Al Ader is dying and doesn’t have much time left. Determined to leave a legacy behind, he devises a plan to mystify the masses…and the authorities. Armed with a bomb, he hijacks a commercial airliner on Thanksgiving Eve of 1971. If he can survive long enough, he might solidify his place in history as a folk hero.
Robin Kraft is getting married, if she can make it through this flight. As authorities scramble to intervene, Robin must comply with Al’s demands if she is going to keep her passengers—and herself—safe and alive.
Fundamental disagreements between the airline’s owner and FBI agents about how to handle the situation only further endanger everyone involved. Caught on opposite sides of a deadly dance in midair, Al and Robin must form a devil’s pact where no matter what happens, Al won’t get out alive. The only question is, how many people will he take out with him before he goes?
Clarke Mayer is a filmmaker, photographer, and writer from New Jersey. Most of his day is dominated by a Black Mouth Cur named Pam who doesn’t ever run out of energy. He likes to write, hike, and run, but most of all he likes to read and watch crime, spy, horror, and thriller stories.
Clarke Mayer delivers a heart-pounding thrill ride that paints a beautiful picture of feminine power and a sympathetic Villain that truly pays homage to the legend of D.B.Cooper.
I’m not much of a reader but once I got my hands on this book I couldn’t put it down. The characters are rich with flavor and Mayer’s ability to take you to the edge of your seat and then keep you there chapter after chapter is a true testament to his story telling ability. I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind reimagining of D.B. Cooper; filled with Easter Eggs it’s a thrill ride start to finish, an easy read that doesn’t disappoint.
This was a little out of my ball park but Clarke Mayer can certainly write and his prose and talent for storytelling is what kept me enthralled to the end. More of a ‘whydunnit’ rather than the usual ‘whodunnit’ detective story, Mayer weaves a tale encompassing the hijacker, the pilot, a stewardess and others involved, delving into their thoughts and emotions and making you warm to all the characters which keeps you reading and turning the page.
While I’m more of a spy novel and nonfiction reader, this book really appealed to me and Mayer’s talent as a writer shines through and propels you forward with ease. And with a new Netflix documentary on D.B. Cooper, this book makes the perfect accompany to delve further into mystery. High recommended and like others have mentioned, an easy read. In fact, I read it on a dash across the pacific to Fiji (from Australia).
Incendiary tackles one of the greatest mysteries in American history...the tale of DB Cooper. But there is something interesting going on here as Mayer makes a choice and fictionalizes the story. This allows the book to follow a complete narrative without all the who-dunnit speculation and theorizing.
If you're a Cooper fanatic, Mayer laces in a trove of Easter Eggs for your enjoyment but also allows you to experience the story from a completely different perspective. If you have no idea who DB Cooper was, it's a thrill ride from beginning to end.
This is well paced thriller with some memorable characters and nail-biting moments along the way. Mayer sticks the landing on this one and I'll be checking out what he has for us in the future.
Great quick and most entertaining read. The book reads like a movie taking you through perspectives of each character during the journey which is Al's spectacular performance.
I highly recommend this easy ready for anyone looking for a entertaining story that is well written and could easily end up as a major movie release. I couldn't help but picture a Die Hard type film in the eye of my mind as I read through each chapter.
One of the most enduring mysteries in the Oregon mythos is the story of DB Cooper and his bizarre hijacking in 1971, which ended in his parachuting to an unknown fate with $200,000 ransom.
In Incendiary, Mayer's brings this event to life, with a plausible backstory and spectacular characterization of the many players in the drama. Any time that we consider a notorious crime, we're left wondering what could possibly motivate someone to commit it. Mayer gives us one very convincing explanation for this particular crime, and it makes for a wild ride from the first page to the last.
