Wycliffe Family #3

A Lady on the Chase

Rate this book
Her father promised her to one man.
She promised her heart to a second.
Until she meets the third.

Lady Alicia Kendall has it all: wealth, beauty, suitors--and a history of creating scandals. The only thing she doesn't have is her best friend and man of her dreams, Henry Crawley. When Henry announces his plans to join the Regulars, her father's adamant disapproval of him deepens and prompts a deal to be struck:

She has two weeks to secure Henry's proposal, or she must give him up forever and marry a man of her father's choosing.

Alicia agrees. But when one of her attempts goes awry, she gets a begrudging proposal from someone else entirely--Matthew Wycliffe. The most condescending man ever to walk the face of the earth, and her newly-discovered nemesis.

If only to avoid yet another scandal, Alicia accepts Mr. Wycliffe's offer. After all, with the deal she struck with her father, she'll never marry the man anyway. But as they endure dark castles, hot-tempered soldiers, and hidden secrets brought to light all in their quest for a proposal from Henry, Alicia notices something different about the insufferable, grumbling Matthew Wycliffe. And she wonders if perhaps the proposal she wants is the one she's already received.

Jessica Scarlett writes amazing books and lame author bios. She hates the pressure of encapsulating everything about herself in a hundred words or less, because she’s too divergent, dynamic, and different for that. And simultaneously not that interesting.

She is the author of the Wycliffe Family Series, Slanted London series, and a couple plays. When not writing, she loves composing music, laughing with her four kids, or doing life on a ranch in Utah with her cinnamon-roll husband.

I loved this book. I mean, LOVED it. I'd read a few chapters yesterday morning—enough to know I was going to be fully charmed—got home later in the day, picked it right back up, and didn't stop reading until I finished it at 10 p.m. It's been forever since I've let myself read for that many hours in a row...but I literally just could not stop. The dialogue was pitch-perfect, the romance, the emotion—all of it is pitch-perfect. I laughed out loud more than once, and the hero, Matthew, has shot right up there with some of my very favorite heroes ever. Gosh, I just absolutely loved it!

By all England, she made me love a love triangle story. Ok, technically, a wobbly love square. It seems, if a hero has me gripped with such a glorious characterization, I can withstand this torturous trope. Matthew had me locked down from the beginning.

For the love of all that is good, please read this series in order. Fabulous couples and magnificient banter, tension and angst, plus so much better to have met Matthew before this (and to fully appreciate that mystery book reveal). Since I first glimpsed him in all his precociousness in book 1 and was like “Who is this kid?” to becoming such an MVP for book 2, to now see him subject to this author’s masterful lovelorn hero dismantling, oh, I love him so.

If ever there was a hero that needed to meet his match. It’s like blonde Scarlett O’Hara toppled Sherlock Holmes into a forced fake engagement. But make her a duke’s impetuous daughter with more sense and vulnerability and make him a self-made, financial savant/second son and give him a loving family to soften him up. The way this book was written for all of us HEA chasers that ever complained about the antagonism fading too soon. Because here the line between love and hate is as thin as Lady Prima’s self-control with a picnic lunch, and I live for that push and pull. He is all stoic, told-you-so logic, she is all resiliently-endearing, impassioned chaos mess, and, when she learns what happens when you get between Mr. Wycliffe and his current book, the game is afoot (sorry, had to).

“Fear. Attraction. Anticipation.” We find the series thread of a wonderfully frustrating first person single POV catching glimpses of a hero’s absolute terror at impending emotional devastation. He’s full into his Prof. Higgins strains of “Let a Woman in Your Life” era, and I was like YES, CRACK HIM OPEN, my lady. We also have the series theme of literal and figurative hidden identities, as the convention-flaunting ballroom favorite and the reclusive, bookish misanthrope find they share in common Fort Knox lonely souls with stubborn competitive streaks and penchants for wielding psychoanalitical evisceration well.

This whole series has been “Chaperones, who?” and there were some small story aspects that left me wondering if I missed something, but who cares? Not me. Such brilliant scenes of antics and deadpan humor. From that SNL’s Garth and Kat style “How we met” fake storytime to chess games, hidden passageways, rocky shores, tavern confrontations and fencing tournaments, it was such a good time as she ruffles his feathers so well. Just to add another obscure reference: you know that love-sick squirrel that’s all over squirrel Merlin in The Sword in the Stone? That’s these two as Lady Kendall puts her best foot forward for this fortnight-ultimatum farce. So fun. And, of course, it’s all fun and vengeful games, til the feels are caught.

As the previous books evidenced and foreshadowed, our darling, oft-exasperated Matthew has a champion’s heart whose love language is begrudging helpfulness and self-sacrifing gestures. But of course he’s been such a tough nut to crack, I, much like Alicia, took great pleasure in seeing some agony dangling and his comeuppance delivered. “When this is all over, I want my sanity back” Oh, you silly rabbitt, Mr. Wycliffe. Epilogue perfection, as you know these two will be sparring and bickering into the ever after and wouldn’t have it any other way.

This series is a new favorite, and that’s a short list. I wonder what Ms. Scarlett will make me read next, because I’m reading it.

Content notes: kissing only, on page toxic family behavior, mention of parent-loss grief, a brief scene of peril and unwanted advances.

"I wish to prepare you. Mr. Wycliffe is not some shy fellow incapable of forming a sentence. Don't let his books deceive you -- he is tediously clever and quite simply the horridest man to ever walk the earth."

And now I must prepare you dear reader. Clear your schedules because the binge is REAL with this one. Oh how I love a Jessica Scarlett book, and after reading this recent edition to the Wycliffe family series, and I want to go back and re read them all.

I am always sucker for good BANTER. And now I am a sucker for Matthew. In all honesty I had a ridiculous smile plastered on my face for a grand majority of this book.

What do you get when you cross an anti-social recluse with a lady who can't help but get wrapped up in Scandal? A really good time. What I loved about this book is the push and pull of chemistry between these two characters. Its the type that will make you scream..."just kiss already" but you know you'll have to settle in for the long haul. It's a real enemies to lovers with sweet and tender moments laced in between cleverly aimed barbs.

I don't want to spoil a thing for you but just know, its good. And as frustrated as I was with these characters and their choices, it was these characteristics that made the story was it was.

I read this in a single day, lost a lot of sleep but 100% don't regret it. Please read these in order for the greatest enjoyment as characters appearing in the first books all appear in the sequential ones after.

I don’t know if I can do this review.

Nothing I say can do this book justice! It just can’t.

I’m quite literally IN LOVE with this book! OBSESSED!
We are talking “You know I am madly in love with you” 5 stars! 😉
I finished it at 5:30 in the morning and had to get up for work a few hours later. No regrets. And I quite literally fell asleep with a goofy grin on my face 😂😃

So, Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson is probably my favorite book of all time and I never thought another book could quite reach its level…

But you guys, dare I say, this did! 😍
And that’s about as high a compliment that I can even come up with!

Matthew has been my favorite character through this series and I was nervous to see him as the love interest. I love him. But, I couldn’t quite imagine him falling in love. (Neither did he, it turns out.) My worries were completely unfounded and he is one of the best and most SWOONY book boyfriends I’ve read in a while! And he was also completely true to who we have seen Matthew be. He was snarky. A know it all. Aloof. Incredibly intelligent. Secretly sweet.
He’s just perfection. 👌🏻😍

Alicia was a spitfire of a heroine! I didn’t know how I felt about her in the beginning but she just grows on you without you even realizing it and you just want to see her happy!
Her and Matthew were a great match for each other!

The romance. The banter. The tension.

*cue “Fear. Attraction. Anticipation.”*

One of the best “enemies to lovers” I have EVER read! Seriously. EVEEEERRR!

I was also so so so so happy to see the other couples in this book again and see them all interact together! It made my heart swell with complete happiness! 😊

Now if I still haven’t convinced you…
here’s some extra things I LOVED:

The meet hate…
Running her fingers through his hair! *I GASPED*
Secret passageways… 🤫
The Chess scene pt. 1 ♟
13 👶🏻
THE TAVERN SCENE 🍺
The most tension filled and romantic cheek kiss that’s ever been written. (Yes, I said cheek kiss.) 😏
The Alley
His smile… 🥺
Lady Prima 😂
The Brighton Games 🤺
THE BEACH SCENE 🌊
Matthew’s book 📕
BALLROOM SCENE 😘
Chess scene pt. 2 ♟

GAHHHHHHHH!!! 😍😍😭
Please read this book!
You need this in your life!
Trust me.

This book gets ALL THE STARS.

I’ve never liked love triangles, but I hate love rectangles after this book. Alicia was cruel to Lord Hawthorne and Matthew, and led poor Henry on. The story would have been much better had Henry’s character not existed and Lord Hawthorne had some defect other than being annoying. Alicia deserved to end up alone.

Even if you’re not usually a fan of grumpy heroes, you’re going to adore Matthew…especially if you’ve read the 2 previous book and have gotten to know him a bit already. He’s a bit of an unapologitical know-it-all but somehow also super endearing. When two strong-willed, thinks-they-are-smarter-than-everyone-else people butt heads, sparks fly. And it makes for entertaining reading!

ALL THE DANG STARS

OH MY GOSH I LOVED THIS BOOK SO DANG MUCH.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

The tension, THE ANGST, the banter, swooning all over the place. This is proof yet again, that just because a book is “only kissing” doesn’t mean it can’t bring the heat in other romantic ways.

I absolutely adored Alicia and Matthew. Total opposites attract. A bit of grump and sunshine, and oh yeah, FAKE ENGAGEMENT. A trope combination of my dreams. I was laughing, smiling, and tearing up. I found myself feeling allllll the emotions. Every time these two tried flirting with each other had me in stitches. I love that this had some modern-esque tidbits because it became the perfect refresh in this genre.

I really liked how intricate the plot ended up being. It’s all very fast paced, and it works. Everything is given it’s due and the scenes necessary to further the plot happen. I do think Lord Hawthorne was the only one without a place but he did provide some comedic moments.

The build here was incredible. I was utterly wrapped up in this story and take full responsibility for the lack of sleep it caused. WORTH IT. I am still flailing around to anyone who’ll listen that you should read this book.

YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.

Overall audience notes:
- Regency romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of Mother (by childbirth with flashback moments)

I have anxiously been waiting for this book and of course I had to start it the day it came out! This author is 100% a winner for me.

I don’t even know how to describe this book with out taking some yummy tension out of it. It’s a little slow going in the beginning and I was almost worried. But once it took off the tension was amazing and I felt myself cheering this misunderstood couple on! I will say Matthew is not your normal leading man. It took some time for me to understand his thought process and to find it endearing. Both him and Alicia were so stubborn and their back and forths were epic! I was glued whenever these two were together. Such chemistry! But also so different then other books I’ve read. It truly was the underlining tension. The author wrote it perfectly. I didn’t even understand how well, until I finished the book and all was revealed.

Make sure you have some time when you start this one. Loved it!

Oh my stars!!
I loved EVERYTHING about this novel, EVERYTHING!!!
I was hooked from the beginning and stayed up late until I hit the end. There are so many good things to say about the novel but I don't want to leave ANY spoilers. Suffice it to say you need this book in your TBR pile. It can stand on its own even though it's part of a series. And Matthew Wycliffe is the absolute best. And I want Lady Alicia as a friend.

5 stars! What a beautiful, fun, low-steam historical romance. Alicia is a daughter of a duke who is trying to win her childhood sweetheart’s hand in marriage before he ships off to serve in the military. She enlists the HIGHLY reluctant help of Matthew Wycliffe, a stoic and condescending man who could not care two wits about the heroine’s demands, but is strongarmed to join her in a fake betrothal scheme.

The scene where they’re both trying to embarrass each other when telling the (fake) story of their first meeting made me laugh out loud.

And when Matthew stood up for her to others, the BUTTERFLIES I HAD, wow.
“I am confessing to the fact that I always look after what is mine. As we are engaged, you are mine now, too.”
Just a casual proclamation from a man who is so untouchable. There were also a surprising number of emotional parts that had me tearing up.
Sometimes it felt as if I’d been given a finite amount of love, at birth. It was mine to give away, but once it was gone, it was gone forever. There was no way to create more.
I highly recommend to historical romance lovers who want to swoon at a sweet romance.

GAH! This author! I love the way she sets up a story. It's like a puzzle that unfolds, she tells you nothing about characters till you are halfway through the book and then you finally start to understand why they do what they do! It is such an interesting way to do it. I love it, unfortunately this character made me want to scream and honestly I didn't like Alicia much. Maybe I saw too much of my younger self in her, I jerked several guys around because I had no idea what I wanted. This is why I am giving it three stars. I almost put this book down and yelled at her at the near end! Dang! But that is a good thing! I should probably give this 4 stars just for the writing and invoking so much emotion in me:} Alicia was just not my fav and really I could have hit Henry upside the head a couple times too.
Good tension and good writing will keep me going back for this author for every book:}

Loved it!

I received this as a gift for Christmas and it was so fun reading an actual physical book again! I need to do it more often. I had read the previous books, but it had been awhile and was happy to find that this installment stood very well on its own.

Story I really don't want to say too much or give anything away. Alicia is being forced into an unwanted marriage, but is given a small window to secure a proposal from the man she truly loves. Things get messy when she is caught in an innocent, but compromising position with another man. A man she despises. Which leads us on a complicated and entertaining journey.

Characters While I liked Alicia, I wanted to shake her a few times! Despite being beautiful, wealthy and titled, she has had a very lonely and difficult life. Not shown a lot of love and no true friends, she has built a lot of walls around herself. She is full of life though, always getting up to something and is just a fun character. I remember Matthew from previous books, I remember wanting to see him get a HEA. But, I sure wanted to shake him a few times as well. I loved that he is tough on the outside and all soft on the inside. I liked that they were not your typical characters, that they had a good balance of faults and likable qualities. The side characters were also developed well.

Romance A very well written enemies-to-lovers trope, where you truly feel the dislike of each other (sometimes I was a bit worried) to eventually and believably seeing those feelings change. Lots of good chemistry, tension and banter. I love a story where the leading lady swoops in and totally shakes up our heroes world! Alicia does find herself in quiet a predicament, father wanting her to marry one man, being in love with a childhood friend and yet engaged to a man she doesn't like. I liked how it was handled though, messy but necessary for Alicia to go through everything to end up where she does.

Overall, I really couldn't put this one down. It was well written, engaging, frustrating, clever, swoony, endearing, tender, hopeful and just an enjoyable story.

This book was so, so good! I loved it so much. This is officially one of my all time favorite enemies-to-lovers books, if not my favorite. And that’s because of two little words— Matthew Wycliffe.
It’s official— Matthew Wycliffe is my new favorite hero. He’s up there with the best of them. You know “I am madly in love” with him. *sighs*
In all seriousness, Matthew is one of the most well-written, complex heroes I’ve ever read. He feels so real to me that I really can’t believe he’s not. His character has so much depth. I’ve loved him since book one when he was just a kid. Not only does he have the softest heart ever, but he’s also stinkin’ hilarious and had me laughing the entire time… except for when I was crying. Not to mention he’s brilliant. It’s truly not fair that’s he’s not real! *sigh* He’s perfect.
As for Alicia, it took me a while to warm up to her. Her character growth was so, so well-written though. By the end of the book, I really liked her. I wanted to shake her a few times but in the end, I really did like her. Matthew met his match indeed! ❤️

The romance. I. Loved. It. So. Much. Everything about it. This is enemies-to-lovers at its absolute finest. Half the time I was laughing my head off at their banter, the other half I was fixing to cry. A book has not caused me to be so dramatic while reading it in a while. I was gasping, laughing, whisper yelling at the characters— all the feels. Basically two characters who can’t stand each other have to act like they love each other and I was here for it.

I love Jessica’s writing! She writes characters SO well. Honestly. Every character in this book has felt real to me, even side characters like Lady Prima.
There was so much depth to the story and I loved it.

So basically I loved this book to pieces. I literally read it one evening and stayed up extra late to finish it because I just could not put it down. The characters felt so unbelievably real and the romance was so beautiful. It pretty much emotionally wrecked me. I could probably write a book about my feelings on Matthew Wycliffe and this book but I’m not going to bore everyone to tears. Suffice it to say, I LOVED this book. It was everything I hoped for and more. Goodness, I love the Wycliffe family! I need more books about them!

2023 reread-
I LOVE this book. And I do believe I loved it even more reading it for the second time if that’s even possible. Ahh! Matthew is just such a wonderful, three-dimensional character. And so is Alicia. Their story is just SO good.
Once again, this book made me feel all the feels. I laughed and smiled numerous times. And I actually teared up too. It’s just a good book.💗 (also, I may not get over my disappointment that Matthew Wycliffe is not real.)

Ok, so, the first book in this series was a book club pick last year. I quickly devoured the second book & I absolutely adored Matthew Wycliffe from the first moment we saw him, but my schedule got crazy & I had to wait to get to his book. I should have just sacrificed sleep or something, because I cannot believe I actually held off on this amazing story! The wit, the fun, the tension, so many little nuances of character & plot—it was everything I hoped it would be & more.

Things I Loved:
-Demand away
-“‘You mean to say that in the space of three hours you met a man, toppled into him, and walked away engaged?’ ‘Of course not, don’t be silly. It was not our first meeting.’ I took a sip of wine. Against the glass I mumbled, ‘And it only took one hour.’”
-Matthew’s library
-“Did you predict that?”
-“‘And now we must pretend to be in love, even though I’d rather gnaw off my arm with my own teeth.’ ‘An opinion we share.’ He glanced at me from the corner of his eye. ‘And do hurry, my lady—for then I shall be spared the trouble of escorting you. No arm, no way to lead you into dining rooms.’”
-Matthew putting Graham in his place
-Anarchic interposer
-The Wycliffe family as a whole ♥️
-The book
-The tavern
-“No, I didn’t hate him. In fact, I hated him so little I was in danger of falling hopelessly in love.”
-Story telling to Charlotte
-Lady Prima 😂
-Name one.
-THE kiss
-“Being broken isn’t such a bad thing, if you have someone to be broken with.”
-Unpredictable.

The whole ending just got me. All throughout this book I laughed out loud, I cried, & I swooned a lot. I am Team Matthew Wycliffe for life. It was such a perfect end to a fantastic series. ♥️

Great hero, unlikable heroine. Maybe it was meant to come across as funny, but the way she used and manipulated people to get what she wanted turned me off big time. She needed to grow up big time before being ready for marriage or any of the guys pursuing her, unfortunately we don't see this happen. That being said I loved grumpy, book-loving Matthew so much and the author has such an engaging style that I zoomed my way through the story despite my dislike of Alicia.

Trigger Warning: death of a parent recounted

Lady Alicia Kendall is adored by men for her wealth and beauty and is notorious for causing scandals. But regardless of all that, she only has eyes for the one man who doesn't feel deserving of her- Henry Crawley. When Alicia comes up with a plan to help Henry have the means to propose, things become even more complicated when she finds herself suddenly engaged to the stubborn and reclusive Matthew Wycliffe. And soon she'll have to face the fact that Matthew is beginning to win her over with his sharp mind and challenging ways. Will she end up giving her heart to the man she's always loved or the one who tests her at every turn?

I clearly have some unpopular thoughts on this one. The charming and fiercely loyal young Matthew from books 1 & 2 has been reduced to an arrogant jerk here. This author used 3 tropes that I love but tend to be very picky about: grumpy/sunshine, enemies to lovers, and love triangle. Unfortunately, none of them worked for me. First, Matthew, as stated above, just came off as rude rather than grumpy. There was one promising scene in the castle tunnels, but then that sweetness never returned. Second, the bickering between these two never felt passionate, just childish and mean-spirited. I was left wondering when I'd be convinced that they secretly adored one another. Finally, the love triangle ended up making things complicated and just made Alicia look flaky and mean. She continues to declare feelings for Henry until the eleventh hour when she finally realizes she loves Matthew. I'm sorry, but no. I'm glad others loved this, but I still think book 2 was the best and definitely showed Matthew in a better light.

This was my first book by Jessica Scarlett and with all of the lovely reviews, I had to jump in! (Swipe for synopsis)

Lady Alicia's reputation defines scandalous. She is reckless, opinionated and has her own mind. But she is also a sweetie who wants to feel loved. Enter Matthew- also opinionated, has his own mind, and doesn't care what people think. Though a mere gentleman and 2nd son, he is welcomed in higher society due to his wealth, but prefers to hide behind his books.

These two together have a combustible relationship. And boy do they get at each other. No fear in telling each other how they really feel...and I love it! Banter, banter and more banter! I got to say I love a man protective of his books and library.

My only issue is the history. Though lady Alicia, daughter of a Duke, is left with free rein, I feel there were multiple scenes that didn't match up with the time and society expectations. More needs for chaperones...and one scene where she was found alone with another man? No scandal? Not to be mean but, I needed to see society look down on her more. For this regency time, her actions would be appalling by society standards. I expected more push back from the ton. So I would read this more as a romance by itself rather than historical romance....

Otherwise, super fun read, great romance, perfect brooding hero. I'm always excited about a grumpy gus.

I really enjoyed this story, there were a lot of layers to it that slowly unfolded and kept me eagerly reading. I loved the banter between Matthew and Lady Alicia. Alicia gets into a lot of scrapes causing quite a few scandals. As the daughter of a Duke, she is constantly under scrutiny. One such scrape results in her engagement to Matthew even though she plans to marry her childhood friend Henry. She quickly decides that Matthew hates her, but enlists his help to secure Henry instead. Our hero Matthew is highly intelligent and keeps his emotions closed off nearly all the time. Lady Alicia brings some of them out. It was a fun story and one that I’m sure I’ll reread soon. Actually, it makes me want to reread the whole series again.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 stars.

I freakin love Jessica Scarlett‘s Wycliffe series. This one, in particular, was so enjoyable to read I wanted to read it again the moment I finished it. Scarlett understands people really well, which comes through in the depth of her characters and their choices. I love the humor and that the author pulls off such witty dialogue between characters without being corn ball, which I find can be difficult for a lot of the proper romance genre authors to pull off. She nailed it, yet again, in A Lady on the Chase. Read the whole series, you won’t be sorry. You’re welcome.

“And as for throwing yourself at me,” he glanced back up, “believe me, my lady, when I say I would not wish you to. I have found catching collapsing women to be a most tiring business.”

Oh Matthew, you must read this book for Matthew Wycliffe.

‘A Lady on the Chase’ by Jessica Scarlett has left me speechless! This book has depth. This story blew me away. These characters have found a permanent place in my heart.

Matthew can predict just about anything, but his story was the most unpredictable and it took me on quite the adventure! Hold onto your heart while reading this book because it is going to go on the most wild ride!

There is an intense fiery loathing between Lady Alicia Kendall and Matthew Wycliffe and sparks fly. I thought at times they might catch the book on fire with their fiery banter and battle of wills. With that came tension and chemistry. What they would do with that chemistry I did not know, and I had to keep turning the pages to find out!

Matthew is a brilliant brooding bookworm. He is intelligent, arrogant and did I mention he is also devastatingly handsome! Lady Alicia is stubborn, fiery and a force to be reckoned with. She does not conform to societies expectations. In other words, she is trouble and her and Matthew get into quite a charade together! My heart melted as they slowly got to know and understand each other. This is a story of self discovery, growth, loving and healing!

♟️Memorable moments included fencing, secret passageways, a smile, chess, a ball, 13 children and amazing kisses!
♟️I have fallen in love with the Wycliffe family and I LOVED revisiting them all in this story!!!
♟️I loved the amazing settings. There literally is never a dull moment in this book!

You do not want to miss Matthew and Alicia’s story. They are incredible characters with an incredible story! It truly is one for the ages!

AGHHHHHHH. To start off, may I just say that I have been waiting (quite impatiently I might add) for our dear Matthew's story since day one. It did not disappoint. My brain cannot function. This book was EVERYTHING.

I love Alicia and her witty comebacks. I love how she doesn't back down from a challenge. She is spunky, dramatic, and is just the kind of girl to put Matthew in his place. I also love how heartbreakingly honest she is with herself. She grows so much throughout the book and really discovers who she is and what drives her.

Matthew ....... Oh Matthew. You beautifully stupid human. There are times where I loved him. There are times when I wanted to slap him for his obliviousness. Some things made me want to literally throw this book across the room. But he also went through his own personal journey and discovered himself. I love how we get to see why Matthew is the way he is and we get to see the best parts of his character.

The plot was full of romance, mystery, drama, and friendship. I loved seeing characters from the precious book make appearances. If you haven't read the previous books, YOU NEED TO! No negotiations. Just do it. You will miss out on sooooo many little moments and history that make this book PERFECT.

The pacing was amazing too. I was invested the whole time. I read it in one sitting. The moments between Alicia and Matthew literally were heart stopping and I am still fangirling from their romance. ONE WORD literally gave me goosebumps. You'll know when you read it.

I will GLADLY devour any book that Jessica releases for the rest of my life. I have read all her published books to this point and have NEVER been disappointed.

10000000% recommend A Lady on the Chase. I received an Advanced Readers Copy and all my thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've been looking forward to Mathew's story since we first met him in Lily in Disguise. He was an excellent arrogant and brooding character that fans of Mr. Darcy will no doubt love. As for swoon level and fabulous banter, this book was amazing. The romantic tension was there and as I read, I definitely was waiting for Alicia and Mathew to accept they loved each other and seriously kiss. It ranks high on the enemies to lovers’ scale.
All that being said, I kind of struggled with Alicia through most of the book and wished that we had Mathew's POV. While the romantic tension was strong, I found a lot of the situations to be a little too over the top for the Regency era and lacking in historical accuracy. As the daughter of a Duke, I found her actions to be a bit too much out of character for someone in that position even as one more prone to causing scandal. Even the resolution with her relationship with her father and aunt at the end felt more like a 180 than a true change that occurred throughout the story. I know leniencies occur in fiction, but if I was judging solely on whether or not it was historically accurate, I would have to say no. I personally could look past that and enjoy it just for the romance (which again, the chemistry is definitely popping off the page), but feel like I can't give it a fifth star when it wasn't really true to the time period.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This got three stars from me because it was well-written and because Matthew Wycliffe, the most interesting character in the previous two Wycliffe novels, is hands-down my favorite male main character in a historical romance EVER. Which brings me to the female main character: hands-down the most unpleasant, manipulative, unrepentantly mean, and selfish woman to ever populate the pages of a novel, INCLUDING Scarlett O’Hara. A bully! A bona fide, dyed-in-the-wool bully! A user! Did I mention mean? Since the book is written in first person narrative, the only viewpoint the reader has is hers, and so we are treated to her selfishness and lack of comprehension from page 1 to page “thank goodness it’s over”…but then poor, wonderful Matthew is stuck with her until the end of time. Perhaps I should have deducted more than two stars for this affront.

And, admittedly I am a mediocre chess player, but can anyone tell me any scenario where Matthew puts this self-important shrew in check with his queen, and she blocks it with her bishop and checkmates him? Really? Wouldn’t he just take her bishop with his queen and put her back in check? Maybe her subsequent move would capture his queen and result in checkmate, but I can’t think of a single way her bishop blocks his queen and checkmates. Please, someone, enlighten me.
