An empire at war. A planet under siege. And a cheeky blaster rifle who wants to rid the galaxy of flounders.
Following their successful escape from Androchida Prime’s capital city, Sir Chuck and the rest of the Phantoms find themselves mystified by unsettling news. The leader of the Blood Guard resistance, framed General Cordan, has defected to the AE. But while many doubt the veracity of the development, more pressing intel awaits: the empire is planning to invade the Sci-Rung home world.
Despite the tragic loss of his best friend, Wic is determined now more than ever to capitalize on the empire’s move against the Sci-Rung. Not only does the massive military campaign present several opportunities to infiltrate the enemy’s highest echelons but it also allows the team to recon claims about General Cordan’s strange disappearance.
However, when Wic and his surviving Phantoms embark on their mission, they uncover startling new intel that places entire civilizations at risk. Outnumbered and overpowered, the heroes soon find themselves pitted against impossible odds.
Will Wic, Chuck, and the Phantoms be able to thwart the enemy? Or will the Androchidan Empire succeed in breaking their spirits once and for all, forever crushing the last of humanity’s pitiful rebellion?

If this was a movie you'd pay for the entire seat and just use the edge...
I truly loved this series. It's one of those rare series where it's really hard to put it down to sleep at night. You just want to keep reading paragraph after paragraph and book after book until you're finished. Being retired was a great boon! I read it cover to cover book after book until I was finished and I can honestly say it was the first thing I picked up in the morning and the last thing I put down at night. Yes it's really that good!
A fantastic ending for an awesome series. I am going to miss Phantom Team. There were some major gut punches at the end and it had ALL the feels. So so GOOD!
Kareseh has a meeting with the Queen. Can the Phantoms take advantage of this to take the Queen out once and for all? Can Kareseh be trusted? When her own sister has doubts you know there are concerns. Can they also rescue their father, the figurehead of the Blood Guard who supposedly betrayed them all (so why is he in prison?). Much action and warfare, loss and settling down (or not) may occur in this final story. An enjoyable conclusion.
This has been a great series. Action, suspense, drama, emotions, and heart felt connection to characters and ideals. This last book in the series is a true winner! The storyline, plot, characters and realism has been top notch throughout the series, yet I’m blown away by the final ending to the story, which was superbly done! Kudos to these two very talented authors!
Caveat: I'm writing this ~4mo after having read the book, and my memory isn't the best. I blew through this series so quickly that it all blended together and I don't really have any memorable details, so this is the same review for each book.
Except this part: I was bummed R.C. Bray stopped narrating the audiobooks as of book 5. His narration was hugely entertaining, and while I didn't dislike the new narrator, it was just such an abrupt shift, and not the same fun tone to me.
Someone I know was excitedly explaining the plot of a series that had this military dude fighting off an alien invasion with a snarky AI who was just hilarious. My response was oh yeah I love that one, Expeditionary Force, right? Nope… Ruins of the Earth. So we each decided to try the other series out.
For me, personally, this is We Have Expeditionary Force At Home. This is Expeditionary Force for those who thought Skippy was too weird, and wanted more guns and boots on the ground. For those who never got to meet Col. Smythe, or those who did and wanted the Marines instead of the SAS. For those who thought ships named "It Was Like That When We Got Here" or "How'd That Work Out For You" were just a bit much.
So, clearly I prefer Expeditionary Force. But. I ran out of it. This fits the same niche of something I can turn my brain off for, and it was entertaining enough and fine for that. It's not great, it's not mind-blowing, but I read the whole series, I got a few chuckles of out it, and I didn't hate it.
…probably just going to re-read ExFor next time though.
I am so sorry this book is over. I may just have to turn around and read it again.
Talk about a fantastic ending. I was on a plane during the Big Battle and had to look out the window with tears in my eyes. Thank goodness it was at night. The ending was so good! Wrapped up any and all loose ends with room for a spin-off series. Wow.
And whine all you like about the switch from RC Bray to Christoper Ryan Grant. Grant was amazing. I'd listen to either of them all day long. And I'll be looking for more that Grant has narrated, because man what a book hangover I've got.
Really enjoyed all 6 book's and wish there were more! Unlike many other book's , these had decent punctuation, and very few if any misspelled or wrong words in context to the sentence. Grew up with the Old Sci-fi Masters, and never saw bad writing until I started reading kindle ebooks! Thought I would have to start buying books again, but these book's gave me a new lease on reading kindle unlimited! Keep up the good work!
I got sucked into this universe due to due to the Pandemic. All this can say is that it’s been worth every second of be read or listened on Audible. This book and it’s adventures has you glued for the ride with the Phantoms. One even feels sorry for plushies, until you remember how terrible the Queen was and the atrocities committed in her name. Can’t wait to jump into the next adventure.
This was one of the best well-rounded space operas I've read in a long time. Character development, plot advancement, believability (well, for a space opera), just enough sadness, humor to make it real. Real, excellent splick that was fresh and exciting reading the whole way through! An absolute pleasure to read. Makes me want some flounder fingers.
A decent end to the series with a nice little call out at the end of the book. I might have missed but was there only the few gates in New York and area so when those were taken out Earth was safe? I felt like there were more around the world, but again I might have missed that. Otherwise this was pretty decent series, a little too action driven with minimal plot, so by the end OTF felt like a mindless mantra.
I've loved all 6 books of this series. I read book 1 a while back, then found there was books 2 - 6, so re-read book 1 then the other 5 books back to back. I know some people moaned about 'Sir Charles' after the first book but I've really enjoyed his character development- and his relationship with Wic. The writing style is right up my street, and I loved the pace of the story telling.
Feeling a little bereft now I've finished the series.
I'm so sad to see this series end, but wow what an ending! I've been amazed since book one when I find myself laughing while awful things are happening in the story, I see that as a true talent in writing. Looking forward to what else Christopher Hopper will bring us.
I'm going to keep this short, and sweet, as they say . A series filled with well developed characters, science fiction, humor, military type tactics and squad dynamics. And I hope the authors find another vehicle to continue what they did with the phantom team. Because it's worth it.
No spoilers here. Your favorite good guys do battle with your loathed bad forces. Lots of twists and turns in the story. Really hate to see it end. Maybe there will be a book 7 or a 1000 page epilogue. ;)
For those new, this is a great sci-fi earth human team vs the universe of bad guys. Enjoy. Also, kudos to the writing team. OTF
Much of the same as the previous 5 books and good as a result Humour is actually funny, helped by Sir Charles's usual conversation, action is non stop and the aliens, both good and bad, well thought out and engaging The final battle is a tad drawn out and the expected happens, hence only 4*, but apart from that a really fun book
With the cast of characters this story had it will be sad to see them go (maybe for the time being?). The way they all came together was extraordinary to say the least. The story was never lacking for ingenuity and excitement. A very plausible view to the future.
I’ve read a lot of books in the last 12 months but these 6, I’ve really enjoyed from start to finish. They’ve made me laugh several times with Sir Chuckles dry English humour. Can’t forget Yrag either and his Goood Sttuuuffs. I even got a little teary eyed at the end of book 6 with the loss of a team member. Highly recommended.
Another fun (and final?) romp through the galaxy with the fearless Phantoms. Saving the day for their enemy this time? Funny how things change. The series wrapped pretty well with this story, leaving a few loose threads though, for as Vlad would put it, “for futures sexing, no?” Lol. I enjoyed it.
Excellent completion to the series would be sad if it didn't continue.
This has been a fun read from day one. If the authors feel they're done with all they want to do with the storyline I will understand. But I would still be sad to say that it would be nice to see more and finished on a good note and it was a fun read that's for sure
It is always a little sad when a great series of books concludes. What a ride gents, thank you for the effort y'all went to for those of us who still enjoy a good book!! I look forward to what is next.
While I hate to see this series end, the whole ride was fantastic. Filled with love , laughter and excitement. The characters were filled with humanity (even the non human ones) who grew and evolved, I enjoyed it very much.
Awesome read. Great characters who stand together. A science fiction band of Brothers.
This book is action filled. It displays the characteristics of the men and women who are in our military. Brothers and sisters to the very end. The sacrifices made to honor their brothers.
Wow. I laughed, cried, and threw punches. Also said, " Chuck !" more than a few times. Please pick up and read this series. I know you will enjoy the ride with these well thought out and presented characters. Did not give away any of the story.
The series was a bit long and has its ups and downs but this one was a great ending. Pulled it all together and had great moments. I am pretty sure we have not seen the last of the Phantoms. Let the adventures continue with some great characters.
It's hard to say anything without giving away anything. Let's just say it wrapped up very well and now I want to read ruins of the galaxy again. Give it a whirl and fall in love
Fire and fury is a great story that will keep you tied to the the book until the very end. Will the Phantoms prevail? Will this be a step too far? Read now to see if it turns out the way you’ve envisioned!
This is a nice enjoyable and entertaining series. If you enjoy great characters and an interesting storyline then give it a try. It has lots of action and suspense as well as humorous characters.
Never had read military books, but this whole series, I just could not put the books down. Took me by surprise the ending, was not expecting. Best military series ever!
This is one of those stories that will have you turning pages so fast that you'll set your finger tips on fire. It's so refreshing to read military sci-fi from the perspective of someone who's been there and done that.
They went through so much together. And just when I thought things were going to be easy and their mission finished. The ending was a surprise love how he decides to take out The General so cool... Will it continue??
