I grabbed my copy of the first book of Hakaijuu and climbed in the bathtub, planning to just read a bit before going to bed. An hour later I climbed out having read the whole thing in one mad rush.
Now... I wouldn't really say this is a great manga, hence the three stars. The good is that it's intense, the art is really detailed, and some of the world-building is interesting. The characters, too, are at least diverse with strong character traits (meaning they are a bit one-note so far, but at least distinguishable). There is also a sense that anyone could die. The sense of scale of the monsters is well-done as well.
On the other hand, while the art is detailed, there is something kind of soulless about it to me. Maybe it's the horror genre influence, but the characters don't feel alive enough as characters. I guess that's my main complaint so far. The story also relies too much on coincidences to get the characters through.
It's also really, really gory. This book goes for the gross out for sure. Basically replace the tired zombie apocalypse with grotesque enormous monsters, keep the gore and bickering characters, and voila! Hakaijuu.
Entertaining and quick read, can't fully recommend it. I like that the mangaka quotes his father's first words upon reading the manga: "I didn't want you to draw this kind of manga" XD XD XD
English first. I read this manga so quick. The plot is a survival and apocalyptic adventure with horrible monsters, a little bit romance and crazy people, perfect for the horror fans. In this sense, is a very adictive story, the mc it's in constantly danger and runing for his life. The side characters are stereotopycal examples of characters in the horror mangas, but it's ok, because the author don't try to write other type of story. A think one of the biggest good points is the art, the ilustrations are so clear and the monsters are horrible and look dangerous. The panels have a big contrast, because the caracters are really beautiful and dedicated, but the creatures and the graphic violence break this image. I think this is a good introduction, but yes, it's a little typical.
Read the series over the course of a few days. I really liked the first few volumes, then it sagged a bit for me. Didn't care for the ending that much, but I liked how the series was all wrapped up. 3,3* from me.
'Creature!' with story and art by Shingo Honda is a manga about a large creature attacking a city.
Akira Takashiro is a student who plays basketball. He is rivals with another boy for the affections of their mutual friend, but none of that matters because suddenly a giant monster attacks. The body parts pile up as Akira escapes school with another student and finds that the carnage is everywhere.
The gore level is high in this one, but I liked it. We don't find out why the monster showed up and started attacking, nor is there a lot of help or hope given to our characters. The art is pretty great. I liked this action packed story.
I received a review copy of this manga from Akita Publishing Co. Ltd. and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
I reread this book in English a few days ago, and it was still fun and gross. It starts out with a sports theme for a few pages, then switches to kind of Lovecraftian giant monster horror, super gory. Since I read it on my iPad instead of the old Japanese tankobon, I could check out the art much larger, which I enjoyed--seriously, the art is cool, if you can stand the gore, and the building destruction and sense of scale is really impressive. Story is still a bit thin I think, but the characters have individual personalities and their own goals and wants. It's fun to read for a monster nerd like me.

This was a decent start to what has potential to be an entertaining series! The story follows three high schoolers, where the two boys have feelings for the girl but have not told her. On an ordinary day, a creature attacks the school and destroys everything in its path. The main characters are on a mission to survive and flee the city. I'll be checking out more in this series for sure!
Crazy monsters attack our hero's school! Will he be able to survive and save the girl he loves? The art is competent, the action is well choreographed, but right now the characters are cyphers. Maybe that will improve as the series advances.
Wasn't to sure about this Manga at first but after about 20pages you get sucked in with giant creatures destroying the town killing humans and more, I'm hooked and the best part the whole series is free if you gave Amazon kindle
I honestly don't know why it took 5 volumes for me to call it quits on this... Complete and utter garbage... I am confused on how this series ran for so long...
