. At first, this doesn't seem too bad but then he remembers that his poor cat would be on her own if he is spirited away and asks the lower god in charge of production to just be sent home. Unfortunately, this was the wrong answer, furious that Kanata doesn't see this as the opportunity it is the lower god casts him to Coytus the worst dungeon in the world of Lockelore. Assuming he's dead the lower god stops paying attention just in time for Kanata to be rescued by Lunaere an all-powerful Lich who has taken a liking to Kanata and is determined to see him not just survive but thrive.
This was so freaking adorable from the very beginning. Kanata may come across as kind of flippant while dealing with Naiarotrop the fact that he'd much rather stay on Earth than abandon his cat is adorable. His meeting with Lunaere is too cute as well. She clearly is a very kind-hearted Lich but to protect herself she has taken to being cruel, It's sad and yet understandable as we learn more about her past. This also gives us a built-in reason for her to come up with some completely irrational reasons to keep power leveling Kanata, admitting she just wanted him to stay would me she would have to be vulnerable. Also, Lunaere's bestie has been a mimic for the last century and their dynamic is too cute!
Pomera is absolutely adorable as well, I really enjoyed her growth. As she recognizes her own strength she is finally able to see that not just has she been treated like crap, she absolutely has been the subject of racism and no matter how dedicated she is to bringing the races together watching her figure out that she can stand up for herself was beautiful.
Honestly, world-building is kind of built in here if you read/watch an Isekai, Nekoko basically says that towards the beginning of the book. The magic system is a tad bit complicated but again if you've played a JRPG it's pretty standard.
What I really liked about that this though is it's pretty freaking clear by the end that the gods are the bad guys. This isn't really common in the isekais I've read up until recently and I really enjoy that idea. The idea that someone wouldn't want to be Isekai'd definitely needs to be explored more, especially if it's for something as seemingly simple as not wanting to leave your cat behind. This sort of storyline opens up a whole new dynamic between the MC and the summoner and I really can't wait to see how Kanata, Lunaere, and Pomera end up besting the gods!
Have you ever read a book that was so bad you wished you could forget it? Fear not, this book has the solution for you. A combination of characters and cast so uninteresting as to make you forget you ever read it. I only picked this book up because it was literally free, and i fear even then i have paid too much for it. Lets go over it:
Lunaere: an interesting concept. A human being saved by a creature that hates humans. Or it would be, had they not made it abundantly clear that she doesnt actually hate anyone within the first few seconds of meeting her.
Kanata: bland and uninteresting. Completely devoid of goals, personality, talents, or struggles. He lives because he has to, not because he possesses any particular skill or redeeming quality. I know protagonists like this are supposed to be a blank slate for the reader to self insert, but the only beings capable of finding him a candidate for self insertion may be a cardboard box. The only notable thing he did (after forgiving multiple attempted homicides?) Was chop a guys arm off for MILD RACISM.
Pomela: is the naive "protecc" character
All in all, i regret the 2 hours of my life i will never get back.
Good Isekai plot, with a few twists. The MC is overpowered, but in a way that fits the plot. We are set up with an interesting potential dramatic arc, and what could be a good romantic arc. I'm pretty sure this is not going to turn into a harem novel.
Couple of translation things bothered me. There's an evil god named Naiarotop. I suspect that this is a poor transliteration of Nyarlathotep, a god from the Lovecraft mythos. Maybe it got mangled going from English to Japanese and back again. Also, the translator used the word "Acacia" to refer to a book that contained all the knowledge of the Universe. Obviously, this should be "Akasha", and not a thorny tree. I'm surprised the editors didn't catch that. Even if it's a Sanskrit word, it shows up in Japanese light novels all the time.
Kanabara Kanata is not loved by the Gods or it is their Minions? Anyway Kanata is thrown down a dungeon he has no business being able to survive. What happens next is he is discovered by a powerful entity. Lunaère is a Lich an incredibly strong girl that has lived in this Dungeon for over 1000 years. She can't be stopped or contained but chooses to live here because she hates humans. Kanata needs help and Lunaère in a moment of pity decides to help him. She will train him and make him stronger. What ends up happening is she likes Kanata but won't admit it. She throws him out to the world now an overpowered being. Kanata soon discovers that he is overpowered for most of the people and monsters in the area but he needs social help. So he partners with a White Mage and trains her up.
This reads so smoothly. Tons of information isn't just dumped on the reader, it happens over time. This reads out exactly like a manga. I'm looking forward to the next books now. I feel for the main characters, and really wanted to keep reading. When the story diverted away from the main character, it didn't stay away for too long and got right back to the point.
A fun book, you have a op mc and a interesting dynamic with the other main girl. The story has funny moments in a dark setting and has a fresher spin of the standard isekai trope, in which the main character gets transported to another world. In that regard it has really a lot of potential. I can’t wait to read the second book!
A fun little isekai story. I decided to check it out since I liked the authors other story (Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling). It's not very deep but I still found it really fun.
I'll be picking up future volumes and enjoying this ride.
A fun and good story, well paced and nicely written. Don’t expect an original and innovative story or plot, but is very fun to read, with good characters and some hilarious moments. Will be reading second volume for sure.
First book in the series done and I loved it, it was the standard boy reborn in New world but it had its own spealized set of humor and action. The pacing was great and fight scenes well written and every charactor got their moments. Looking forward to book 2
First book started great :loot, leveling , fighting monsters , powerful and smart lich . Until harem stuff started in the second book, i dont get it why most isekai have to resort to drama and harem with small girls. It feels like a scam and lazy writing.
The only thing that really bothered me was how the MC didn’t realize that he was OP like why would you need to be at level 4000??? SIR… SIR… the math not mathing!
