First, there was People’s Republic, then Indian Country, then Wildfire, and Collapse. Then in Crisis, America split into two nations, red and blue, side by side, and at each other’s throats. Now comes The Split, the sixth novel in the bestselling thriller series that began as fiction and every day looks more and more like reality. With the USA ripped apart by the hatred and corruption of the left, red America is building a country based on the principles of the Constitution, while in the People’s Republic of North America, the brakes are off as blue America hurtles toward total social justice tyranny. With the election to replace a senile president approaching, political players within the new blue America jockey for power regardless of the cost. Into this maelstrom, Kelly Turnbull is given a simple job – bring out a half-mad mathematical genius whose computer program could control the outcome of the election. But nothing is ever simple. From a mission into Cuba to an infiltration from Canada, from guerilla war in the Adirondacks to an impossible heist in which Kelly must team up with a renegade radio host and pack of Boston mobsters, the action never stops. With his trusty Wilson Combat CQB .45 and his bad attitude, Kelly Turnbull again does what he does best – lay waste to leftists. You don’t assign Kelly Turnbull a mission. You unleash him. This time, he’s got a score to settle – and he intends to do it with extreme prejudice.

This is the sixth of the seven (so far) Kelly Turnbull novels, however, within the timeline of the story, it is the second. So basically, Schlichter doesn't write them in order, no big deal, it's fiction.
The series is about the split of the United States into two roughly equal parts, the United States and the People's Republic of North America, and this one takes place soon after "The Split" has occurred. The series isn't an endorsement of the split, but more of a warning or cautionary tale like 1984.
There is a lot of action and snarky humor at the PRNA's expense. For example, in order to be more inclusive and politically correct, Burger King has been renamed Burger Person of Royalty. Overall, this is a quick enjoyable read.
If you hate politically correct people you will like this book
Some things are not for everyone. I’m Irish, hate Commies and love guns so I liked this book. If you have a Hate Has No Home Here sign on your front lawn you will not like it.
This book is #6 in the series, but chronologically #2, picking up where Crisis left off, a short time after the country has been divided between "the blues" and "the reds." The main plot has Kelly infiltrating the recently formed People's Republic to get out a crazy scientist or failing that, get hold of the MacGuffin said scientist had squirreled away. Spolier: things don't go as planned, putting Kelly on a collision course with a couple of powerful players and hooking up with unlikely allies.
While being the grimmest, most violent book in the series so far (I hear #7 takes the prize in that regard), there are plenty of humorous references to certain real-life politicians and of course commentary on leftism run amok. My favorite running joke is one of the side characters spending most of his non-shooting time explaining to everyone that he's not Ben Shapiro. It's one of those little absurdities that is truly appreciated in the midst of continuous tension and bloodshed.
Much like the rest of the series, and probably more so, this is a dire warning against letting the "national divorce" fantasy of so many come to life. Most of the warning of this particular entry is directed at the Right, Schlichter's political allies, pointing out with ruthless certainty that having guns and the will to fight won't be enough for those caught on the "wrong" side of the breakup. (Earlier published and chronologically later Indian Country shows that resistance can be possible, but is still quite unflinching as to the cost.)
A couple of new characters are introduced of whom I'd like to see more in the remaining entries, and a few meet well-deserved demise, including one at the end that's both highly satisfying and possibly the worst imaginable way to die. On the whole, Schlichter's progress as a writer is great to see. His characters are more fleshed out, the social commentary is more complex, and the action scenes are more immersive. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series soon.
I will continue to read this series as long as it goes on. I happen to love Kelly Turnbull.
This series is to be taken as a warning, not a wish. There are times that this feels like non-fiction. You can't really read this series as an escape but they are good political, military, espionage type thrillers.
The author’s Kelly Turnbull series resonates with so many “normal” people. Normal people who love America and all it stands for. People, who the left loathe. Turnbull is the future that awaits the left if the country continues on its current path. Great job Colonel!
I hate these books ... Because I can't put them down!
I just read this book in nearly one sitting. Not only am I up way past my bedtime, the ride is over till the next book comes out! As always, great action, fantastic hardware, and some laugh-out-loud humor made this book impossible to put down.
Another Solis entry in the Kelly Turnbull series. Schlichter has his action movie plot structure formula down. A short opening mission, followed by a longer assignment infiltrating the People's Republic of North America (heavily spiced with themes from popular action movies), ending with a climatic shootout or fist fight in a third isolated location.
This time the short introductory mission was liberating Guantanamo Bay from the Chinese government and rescuing kidnapped Republican politicians and figureheads.
The longer mission, a clear riff on Ben Affleck's The Town, is to retrieve a hard drive with the ability to fudge election data being kept in a Boston bank with the help of the Irish mafia.
The final fight in an isolated area is Turnbull hunting down the man who caused his bank heist to go off the rails and who killed a previous love interest to Mackinac Island for an ultimatum.
I enjoyed the opening mission a lot. Schlichter's esoteric comedy is great if you're politically inclined or informed. If not, many of the jokes, and even characters may go over your head.
The main mission to Boston was interesting. The conversations and interactions with the Irish mob were engaging, but I feel like the characters were a little one dimensional for Schlichter. And I know, it's action, that's how characters are supposed to be, but these characters were one dimensional to the point of indistinguishable. I also feel like the bank heist scene was also a little longer than it needed to be.
Lastly, I feel like the final showdown in this book wad a bit of a disappointment. Schlichter was really hyping up Crane III to be this ultimately ruthless bad guy, but I feel he was taken care of just a little to easily and a little to anticlimactically. I was enjoying Crane III way more than Parkinson-Rios from the previous books as Turnbull's main antagonist.
The one last complaint I have with this otherwise entertaining piece of popcorn thriller political satire, is Schlichter's detail to weaponry. The same complaint I have with all his books. I don't mind the guns, I don't mind the violence, but the technical jargon in gun description is almost fetishized. Like, sometimes the gun a character is holding can just be a gun.
Good series. Fun series. Pick up a couple and see how you like them.
Kurt Schlichter’s The Split is a thrilling continuation of the Kelly Turnbull series, a dystopian vision of a divided America. In this installment, the nation is irrevocably split, with the red states forming a new nation and the blue states clinging to their failing socialist experiment.
Schlichter masterfully weaves a tale of political intrigue, military action, and personal sacrifice. Kelly Turnbull, the series' indomitable hero, is once again thrust into the forefront of the conflict, leading a band of patriots against the tyrannical forces of the People's Republic.
The author’s signature blend of humor, action, and political commentary keeps the pages turning. While some may find the plot devices a bit far-fetched, they are ultimately forgivable for the sake of a good, old-fashioned thrill ride.
Tough I didn't think it held up to the preceding books in the series, if you're a fan of action-packed thrillers with a conservative slant, The Split is a must-read. It’s a timely and thought-provoking exploration of the potential consequences of unchecked political extremism.
Exciting red vs. Blue action in the near future after the states split.
Interesting premise and plot. I have read the previous books in the series and continue to enjoy them. Imagine John Wick as a MAGAZINE Warrior with elite military training. The hero, Kelly Turnbull has another mission in the People's Republic, formerly Blue states that split from the Red to form their woke self-government. Enough action for a movie that Hollywood wouldn't make because the pronoun fixated crowd won't appreciate the not-so-subtle jabs at their Priorities. These stories are mean as fictional cautionary tales, which most would hope don't come to pass, despite some even now openly calling for open hostility between the Red and the Blue state Factions. Entertaining but hopefully not too prescient.
I started reading this book. There are not many, if any, books I start and cannot finish. I could not get my head into this book. The author, Kurt Schlicherter, is someone whose articles I read online but I could not get into this book. In his novel he split the United States but he kept splitting the chapters. I didn't know where I was. It wasn't because there was violence. I read thrillers, suspense books but I had to put it down because it was too confusing.
This series has run its course and I won't be reading any future installments.
Same jokes as every other book, and Red State Rambo disarms any opponents with guns or questions on pronoun assumptions. We get a whole lot of Baaahsttuuun in the book and some appeal to Beacon Hill. Lives are risked over a stupid dog and the only redeeming scene is the bank robbery.
People's Republic was worth the read, but the books are more than stale by #6
Another good prequel to "People's Republic," although one should probably read "Crisis" first to get a good understanding of the protagonist's mental state and motivation in this book. Politically incorrect as usual, but not as over the top as some of the others in the series. I found it amusing that art followed life in that the FBI in the book had a working relationship with the Boston Irish Mob.
Kurt Schlichter is back in fine, snarky form, now that he isn’t trying to publish a book (like the previous instalment, Crisis) within days of an election whose outcome is in doubt.
Leftists and Democrats Won’t comprehend This Novel
Leftists and Liberals should avoid reading this novel! It will either anger them or they won’t get what it is about. But if you are not one them, you will find The Split both hilarious and sobering. The whole series is wort reading.
What I liked most was the ending as this told me there would be a seventh Kelly Turnbull book coming along eventually. I say eventually because it won't be soon enough. This was another great read but I was off saddened by the fact that Kelly was left without his Wilson Combat .45. That's enough of a teaser.
Currently, reading this series from deep inside the Red. It is scary how close to the political climate in the US is today this series. It definitely gives you something to think about if things don't change soon. I love this series and cannot wait for book 7 to come out and find out what kind of trouble Kelly finds himself in next.
The body count in this one is even higher LOL. Kelly Turnbull as usual takes no prisoners and evens up the score on some that needed to leave the planet. Can't wait for book 7!
Kelly rides again in Kurt’s latest book on what could happen if we stay on our current trajectory politically. I hope they are not prescient but I would not be surprised. Well done as usual Kurt!
Well, another fun read with Kelley Turnbull making havoc once more in the People’s Republic (formerly the Blue States of the U.S.). This being the 6th book in the series, they are beginning to get a bit formulaic- nevertheless we readers keep coming back for more.
Thank you for another fun book even if you don' t seem to get you order correct. Remember primacy and recentcy. It is nice to read an author that understands absolute and final physical action. Mr. Crane could not have had a better final act.
Now I have read all of the Kelly Turnbull books. Read them all in succession….. anxiously waiting to see him in the next one. I will continue with other writings by Kurt until Kelly shows up again.
A fun, action-packed story that parallels and skewers current events...and predicts a grim future for America. At least, the part of America that continues down our current path!
I know this book is a warning. So we don’t go down this slippery path. Unfortunately it looks like we are headed that way. I just hope I’m deep in the red when it happens
This book was fast moving and kept me wanting more all the way through. Yes it is fiction but, there are a lot of things that point to warnings as well. Great writing!
Hopeful that our country figures out a better direction!
A little frightening to read about situations that don't seem out of the realm of possibility these days! But, I really enjoyed the book and I'm rooting for the good guys!
