An emotional princess mermaid story with a pirate love interest. Kindle Unlimited.
I was hoping this story would be good, since I'm a sucker for mermaids, princesses and pirates and all the entanglements that come from such characters! And it was! There were a lot of beautifully written passages and poignant moments between the couple as they are getting to know one another, while the stress of Keola hiding who she really is looms over them both, as they fall for each other anyway, while looking for treasure on the high seas.
We meet Keola who is a princess (and a mermaid but the magic of them means they are more shapeshifting types, able to pass as human on land) being sent off to be married by her father to another kingdoms prince. She has had her magic of transformation taken from her, and placed in the hands of her betrothed to keep her going along with the arrangement. She had been vocal about not wanting this marriage and not liking men, but her father and his political leanings didn't care.
Keola cannot bear the loss of her magic, but she also knows she could not bear having to submit to such a marriage either. So she chooses to escape on the way, at sea. She still maintains some slight seafaring powers that assist her in navigating and not drowning, so when she is picked up by a suspected pirating vessel and meets Captain Annar, (a savvy pirate turned legitimate business woman, who utilized her former Captains ship to go after more legitimate stashes of treasure) Keola decides she should keep the truth close to her chest, so as not to be sold out herself!.
But of course she needn't worry, Annar is respected and honest, lived a hard life as many of the crew have, too. They simply used piracy as a means to feed and clothe themselves, before turning to more legitimate prospects. But it is still not without its safety hazards.
Both women are strong and stubborn, but caring and drawn to eachother. You can't help but root for them. Despite Keola being a noble daughter and well educated in many ways, there are also many ways she is completely naïve, such as her struggle in coming to understand the poorer life of Annar and her upbringing and how she got into piracy. Annar in turn while 'street savvy' and able to see that Keola is from a higher status than she, too struggled to understand why a noble would need to leave such a life. Both realize that no matter where you come from, your origins can have you trapped, so they find a similarity there, as both are trying to escape out of those ties that bind.
There's sea faring adventure as Keola becomes a part of the crew, and the romance progresses nicely. Annar has a mythical treasure she is seeking, that Keola may be able to help with - but is it just a fairy tale, or could it be real?
I just thoroughly enjoyed this lovely tale, it's not all action, or all romance, but at it's core about people getting to know each other and the realization of similarities despite outward differences. I put a few quotable passages in the notes/highlights section, because I felt they were beautifully written and very emotive. I would recommend to lovers of fantasy, pirates, mermaids and adventure stories!
First of all, thank you BookSirens for providing me an ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. The following review has my honest opinion and thoughts.
“Would it be all right to borrow this? I have… not read many stories like this. My father doesn’t like them, so I only could when my- …when my friends would acquire one for me in secret.” “Oh no!” Anaar pressed a hand to her chest in mock horror. “That is just downright cruel! Every young girl should read sappy romance stories to her heart’s content. Or young boy, for that matter. Anyone, really.”
Looking for a new adventure at sea alongside pirates ( or, well, ex-pirates) in search of mythical treasures, runaway brides that also happen to be mermaid princesses and scorned fiancés? Than this is the book for you. It's fast paced, easy to read and it has a nice romance with a happy ending.
“I had to lose one thing either way. So I chose to leave my magic behind and take my freedom instead.”
》》The Plot《《
Keola is a mermaid princess who has been promised as a bride to the crown prince of a neighbor kingdom. With her magic and tale taken away, the only option is to embark on the ship that will lead her to her new home and her heartless fiancé, in the hope of retrieving her powers. But when she realise that she'll never get her freedom after that, she needs to make a choice: live her life in a golden cage in hope that her stolen gifts will be returned to her or runaway and try to live as a mortal, but true to herself. Captain Anaar Kahlani is searching for something or someone who can help her read the magic map that will lead her to the lost crown of Ola’Baryt. And when her crew gets a mysterious and extremely beautiful woman out of the sea, she feels more than intrigued. When the woman she has chosen to save also proves to be an extremely skilled wavesinger with knowledge of old languages, she thinks this might be exactly the help she was looking for.
》》Ups and Downs《《
🧜♀️ There were some scenes that were very enjoyable, but there were no moments when I was actually fangirling and holding my breath to see what will happen. While I liked the characters, the romance and the storyline, I felt like I didn't actually get very attached to any of them and, for me, reading a book that gives you all the feels is the ultimate goal. However, I did appreciate the love story between Keola and Aanar: that has girl power written all over it.
🧜♀️ "Losing one’s voice is considered a tragedy, but we would not dream of excluding someone because of it.” Now that Keola had said it out loud, it made Anaar wonder why so few people bothered with it on land.
I absolutely loved this scene. I felt like it pointed out our ignorance towards people who are less fortunate because the sad reality is that not many people know the sign language and, taking for granted that we can hear and speak, we do not bother to learn it and help break down the communication barriers.
🧜♀️ “If that’s not a door, I’ll throw myself off this rock.” Keola’s grip got a little tighter. “Please don’t. I’d have to come and pull you out, and I’d rather not.”
The relationship between Keola and Aanar was great. They were a really good power couple and it felt natural to follow those two strong and courageous women fall in love. However, I would have loved more banter and teasing between them, especially at first.
🧜♀️ Something I definitely liked was the writing style: it was very good and it was one of the things that made me request this ARC after reading the preview.
》》Conclusion《《
If you liked To Kill a Kingdom or the Daughter of the Pirate King duology, I definitely recommend to give this novel a chance. I will certainly be keeping an eye on the author.
“I don’t remember asking your opinion.” “Oh, I know. I’m giving it anyway. I’m just that generous.”
A MELODY IN THE DEEP was a lot of fun to read and I really enjoyed Keola and Anaar's gentle romance. They were a great match together and I loved the combination of a mermaid in human form and a former (sort of) pirate who takes her in. The world of mermaids and magic was really interesting and I poignantly felt Keola's grief over losing her magic and her tail. While this was a closed door romance, the love and devotion of each woman was clear and written really well. I adored watching Keola and Anaar learn to trust each other and find happiness. Throw in some treasure hunting, adventures on the high seas, a gruff but loving second in command and you have a great fantasy romance!

Then there was another touch. The lightest brush of a fingertip along Keola’s cheek, and that was the moment she knew she was lost. The moment she leaned in, stood on her toes, and kissed Anaar.
Mermaids, pirates legitimate businesswomen and a treasure hunt?? Sign me up! This was a treat. Delaney is able to simply paint a vivid and rich word and characters that you'll just fall in love with. The story sucks you in right away and keeps a steady pace of pure enjoyment. My one gripe was I thought the POVs would've been better switched in a couple places so the action doesn't happen off page. Other than that, chef's kiss.

Cara N. Delaney brings mermaid tales (and tails?), a dashing pirate captain, and a treasure hunt to life in her novel A Melody in the Deep. Keola is the princess of Neshad, an island kingdom of merfolk. When forced into an engagement, them stealing her magic in the process, she has to decide: Will she escape and accept being without a tail or magic for the rest of her life? Or will she wed a heartless prince for a chance to be under the waves again?
The world that Cara has built is so unique and beautiful. The merfolk are descendants of the ancient sea serpents, with their own legends and rich history. Because of this, their magic is a part of their heart and soul. When it's taken from them, it's painful and scarring. The way she demonstrates this creates a vividly realistic allegory for trauma. "Every night, her heart broke all over again for what had been taken from her." When reading this, it's impossible not to empathize with Keola and her heartache.
The character development throughout the novel is astronomical. In the beginning, Keola is heartbroken, adrift, unsure of who she is. By the end, we see her transform into a self-assured woman, willing to fight for the life she wants.
The journey they go on to find a mystical hoard of the long-lost sea serpents is so well-thought-out it was unlike any other treasure hunt novel I've read. Paired with the tension and fear of being found ensures that readers will feel exhilarated and anxious at every turn.
With all of the build-up, the ending feels anticlimactic and rushed in comparison. The villain is spoken of with so much fear throughout the novel. When they do appear, they don't measure up to the dread built around them. That part of the plot could have been omitted without really changing the story.
A Melody in the Deep still receives four out of five stars from me. It's a gorgeous fairytale about fighting for love and fighting for yourself. We're taught vital lessons about making sacrifices for the life we want and the people we love. I haven't even covered how beautiful the love story is. I'll leave that for you to find out yourself. The adult content is only implied, and the violence is mild, so it's a perfect read for readers 12+ looking for a unique fairytale about life, love, and adventure.
4.5 This is the merfolk/romance book I've been waiting for!
I actually put off reading it because I'd been disappointed a few times this year already.
Wish I'd picked it up sooner.
The romance is really wholesome and the world building is fantastic. Usually the romance is expected to hold up shoddy world building but it's well integrated here.
I'd happily read more books set in this world. The merfolk sound fascinating and beautiful. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An ARC copy was given to me from BookSirens for a honest review.
I really liked the story about Keola (Princess of the Neshad) and Anaar (Business woman). The story has a very good story line with touch of mystery, magic and adventure and I kept my self asking, will there be a happy end. The story shows that everything is possible if you keep trying. I only hope there will be more, because the end came to quick for me.
This is my fault for being in the middle of the worst book hangover I’ve ever experienced. (Names for the Dawn, you complete me.) I experience book hangovers so rarely that I have no idea how to pick what to read after. I thought I’d try something that’s the opposite of angsty historical romance and landed on this sapphic fantasy romance. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a strong enough internal or external conflict to hold my attention and I really need one or the other right now. Plus, I don’t understand why Anaar is so obsessed with this treasure when her crew isn’t completely on board.
Characters: Keola is a lesbian mermaid princess with brown skin, posing as a wavesinger. Anaar is a ship captain and former pirate. The ship’s cat is named El-Mari.
Content notes: Keola’s father tried to force her to marry someone by having her fiancé hold a shell with her essence as insurance, Keola is able to manipulate sailors with her voice, Anaar’s father threw her out at age 13, past poverty, alcohol, ableist language, use of “slave away” by people who are not enslaved
I was intrigued the second I saw the cover. I loved the idea of getting to read about merfolk and adventures on the sea again. I’ve loved this story, how it was written, how it progressed and ended. It was never dull and it ended adorably. The characters? You just have to love Anaar and Keola. Both for different reasons but I love them individually and together. I couldn’t put this down :D

This was a really fun read that included mermaids, privateers, treasure hunts, magic, and love. Keola and Anaar were both well developed characters and I thoroughly enjoyed reading from both of their perspectives. It was empowering to read about a female captain and a princess who took her fate into her own hands. The world and magic system were so interesting and unique. The writing was descriptive and the pacing was just right. I do, however, wish the ending had been fleshed out more, but maybe that’s just because I didn’t want the story to end. The romance was sweet and realistic and I really appreciated the LGBT representation. This was a breath of fresh air and a truly enjoyable read.
I would definitely recommend this novel if you like mermaids, reading about life on a ship, and searching for mythical treasure.
Content warnings: language, some intimate scenes, violence
(I received a digital ARC from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.)
The book "A Melody in the Deep" by Cara N. Delaney is about Captain Anaar who, with her crew, catches Keola floating on the sea and takes her with them on their travels. Keola is on the run from an arranged marriage and is lucky to get a place as a wavesinger aboard the Aurora through her talent with the sea.
The story drew me into its fabulous world from the beginning and the closer I got to the end, the more I dreaded leaving. A world with merfolk, wavesingers, pirates, princes and princesses and freelancers. I can recommend everyone to read this book. The Two main characters were three dimensional, intriguing and likable and had great chemistry together.
All in all, a great book that I will definitely read again soon.

this book had the potential to be something great and instead was such a let down. there’s no stakes, there’s no real bad guy, the only bit of angst/drama is thrown in at the last second as a sort of last ditch attempt to round out some storylines. this books let me down big time

A Melody in the Deep features Keola, a mermaid who is being forced to marry a prince she's never met, and Anaar, a pirate captain in search of a treasure that most say are a myth. When Keola makes a run for it she ends up on Anaar's ship — and might just be exactly what Anaar needed to unlock the secrets to her treasure.
I often find pirate characters to be more like caricatures in books. The way they talk and act tend to be stereotypical and superficial, without any nuances to their characters. This is not the case with A Melody in the Deep.
The characters were refreshingly realistic and three-dimensional. Nothing they did was out of character or forced, and it was clear that they all had lives outside of the main plot that added another layer of depth. In truth, the characters were the main reason why I liked the book as much as I did. And honestly, it was thew reason why I instantly fell in love with Anaar.
I loved the romance. The pacing gave me time to connect to the characters and really get invested in them individually and together. Anaar is just the love of my life and I would like one of my own please and thank you *quietly negotiating with the universe to manifest it*
The writing is very clean. I’d be super interested in knowing who edited A Melody in the Deep, or if Cara N. Delaney did it herself. don’t mind my editor brain switching on It was super engaging, and it has a fairy tale-esque vibe to it that helped build the mythically of the world.
It doesn’t focus on the world building too much, but I found I didn’t really miss it. I read it for the romance, and it delivered.
Even though there is a quest subplot, the main plot was Anaar and Keola. I tend to prefer the adventure plots to the romantic ones, but I just wanted to focus on the couple the whole time.
The one place where the book lost me a little was the ending, specifically the epilogue. Obviously, I can’t talk about this without spoilers, so I’ll add my thoughts in a spoiler tag.
----
In conclusion,A Melody in the Deep was everything I didn’t know I wanted: Pirates, mermaids, sapphic love, and a captivating fairy tale-esque writing style.
A dashing former-pirate, and current captain of the Blue Aurora, is trying to secure a comfortable, wealthy future for herself and her crew. Captain Anaar Kahlani is clever and adventurous, with a dash of sexy. Her world is flipped upside down when a mysterious woman is pulled aboard from the sea.
Keola once enjoyed all the luxuries afforded to a princess, but not the heavy responsibility thrust upon her. Despite her protests, her father has promised her in marriage to a man she detests. In order to escape her fate she must choose between her magic and her freedom. Once aboard the Blue Aurora she is determined to keep her past a secret and forge a new life, but the charming captain makes that much more difficult, especially when she learns Keola may be the answer to finally finding the ultimate hoard.
I loved every moment of this book. The characters are fully fleshed out and the romance between Keola and Anaar is a sizzling, slow burn that kept me hooked. I couldn't put it down because each new chapter might be the one where they finally confess their feelings. The payoff is well worth it, and it is lovely to see these strong women show vulnerability and intimacy. Cara Delaney builds a whole world where mythological creatures are common place, but in a way that feels natural and believable. Delaney uses a unique writing style that can really connect with the reader. It's written the way people really speak and think, as opposed to being grammatically correct 100% of the time.
I gave A Melody in the Deep 5 stars because I genuinely have nothing negative to say about it. I now consider myself a big fan and can't wait to read more from this promising author. I highly recommend this delightful book. Happy reading!

I honestly enjoyed reading A Melody in the Deep more than I thought I would! I loved the tropes and the world and the characters, they were absolutely wonderful. I felt that it had just the right amount of romance mixed in with the plot, so that it was quite evenly balanced.
It may seem indecisive of me to talk highly of some main aspects of it, and then proceed to rate it three stars, but I have my reasons. The main one being how things are told way more often then it was shown. Things were made obvious because they were told so directly and repetitive, that there was really no “aha” moment or part I felt really shocked me. It seemed sort of monotone at times, I could feel like I really was a reader instead of falling into the world.
Regardless of the way I thought about how the story was told, I feel like it was decently put together. If it wasn’t for the characters and the “mythology”- if that’s what you’d consider it- I probably wouldn’t have been able to get through the book. However, those parts were spot on, so I was able to enjoy the book while ignoring my dislike of the writing. Overall, I thought it was easy to read, with a wonderful balance of romance and fantasy.
Thank you to the author and publisher for providing me with an ebook advance reader copy for free- in exchange of me leaving a review both honestly and voluntarily.

A Melody in the Deep by Cara N. Delaney is an absolute must read for fans of the genre. For those concerned, the 'adult content' is only really hinted at, rather than anything explicit. This would be an easy 5 star book for me, if the copy I received didn't have some typos etc. I'm guessing that the print edition will be better edited, but can only base my review on the version I've read.
This book has a lot of highs and really few lows. The only complaint I have is that the love interest of the main character is somewhat interchangeable. I honestly forgot that she was a woman most of the time, as her being one was virtually irrelevant. Considering that is the worst part of the book, I have to say, well done Cara N Delaney. You are now on my followed authors list. Now, onto some of the high points. The main character is star; absolutely brilliant. The plot builds tension early followed by excitement and action that roils and builds, all while the character arc proceeds along nicely.
Wait... I thought of another complaint. I wanted to spend more time in this book's universe. Even if there isn't a sequel, maybe we can hope for another book in this same universe.
I don't even know how to start this review😅 This book was just so good!
When I read the synopsis and I heard it was about a Sapphic mermaid, I was immediately sold. Maybe it's also a bit because lately I am into pirate stories😅
But when I started this book I didn't know I would fell in love so much with these characters. I got to feel a lot of emotions, even the ending made me almost cry from happiness😭❤️
I really loved every page in this book and the tension was building up more and more so I couldn't put this book aside. I had to read further.
Can we just appreciate how good this story is? Mermaids, wavesingers, pirates, treasure hunting. Do you need more to convince you to read this book?
This book was so well written and I am sad that I have read this story so fast because I would want to stay in this world a little more. I don't want to say goodbye to them🥰
This story was so original and beautiful. The love between the two characters breaks my heart to read it🥰❤️ they are just perfect for each other.
So little summary: this book was amazing, original, beautiful and lovely❤️
Last but not least I want to thank the author and booksirens for providing me with an earc of this book.
The story follows Keola, a mermaid Princess who has had her magic and tail stolen from her, and she has been sent off to be forcibly married to a human prince she neither loves or even really likes for the benefit of her kingdom. Cue Keola getting cold feet and jumping ship, like literally, and ending up on a raiding ship Blue Aurora, captained by ex-Pirate Anaar.
Unable to expose who she really is, and struggling with her identity without her mermaid magic, she poses as a wavesinger, and offers to work on the ship in order to stay near the sea. Keola forms a bond with Anaar, and together they chase an elusive treasure, thought to be a fable. Despite being from immensely different backgrounds, they both share an understanding of struggling with your own identity and fighting for the life you want.
This book has it all. Mermaids, pirates, dragons, a treasure quest, magic and a queer love story which I was completely shipping… see what I did there… sorry I’ll stop. The world building is wonderful and this is a truly unique take on mermaids - written more as shapeshifters who can pass as human on land.
4 ⭐️ because the ending was meh, rushed and anticlimactic.
Huge thank you to BookSirens and to the author Cara N Delaney for the advanced copy in return for my honest opinion.
A melody in the deep is about Keola, a mermaid princess who is arranged to marry a human prince against her will. She escapes into the ocean and eventually starts working as a wave singer on a free lance ship.
I really enjoyed this. I do tend to enjoy books about oceans and mermaids. But this one was very different from others I’ve read before. Keola and Captain Anaar Kahlani’s character development was good. It was very well paced and I liked learning about them gradually as well as Anaar’s reaction to a certain reveal. The world was interesting to learn about as well and I thought that the magic and mer elements were woven in pretty well and I enjoyed the ending too. There were definitely some things that happened that I didn’t expect which was nice.
I would’ve liked to learn a bit more about the ship though and the other people on it. Other than Bezad and Sabri, most people tended to feel like background characters. I also would’ve liked to learn more about Wavesinger magic and mer civilization but what we got was still good. Overall 4.5 / 5 stars.

I received an advance review copy for free, via BooksSirens and I am leaving honest this review voluntarily. I started reading this one early September, as a way to stay close to the sea for a little while longer. "A Melody in the deep", at least to me, has a vibe of sailing the ocean mid autumn, thought I cannot recall whether on not the season is mentioned in the script. It also gives off the feeling of longing for freedom and chasing happiness. The story itself isn't one that hasn't been told before. But it is definately one worth reading, as it has vivid images and character you can easily fall in love with. We follow Annar and Keola as they fall for each other, one becoming each other port after years of not even seeing a single piece of dry land. I would have liked to see a bit more spicy, regarding the falling in love scenes, but I did like the feeling of "falling in love for the first time" that it gives off. Note that it's one of the few saphic romances I read, so if that's something you're interested in trying to get into, this is a great starter book, in my opinion.
Dashing female pirate captains rescuing runaway princesses (who happen to be mermaids) - this is what I want as a queer reader!
Melody in the Deep is an adventure-on-the-high-seas story, with a good sapphic romance. The author has done some interesting fantasy world-building and I would have gladly spent a bit more time in this universe.
I am grateful we have a lot more queer content in movies and TV these days, but representation in this genre is still pretty thin - if LGBTQ characters are there, they’re usually secondary (or tertiary). I would love to see an F/F pirate adventure story like this, made into a film.
In terms of writing style, the pacing could be hit and miss - sometimes enthralling, some sections a bit draggy - but it’s hard to put my finger on why, and something to ask those with more editing experience.
Still, if you’re looking for a light fantasy-adventure with F/F romance, this might fit the bill!
Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
3.5 rounded up to 4 because the end of this kicks ass.
The worldbuilding of the mythology of the merfolk is very cool, even though we only get glimpses of it. I want more stories about them!
The romance is sweet, though the stakes never felt very high with it…the attraction didn’t cross over into real pining, I’d say. But it did meet my gotta-haves: the MCs act in ways that make sense for them, and they talk (in this case, they talk about what they’re not talking about! )
The biggest drawback to the story was that it didn’t feel like a lot happened through the bulk of the midsection. I mean, things definitely did happen, but sloooowly - there was no sense of momentum or urgency.
Then whoosh bang boom, the last 30% was fast paced and EVERYTHING happened. I fully approve of the badass adventure-ending and the HEA ending. Very satisfying! ---- I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Omg, I absolutely loved loved loved this book!
Keola is a mermaid princess whose connection to the sea has been taken away to ensure she will go through with the marriage arranged by her father, the king.
To escape this fate, she uses the little bit of magic she has left to escape the ship she is on during a storm and ends up on Anaar’s ship. Keola does not trust anyone (understandably) and hides who she is.
Anaar needs Keola’s help to find a magical treasure and during the “hunt” they slowly fall in love.
It is the gay mermaid story you didn’t know you needed to read. It has magic, mermaids, pirates, treasure and so much more!
I couldn’t put this book down, it’s amazing. I don’t give many books 5 stars, but this one really deserves it! Everyone should read this book!
A mermaid princess fleeing an arranged marriage, and a 'freelancer' captain seeking a legendary treasure. Having her magic stolen from her to force her hand was probably the nastiest thing that could be done to Keola, and yet she makes her decisions, and with her path crossing with Anaar's, perhaps there is some hope.
A tale of romance and growth, of grasping for what you want and hoping in legends, of journeys across the sea, I really really enjoyed this tale. The relationship is slow at first, but also very sweet, the story woven well and pulling you in, and I really liked the ending as well, a perfect fit for the characters.
This is a well told fantasy of pirates and mermaids, and one that I'd easily recommend.
I'll read just about any lesbian pirate book I find, but they're often underwhelming. Not this one though!! It's got everything you could want, from a goodhearted pirate-lite (sort of a Robin Hood deal, raiding only from pirates, and absent any of the initial cruelty that everybody seems to want to write into this genre), a mermaid princess, magic, and a treasure map! The romance is sweet and a little tame, the adventure is fun, and the characters are lovely. There are maybe a few places where things happen a BIT too conveniently, but I'm happy to overlook that when it's got everything else I want.
I think I picked this up after seeing someone mention it on Instagram. It's been a long while since I read anything involving mermaids and it sounded cute. It turned out to be a fun (a little slow in places) adventure/love story nestled within some quite interesting lore (that honestly I wish I could read more about). It just could have done with a more thorough edit, that's all. I can't see it going on to a sequel from where it left off, which is a shame, as it would have been nice to find out more about the merfolk/serpents/dragons/history etc.
Water themes incorporating mermaids is a siren's song for me. I didn't even need to read the blurb. All I did was see read the first sentence - "Keola is a mermaid" and I saw the book cover. Hooked and reeled in, I went into this story pretty cold. It was to my surprise that it is a F/f romance. SCORE! I didn't think the book could get better but when this romantic element entered into the storyline, I nearly swooned in happiness.

A new author for me. This book was an adventure with so many twists, some expected yet some unexpected but fit the story well. If it's pirate treasure and intrigue you want look no further. Well written, with descriptions that paint in your head. A word of warning - if you don't appreciate love between lesbians don't read this. Otherwise, enjoy the adventure of pirates, merfolk, and tyrants. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
