What an absolute joy it was to read this novel. Scratch that last bit, I devoured it. The concept is genius – a tribute artist to the world’s most famous pop star is approached by the actual megastar and asked if she’ll swap places with her for a fortnight. For suburban Sally Marshall and her husband Paul it’s a no-brainer, especially as star Epiphanie also offers a substantial amount of cash – money which just might help Sally and Paul achieve their dream.
Haven’t we all wondered what it would be like to live the high life, that of an A-lister? The adulation, the appearance in magazines and newspapers, the houses, the clothes, the attention, the holidays, not to mention the squillions of dollars/pounds…
But will the world of pop stardom glitter for Sally? And how will diva Epiphanie cope with playing flea-bitten venues to a handful (if she’s lucky) of half-cut punters?
This is a pacey, laugh-out-loud romp, spliced through with thought-provoking meditations on what makes for a good life. Miller’s heroine is an ‘ordinary’ woman doing an extraordinary job, and Sally is a gem of a lead. Throughout the story she radiates warm-heartedness and star-quality in the most authentic sense, and she’s given strong support from a constellation of delightful, memorable characters.
Once again, Beth Miller delivers a warm, witty and poignant story. What a superstar she is. Highly recommended.
