So helpful, and relatable. This is really a Bible of information on art and becoming an artist. Must read for all interested or learning. Reading this cover to cover again now.
Sketch Every Day: Over 200 Pages of Art and Sketching Techniques - Simone Grünewald Rating: ★★★ Divided into 5 sections (plus introduction) - "My Creative Journey" (part curriculum vitae, part personal timeline) - "Artist's Advice" (sketching everywhere, not waiting until you have the right tools, growing a following, finding your style) - "Art Fundamentals" (lighting, composition, perspective, inking, colour palettes) (the most interesting of the two sections filled with technical drawing techniques) - "Character Design" (how to draw faces (eyes, nose, mouth), hands, feet, clothes, body proportions, dynamic poses, body languages, hair (and facial/body hair), aging characters, caricatures, dogs, cats, fur, trees) (all good things, longest section, but a bit basic compared to other drawing material) - "Family Life" (balancing work with having a family, probably my favourite section, also the shortest)
This is a great-looking book full of gorgeous illustrations. The majority of the book is instructional, touching on topics from basic anatomy to lighting to composition. Some topics are touched on more thoroughly than others, making the lessons feel incomplete. The page layouts seem to favor visual balance over logical flow, making the information a bit scattered. Still, there's a lot of great stuff to learn from this book, although I probably wouldn't recommend it for beginners.
Picked up because I saw someone mention it in a YouTube video by someone trying to advance their art as quickly as possible using scientific methods. I have no clue why they’d suggest this one.
Advertised as an art book, but it’s clear she just wants to talk about being a mom.
Nothing usable comes in until about page 70. She admits full on some of the things she’s showing you are technically incorrect. The whole back section is about family life.
I’ll take what I managed to get out of it. There was some good info about simplification and stylizing concepts. But I would absolutely not recommend this.
Inspiring and warmly inviting introduction to drawing, while sharing Grünewald's artistic journey. She's been (another) one of my favorite artists for a while now and I was excited to read about her experiences and learn new sketching techniques. Her guidance is relatable and practical, displayed in fun ways. This is a great book for those of us who need a little bit of encouragement and practical prompting to finally pull the pad and pencil out of the drawer and get something, anything really, on the paper.
Not exactly what I'd expected, but still a helpful book to have read through. It's like a grab bag of tips and techniques on a range of topics, from color schemes to character building, which might be too basic for advanced artists and too overwhelming for total beginners, but just right at an intermediate level, especially for digital art.
I sometimes struggled to connect with the ideas since I don't work digitally, and I'll probably only remember a fraction of what I read, but it nevertheless gave me good food for thought.
Very nice book on sketching. Essentially a collection with tips on a whole load of different aspects of drawing and thereby sketching. Each of this topic can in itself be seen as individual exercise(s), making for a healthy dose of inspiration and work.
Caveat: This is better suited for beginners, since the contend is, while beautifully presented and well organized, nothing new for someone experienced.
This is my favorite out of Simone's book and has helped my art a lot more than I initially thought it would. I love Simone's art and it has a lot of it in there but also the breakdown of her artistic process and how to be a better artist. She has experience and knowledge and talent and her book is amazing.
This book is fine but it feels a little too technical for most people and I was hoping for more concrete maybe i don't know 100 separate exercises with examples from the artist to practice. Pick this up if you want to see some ideas and a professionals artist process/ ideas which is useful even if its not as useful as I hoped it would be.
I got this not knowing the artist and wanting to get more technical books are how to draw and art books. While there is some good information in here I can't see myself picking this book up for inspiration or for reference. I do enjoy Simone's art style but otherwise this book isn't for me.
