Continuing the “Director’s Cut” of the Enemy Within Campaign, this sourcebook is meant to accompany the Death on the Reik adventure, and follows the same general format as the previous Companion volume in the series.
It begins with some designer’s notes and easter eggs followed by a couple of “Deleted Scenes” in the form of a couple of encounters that were in the original adventure, but cut from the current edition.
Next is a description of the major rivers of the Empire, followed by rules for navigating those rivers. A description of the Imperial River Patrol includes stat blocks for some sample patrol members. This leads into a long section of sample NPCs including fellow travellers and riverfolk.
A chapter on the Imperial Semaphore Service describes the project behind one of the key locations in the adventure.
Continuing the focus on the river, rules covering ship customization are included. Also, trading rules are included along with the information needed to apply them throughout the area the campaign covers. It would have been nice if information had been included for other areas of the Empire, but that would have been a lot of work and pages dedicated to information unrelated to the adventure.
Wreckers, smugglers and pirates get some coverage, continuing with sample NPCs. Non-human threats on the river get a bestiary. Waterborne diseases round out the general information on river travel.
A chapter covers the new Chaos cult the Red Crown, with cultist stats, new spells, and a new career for the cult. A lot of the information in this chapter builds off the information on the Purple Hand found in the previous companion volume.
A description of the luxury liner Emperor Luitpold provides details on a random encounter or future setting for an adventure. It doesn’t include any suggestions on how to integrate it into the campaign, but is an interesting location on its own.
Finally, Vengeance of the Gravelord purports to be the first part of a potential ongoing B plot for the campaign. I thought it was fairly underwhelming. It’s obviously just foreshadowing for future events. I do appreciate that the writers included multiple ways to deal with a key plot point not going according to plan without straight up railroading the players.
Overall, another solid companion to the campaign. My only concern is the trend with this edition to make most sourcebooks this semi-random hodgepodge of information. It makes sense as a companion to the campaign, but other recent publications seem to indicate it’s become a pattern.

Excellent companion both for the Death On the Reik adventure specifically and for river-based campaigns in the Empire more generally. Full review: https://refereeingandreflection.wordp...
