Mio, stuck with her father's debt, finds herself at a dead-end when she runs into her first love, Yamato Kujo. She's surprised when she learns that he's become a lieutenant for the Yakuza, and he's willing to take on her debt in exchange for her hand in marriage! The two begin to live together, and Mio finds herself wanting to know more and more about Yamato. It's when Yamato invites Mio out on their very first date, that she learns about Yamato's past...
Is Yakuza Lover too raunchy for you while lacking mob politics? Then here's the series for you! That's not entirely a fair summation of Boss Wife, but it is hard not to compare the two titles. This one is much more romantic (as opposed to thirsty) and feels like an actual mature romance title rather than one that just throws in lots of sex. I'm not sure it's actually good, but it is a better take on the genre by most serious measures.
DNF could not get through this one. I did not enjoy the story and couldn’t empathize with any of the characters. They don’t have consistent personalities and the errors in art or typography are too hard to ignore. One star added because some of the art is very pretty and I like the basic theme of the manga but this one is not for me
The fact I read volume 1 to 7 in one day says enough about the pacing. The story is interesting and the characters feel really grounded and you are rooting for (most of) them.
Still despite my somewhat love for yakuza type stories (more yankees) I think I will forget everything about this story in about 6 months. It's not bad at all yet... there is something missing. Maybe because every thing is a bit too subtle? The humour, the story, even the love between the main characters? Which seems outrageous to say because their love is very strong. It is also based on both characters knowing in what kind of world they are living in.
But still, maybe I need some drama in these kinds of yakuza type stories. Which is a bit of a shame.
Rape can involve married partners. No matter what, whether you are married, dating, or if it is a one night stand, consent is always required.
Shirosaki are being rough and harsh to Akari but you expect her to like it? She's in pain you as*hole!!! Akari deserves better! While the main couple is cute and fluffy.
Shirosaki is a piece of trash, I wouldn't be too surprised if he had something to do with Ryuki's death, and I'm kinda sure he must have married Akari against her will by threatening her or something. Now he is trying to recrute Shiki, isn't he??
This couple is still insanely cute and good natured and it was adorable to get a flashback of how long Kujo has been in love with Mio. But, this felt discombobulated to me. Not sure why? It’s feeling more cheesy to me. Gonna have to stay tuned for volume three to see where this is really going. Not gonna throw in the towel yet.
I really like that despite how overwhelming the situation, Mio is very determined to learn more about Kujo and the yakuza as a whole. It’s cute seeing how much she wants to stay with her husband and comfort him whenever she can. Also aside from the newlyweds, I trust absolutely no one in this manga. I trust the Deputy Shirosaki the least of all.
The two parts of this concept don't always fit seamlessly but also the friction produces energy. And it could go a bunch of places, which is cool.
(Reading this reminded me to go check on the status of the yakuza "romance" I really want to be licensed - Raise wa Tanin ga Ii - and I am delighted to be now in possession of the knowledge that Seven Seas has picked it up.)
While the main couple is still loving and really sweet, I’m just not sure if there is enough sustenance there? They are so happy but like a little too happy? The smut scenes are a nice treat but I’m still interested to see where this series goes.
The characters are pretty silly and the frequent weird simple faces seem like a way to not have to draw character faces in a lot of panels. Art is just ok overall.
3 cautiously interested stars out of 5 cautiously not expecting too much stars
Now that we got more backstory...I am fully invested in this. I love the artwork and I love this couple. It's a bit cheesy at times but I'm ok with that...just enjoying it for what it is.
