It was the twenty-third year of Tianxi. Rumours traversed the streets that the all-knowing Imperial Advisor suffered a great calamity and could not help but enter seclusion to focus on cultivation. However, the commoners secretly clapped their hands and rejoiced. In the winter of the same year, a young monk appeared in the Hui Zhou Fu’s Ningyang District.
The monk’s monastic title was Xuan Min, his memories all missing, yet was versed in the arts of Feng Shui Kan Yu. On the very first day arriving in Ningyang, he did not hesitate to take care of a dangerous manor, picking up Xue Xian, who was hidden there, along the way.
Since then, Xue Xian – who had been all-powerful in the first half of his life – gained a new life pursuit: to get this baldy who had only a good outer appearance to take his last breath and “smile from his grave”.
Xue Xian: If you are unhappy, then I will be happy. If you die, I’ll laugh my ass off.
Love 💜Love 💜Love 💜this novel! Please do not let a bald monk ML keep you from reading this or you will be missing out on such a delightful and fun story. I am actually upset with myself for not reading this years ago when I put it on my TBR- I think I have to admit I was not sold on a bald ML at the time (quite shallow of me😔). I promise it will have absolutely zero impact on their chemistry or your enjoyment lol. I knew from the first few chapters this was going to be a favorite.
A dragon, a monk, and a ghost end up going on a mystery adventure to find some bones (among other things) and collecting a few crew members along the way. Shenanigans happen.
MC Xue Xian: an angry lil gremlin dragon, shameless, chaotic, irritable in a cute and goofy way, snarky, always trying to save his dignity, often feels "humiliated" or embarrased because he's a dignified and mighty dragon, paralyzed 💔
ML Xuanmin: monk, cold and aloof, has amnesia so he's a little bit of a mystery, so patient and subtle with his actions
What I loved about this novel: 🐉SO FUNNY, the banter and XX’s inner dialogue had me laughing out loud which I rarely do with books. I don't seek out books with humor but if it's there, I enjoy it. This novel hit the sweet spot with the amount of humor 🐉Smart/stoic/quiet monk x fiesty/mouthy dragon pairing-much like the Wangxian dynamic. XX can be so dumb (like WWX) misinterpreting or explaining away certain things XM does for him. He is also quite the unreliable narrator at times like Mo Ran 🐉Found family. Side characters are just as fun and entertaining as the MC. A scholar/bookworm ghost who is afraid of ghosts, a bratty ill-tempered kid who has a gift, and a talented coward stone mason 🐉Shares a universe with Panguan and Unseen Immortal of Three Hundred Years. While Panguan's focus is puppetry, Copper Coins is Feng shui. 🐉Slow burn. Seeing the shift in their relationship is so satisfying XX 🐉Mu Su Li is quickly moving up my list if trusted authors. I'll be reading Unseen Immortal soon!
Might not be for everybody, but if you want a fun xuanhuan novel with a dragon MC give this a try 🥰
Fairly short and 102 chapters and 1 extra. I am so excited to read the official translation when it comes out.
I freaking enjoy reading Copper Coins so much. This is my third danmei novel with a dragon character in it, and I'm telling you, if there's a dragon MC or ML in a story, there's going to be an angst. It's just a tiny part of the novel, but angst is still an angst. But for the most part, I just had a fun reading the interaction between the MC and ML, though it's mostly the MC who dominates the conversation (as the MC never shuts his mouth while the ML treasures his words so much)
There are a lot of great things that comprised this novel, but my most favorite part is the MC being an embarrassment throughout the series. He's a very mighty and dignified but paralyzed mystical dragon who loves saving his own face. He's hilariously arrogant, dramatic, whiny and unreasonable. He spouts a lot of nonsense that makes him so embarrassing but always self-conscious when it comes to losing his dignity. He is like when you're in public with a friend, but your friend is so shameless that you don't want to admit he's your friend. That's the kind of character he is. And his inner thoughts are so funny! He's actually one of the most enjoyable characters I've ever read, not just in danmei. On the other hand, the ML is an aloof, cold and amnesiac monk. What I liked the most about the him is his very mysterious identity. Him being amnesiac added more to the mystique since he himself didn't know much about his past. Also, in my opinion, the ML has a very huge patience when it comes to the MC and I respect that a lot. He expressed his exasperation towards MC's nonsense, sighing and shaking his head, but he still always indulged the unreasonable dragon, both in subtle and direct way. The MC is a chaotic character and can never stay still, but I think the ML is the most tired between them. The contrast in their personality is so fitting, like they're really made for each other. This couple actually reminded me so much of WangXian from MDZS, the MC and Wei Ying both being so chaotic and lively while the ML and Lan Zhan both being aloof and a man of few words.
The romance is slow, but it can never be done otherwise. I loved the slow progress of their relationship and it builds up in the right timing. The story is so good and the ending is so satisfying, not just to the couple but also to the supporting characters. Also, the pet crow who always complains about the couple's 'indecency' is so funny and likable!
All in all, a very worthwhile read and I highly recommend this novel so much!!
Soy fan.
In this world, some connections between people are difficult to explain –– where do they come from, and why, and is there an end to them?
Yet such feelings are strong, and as deep as tenderhooks; they seep into your skin and go right into your marrow –– from burgeoning romance at youth to growing old and tired together, such connections don't shatter even after a hundred years, and live on in the next life and the next.
i feel bad that i can’t convey how much i love this story, but i can tell you that it’s one of my most favorite reads from this year—no question about it. and that xue xian is a very dear and charming main character to me. and this is only my second read from mu su li, but they’re already a new favorite author of mine.
im absolutely obsessed with their writing style, and how much the lore they explore never feels like it drags the story at all. the pacing is always so well-done and the characters compelling that you just get wrapped up in it.
i’m really happy i could read this book in full before 7seas releases their translation of it in the fall. for some reason, unlike with their other licenses, and even though i didn’t have a complete idea of what i was signing up for—i saw 7seas’ cover reveal on twitter and everyone’s buzz and felt an immediate tug towards this story. i couldn’t wait for more than a few months, and so immediately got my hands on a fan translation while i still could. and it was sooo worth it.
I am officially a Mu Su Li STAN. I love her writing so much. As a WangXian lover, I saw SO much of both Lan Zhan and Wei Ying in this novel. This novel had me captured the whole time. I looked forward to every chapter and it had a really great flow. While I could sometimes guess where the plot was going, there were some great surprises. I really loved them and this story and it just left my heart warm and happy when I finished. Not to mention, it had me LAUGHING. Xue Xian is such a chaotic goober and I love him so much.
This is my second book from Mu Su Li, the first being A Certain Someone, and I love both of them. A supernatural mystery and at the same time, a slow-burn romance between a monk and a fallen dragon, the novel gripped me from start to finish. The fast-paced actions following one weird mystery to another make for a very entertaining read. But what I love most are the characters. From the two MCs to the side characters, the 3 companions, the whole cast is cute, lovable and memorable, and I found myself care so much about them.
This is an author to keep. My next read from them should be Global University Entrance Exam. I heard a lot of good things about it.
Don't get me wrong, I've really enjoyed this novel - it's a fast read, once you get going, and the writing isn't cluttered or heavy, if anything, it's a bit too light for my preferences. And that's why it didn't reach 4 stars, for me. This was too light. And it was too juvenile. And somethings were too easy, too unrealistic, too forced, for me. I liked the characters, and felt there was so much potential to both of them - especially Xuanmin, there was so much the author could have done with the bare bones they set for this character, but in the end, it was a chance wasted. There was hardly anything to them both, they lacked substance, their story lacked substance, their love especially lacked substance. There was no falling in love, no pining for each other, no lust (other than that crap about the dragon spit, a gimmick I found rather annoying, an easy way out to insert a bit of smut and physical intimacy between the two MCs). The romance goes from nothing to 'I will give my life for you, I will die for you' in what feels like crashing speed, with absolutely no in between - not to mention the fact Xue Xian is so quick to 'forgive the wrongs' he believes Xuanmin did him and understand just exactly what is going on. I think the problem with this novel is that it's too short, and the author didn't really know how to go from the extreme slow burn they were giving the readers to the satisfying conclusion and the subsequent get together of the MCs. You can have a short novel with a slow burn romance that still tugs at every cord of your being, and you can have a really long novel with a really slow burn affair and do the exact same thing to your readers - it's just a matter of consistency. And that's what's lacking here. The general plot, too, I felt like I'd read hundreds of books with that exact same theme, so it felt a little used up and stale, for me, though it was a fun plot, again, with potential to it that the author didn't know how to make use of. I think they may be rather young and immature in their writing, for it felt like that to me. If that's the case, I do believe this is one author with the potential to grow and gift the readers with really great stories, but they need time to get there. All in all, it was a promising tale, with promising characters and it was still fun to read.
We have another winner! This is the 2nd danmei novel I've read that revolves around a dragon being one of the main characters. The premise was intriguing and the main characters were different because one of them was a monk (Xuanmin, who's the MC) and the other was a de-boned dragon (Xue Xian, who's the ML).
The words one would use to describe Xuanmin are cold and aloof, while Xue Xian would be straightforward and arrogant. Together, XM and XX made an interesting pair because in the beginning, they were like oil and water. I wouldn't say they bickered a lot, it was more like XX was doing whatever he wanted to just to make things more difficult for XM. However, as the story progressed, XM and XX grew closer to each other and the bond between them strengthened.
One of my favourite things about this novel is the found family trope. They were a rag-tag bunch that worked together to solve mysteries and look for XX's dragon bones and despite the differences, they ended up being close friends after going through life and death situations. The side characters were interesting as well and complemented the MCs and made the story more light-hearted.
The final arc was so unexpected to me, like when I was reading it I was so afraid that it'd end up in a BE but thankfully, the author gave us a HE. It was actually so angsty that I felt my heart kind of breaking when /that/ happened. Nevertheless, I'm so relieved that everyone lived happily ever after because I would've been so mad otherwise.
I think this should have been partly categorized as a comedy because Xue Xian is hysterical. His interactions with everyone are seamless and effortlessly funny, but with Xuan Min, they seem to just bounce off of each other. Out of everyone, Xuan Min seems to acclimatize the quickest to Xue Xian’s nonsense and follow him on his wavelength.
The side characters were really well done, and I especially liked the plot with Nineteen and Twenty-Seven. It was devastating, but so sweet how they finally reunited in the end.
Even Tongdeng got the chance to reunite with his old friend after years of being unseen and unheard.
I loved this series. It had a lot of depth from the comedy to the sheer devastation of realizing who it was that maimed Xue Xian, and I liked the range that the author demonstrated.
Really incredible read.

TW: —Main story: 1) A few moments of ableism (not all having to do w/ MC—who is disabled for a time—but there was one instance in particular that made me side-eye MC & ML’s interaction. I probably would have been triggered if the MC had reacted negatively but he didn’t. His riot of a personality just wasn’t taking anyone’s shit and he said so and did something about it.) 2) Dubcon/Noncon in a sex pollen/fuck or die way | Handjob: I think this speaks for itself. —Extra: 3) Colorism (Like you can’t say this in a pretty way or cover it up. It is what it is. It’s in the dialogue as an off-handed remark but at least it’s just the extra which surprised me because it seemed…random and weird?)
Overall, I loved the plot! The plot building is kinda slow but it’s worth it. I also thought the plot twist was pretty original and I was happy this got a HE.
But I loved the characters more than the plot ngl. This is one of those—“I read for the characters as opposed to the plot” unlike 2HA where I didn’t like some of the characters and am struggling to get through b/c I love the plot but the characters have been a hit or miss. The danmei is also very funny. Like ngl I laughed a number of times and I love that the MC calls the ML “bald donkey” throughout the entirety of the novel and even tries to unlearn to call him that but I know that some folks don’t like that. The translation was pretty good, I think? The translation notes made me laugh too.
Idk why some ppl compare this to MDZS when the plot is NOTHING alike. Don’t mislead folks the way I was mislead to believe 2HA was like MDZS…
If you ever wanted to read about a mouthy heavenly dragon and a quiet but sarcastic buddhist monk fall in love while they travel around collecting the dragons bones while drowning you in yearning, this is the book for you.
3.5 stars. A fun read with an interesting and mischievous MC, but I still felt that there was something missing. There are big love gestures when the story reaches its' climax, and although beautiful, they feel a bit sudden, like the protagonists' relationship still hadn't reached a point where such actions would be warranted. It's tricky to write about aloof divine beings like the MC and extremely stoic/cold and expressionless characters like the ML falling in love. But anyway, the last chapters are super sweet and I felt captivated by all characters and their journeys regardless (including the secondary ones).
I admire Mu Su Li's ability to write widely different plots in each of their novels, and although Global Examination remains my favorite, I haven't been disappointed so far.
A fun and mysterious romp with a snarky troublemaking dragon and a stoic & amnesiac monk. The story started slow but slowly gained ground as each arc was unraveled. Loved the last few chapters the most and the slow burn was worth it. The side characters were memorable and contributed a lot to the shape and feel of the story. Magical dragon spit, an intelligent mutant crow, soothsayers and ghosts all make this one a highly entertaining read!
This book starts with an interesting premise but simply nosedives beyond 20%. I couldn’t bring myself to care about the protagonists. They’re not fleshed out enough to feel invested in their story.
This has to be one of the best babe! Just perfect!
Chaotic Dragon Drama Queen x Aloof Amnesiac Monk
Has all the great fanfic tropes!
There was only one bed, pining, found family....
And many more!
Ok seriously~
It’s a mystery-filled, action packed, angsty-yet-humorous book. It has both sad and sweet moments, hilarious shenanigans straight out of a crack fanfic, and showcases meaningful connections between people. It leaves you wanting more, wishing you read it slower just so you could stay in the same world as the characters for just a little bit longer...
Sometimes a family can be a drama queen of a dragon, his frowny monk husband who (kinda) looks like the great priest, their bookworm friend who still hasn’t departed for the afterlife, a half blind psychic who recieved his powers from his brother, and a terrified middle aged man who got dragged into all this because he carved a sword from dragon bone:) sounds like a recipe for disaster, amirite:>
An aloof-amnesic-mysterious monk, who roaming around looking for someone, met a paralyzed extra-drama-queen heavenly dragon, who turns the earth up side down looking for his bones, electrifying slow burn romance ensued! XDD
Rating: 3/5 - A good mystery, but the rushed and nonsensical romance at the end prevented this book from being a good read for me. Beware of my rant below (usually rare for me to rant as much as I did for this book)
The novel is well written and well paced and the characters are kinda likeable and interesting but very 2D for being lead characters. When I read this it felt like I was reading shadows of Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan, but really weak, poorly constructed 1D versions of them. They aren’t memorable at all, but the side characters were cool.
SPOILER ALERT!
For the first time in my history of reading BL, I felt that this book was not suited to be a BL. The chemistry and relationship was not slowburn, it was honestly non-existent and rather nonsensical. For them to suddenly end up together felt really forced and unnatural. When you talk about slowburn romance you think Golden Stage, HOB, Tattoo, MDZS and even quite frankly Little Mushroom (this is one of my all-time favorite slow burns) There’s substance, subtlety, chemistry, underlying hints of awareness in one another for one another- but the pairing and romance grows with each page and you can see how the couple is forming. But this! I was left scratching my head as to how they went from dragon paper man and monk with mysophobia to together for eternity in 90 chapters, when they hadn’t even so much as had a natural, chemistry fuelled kiss let alone chemistry fuelled interaction not affected by dragon spit.
Like just stop right there.
My opinion is probably rare, but this story was strong on its own as a mystery novel with good friendship between the leads. The friendships between all the characters was beautiful and the mission to uncover the truth flowed wonderfully. And that’s where the good review for this novel starts and ends.
Throughout the course of the book, it’s never EVER depicted, let alone NATURALLY occurring that the main leads are genuinely starting to fall in love. The author then suddenly threw a random jerk off session induced by dragon spit before they even kissed- just how on earth would a monk be the one to initiate such a thing in the first place? Also they had never met each other before, how can this strong “I want to be with you for eternity” type of love suddenly bear an existence after all they did was uncover some bones and a few mysteries. The guy has amnesia for crying out loud and he’s a MONK!!!! He has the sexual awakening of a 5ml teaspoon!
What nonsense! What utter rubbish!
The actions need to suit the character and BL suited neither. To suddenly have the last 10 chapters rush through a relationship of 30 years that became “to live and die together” was a joke. It needed at least another 100 chapters of significant material between the leads to have such a poetic ending really make sense and feel satisfying. I found myself laughing when I saw the ending. This book ended for me when the mystery was tied up. Like stop reading after there if you’re not interested in comedy.
That silly ending of happily ever with sacrificial love was such a mood killer when nothing contributed to it? Like who? Where? HOW!!!!
And it’s not like you’ll be missing anything if you skip the last 10 or so chapters because the book before that is not BL, it’s just a normal mystery novel! (Don’t even include that s*upid jerk off session coz that was ludicrous and so cringey that it doesn’t even count)
It almost felt like the author tried to create some fairytale epic love but it just flopped, because it was just notions of a relationship built up in the sky but no substance to support it in the novel. Even with that connection from the copper coins, you can’t just magically enforce feelings onto a person using magic and aphrodisiacs. Especially if it’s Shounen Ai- there’s no basis for such a poetic love story. Poetic endings need just that- POETRY! Not mystery, mystery, catch the bad guy- die for one without telling the other- oh really, he loves me- we love each other- monk has sudden sexual awakening of a gigolo- the end.
Also this is a novel not a comic. *rolls eyes so hard* Perhaps if the novel was longer and the dynamics between the characters were explored more and worked on delicately, it would have worked out. It would have been more believable for Xue Xian to end up with Jiang Shi Ning than Xuan Min in all honesty.
I get that many BL pairings are not always the most realistic, but usually the elements of romance almost always hit the mark. This disappointed me on that front and I’m usually not one to avoid BL pairings. (I mean isn’t that the point of BL. We read about these beautiful romances with wonderfully characteristic and wholesome men that show the wonders of falling in love with the same sex! Or is that not why there are fujoshi?) But don’t pair people together for the hell of it. Relationships with no substance are no relationship at all and this book has left me feeling sour- so just let me vent!
It’s a good read overall, but expect a major disappointment in the relationship if you’re like me and like substantial well developed romance in a slow-burn.
