About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

I received an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Place your preorders now because you do not want to miss what is happening in the City. You have action and romance and drama and comedy. It spans everything and is so well written! I have finished Red City and I did not believe I could be taken by surprise by another badass amazing storyline. I will be slowly dying in suspense as I await the next book. This one is just brilliant.
I can't remember the last time a book has left me feeling this heavy. When I finished it I was left stunned. Red City is an emotional journey rife with so much character growth. We have redemption, betrayal, misunderstandings, tragedy...and so much more. I don't want to post any spoilers but I would say this series needs to be read in order. There is just too much happening and so much history readers need to have prior knowledge of.
I've read all of the books (so far) in the Magelands world from the start and I even had forgotten something, so it caught me off guard.
To say there are unexpected happenings seems rather bland to explain how I was left feeling. Not to mention everything is left on a cliffhanger, a very dramatic one. If that sort of thing is more than you can handle you may want to wait for the next one and ready them together. At this point, I figure if you're reading this series you should already be used to it. I can think of many different series that utilize the same method to drive the plot forward while digging hooks into us poor book addicts.
If you have not fallen into the worlds of The Magelands yet I suggest starting at the beginning. This is not a series any fantasy lover should overlook. There is also a certain grit to this series. Christopher Mitchell does not shy away from the unpleasant side of war and the worst that having too much power can influence someone's actions. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
I received an advanced copy of this story through BookFunnel from the author and am leaving a voluntary honest review.
There is something really amazing that a series this long allows for. It's one of the reasons I've enjoyed reading so much indie work recently--publishers generally don't let you put out a 13+ book series these days, and so it's impossible to do the kind of slow build worldbuilding and history that Mitchell manages in this series. A certain figure from the city's history (I don't want to spoil it) has returned, and her arrival changes everything. Her entrance into the series feels like a huge twist that the full weight of can completely land, because we've had at this point thousands of pages to get used to a world that's been shaped by both her past actions and by her absence. Her reemergence reshapes everything we thought we knew about this world, and yet it makes perfect sense in continuing to build the sweeping plot towards the conflict that seems to be coming: the battle between gods and humans. My one critique, for what it is worth, is that there are so many different characters that I felt a little lost at times. The characters from the first trilogy are so memorable that to some extent the others feel like they get lost in the shuffle--they just don't feel as "real" to me. However, they do help bring this huge world to life, and make it feel realistic and lived-in. A great installment, and a brilliantly executed twist I didn't see coming.
And the story moves forward... we're back in the City where where some of our characters have grown to understand their better more compassionate yet stronger sides. The battle moves on with a new character, no less than the Ascendant Simon who moves to destroy the mortal crown, .. I'm waiting to see who comes to the rescue! And the story moves forward... we're back in the City where where some of our characters have grown to understand their better more compassionate yet stronger sides. Red City (Magelands Eternal Siege, #8), my ninth read from prolific author Christopher Mitchell. When I want to read epic fantasy I first look for author Christopher Mitchell. With 22 books written over 3 series, I need to get going & read more Christopher Mitchell books. I look forward to reading more from this author. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Exciting instalment in the series… Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2021 Another well written, character driven chapter in this series. It contains all the excitement a fantasy reader could want…. Plot twists, dragons, plenty of action, some very likeable characters and some rogues! It is very easy to become totally lost in the world that the author has created, offering pure escapism. Can’t wait for the final instalment!
Dragon's ,Godling's, Magic and Swordfighting..What more can a Fantasy reader want ? Twists & turns backstabbing and Holdfasts . I am an Honest ARC reviewer and this #8 book in the series is just as good as the rest,Which is awesome ,usually the further into a series you go the less epic, and intense they are.Not these. Read 'em all you'll see.Awaiting MORE !!!
Another great installment in the series! The evil God Queen wants her throne back. How far will she go to get it? She and her family are desperate to gain back control of the city so they can live in the lap of luxury while the mortals do all the work. Kelsey and her dragon are enlisted in the fight against the Gods! Great read! I can’t wait for the next book!
What a rush. So much happens. Van and Kelsey, Frostback and Halfclaw, Danny and Emily, Amalia and Kagan, Lucius, Montieth, Naxor, Amber, Felice, Salvor, Quill, Jade, Rosie, Simon. All of these characters play a significant role and create almost unbearable tension. Few situations have happy resolutions. I can hardly wait for the next book.
Every book in this series is better than the last one!!!! I cannot wait to read the next one!!!! Red City pulls you in until you are actually in the excitement and living through everything that the characters are going through!!!
Every book in this series completely captures my attention to the very end leaving me wanting to immediately start the next. I have so much anxiety about the ending and plan to start the next book as soon as I wake up in the morning. Thank you for reviving my love of reading C.M.!
It was not too bad in the end, but the twists and turns in plot and decisions of how things played out were hard to follow at times. I did like it and felt it would make a good recommendation for some younger family members.
Very action pack.but very depressing.I am also getting a bit fed up with the push and pull with van and Kelsey.with all the war there needs to be some fun banter.
