This is my absolute favorite of the series. The hero, Whiddon, feels he has good reason for not letting the heroine, Charlotte, in. So it's fun to watch how she manages to dismantle the walls he sets up, one brick at a time. The mystery is interesting, the romance is tempestuous, and the end is heartwarming. You can't beat a story like this!

Miss Charlotte Mayne is in London for one reason and that is to find a husband. She and her maiden aunt have scraped up enough money for one season and she hopes to find a man who will be willing to support her and her younger siblings. But things are not progressing as she would have hoped, especially since her nasty cousin seems bent on ruining any chances she may have. She meets Gabriel Harris, Earl of Whiddon when she escapes to the terrace during a ball. Gabriel is smoking a vile-smelling cigar and she rightly guesses it is to keep people away. They strike up a conversation and she learns that he never wants to marry, but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying his company.

After that meeting, Gabriel watches out for her and on more than one occasion sees her cousin sabotaging her, so he steps in and dances with her, which seems to open the door for other suitors. He knows he should keep his distance, but he can’t seem to stay away and when they are caught in a compromising position, he proposes a marriage in name only.

Charlotte agrees, to a point, she wants more but is willing to wait for it. Slowly, she weaves herself into his life, first by setting his house to rights, despite his reasons for keeping it barely habitable, and then by getting him to share some of his tightly held secrets, including his ongoing mission to right the wrongs done by his father. At first, Gabriel tries to resist, but soon he can no longer deny his feelings and it seems like these two will find their HEA, but when an old advisory teams up with Charlotte’s cousin, their blossoming love will be tested.

What a great story! Of all the books in this series, I think this is my favorite, I just loved Charlotte and Gabriel and their road to HEA was filled with emotion, betrayal, secrets, lies, cameos from previous characters, truly evil villains, steamyish love scenes, and a little bit of heartache all wrapped up in a well-written, fast-paced story. This is the fifth book in the series, but it could easily be read as a standalone title.

Decent story. The hero is afraid of love because love always fails, in his experience. Or the ppl who should have loved him have always failed him. So it’s easier to stay cold and aloof. He is determined to keep his distance from his wife and she is equally determined to get close.

Safe. I was very glad that the hero’s past wasn’t mentioned in this book, and it didn’t come off as if he was a manwhore. Heroine is innocent and belongs only to the hero. No others, no cheating or abuse. HEA with epilogue but it was only a couple months out and no babies. I wanted a better HEA

Deb Marlowe’s “Why Do Earls Fall in is book 5 in the “A Series of Unconventional Courtships” series. Deb Marlowe is a new author to me but one I’ll be reading much more of in the future!

Gabriel Harris, Earl of Whiddon is the last one of his friends to remain unmarried and he’s determined to keep the status quo. Having suffered through a difficult childhood he has seen marriage go horribly wrong.

The impoverished Miss Charlotte Mayne is In London for her season in hopes of finding a husband and helping her family. Charlotte past has been difficult as well and unfortunately she has some really nasty relatives. Gabriel is a savior, he can’t help but save those he finds in distress and when he finds himself in a compromising position with Charlotte he marries her. What starts out as a marriage of convenience turns into so much more.

I love Charlotte, she’s strong, capable, intelligent and determined. Gabriel was equally as enjoyable he just needed a good woman behind him. With great characters, wonderful dialogue, and an adventurous storyline the author weaves a book sure to please. Gabriel and Charlotte have wonderful chemistry and it does get a bit steamy. This is a fantastic story with characters your love and dastardly villains you will love to hate.

Thank you so much Ms. Marlowe for this exciting romance and love story of two people so meant for one another.

This book is a 10+ star in my opinion.. This is my 3rd story by Deb and oh my goodness it was sooooooooo good.. Gabriel is determined not to ever wed due to his family history and she needs to marry with money to help her family. Her devious cousin set up for her ruin hoping she would never be happy or be wedded.. But unbeknownst to her they both have a connection that can't be denied and fate will step in and take control..

Lord Whiddon, Gabriel, has no desire to ever be married. The entire ton knows this. So imagine the ton's surprise when all of a sudden he comes to the rescue of Miss Charlotte Mayne. From the first moment Gabriel and Charlotte are together, there is something that just draws her to him. The best part is that they can both be themselves together. When one encounter leads to kiss that is witnessed by everyone, Gabriel is forced to offer for Charlotte's hand. Gabriel is determined to have a marriage in name only, while Charlotte is equally determined to have a real marriage.

After marriage, these two fight their feelings for one another until they both give in. Of course things from both of their pasts come into play that ends up leading to danger. They are both going to have to really trust the other in order to find their happy ending. When things go downhill quickly that trust is going to be put to the test but thankfully Charlotte and Gabriel do find their happy ending.

I really enjoyed Why Do Earls Fall In Love by Deb Marlow. It is a super sexy story that has such fun characters. It was so fun watching the marriage adverse Gabriel fall hard. He was such a strong, stubborn but extremely faithful man. I also enjoyed Charlotte. She had such determination in everything she did. Gabriel was lucky to have her! Overall this was another wonderful story from Ms. Marlow.

This author really surprised me. Her works and writing style are just so good. Love the prose.

So so loved the fmc, she's strong, persuasive and kind. I love the fact that she just didn't give up on the mmc and instead tried to break down all his giant walls, she accepted all of him. And well, this mmc is very much imperfect, has insecurities and a bit coward but understandable when you consider his backstory. Good thing was that the mmc really had a beautiful character growth and showed improvements throughout the story.

Chemistry was A-plus and the romance was written well. Loved all the mmc's friends (mmc's from the other books in this series) with their wives (also from the other books). The villain was also very much a villain and someone that's just so easy to hate cause' he is just so horrible and really hateful. However, I just wished he got more of a comeuppance (well, he got one but for me it's just a little way too easy for him, he should've suffered more).

Great book. Compelling storytelling and interesting characters. Truly enjoyed this one. Looking out for more from this author.

The final book of A Series of Unconditional Courtships is full of twists and turns. Gabriel is a harsh man with a chip on his shoulder, and with his past, which is revealed little by little, it is understandable. Charlotte also has a difficult past which is following her to London and her debut. After they are compromised together, a compromise caused by her evil cousin, they marry. That's when everything gets even more complicated, what with smugglers, emigres, a little sister incognito, a rundown mansion, and staff that contributes to the problems. And Charlotte pulls it all together, even without the help of her husband. Really loved her.

It was nice to see the four friends together (Kes is missing, but eventually it is explained).

Lost one star for steaminess, of which there is quite a bit.

A thrilling read!

This book was very good. I loved that Charlotte was an artist. This made me very pleased. I was even quite surprised when she took the realms and fixed her husband's house. The periods in the book where she was sketching intrigued me a lot.

I was very pleased that Whiddon finally allowed Charlotte into his heart and unravel the misfortunes and pain that he went through and began to love her the way she has hoped for. Even the Hurley was a huge surprise to me. I didn't like his presence in Whiddon's house at all. I was very pleased on how he finally got caught by Gabriel and his friends.

The story was very gripping and I found myself going back to favourite scenes. I will be reading this book again in the new year.

Charming romantic intrigue

Deb Marlowe has done it again. A tortured man who meets the woman who can save him. A fast paced story of a man who needs to right his father's wrongs and does not believe in nor has room for love. Charlotte simply needs a husband who will care for her siblings and her. Fate deems them a match and enjoys the twists and turns of getting them together and keeping them there

Normally, I would give a Deb Marlowe book a 5 Star Review, and, although I adore a feisty heroine, the "crux of the matter" in keeping Charlotte and Gabriel apart was slow in revealing itself, almost to the point of no longer mattering. Also, Harriet as a spoiled brat worked for me, but as a villain, not so much.

This might be my favorite of this series but don't quote me! Gabriel is so very marriage adverse and once we understand why, it's so painful. Charlotte, who is is kind, sweeet, strong and who has her eyes and heart set on Gabriel, has her work cut out for her. Wow, loved the push/pull of their relationship and how Charlotte showed him love is for him.

𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will his fears tear them apart when his secrets have failed…

While I missed the previous book, I have read all the others in this series. Each one of this group of friends has its past hurt, pain which led them to their present dealings.
Whiddon is the last one remaining unmarried, and he is much determined for it to stay that way.
He might be driven to rescue people, he has a mission and nothing nor no one will make him stray away from his course.
So, he believed.
Still when he spots a debutante in a situation which might lead to a failed season, he steps in, even more as he witnessed she had been set-up.
Plus she intrigues him, she is more than meet the eyes, kind, clever and witty.
Charlotte is in London to find a way out of her family predicament. She has to marry, if possible a man who will take care of her siblings. She is not looking after a title or great wealth, just someone fair enough to take them all. But first she has to deal with her mean jealous cousin who is determined to ruin all her chances.

So while it began as a rescue moving to a marriage of convenience, soon it turns to more with danger, betrayal and challenge. But first they will have to trust one another and for Whiddon to share his secrets, all his secrets, and fears.

I much enjoyed watching Charlotte take matter in hand and find her footing. She might have known hardship and hunger, she is no meek nor demure girl, she quietly rearranges their life and is not afraid to ask for more when she sees the timing is right.
And seing again the friends banding together was much entertaining, as the women stepping in to welcome Charlotte in their folds.

“Beautiful. It was the right word. The sort of word you used to describe an ideal. The most stunning landscape. The most elegant settee. A breath-catching portrait. A perfectly proportioned stallion.
He put all of them to shame”

“But that is why you are likely the only person I can discuss it with. For I must marry, and you will not.”

“It was a worry that she could tie to all of the newly enthusiastic gentlemen about her, but if she was going to be honest with herself, she had to admit that the greatest flaw in each of them was that they were not Lord Whiddon.”

“He didn’t mean for it to happen. One moment he was letting her go and the next he’d pulled her in against his chest and pressed his mouth to hers”

“Something in the region of his chest, long asleep, suddenly sat up and took notice. Her?”

“And suddenly, the topiaries along the pier and near the boats lit up. Their dark refuge disappeared. They were caught, frozen, and bathed in light.”

“Why do you think they call him Lord Unwilling? Lord Whiddon does not believe in marriage. He will not be riding in to rescue us. He will not offer for my hand”

“We could marry, but it would be in name only.”

“She was going to be wise. He didn’t want to hear it. Instead, he pulled her closer still. “You should come with a warning sign,” he rasped. He took her mouth with his”

“When Whiddon looked at her, he saw her like no one else.”

“She loved all of that about him. How could she not? But she wanted more. She wanted to share their lives. She longed for the chance to love all of him, in the way it seemed no one else ever had”

“Also,” she said huskily. “I believe you agreed that we would address the matter of . . . heirs.”
Hell and damnation.
“I want to renegotiate our agreement,” she declared.”

“You need to understand. I’m negotiating for—” She paused and ran a searching gaze over him.
“For what?”
“For everything,” she blurted. “I want it all. I want to sleep with you and wake up with you. Stay with you. I want to help with your search for Hurley and the jewels. I’ve already made some sketches of him you can use,” she said hurriedly. “I want to know your sister and I want you to know my siblings, too.” Reaching up, she placed a hand on his jaw. “I want to laugh and cry with you. Fight and make up. I want it all. A real family.”

“She was right. He had to try.
Nodding, he swept her into his embrace again.”

“Yes. There. Her. She tasted like coming home. Like safety and comfort tangled with the thrill of a furious gallop”

“She was the reason his burdens felt lighter, why he faced the day with optimism instead of dread. Whatever happened, she would stand at his shoulder. They would face it together”

“I never knew what real love was, Charlotte, until you showed me.”

“You showed me how to love and be loved. And now I cannot live without it. Without you.”
“Neither can I. Without you, I mean.”

“Chester nodded toward her husband. “We had been worried about him for a while, you know. He’d been growing more remote and his heroics felt more reckless. But then he stepped in to rescue you and you saved him right back.” His expression softened. “You’ve made him happy, Charlotte, and that is a miracle I didn’t know if I would ever see.”

Intriguing Story . . .

Miss Charlotte Mayne got just enough funds together for one Season to find a husband willing to marry her and take in her siblings. Her nasty cousin Harriett tries to sabotage her efforts at every turn. At a ball, Charlotte encounters Gabriel Harris, Earl of Whiddon, who is out on the terrace to escape the crowd. Although he makes it obvious he is not interested in marriage, they still enjoy being in each other’s company. He watches her more closely and sees her cousin setting her up. Then he asks her to dance.

When he rescues her as she falls into the river, he looks into her eyes and without thought he kissed her. In that moment, her cruel cousin stepped out and pretended shock while her eyes shown triumphantly. Willing to do what is right, he proposes a marriage in name only. She wants more but will bide her time. The two were meant for each other. She straightens up his home, earns his trust, and becomes a true partner in the marriage. As their love grows, the former steward Hurley plots with Charlotte’s cousin Harriett, taking Charlotte captive and pulling out missing jewelry sewn into the furniture. What are they planning? Why have they taken Charlotte? Are they luring Gabriel to follow so they can kill him?

This was an exciting story line. Love and mystery will pull the reader in. The characters are well-portrayed and Charlotte is a strong and caring woman who has proven herself time and again. Grab your copy and see how this plot plays out.

Why Do Earls Fall In Love, the final installment in A Series of Unconventional Courtships by Deb Marlowe is a must read in my opinion. Gabriel is instinctively protective while Charlotte is honest and kind. He is allergic to marriage and she needs to marry. Throw in a deviously evil cousin and anything can happen. Yes I said “deviously evil", because let me tell you, if I were alone with that girl she would not be walking around in that book!

I loved the interplay between the H/h and the believable way in which their regard for each other grows. This story intrigues from the beginning and comes to you complete with all the feels. Ms. Marlowe has crafted a tale of mystery, chaos, intensity and some surprising moments that keep the pages turning toward that highly coveted HEA.

I think Eli probably sums it up best when he says to Charlotte, “the day ain’t done with you yet”. I think there are days many of us can relate to that statement. Don’t miss this highly entertaining read.

I love a book with a smart, caring, feisty woman. Charlotte has come to town to find a husband so that she can help with supporting her younger siblings. Her season isn't going well thanks to a cruel, jealous cousin who manages to sabotage her at every turn.
Whiddon is a bit of a mystery. He is suffering from a bad childhood where he sees how marriage can go wrong. Additionally, he feels the need to atone for his father's criminal ways. his only saving grace is his circle of friends who have become family for him. He has vowed to never marry until he is accidentally kissing Charlotte and does the right thing.
Even though theirs is a marriage of convenience they get along well and Charlotte is the perfect partner to help Whiddon get over his issues and see that he is worthy of love.
Some dangerous events help add to the excitement of watching these two fall in love and find their Happily Ever After.

Wow, there is a lot going on in this story. An impoverished Charlotte is in London to find a husband. She has an unusual encounter with Gabriel at a ball they both attended. Later, when Charlotte’s vindictive cousin Harriett causes her to fall in front of the King, Gabriel steps in to mitigate the damage. At another event, Harriett orchestrates another incident which requires Gabriel to marry Charlotte in order to save her reputation. Meanwhile, Gabriel is in the process of attoning for his father’s criminal activity. In this book you will find smuggling, stolen jewelry, murder, deception, jealousy, vindictiveness and kidnapping. You will also embark on a journey with Gabriel and Charlotte as they struggle to find love, loyalty and trust. This is a really interesting story that immediately draws you in and keeps you on your toes.

Gabriel is a rescuer. When her spiteful cousin plans a trick to embarrass Charlotte, it results in her marriage to Gabriel. He rescues her. He insists theirs will be a marriage of convenience. Charlotte doesn’t really understand why and quietly goes about changing that edict. If her plan works, maybe she can rescue him. This is a beautifully written emotional story with secrets, mystery, betrayal, deceit, and danger. Their enemies are nasty and persistent. Gabriel’s friends and their wives from previous stories are here to help him solve the mystery and welcome Charlotte. Gabriel and Charlotte need each other and are falling in love, but before they can find their HEA, they (especially Gabriel) must learn to trust each other. It can happen. I enjoyed and recommend this exciting story.

Awesome story.
Just one dance and Charlotte was meeting gentlemen with the hope of finding a husband. It was due to the kindness of Lord Whiddon. Gabriel really did not see himself as other do but he has met his match in Charlotte. Not that their relationship did not have some ups and downs and twists too but it all made for a highly entertaining read. The cast of characters were great and I loved how the author wrote her tale. Once I started I just had to finish and maybe even a bit sad when it ended. This is a book I hope you check out it is so good. Lord Whiddon is determined not to marry and Miss Mayne is determined not to trap anyone in a marriage of convenience.

This book is a part of the series called A series of unconventional courtships and involves characters from the previous books and make for a delightful family of characters.

I loved the storyline and plot of this book - Ms. Marlowe included elements of history strongly within this book and is marvelous to read.

The sexual tension between Charlotte and Gabriel is smoldering and builds very well.

Romance Level: 3.9/5

Exciting, romantic, reads easily and quickly. A story about a young debutante who is married to the eternal bachelor. Gabriel didn't want to get married, no confidence in the constitutional marriage, but circumstances forced him to marry Charlotte. The real challenge then begins. Making a marriage work through all the secrets, mistrust, traitors. The book has several storylines, sometimes I find it a bit messy, but an original and a fun, entertaining story. Made me curieus about the other books in this series
