Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.

Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.

She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.

Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the
rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.

She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.

With each installment in the Emerson Pass series, I become more immersed and more in love with the Barnes family and the community of their small Colorado town. The Problem Child features Cymbeline, the "problem child" of the family, who is free-spirited, brave, and determined to live her life on her own terms. She and Viktor have known each other since they were kids, and he'd always been her nemesis, the boy she loved to beat in any sport--but now they are grown, and she's wondering about the feelings she now has for Viktor, the man who has always loved her. The story takes place in 1925, a time of great change all over the world, and Cymbeline is bound to see some of that change come to Emerson Pass, beginning with letting her compete against men in a ski jump competition. I loved Cymbeline so much--she was such a big personality, and she needed someone to love her for who she was, someone who wouldn't quash her ambitions, who would always stand up for her and love her. I loved Viktor, too, for being a man who is loyal, kind, and helpful--and who loves Cymbeline for exactly who she is. There were other highly compelling storylines in this book regarding other members of the Barnes family, and of course the setting of Emerson Pass is a big part of every story, setting the stage for all of the books in the series.

“ To be by your side while you conquer the world would be more than enough for me.”

I have been waiting for Cymbelline’s story. This is the fourth installment of the Emerson Pass historical series, set in 1920. While there are not a lot of opportunities for woman, Cymbelline continues to push the boundaries to increase opportunities for woman, and her nemesis Viktor seems to be her cheerleading squad, standing right bedside her as she continues to make strides .

Viktor has always been her nemesis but she’s also in love with him. He will do anything for her. He wants her to shine brightly, even though her dreams could take her away from him.
Will she realize what she wants before it’s too late? Or will she realize love is the greatest adventure after all!

We also get to catch up with the whole Barnes family, Flynn seems to be involved with something over his head, Addie is extremely sick, Fiona may have feelings for Li…. And through it all this family does what family does, support and love each other.
Cymbelline definitely has been a character that has been the most fun to follow. She has a beautiful heart and spirit. I fell in love with Viktor during this book. These two will either be the perfect for each other or the one that destroys the other !
This is Tess Thompson at her best, love, family, faith, unforgettable characters and I can’t wait for the next installment to catch up with this amazing family !

Tess Thompson has brought us back to Emerson Pass in another phenomenal story from the Barnes' family past. I love returning to this series whether it's the historical fiction or contemporary novels...they are just wonderful reads. Ms. Thompson's talent to bring the reader into the settings, emotions and events of the characters is what makes her novels must reads for me.

The Problem Child?? Not Cymbeline Barnes! Oh, yes! This is the story many of us have been waiting for. We all have a little bit of Cymbeline in us...and that's what makes her so easy to relate to. She's been a nonconformist her whole life. She's a determined, self-confident, competitive, not afraid to put herself out there member of the Barnes family. Ms. Thompson takes us to the past in the Barnes family life in the early 1900s of Emerson Pass. I absolutely love returning to this family and the setting of Emerson Pass in this series.

Viktor and Cymbeline have been rivals their whole lives. At least that's how Cymbeline looked at it. Viktor has always thought of her differently. He is her biggest supporter and his compassion and heart for her starts to chip through her independent exterior. Viktor..."She challenged me in ways I'd not thought possible and had done so for a decade and then some." Ms. Thompson pulls at my heart so well in her development of Viktor and Cymbeline's relationship. She writes their story filled with emotions that connected me to these characters.

Not only does Ms. Thompson focus on the main characters in this story, she brings the whole family intertwined throughout. No matter what, the family is there for each other. There is a wild west vibe that brings some drama to the town of Emerson Pass. How will the towns people come together to protect what has been so carefully created as a place of peace and tranquility for all who live there? She also has real life issues that she gently and compassionately brings the characters through. Situations that are heart wrenching and poignant. Yet the Barnes family never give up and are always there for each other.

Ms. Thompson's attention to detail, both in her characters and settings, is intricate and descriptive. She pulls the words from her heart and places them in her characters who become like family to me. The scenes are written with details that create perfect images in my mind. An author who not only puts words on pages but she has the ability to put them in my heart.

I love to disappear into the Emerson Pass world and spend time with the people who live there. It's a wonderful escape and a wonderful way to spend time in a book! I want to thank Ms. Thompson for the privilege and honor of reading another great book. I loved it! All thoughts and opinions in this review are my heartfelt own.

Bentornate a Emerson Pass, Fenici!

quattro stelle

I think one reason why I have fallen in love with the Barnes family in the Emerson Pass Historicals series is that the characters are like people that many of us know. The Problem Child, Cymbeline, is coming of age in this volume and wants to stand out from the crowd in a positive way, but life for women at that time had few options. Part of the conundrum is her new attraction to the former classmate who was considered to be her nemesis all her life. He has been attracted to her for all the years they've known each other, but she was not inclined to settling down to the traditional role of wife. I love how each of the characters in this series demonstrates love for family, the community, and their one special person. The next book in the series will come in the spring, and I will surely be a reader, but today there was a release of a Christmas novella that dovetails from this one

I just finished reading The Problem Child, book #4 in the Emerson Pass historical series by Tess Thompson. What a great way to spend a quiet shift today at work, my last shift of 2021.

From the cover to the story inside, you really get swept up into the triumphs and struggles of the Barnes family (especially Cymbeline). I loved Cym and Viktor and seeing BOTH their points of view. I also liked how Cymbeline was so bold and outspoken and how Viktor didn't try to tame her, he loved her for who she was.

Put this series on your list if you enjoy historical fiction!

A book about Cymbeline one of the Barnes children that makes her own path in life. She is strong willed and doesn’t want to be held back just because she is a woman. She has been friends with Viktor and young man she loves to compete with whenever she can. Her brother Flynn decided to have a new race just for men but Cymbeline is NOT having it. She decided she will enter the race anyway she can.

Tess Thompson writes stories that warm your heart. The Problem Child is about Emerson Pass’s favorite rebel, Cymbeline Barnes. In this delightful story, Cym pushes back against the notion that a woman doesn’t belong participating in activities that have been dominated by men. As she plots to pursue her passion, she finds support in unlikely places. When her family is faced with adversity, Cymbeline takes action and an entire community pulls together. This historical tale is filled with with family, heart and hope!

This one wasn't my favourite of the series. It felt rushed and a bit incoherent, as if Tess Thompson had too many ideas and not enough book. I was disappointed because the story jumped around a lot and didn't focus on Cymbeline enough. The story became too much about Flynn and the gin factory, which spoiled the story for me. Not the author best effort, or what I'd come to expect from her. Disappointing.

Tess takes us back to Emerson Pass in this, the fourth in the series. The story continues. This time it's Cymbeline's story. Hers and Viktors. These two have always been destine for each other. Even as youngsters they were very competitive. Cym is a winner at most all she does and she never runs from anything. She is not shy by any means.

When Viktor and Cymbeline finally take their friendship to another level it's magic. Viktor loves that Cym is a competent young woman who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. Things during this time, the twenties, are not fair for females. They are not to compete or do anything that is out of the "norm." Just stay home and be little Suzie homemakers in a sense. Have babies and wait on the men. But this is not what Cym wants. She wants to compete in a skiing event that her brother is holding.

When trouble comes to Emerson Pass the town stands united to help out the Barnes family. No one can just come in and destroy the beauty that this town has worked hard to build. Or can they. Can someone actually take away what belongs to Emerson Pass residents? A town united may not be enough. A group of men trying to defend things. Maybe it will take more.

Then when a child gets sick and they almost lose her what will happen. Can they save her before it is too late? Will anyone be able to figure out what is happening? There is a bit of drama going on in this book. Emerson Pass is having a rough time in a few ways.

Children born. Families split. Pain inflicted. What will become of this community? Who or what will save them?

It's wonderful. Endearing. Heartwarming. Sad and yes a bit of a tearjerker in parts. Also a couple of laughs to keep you smiling. This book is well written and makes you feel so many things. Emerson Pass is a great place to live and raise a family. This is a very fast read. At least it was for me. I couldn't put it down.

I received an ARC of this beautiful book from the author in exchange for my honest review. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

5/5 stars and a very high recommendation. Read this one. Read the whole series.

Love is the grandest adventure!

Oh, I just love these trips to the Emerson Pass of a hundred years ago! The Barnes family have established an idyllic, small town community and they're willing to fight to keep it that way. This wonderful story not only gives us the romance of Viktor and Cymbeline (finally!) but we also get updated on everything going on with all the siblings, spouses, and extended families.

Cymbeline has always thought of herself as the problem child, a free-spirited young woman who chafed at society's confining expectations and dared to live life on her own terms. At her core, she loves her family and that's what keeps her grounded. She's finally ready to admit to herself that her feelings for her "nemesis," Viktor, are deeper than she thought.

I loved the way Viktor not only accepted her eccentricities, but defended her at every turn and created a safe space for her to feel seen and appreciated. His steadfast devotion gave their romance a rock-solid foundation and I adored him all the more for it.

The "problem child" moniker also fits her brother, Flynn, and this story is almost as much about him as it is about Cym's and Viktor's relationship. Flynn finds himself at a crossroads in pursuing his ambitions, and his decisions have costly consequences. I love how this author weaves all the various community stories into each individual standalone romance.

We're also given just enough of a hint about the next book's romance, and I can't wait for the next visit to this delightful historical world. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

The Problem Child By Tess Thompson

5 stars

Cymbeline Barnes has always been a handful. Anything boys can do, she can do too. That has always been her. She is now grown up and when a competition comes to Emerson Pass she can't help herself. Viktor, her nemesis for years, has always been a simple man. He has also always wanted Cymbeline, and not as a nemesis. He is her biggest fan. He just has to get her to see that.

When danger comes Viktor, Cymbeline, and the whole of Emerson Pass find themselves fighting the bad that has come to their community and in doing so shows the love and frienship of a small town.

Oh, how I have waited for this book. Cymbeline has been one of my favorites from the first time I read about her. She was always wild, precocious, and brave. She was never afraid to take on the boys. As an adult she is even more wonderful. The relationship between her an Viktor is beautiful and is one that brings such love and romance to the pages. It was so fun to watch the back and forth between them through the years.

This book was amazing. It was full of romance and a fair bit of danger and drama, but as always it shows love, family, trust, and forgiveness. It left me wanting more, as it always does, of Emerson Pass and the gentle folks that reside there. I can't wait for the next book!

Voto 5/5 😍

The Problem Child is a fantastic read. This is the fourth book in the Emerson Pass Historicals and is everything I wanted and then some when it comes to Cymbeline's book. Cymbeline is the daughter who likes to push boundaries. She does not want to be told she cannot do something because she is a girl. I love her drive and how she pushes everything to prove she can do anything a man can do and sometimes better. Viktor has been in love with Cymbeline forever. He is going to make you swoon as Viktor proves to Cymbeline over and over again that he loves her just the way she is and will support her in everything she does. This is a book filled with family love, pushing the boundaries and proving that a woman can do anything. Your heart will be stolen several times over as the Barnes family faces many challenges. This is by far my favorite book yet. I love Cymbeline and her spirit so much. I could not get enough of this one. I cannot wait for Fiona's book next. Tess Thompson knows how to bring the historical romance to life. Go one click this one and the rest of the Emerson Pass Historicals if you haven't had a chance to yet.

Author Tess Thompson's fourth book in the magical Emerson Pass Historical Series, is another page turning masterpiece! The close knit Barnes family has always stood strong against any adversity that comes their way but what could they do when one of their own is strong-willed and determined to prove to the world that women can do everything that men can do? Daughter Cymbeline has always had a competitive nature but her main adversary, Viktor Olofsson, tends to bring it out more. Considering herself as the problem child, Cymbeline is surprised to admit that she is in love with Viktor. It looks as if another one of the Barnes siblings will be flying the coop soon!
With more twist and turns, The Problem Child brings more secrets to the surface, but can the Barnes clan be able to save one of their own?
Author Tess Thompson is such a talented writer! As soon as I read the first page, I was hooked and will be anxiously awaiting another bestseller from one of my favorite authors! I was given this ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review! All thoughts and opinions are truly my own!

It was wonderful to be back home! Emerson Pass and the Barnes family have been dearly missed. And I firmly believe that Emerson Pass is a real place and the Barnes family are real people. Nothing anybody can say will change my mind! Tess Thompson continues her story of the Barnes family with Cymbeline and Viktor. If you are smart and have read the previous books then you know that these two were destined to be together. And while the problem child, aka symbolin, is determined to make her place in a male world she is hard-pressed to continue to push Victor away. Especially when he keeps agreeing with everything she says! But probably the big difference in this book as opposed to the others in the Emerson Pass series is the community. Thompson has drawn the community into the Barnes family. The Barnes family has built the community and everyone is independently living their best life thanks to Lord Barnes but now they all need each other. The story is wonderfully written and puts the reader right in the middle of the Barne's house. And you will never want to leave!

Tess Thompson has written this beautiful series of Emerson Pass that draws the reader in, and makes them feel like they are a member of the Barnes family. Cymbeline Barnes is a character that speaks to my soul. She has this spirit about her that just sings. She's feisty and charismatic. Her longing for adventure can be felt. She fights for what she believes in while living in a time period where women are taught to keep their thoughts and opinions to themselves. A period where women are to just to look pretty and birth babies. While Cymbeline believes in family, she wants the same opportunities that men so easily acquire.
Viktor is Cymbeline's match in every way. He loves her for who she is, and would not darken her spirit anyway. His loyalty to the Barnes family is proven over and over again.
Tess Thompson writes a story that literally brings you into the pages, transports you into Emerson Pass, and gives you a family you never knew you needed.

Another great win in the Emerson Pass Series. The author’s writing style is full of descriptive words and passages to help the reader paint a vivid picture of the action. The Barnes family continues to work hard to provide strength, leadership, and support to the community.

Cymbeline has always been full of energy, and considered Viktor Olofsson as a competitor. However, she finally realizes Viktor is the person who will allow her to be herself and support her in her life. He is content to be by her side, supporting Cymbeline in all he endeavors.

The Barnes family has issues to contend with, including the health of their young daughter, and the issues brought into the community by the greed of Flynn, and his decision to bring a distillery into the community. Lives hang in the balance as the family struggles to support each other. Family continues to be important in the community.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

Finally Cymbeline’s story in the Emerson Pass Historicals series is here! I love Tess Thompson’s series about the small town of Emerson Pass, and have been so excited to read more about Cymbeline.

Set in the time when women were supposed to be good girls that got married and had babies, Cymbeline is definitely a rebel, always in search of the adventure of her lifetime. This is what makes me love her character so much - she’s not content to just settle and do what society asks of her, she wants to do what she wants to do. In this book, she does just that - with a few twists.

The Problem Child has a lot more conflict and violence than most of the other books, and I was definitely here for that. It adds so much more intrigue and suspense to the story.

Every book Tess Thompson writes is a home run, and I can’t wait to read the next one!

Delightful and heartwarming story!

Finally we got our loved rebellious Cymbeline’s story! And what a wonderful story it was! So happy being able to visit this beautiful small town Emerson Pass again and meet all the fantastic characters Barnes’s family and friends.
Cymbeline symbolises a torch in the dark figuratively for all the women that they can do the same things as men are supposed to do. At the same time we see how she shows more and more of her soft side and she accepted her heart’s feelings.
Cymbeline and Viktor are the best suited couple if ever there is one! Viktor is a one wonderful man you can only admire him.
“Love is the greatest adventure” admit and accept it and give in!
Tess Thompson writes such heartfelt stories you can only fall in love with! This one is not an exception. It’s a must read and love it!

This was the story I was waiting for! Cymbeline Barnes is such a strong character and Tess did her justice! Cymbeline Barns and Viktor Olofsson have been friends since Quinn started teaching at the first school in Emmerson Pass. Cymbeline is such a head strong young woman which during the twenties is frowned upon. Viktor has always loved Cymbeline because of her spirit and challenges her. Aside from watching how Cymbeline finally realizes what a blessing and adventure love is, this story weaves in the battle for a sick child, and the town coming together to protect the community they have built. This book is such a wonderful example of how far we have come and the bravery of those who push to be who they are and want to be. Absolutely loved it! I have a feeling the next book will be just as good of a page turner.

Cym and Viktor story

I started this book with a groan. Cym was my least favorite character. Viktor, despite his bravery saving the sisters at different timess, was mainly a one dimensional character for me. I was happily wrong. Again the talents of this author and character development is awesome. Within 20 minutes I was hooked.

Part of the storyline revolved around a ski jump built in Emerson Pass. That story was very interesting to me. I grew up in southeastern South Dakota. A small town, Canton, had a ski jump in the same time period. It ran for about 30 years. It even hosted a contest that chose the Olympic ski jumpers for the USA. My grandfather helped create the jump. The storyline was factually correct about a lot of the story. The author does a good job on fact investigation. Another great book in the series.
